FYI (DO NOT DELETE THIS INFORMATION...this can be helpful for those who are not familiar with buckyballs), CPSC Sues Maxfield & Oberton Over Hazardous Buckyballs® and Buckycube™ Desk Toys [cpsc.gov]
TL;DR:
Don't eat magnets!

why would anyone ever eats magnets still confuses me

maybe they are little kids, so just keep magnets away from magnets. Good thing little kids can't be hurt by kitchen knives.
"When two or more magnets are swallowed, they can attract to one another through the stomach and intestinal walls, resulting in serious injuries, such as holes in the stomach and intestines, intestinal blockage, blood poisoning and possibly death. Medical professionals may not diagnose the need for immediate medical intervention in such cases, resulting in worsening of the injuries."

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In an effort to prevent children from suffering further harm, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) staff filed an administrative complaint today against Maxfield & Oberton Holdings LLC, of New York, N.Y., alleging that Buckyballs and Buckycubes contain a defect in the design, packaging, warnings, and instructions, which pose a substantial risk of injury to the public. The Commission voted 3-1 to approve the filing of the complaint, which seeks, among other things, an order that the firm stops selling Buckyballs and Buckycubes, notify the public of the defect, and offer consumers a full refund.

Add shipping.

Code only works for the "Original bucky cubes". Doesnt work with any of the colored ones or the bucky balls.

Code works with multiple sets though.

You've heard about our ongoing battle with the CPSC.

we've sadly decided to stop production of Buckyballs and Buckycubes.

That's why you need to order more than one set. The shipping is $6 no matter how many sets you buy. One set for $11 sucks, but 10 sets for $66 dollars? Great deal. When they had the $5 buckyballs I bought 13 sets, cost me $70. Kept 2 for myself, sold the rest to a chump for $120. I got paid $40 to have two sets of buckyballs.

jpmxch 12-07-2012 08:27 AM

do you think these will increase in value? i'm thinking of buying some regular bucky balls too since they may be going out of business. I would think that in a few yrs the prices would increase like crazy.

However, I"m not sure they're really gonna go out of business, and if they do, I'm not sure for how long.

Knockoffs from other companies still exist I think

toolbox1 12-07-2012 09:02 AM

Since these are made in china, the quality will remain the same, but will be sold for cheaper under a "generic" brand.

IppiGeek 12-07-2012 09:09 AM

Don't get any of the colors on the cubes. They chip terribly. I had to get a set replaced. The balls are much better but the colored cubes the color peels off very badly.

peppermint 12-07-2012 09:16 AM

the first deal is dead now?

BlueBeard 12-07-2012 09:17 AM

Last time these went on sale someone here said the cubes suck. I bought some anyway, and let me tell you, they suck. You can't do anything with them.

I bought a bunch of balls too, but seeing how much I disliked the cubes I didn't open them, maybe I can unload them easier.

It's more likely that buckyballs are the knockoffs. They work, but are of poor quality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7Tka4NUmUo

Still, I have a collection of the regular balls, cubes, bars, and bigs. The cubes are some of the least versatile to play with, and it's difficult to get them to do what you want. The balls are still the most fun to play with.

slickdoll 12-07-2012 09:30 AM

Not too happy about the 5-10 day ship policy, up to 15 days, noted on the confirmation page. I figure I could have done a bit more research before purchasing, but that is a little longer than usual IMO. Plus, they like to tell you that all sales are final when using promo codes on the confirmation page as well. Just wanted to inform.

Anyone know where they ship from? I see they are based in NY. Really want these in time for Christmas for my nephews. :-/

209Mason 12-07-2012 09:32 AM

Sam Hobbs 12-07-2012 09:34 AM

At what point does the discount get applied? The banner at the top says the deal is good until 12:59 PM EST. So I clicked on the button in the banner. I immediately applied the code and it was accepted, then I changed the quantity to 1 to order one. The price showed up as the original cost but I assumed the code would change the price in the final order. It did not. I did not get a chance to approve the order as I expected; the order went through earlier than I expected. I don't know what I did wrong except be stupid. Note that I tried it again and changed the quantity first, then I applied the code. The price did not change that way either, but of course I did not proceed with that.

Update: I sent them an email and the responded immediately and canceled the order.

the current deal (for the Cubes) uses code GameOn

I'm an idiot... need to check my dates. Plus, the list doesn't specify am or pm.... I thought this sale had started last night... sorry.

In for 8 sets of cubes.

sleuthor 12-07-2012 09:44 AM

In for one. Will make a nice/cheap white elephant gift.

Nvm, it's at the top of the Shipping Info.
When you proceed to Checkout, does it still show $38.80 and only after Complete My Order will it show $29.xx?

mentosaddict 12-07-2012 09:52 AM

The website is showing that the first deal (GameOn) is good until 12:59pm Eastern time. Does that mean that the times listed on the wiki are off by an hour?

swfan 12-07-2012 09:52 AM

I can't get the code "GameOn" to work. When I get the checkout summary, it shows "promo code applied $0.00". Clearly everyone else is placing orders...I must be doing something wrong here...

No. It was 11:59pm, but they seem to have changed it to 12:59. I bet they will extend it again.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. I checked and I am trying to order the 125 ct "original". damn it, time's about to expire

Chango99 12-07-2012 09:57 AM

Ordered 10 for $65.95 to CA.

Gonna resell some, keep 2 to myself.

Use Google Checkout for $5.95 shipping for the entirety of the order. Website is pretty badly formatted.

- Entered 10 bucky cubes
- Entered GameOn promode code on the Order Summary Panel on the right and hit Apply. It should show discounted price but also shows each additional shipping & handling per order
- Go to bottom, use google check out. Don't input any information yet, hit complete my order, and go from there.

This might be a bit too late alright by now though.

You can get the knock off 216 set here for $11.25 with free shipping. Much cheaper than the $15+6.95 1pm deal.

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Fr...11883.html

I bought 4 of the 125 sets during the $5 deal. And they really are fun once you figure out triangles and polarity. They get very addicting and the problem becomes that I want to build bigger and more complex objects I found that 500pcs is not enough.

zzyzzyfryxx 12-07-2012 09:58 AM

When they initially started to get rid of them sets were 60% off/$5 each etc. Now they want full price on most. Shipping was free if you ordered 2 or more sets. Now they want $5.95 for the first set and $2.95 on each additional set. On the web site FAQ, it says the charge for each additional set is $1.95. What gives - what a ripoff

Using Google Checkout makes it only $5.95 for shipping and no add. charge.

Uhhhh no, it's not. These are way overpriced at $15 + $6 shipping for 216 balls. You would be a fool to buy them at this price and a complete idiot to buy them at $29.99.

Where are the links to products? Not in OP....

oktobermoon 12-07-2012 10:18 AM

So... it looks like the best deal is going to be:
5:00 pm - $8 for 125 Nickel Balls, code: EightBalls - $8.00 + google checkout for flat rate 5.95 shipping
if you buy 2 sets, you get 250 for $16, where you only get 216 for $15 for one of their other deals.

Agreed, this doesn't compare to the sale they had in august, $5 for the 125 sets and flat $5 shipping.. Wish I would have bought more then.

this is no deal - $6 then that doubles with the shipping charges, and that's for the smaller 125 pc set. no thanks. all the exclamation points in the world can't get me excited for this non-deal.

yeah, good luck teaching a toddler who can't speak yet that he/she shouldn't be putting shiny little spherical things in his/her mouth, especially the colored ones. toddlers/infants putting objects in their mouth isn't all about eating/being hungry, its also largely about wanting to 'learn' an object.

i can't see how the sellers of these things didn't see this issue coming up, maybe they were too greedy selling $1 of magnets for $40 to care.

Buckyballs are slightly better than generics. But Neoballs by the zen magnet company are slightly better than Buckyballs. Consistency of size matters. And unlike Bucky, they're not throwing in the towel.
http://gizmodo.com/neoballs

Use coupon code "ignition" for a 1 cent discount per sphere.

Comes out to $20.12 for 216 Nickel after shipping, and $35.24 for two sets of Nickel.

To offset the discount offered, and to maximize tax deduction.

Uhhhh yes, it is. Especially when $6 shipping is standard all the time... and the same set normally sells at 29.99... then hell yes it is STILL an amazing deal.

Some people's ignorance astounds me.

Disagree. Because $29.99 is a ridiculously STUPID price to pay for these mildly amusing desk toys. $6 is the price they should be normally. The only time I bought them was when they were on sale for $5. Even then they just sit in my cupboard at work. Ignorance is paying $30 for magnet balls.

i can't see how the sellers of these things didn't see this issue coming up, maybe they were too greedy selling $1 of magnets for $40 to care.

Children are smarter than you give them credit for if they're actually approached like they're capable of learning. My three year old niece knows not to swallow gum or toothpaste. Is she curious about the world? Sure. That doesn't mean she runs around putting things in her mouth. She is old enough to understand the dangers because we have all explained it to her.

And if we were speaking about kids even younger then there is no reason you should have tiny objects within their reach, as a parent or caregiver. But different strokes for different folks.

But if a parent chooses to be negligent then they don't have the right complain to Clorox when your child swallows the bleach you left out. And they definitely don't have the right to petition for the rest of us to be legislated by the lowest common denominator.

These things are about as fun as a prostate exam, except the greasy feeling you get with a prostate exam lasts slightly longer .

Seriously. Why is it that there are no reports of household pets eating these things? Oh right, because animals know not to eat non-foods.

Update: The CPSC contacted us saying that the CPSC is "actually suing the firm to stop sale and to issue a recall of the product." Which means, Buckyballs isn't banned quite yet. However, the CPSC is still moving forward with a lawsuit that is seeking a stop-sale of Buckyballs (its first stop-sale in 11 years).

not yet :)

I tried the 5pm and 6pm codes, put my info in and clicked "Proceed to Checkout" . Not seeing any discount applied. Any ideas?

xtrabad 12-07-2012 03:18 PM

I bought a few sets. Will donate them to local preschool for the the little ones to snack on. What can I say, I'm charitable like that, and it is the holiday season...

Bite your tongue, you anti-American. You are not responsible for ANYTHING in this country, unless you are either a small business owner and/or wealthy. Didn't you get the memo?

Oops just read the memo. I also just installed the mandatory web cams the Government is making us install in our homes so they can keep up on things. :)

imcsj 12-07-2012 03:47 PM

This price is meh... plus cubes are lame, if you are gonna get one, i highly recommend buckyballs. way more fun.

peppermint 12-07-2012 03:55 PM

So has anyone done the math which is the cheapest deal of them all? They all look like crap to me compared to the previous $5 or so deal..

mythrilgolem 12-07-2012 04:15 PM

All Sets of 125 of Balls and Cubes are $10 with the Promo Code "SuckitCPSC"

quantumcipher 12-07-2012 04:15 PM

I actually like the fact that they're rare earth (neodymium, I believe) magnets.. Don't think I'll have any problem with or desire to swallow these, and wouldn't necessarily want to buy them for a child to begin with.

Oddly tempting, in a way..

Worse deal than earlier unless it includes free shipping and even then its kind of sucky.

bellwalker 12-07-2012 04:20 PM

These are highly dangerous for adults too. Work suicide without the mess.

In for 10- great gifts for co workers :)

xtrabad 12-07-2012 04:22 PM

These guys have been trying to unload these things forever. I'll hold out until they're essentially giving them away.

wohomerhoo 12-07-2012 04:23 PM

For all those buying for Christmas, know that there shipping takes FOREVER. I think it took 3-4 weeks during the $5 fire sale.

ya, I still get a better price (than any deal) at http://neoballs.com/purchase-neoballs/ with the -2c each coupon mentioned back a few pages.

if you payed retail, this is slick. if you price compare, not so much.

phonic 12-07-2012 05:27 PM

FYI, not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, but if you pay through Google Checkout, you only get charged $5.95 for shipping, even if it's > 1 item. I ordered 4 125-count bucky ball sets (classic, gold, black and silver) for $10 each, plus $5.95 s/h, for a total of $45.95. The website said S/H would be about twice that. Seems like a payment glitch.

Blade2000 12-07-2012 05:31 PM

These have been dropping in price since they announced a few months ago they were closing down. I get a sales special email from them EVERY DAY! I bought them when they were $5 each with free shipping a few months ago. Bought 4 sets. Taht is the cheapest they have been (was a FP slickdeal). Now I get emails from them every day.

wittybecca 12-07-2012 05:40 PM

All y'all complaining about the daily emails, you do realize that there's an unsubscribe link at the bottom, right?

Yeah I don't think they care anymore. They just want to clear everything out.

lizzy210 12-08-2012 12:05 PM

Yeah, they are about to go out of business and were always jerks anyway. They care nothing now about good customer relations or bad reviews.

They were ignorant about a situation so I disputed on google checkout for a refund. No response so I got to keep the buckyballs and my money. :lmao:

Based on a suggestion from one of the other posters on this thread, I bought some Zen magnets instead. Afterwards, I saw a video that played a voicemail of the owner of Buckballs threatening to sue. I'm glad I didn't give them any money.
