Why do ants need to be shipped? Are they special ants or what? Or is it that you can't just grab the workers outside?

Had one of these as a kid and it's not nearly as cool as it looks. What's missing from the photos is that all the sand that is pulled out to form the tunnels has to go on top. So the little "farm" on the top gets sand all over it. If your kid wants an ant farm just use a mason jar. It's 100x easier to get the ants in. Just remember to wrap black construction paper around the outside of the jar b/c the ants wont want to tunnel on the edge if it's exposed to sun light.

Around here the typical ants are small.... the harvester ants they sent were much bigger & easier to watch/see.

I had to get this ant farm! I had one when I was younger and it's time to show the kids. They'll be interested to learn how the ants die off slowly one by one and the others who are alive drag them to a graveyard that they create somewhere in the kit. It's true - sad, but really interesting to watch. Hmmm, I might set up my camera kit to try my hand at some time lapse.

I don't know about these but beware. I know the lady bug farm and other animal habitats have a "free coupon" for the animals, but then they slap a shipping and handling charge when you redeem it.

ETA: Based on the reviews, it looks like the shipping charge for the ants is $10.

I just received a package of ants in the mail on Saturday for one of the gel farms. My 9 year old loves it.

Typical Amazon BS... too many people responded/bought this and now the price is $9.99. Amazon has a program that tracks their items and when one gets a lot of "hits" the price keeps getting adjusted UP. I've seen this get out of hand before where Amazon had some novelty item on sale for anything from 49 cents to $2 and people bought boat loads of them and the price winds up @ over $1000.
