Exactly. I would have thought this thread would get more love than it has, especially
with the sheer number of 5 star reviews. Hell, the lowest Amazon has ever had it for was $7.99.
Maybe you should repost yourself? After all, the price has changed. :)

MistyLyn 12-09-2012 04:17 PM

I am somewhat embarrassed to admit my blondeness -- this is obviously NOT what I thought a "stud finder" would be.

Take a magnet, see if it sticks to your wall. Piece of junk...

junoj 12-09-2012 10:16 PM

just use a strong magnet . . . . that is the best sd you can make yourself (will never break)

A magnet salvaged from a dead hard drive will accomplish the same thing. Having said that I got one of these as a gift and I like it better than a plain magnet because it does not leave any marks on the walls.

Here is a great stud finder that works on both metal and wood and it's only $3.99 shipped and no tax.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261137036...1497.l2649

As the person above said for metal studs a neodymium magnet from a hard drive or a large magnet from a dead speaker will do the same thing.

I laughed when I read this, I have been using cheap magnet for years, and yesterday I was hanging microwave and the magnet fell on the ground and broke.

This thing is amazing. Magnet is super strong to find the nails in current studs. This works better and quicker than my bulky laser stud finder. I used this to redo my baseboard and casing and it is incredible how quick and easy it is to use and find studs.

ubuntu_guru 12-10-2012 12:48 AM

I have this but sometimes I wish I had the other type (with sound and/or light) that allows you to locate edges on metal studs. I had to borrow one when I really needed to use a stud finder.

BTW, I paid $10 on Amazon, so this is a good deal if this is something you are looking for.

thisisme08 12-10-2012 06:22 AM

This thing is worth it for >$10.00, I bought one about 3 weeks ago and while its an admittingly low tech item its a nice overall package and worths better than just a bare magnet.

SlickDealio 12-10-2012 06:33 AM

Rabb02 12-10-2012 06:34 AM

Is it dead? It keeps auto deleting from the cart

jimmyjames76 12-10-2012 06:36 AM

These things are fantastic. This magnet is WAY stronger than your standard magnet, and it doesn't leave marks on your wall. The built in level is a nice feature too. Definitely worth having one of these around the house.

Pantalaimon 12-10-2012 06:38 AM

wizardofwoz01 12-10-2012 06:54 AM

In 4 1... Slightly too late though, just mounted a LCD TV using a laser stud finder and went to HomeDepot to pick one of these up just to double check the laser one (I hate putting holes in my walls) but they didn't have any... $7 for peace of mind is well worth it

HA! It definitely doesn't work for the kind of stud you are thinking. I know because I have this stud finder and I am still looking for a stud!

However, I do like this as a wall stud finder. Yes, you can just get some strong magnets and stick them on the wall. And that is what I was doing until I got this. I have 2 of the electronic, fancy, name brand, supposed-to-be-good stud finders. Neither one has ever been very consistent IMO. This magnetic one doesn't lie (unless you have some other metal in your walls).

So, it is very basic, but I grab it first every time I am hanging stuff on the walls.

Alright you cheap @#*%'s ! Crap on this for $1.79 ! (unavailable for shipping)

Probably cheaper than rare earth magnets!

Evan55 12-10-2012 07:17 AM

best studfinder ever.

i have one of those fancy milwaukee stud finders with the LCD screen and this magnet is much more reliable

ShiosX 12-10-2012 07:24 AM

best little stud finder i bought when it ws at $9.50. took me a while to get use to it but once i found the nail, it stuck to it! helped me for setting up my surround sound system with ease =]

Captainpsp 12-10-2012 07:45 AM

I am pretty handy around the house. This is prob the best stud finder I have ever used. YES it is just a strong magnet, but still pin points the studs very well... unlike the digital ones that miss 2/3 times.

it did on my walls but that was because we still have the flat piss-coat from the builder in most of our rooms.

InfamousDX 12-10-2012 07:47 AM

Have this. Love it. So so much better than digital ones.

Keyser_Soze_09 12-10-2012 07:52 AM

This thing kicks major ass, I haven't used my Zircon $40 unit in years. As long as it's wood studs, this is more accurate, faster, and fits in your pocket

nzyme36 12-10-2012 08:03 AM

This is an excellent stud finder. Someone said it doesn't work on newer homes, my place was built in 2007. Someone also said it doesnt work on plastered walls - works fine on mine.

I can't recommend this for construction purposes, but it definitely works for residential applications (hanging guitars, pictures, leveling frames, etc)

Its a great price and I love how it doesnt require batteries. I do recommend it.

mutha_scratcha 12-10-2012 08:15 AM

stack off meritline magnets and a piece of string was all I needed

I have that one. Crap. Complete crap, especially on non smooth surfaces. The Hanson one is really nice.

Southengineer 12-10-2012 08:30 AM

I got one of these last year, the magnet is fantastic and it is VERY strong. It does a great job.

niao 12-10-2012 08:33 AM

I've this one. Not sure if others would work better, but while using this to wire my projector and speaker wires, I was concerned about missing any fireblocks that weren't nailed down. Luckily I didn't encounter any. I kind of regretted this because I will likely buy another electronic one that doesn't depend on the nails and if that works well, I'll likely stop using the magnetic one. Went to Lowe's last weekend, saw one that works amazing in finding the edge precisely (at least on their "demo" wall), but it was $40.

slide12345678 12-10-2012 08:44 AM

Second that, on both counts. We painted the dining room before Thanksgiving and were putting new/differently placed pictures up afterward. Even those cheapies scratch the wall if you rub them up against it, and the magnets are unbelievably weak. This thing is heavy and sturdy, but clings to the wall without leaving a mark. And since you are usually looking for a stud to hang something on a wall, the level is quite handy. I got his at Sears a month ago for free (SYWR) but traveled miles to order and pick it up because it was cheaper at 10 than any place around and it had the best reviews on Amazon. If you have a few reward bucks that are about to expire, grab it and toss it into the gift drawer. Bet you anything you will end up using it long before you can gift it.

Uhh no, the TWO magnets in this are neodymium magnets and are MUCH stronger than the typical kind you might have laying around your house. This thing will even lock on to small finishing nails. I challenge you to do that with a regular magnet.

Syrinx2112 12-10-2012 09:18 AM

Also, to anyone buying these as stocking stuffers be careful as the magnets on these things would probably destroy magnetic strips on gift cards etc.

samdrake 12-10-2012 09:49 AM

A magnet works, but not as well as a studfinder. I'd rather know I'm hitting a stud than see my drywall ripped under weight.

The magnet isn't attracted to hollow drywall... if it finds a screw/nail there is most likely stud underneath. And if someone can't tell they are hitting a stud while screwing in a TV mount etc then they should probably hire someone or get a more handy family member to do it for them.

Yes, it has worked well for me. I hung two huge flat screens with this thing. Never a doubt where the studs were. Well, I was actually wondering where the "human studs" were cuz I am a female and hung those televisions by myself. Try being on a ladder and balancing a TV on your head with one hand and trying to tighten things with the other. It was no easy task!!

For the one I hung before I got this stud finder I used about 8 neodymiun magnets and had a line of them going down the wall so I could see exactly where the stud ran. It worked so well that when I saw this, I wanted it. Like I said before, it is basic with no bells and whistles. But for my needs, it serves its purpose well! :)

Or the metal plates in your head :D

tooslow 12-10-2012 12:59 PM

I have NOT read all the way through this thread.
I just wanted to note that I've used magnetic stud finders in the past.
I've ALSO used an ultrasonic (?) one that read wall density. I bought one at the local hardware store and it was not more than this price.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
I'll ne'er go back to magnetic. The new ones show you EXACTLY where both edges of the stud are;
a great feature for getting a lag bolt dead center to hold up a seventy-five pound television and articulated arm.
That is all.

wojtek9321 12-10-2012 01:26 PM

This is hands down the best stud finder ever! I use it all the time... also good to magnetize the tips of screwdrivers lol

They have some sort of time frame they are supposed to get your order out to you or they give you a $5.00 "gift paper" (not a gift CARD, but not really a coupon cuz it is for $5.00 of in store items. I think they call it a customer care coupon).

Anyway, the last few times I have gone, they can't seem to locate my order. So once they gave me 4 of those $5.00 customer care coupons, and another time they gave me 2. Gonna go to Sears tomorrow to see if I can knock out a Christmas gift or two for my dad. $30.00 for sitting there waiting for my order... I'll take it!

I will say my Sears is awful as far as the people that work in the actual store, BUT the guy that runs the pick-up department is by far one of the best guys I have ever come across as far as customer service goes. He goes above and beyond, he is friendly, he helps any way he can, and he even opens and closes my car door for me. May seem like a small thing, but when is the last time you ever came across an employee that did that for you? He is the sole reason I bother going to Sears. If I couldn't shop online and pick up there, then they would not see a dime from me. Hate to say it but Sears has definitely gone downhill over the years. But I do still like the Craftsmen tools.

As I digress....

DavNeil 12-11-2012 06:51 AM

I have all sorts of nice ones but never success and I planning on installing some cabinets, not sure how will it go. I read long back that this is good and it is comparable to a simple magnet and most of them just have a magnet in them. I used my huge waster sub-woofer to do the same but it will make streaks on the wall and this one doesn't.

mehmehmeh 12-11-2012 07:20 AM
