TheDudeMan 12-14-2012 10:39 PM

Awesome just got one! Almost bought one for my girlfriend's Christmas present for 268 today glad I waited.

VVoltz 12-14-2012 10:40 PM

Cheaper than the Adorama deal, damn it, I jumped the gun too soon.

rebelx 12-14-2012 10:41 PM

For what it's worth, your purchase is from PayPal, which means for those AMEX cardholders that intend on doubling their warranty, it won't happen.

SB1 12-14-2012 10:41 PM

so I have a Nexus 7 and a Samsung 7.7 sitting here in front of me and I think they are both a pain in the ass to use. I keep going back to my iOS devices. Let the flaming begin :D

You're setting yourself up for failure with that one, lol. :shake:

I agree iOS tablets are a better web browsing experience, ecosystem yaddy yadda. But this is hell of a deal for $217. This is also cheaper then a 32GB iPod touch.

If you're on the fence I'd just grab it.

Return policy:

"Return Policy
You may return merchandise purchased from Beachcamera for a refund or a replacement, provided that the procedures and requirements referred to in our return policy are followed. All product returns require a return authorization number (RA). A RA number must be issued within 45 calendar days after the date of purchase; it will be valid for 14 calendar days after it is issued."

45 days is extremely generous and a good amount of time to try it out.

I already have a 32GB from adorama with the case. still find it annoying to use although less so than the samsung 7.7 I just got.

kyrax1213 12-14-2012 10:50 PM

does anyone buy the 2yr warranty?

mrmartin86 12-14-2012 10:52 PM

Damn! Jumped on the Adorama deal earlier. After the Discover 5% CB and mr rebates 3% CB, it works out to be about the same. HOWEVER this deal gives you ebay bucks AND mr rebates 1% for all ebay purchases IS BACK, so don't forget to get your $2.17!

SB1 12-14-2012 10:53 PM

I am really trying to give Android a chance but it really is a pain to use. I bought a bunch of apps on a nexus 7 a couple of days ago from amazon and I cant get them to load on my new samsung without paying again. I'm signed into the same gmail account. I dunno....

I would wait for one of the 35 percent off coupon codes for square trade warranties, an extra year might be worth $14, it would be for me.

I have six android tablets in the family and 3 android phones.... I have never had a single issue with purchased apps having to be repurchased on another device. I could see them not showing up because of different devices (the Play store filters apps compatible with your device).... But I have never had a issue with having to repurchase apps.

He is wrong, you can have multiple devices. I currently have 3 devices all with amazon installs from the same account. Just make sure to go to "My Apps" and you should find them in there.

Great deal, but I can't bite just yet.

I have the OG Motorola Xoom with stock JB on it and I can't see upgrading. Sure it doesnt play HD videos, but idk... I want a Tegra 3 tablet to replace it, but I'm not sure if 7" is too small. Maybe 9" is the perfect fit between a 4.5" phone and a 13.3" ultrabook

This is the WIFI only version $250 retail.. so you're only saving about $33. If it was closer to $60-$80 off, then I would think that would be hot/slick.

Right, $250 retail and then shipping (if online) and tax just about everywhere.

For example, from the Play Store, that'd be $30+ on top of the $250.

Definitely slick here.

mdapperc 12-14-2012 11:13 PM

I wouldn't judge Android based on Amazon's ecosphere. I personally hate that layout. My advice to you would be to stick to the Play Store for all your apps if you can. It is easier to navigate and usually gets updated before Amazon's store.

The only thing I use the Amazon store for really is the free-app-a-day.

I currently have the Galaxy Tab 2, running on a CyanogenMod 10.1 build (just about stock Android 4.2.1) and I bought the Nexus 7 earlier today. Here is why:

1) The quad core processor really is much better. You won't notice a super lot in everyday usage however, I cannot play some 1080p animes I have on the Tab 2, it just can't render them. The Nexus 7 can.

2) The screen is better. Not only is it covered with Corning Glass (instead of the plastic used on the Tab 2 which smudges super easy with finger oil) the screen is better quality, I believe with it being laminated to the screen, thus not being sunk-down in the device. The picture is better and the resolution is higher (1280x800 vs. 1024x600). Even though that doesn't seem like much of a difference, you get more screen real estate, and on a 7" tablet, every bit helps.

3) Standard micro USB vs. proprietary Samsung 30-pin connecter. No brainer here.

4) Better front facing camera (1.3MP vs. 0.3MP)

5) NFC.

6) Stock Android out of the box, Google backed, and there is a good amount of accessories and support for it.

Here is what the Tab 2 has going for it:

1) 3MP Camera on the back. HOWEVER, it is fixed focus and is honestly horrible and so I never use it. This is a wash for me.

2) Micro SD card slot.

The micro-sd card slot was what held me back for so long, as I like to have lots of physical storage (8GB onboard + 32GB card in my Tab 2). However, realizing that I never really use more than 32GB, once that version of the Nexus 7 came out (8 and 16 were just too small for me), I reconsidered and waiting for a good deal.

Hope this helps you guys!

eman40 12-14-2012 11:25 PM

Thanks, op! i managed to make this work a few days back, had the 15% off coupon in my account about to expire and just picked up the Nexus 7 for $184.44!

You need to go to the Amazon app store app, press the menu button and one of the menu options should be "My Apps". Click on that and there you will find your apps ready to be downloaded.

You can have them on as many devices as you have your amazon app store app loaded on and signed into your amazon account. I've got mine on 5 different devices and yet to have an issue.

This was very helpful, thank you. Rep given!

I have one, and its great! Rooted it and then used stickmount to mount a flashdrive/usb OTG and now I can play mkv on the flashdrive or copy it over.

Its pretty sweet, since flash drive are so cheap, or you can plug in a ext hdd. :)

Isn't it awkward to have to connect a hard drive to the tablet? How do you move the thing around?

the OP from my linked thread found the 15% off for new customers by going to eBay mobile site. I tried the same through my gf's iPhone 5 (it didn't show up on my iPhone) and it worked. So i just signed up for a new account, received the coupon immediately and left it there until today.

It was very hit or miss as the coupon banner wasn't showing up for many of the people who tried going on the eBay mobile site. It seems to be dead, though.

lol. I bought a second one to really give the nexus line a shot. I'll take one to work and leave one at home. I'll master these tablets yet! :D

However, realizing that I never really use more than 32GB, once that version of the Nexus 7 came out (8 and 16 were just too small for me), I reconsidered and waiting for a good deal.

megamawax 12-14-2012 11:54 PM

I suppose if I had known that this deal was coming, I wouldn't have gotten the Adorama deal that came with a case and screen protector for $239 as I could have used the price difference between that deal and this one for a better case, but it's hard to really kick myself considering that was probably the best deal around until this one. Plus, I was able to get Squaretrade to sell me a 3 year warranty, on which I used a 40% off coupon.

While I haven't owned any Apple products to compare it to, I am quite happy with the Nexus 7. An HDMI port would have been nice, and an SD card slot would have been a useful luxury, but 32GB is really plenty for me. Mostly, I will be using this at home, and I can stream all of my content from my PC, so I don't need to store a lot of music and videos on the device itself, and I have an old Pandigital Novel which works really well as a dedicated eReader (with some extra Android functionality when needed), so I really only need to store apps and some content for my son when we go on a trip someplace. My only real complaint would be the onboard speaker, which kind of sucks. Also, I was concerned that watching video on such a small screen would have been awful, but it's really not that bad. Considering that I'm sharing this tablet with my 5 year old, I was reluctant to get a larger tablet, and now that I have this in my hands, I am really glad that I went with the Nexus 7.

JeremiahD 12-14-2012 11:55 PM

I also have the Note 2 (ironically enough). I f**king love that phone. Do I need the 7" tablet with it? Eh. Not really. Resolution is nice and screen is huge for a phone. Would I want to do a lot of the video watching on it as I do on the tablet? Probably not.

Is it still nice and convenient to have the tablet? Yes. Yes it is.

we shouldn't take ebay bucks into consideration. it's an illusion.

next time you buy something with $4.34 ebay bucks so you get that for free, it not that you paid $4.32 less for your nexus 7.

Exactly why you go back to iOS. Exactly why you find it such a "pain" to use the android devices. You fit the Apple mold - either too dumb or too unwilling to figure basic stuff out (or even do some basic reading). You need the homogeneous ecosystem that apple provides because that's the only way you're going to continue to get spoon-fed. Do NOT feel bad - at least 75% of Apple users are in the same boat. My advice, stick with Apple, it'll be the only thing that's ever easy enough for you.

I really don't see the point of having to think of it that way if you know you're going to spend them. You certainly can, if that helps you.

When I'm considering an item with a mail-in rebate, I make the value proposition there, on the spot. After rebate I will have spent x dollars. I don't have to think of the thing I bought with the x dollars as free.

I was on the same boat, waited until 1000 for it to sell out. It didn't, waited until 1500 it didnt sell out.

However, with the return policies... I was like why the hell not :)

All product returns require a return authorization number (RA). A RA number must be issued within 45 calendar days after the date of purchase; it will be valid for 14 calendar days after it is issued.

Then PayPal will refund the return shipping, and it has no re-stocking fee. For anyone that can wait, and don't need a tablet right now. I would wait. I think this deal is for people who needs it for Xmas or need upgrade.

Can you please explain this to me? This is the kind of spoiling, catering, cossetting, pampering behavior that kids grow up with and all the subsequent behavioral issues that follow.

Keep the damn expensive item for yourself and give your child something they can break. Really? Your 3 year old has already learned how to control you? Is he close friends with the E-trade baby?

I was going to write something similar ... well maybe not so harsh but yeah - I think you nailed it.

Android isn't for everyone. In fact, I'm surprised that it's as popular as it is (chalk that mainly up to cost relative to Apple). It's not difficult to understand or use but there is definitely a learning curve. Several of my friends/co-workers tried to make the leap from Apple to Android only to be miserable. They need that hand holding and polish that comes with iOS.

Personally, I prefer WP for a phone, Android for a tablet, and iOS is a solid all-around choice for those that don't want to tinker around with stuff.

This deal does make me sad. My 8GB N7 for $200 was such a good deal ... until about a month ago. Really bummed that I don't have some additional storage space. After taxes my 8GB cost about the same as this.

I was more referring to the 7" size for movies and surfing.. seems a bit small. Also according to reports the color is off.

There is always something on the horizon that will be better. Buy what you need when you need it at the best price you can find it.

AMEX rep said that as long as the amount for the item was paid in full with your card even through paypal, all of the same benefits apply (ie. 90-day accidental breakage, theft and the warranty extension)

We have a gold business card through them and they've confirmed that while they'll only deny a claim on a typical card if it meets their criteria (accidental damage, etc), on an intermediary purchase, they can deny it outright, should they choose to.

I am also tempted to buy, but am concerned that it might be a little small. Really want a jellybean tablet though and this price is great.

No, definitely not. This one can only do playing games and watching movies. It's too small and not waterproof for you to surf with this device. If I recall correctly, the Surface can also be used as a skateboard, and the iPad 2 can be used as a surfboard. The newer models unfortunately are no longer surfable.

Coming from someone with the user name 'AGGRAVATED', I'd say you're the one who is mad, bro.

And I do not have any children. I actually don't think you're that wrong in what you said. But to sit there and chastise someone you've never even met for what.....? Giving their kid an Ipad? Just one person to another: You really come out looking like a d-bag. Which I'm sure isn't a new thing for you. That's all I'm saying.... Bro.

What makes these Nexus tablets so good? Just curious....seems like a lot of people in the slickdeals community are flocking to them, even at full price, or even with just a slight percentage off. Just want to know what makes these so damn attractive to the community here. Thanks in advance.

ewin8 12-15-2012 01:12 AM

These must not be selling well since they go on sale so often.

Quality for the price... value. No wonder Apple's stock is headed back to $400. This Nexus 7 is about half the price of the 32GB iPad Mini but has a better display and aspect ratio, a GPS chip, and other advantages. I already have one but am in for another as a gift at this price.

Played with a Mini and a Nexus 7 side by side and resolution is not the only consideration for a screen. the Mini's screen is nicer than the Nexus', and the extra width in portrait is also much better for reading. But the price between the two is hard to ignore.

Class-leading(at time of release) hardware or close to it at a great price, excellent pure Android OS, and the fastest software updates would probably be the three best reasons to get any Nexus device. Nexus devices are also usually very competitively priced for what you're getting.

rampartmovie 12-15-2012 01:21 AM

How would this compare to a rooted Nook Tablet 16GB with a 7in. screen...Is this worth the $120 price difference?

Wrong assumption.

fukdatsonn 12-15-2012 01:22 AM

In for one. I already bought one from a local store that's 16GB a couple of weeks ago so I'm returning it (usually 14 days return policy but it's extended because of the holiday season). Same price for twice the size. Also this is the best Android tablet that's currently out there IMO.

thund3rcat 12-15-2012 01:23 AM

Wish they had hdmi. What is the setup on android devices to transfer a wireless video signal?

I'm sure there's more, but here are a couple stand out reasons for me...

-Yes it's made by Asus, but it's "Google's" tablet... part of their "flagship" line. So with the hundreds of android devices out there, you would think you'd get the best experience on Google's Nexus tablet. I'd guess Google would take the time to make sure everything works great on these tablets, then worry about the others. Take the Toshiba Thrive for example. It came with Honeycomb 3.2 and took forever to get the Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 update (more of a Toshiba problem though). Again, I'm guessing that the Nexus tablets will get all the new updates first and be the most supported by Google in general.

-The resolution of the screen is great at 1280 x 800. Compare this to the popular Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7.0 that has a 1024 x 600 resolution.
