an entitled dumb comment was removed from here.

How do you change the setting for what exactly is enabled for notifications? (i.e. frontpage deals, deal alerts, etc.) I only want to be notified for deal alerts, not frontpage deals.
Out on Version 1.1! Thanks slickdeals!

Now that the notification can be deal alerts alone, how can we make this be the only method of notification in our account? Right now, the options for deal alerts are email/private message/both. A third option needs to be added for app notification only.

ETA ON:
1. Android version? Now Available on Google Play. [google.com]
2. iOS update regarding push notifications? Version 1.1 is out and has this. Thanks.
3. iOS update regarding pre-iOS 6 (if ever)?
4. Windows Phone 8?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the official version?
Yes, this is the only official Slickdeals iPhone App.

Where is the Android version?
In development. There is 2x more traffic coming from iPhone vs Android, which is why we priortize iPhone app over Android.

Why iOS 6 only?
There are some iOS 6 specific things we needed to make the app work the way it does. 90% of iPhone users on our site is on iOS 6.

Why can't I do X?
This is the first version of the app. We felt that this covered majority of the functionality for most people. We rather release the app sooner so everyone can use it, instead of waiting a couple of more months to add some smaller features. This isn't the final version, we're constantly going to be making improvements and adding new features.

Updated clarification on Android 2x figure

As for the claim about iOS having 2x more traffic than Android remember to distinguish the difference between web usage and sold. We look at actual web usage, not devices sales. We're fully aware of the # of Android vs iOS devices sales. Everything from our own Google Analytics to mobile ad networks [chitika.com] (you can sum up Apple vs all other manufactures to get a 2x difference) to asking users which mobile app they want points back up the 2x figure and why we prioritize iOS over Android. However, we do acknowledge that Android has marketshare and is growing and we're paying close attention to this, which is why we have Android app in development.

Don't take it personally, we're a small team of developers with a limited amount of developing resource to go around and always looking to hire more people.

So if I click a slickdeals link in an email on my iphone; say a thread alert, will it launch the SD app for me or is there an open in slickdeals option?

dapperdanguy 12-15-2012 01:14 PM

When do we get an app for Android? I'd say the majority of slickdealers are on Android.

yeah that's what i'm using right now but the watch feature is meh on it. also surfing hot deals doesn't bring up all the deals in a day, and it sorts it by when it was first posted. a native sd app that could be linked to my account would be great.

You are using iSlick not this brand new official app. iSlick is an alright app but I use the official Slick Deals app on my iPad and the experience is much better than iSlick.

+1; i really don't care about an app but i don't like the mentality companies use that an apple app must be the focus

beyond that I don't understand all the apps anyway... for me its quicker and more convenient to use bookmarks for the mobile websites than have an app for the twenty web sites I go to. what am i missing?

It is much more cost effective at this time to make an iOS app than n Android. Many reasons.

krazyshopper 12-15-2012 01:57 PM

I thought this has been free for a while? I love the app. I check it several times a day. They've done a lot of fixes to the app to make it better to.

But they really have done an awesome job with the mobile website. m.slickdeals.com. I actually like using the mobile website more than the app because it allows you to check the popular deals. The iOS and android apps don't allow for that. Only frontpage dealsd, top favorites and top rated. I wish they would update them to allow you to browse popular deals (and trending deals too)

this app shiits all over viewing the site in Safari...NO CONTEST

wahhh you cant filter wahhh...im sure there are some good deals on some diapers for some of you

at least the site doesnt lag and freeze everytime you click a frontpage link

this app provides an efficient and easy way to view the forums without having to constantly pinch to zoom if you visit the site on your iPhone at all you would be stupid not to grab this app

iPhone traffic is 2x more than Android traffic. We're aware that there are more Android devices, but there is just less traffic to our site (and many other site). Based on this information, it only made sense to prioritize iPhone first. However, Android is currently in development.

zeeshansyed 12-15-2012 02:13 PM

I have been thinking about making an Android SD app with some kick ass features. Two problems that I have had are:

1) Not sure about the number people who'd use that
2) Not much time.

Apparently SD got an official app coming but I'd still take a crack at it if enough people are interested.

Wow this is so much better than the unofficial sd app I've been using.my favorite part is how all the links open within the app itself and don't go into a separate browser. Also this Is way more comprehensive than the unofficial ones.

A few suggestions. Can u add an easy way to check trending deals? Also top rated and top favorites?

Also can you make it easier to rep people and thumbs up posts?

Also do u have any idea when the iPad and android apps are going to be released?

islick is the unofficial app which still works good but this deal is referring to the official app. So make sure you click on the link in the op post.

So far I am loving it. I will spend a great deal of time on it. I can already tell.

dang it, missed this thread...

The UI is great. My biggest issue (and the reason why I won't use this app) is the content view.

It's similar to the i.slickdeals.net, which I couldn't use, so I went back to m.slickdeals.net.

Here's the biggest thing: so much wasted space!!!

I hope these pictures convey what I'm talking about.
With the app (and i.slickdeals.net), there is so much more unnecessary scrolling.
1st pic is Forum View, the list of topics. See how many topics you can see w/ app vs mobile.
2nd pic is Thread View, the list of comments. See how many comments you can see w/ app vs mobile.

A few suggestions. Can u add an easy way to check trending deals?

You must be using the old mobile site for the comparison. One of the reason why we updated the mobile site was to make it more touch friendly. We'll take a look at ways to optimize the UI accordingly.

I agree. I have a Apple iPod Touch 3.0 & Apple WILL NOT upgrade it to OS6 so I am stuck with 5.1.1

This app needs to be backwardly compatible. I give it a thumbs down. FAIL.

I feel like I'm going to be using the old http://m.slickdeals.net for a long time (not the new m.slickdeals.net).
I'd rather have more screen real estate for reading data, at the sacrifice of touch friendliness.
How many times do you have to "thumb to scroll" before you reach the end of a page?

Using this thread as an example, I "read" all the way down from post #1 to #40 (40 posts per page).
Took me about 9 thumb scrolls vs 20 scrolls w/ the mobile app.

The only thing I can't do on http://m.slickdeals.net is check my profile page (to see last posts, etc...) - I have to use the full HTML version for that.

Doesn't shock me that Android gets shown the backseat again. I mean there are special links that are iPhone (http://slickdeals.net/mobile/) and iPad (http://slickdeals.net/mobile/ipad.php) friendly. Don't see a link at the top for Android! Step it up @SlickdealsCEO

jailbroken on 5.1.1. bought it months ago when it was on ios5. great app! However, it does not push notifications even when setup to do.everything else works. all apps should be compatible with 5.1.1.no excuses. will never downgrade to ios6..ever..unless JB.

What Android phone did you use? Android was really rough a few years ago, and I would say after ICS, it has become very refined and elegant. The GS3 is an extremely good phone. With a lot of apps open, any phone will slow down. This applies to iOS and Android. And what errors are you referring to? Not trolling, but genuinely curious.

That comparison is really off. Yes, the majority of the world speaks Chinese, but this is an English website, that has users on iOS and Android. And what does it matter if iOS users spend more? The app is free.

That being said, I can't wait for the Android version.

One of my favorite features on the unofficial islick app is the ability to check top favorites and top rated. Top favorites are the deals that are currently the most thumbed up. Top rated are the deals that have the most stars.

Usually top rated and top favorited filter out some incredible deals that may not have made it to front page. Or some of them have made it to front page. Anyway, those are two great ways to sort the deals. if you look at islick, youll see what i mean.

uhJenny 12-15-2012 03:08 PM

Is this a function of so many unofficial slickdeals apps on the playstore which is depressing site traffic numbers? I don't doubt the accuracy of 2x number, but that number may not give the complete story about how users interact with slickdeals especially when you consider that android now has a bigger market share (or at least last I checked).

Since it's only for the latest version of the OS, I wonder how everyone would feel if it was for the latest version of Android. Would that make everyone feel better?

I'd bet there's a much higher percentage of "i" devices that are easily upgradeable to the latest OS version (iOS 6) than there are Android devices that are easily upgradeable to the latest OS version (4.2).

No iOS 5 support is a mistake. It is just bad business. Slickdeals is in essence eliminating a huge number of people from using their app. Iphone 3gs runs like crap with iOS 6 and in fact the iPhone 4 is not far off. When you take into account the amount of Jailbroken devices that the new app will not support and the amount of traffic SD will be losing in the long run, it seems failrly cut and dry. IMO

Who exactly was the person that decided 90% of the SD target iPhone users are using iOS 6? I would like to see this study because it is undoubtedly nonsense.

Although iSlick will get many a DL from those finding no support for the SD app, they must be happy.

I'm going to call BS on the 2X iphone statement. I'm in the tech industry and study this and the treands of mobile devices. You either have some bogus monthly data or your taking the hype around the internet. Maybe your comparing one specific version of android?

I'm going to call BS on the 2X iphone statement. I'm in the tech industry and study this and the treands of mobile devices. You either have some bogus monthly data or your taking the hype around the internet. Maybe your comparing one specific version of android?

If you are taking ALL android phones vs ALL iphone traffic, I honestly don't see how you can get those numbers.

What reason would they have to release the iphone version first unless it was that they get more traffic through it?

No Android? Not good for me....
