Performance Interface: USB 3.0
Capacity: 1TB

Physical Spec
Form Factor: 2.5"

USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 compatibility.

Those of you that like to gut these external cases for their contents may have issues with this model.

fcmem 12-16-2012 12:59 AM

damn it I could have used this a few hours ago, bought the same drive from TD for the same price but AFTER 30 rebate :(

wonder If I can cancel

I seriously doubt it will last long enough to get to FP.
it says limited quantity and they've already sold over 100 in the middle of the night.

how many could they have?
on the other hand they set the limit to 5 per customer so.. maybe they got a whole semi trailer full of them or something.

Either way I feel really sour having gotten in on the TD deal just hours ago.
same price in the end but I gotta deal with the rebate :(

no way to cancel until 8am est, i'll either be asleep, they'll have shipped (or said they shipped) or newegg will be sold out by then.

Ananke 12-16-2012 02:12 AM

Nice found. Have 3 Seagates from Target already though...

agt_dale_cooper 12-16-2012 02:18 AM

NICE.
Was just eyeballing a $79.99 Toshiba in Radio Shack's ad this (well, yesterday, I guess..just got home...) morning.
JTAG 360 + TB = Bliss (upgrading from 500GB at $59.99? PRICELESS!)
Rogero 4.3X + TB = Bliss (upgrading from 250GB at $59.99? PRICELESS!)
In for 2, +1 given.

And they ignored the other deal that's been going on for two days and Frontpaged this one as predicted.

Sorry you got caught in between the two, but it is Sunday, so hopefully you can reverse that one if you call early on. Good luck!

jaydubya 12-16-2012 03:37 AM

The good: $59.99, pretty good reviews online.

The "eh. . .": 1 yr warranty, Micro-USB connector soldered onto board inside the drive (i.e., not native SATA connector inside).

In all fairness I personally think that the lack of a rebate does make this a much slicker deal than the $60 Tiger Direct deals that have been floating around here for the last week or so.

Rebates suck, especially rebates that equate to half of the products price (post rebate). I've personally had really good luck with rebates, but it generally takes me about half an hour of my time to process and log my rebates......it's just a huge pain in the ass. For the record, I'm currently waiting on two separate $30 rebates from Tiger on these drives, fortunately I lucked out and got mine for $50 each (after rebate).

Toshiba makes the best externals in my experience. I paid $65 after tax for one about 1 month ago for one from Wal-mart. Couldn't be happier. In fact, almost all portable externals I have kept for myself in the last 2 or 3 years have been Toshiba. Still, I am so freaking tempted by this deal. I always am by HD and SSD deals even though I have plenty on hand for customer builds already and have 18 in use in my computers.

Exactly. That's my biggest concern with these drives, it'll really make it hard to recover your data when the usb adapter fails.

I completely agree that the lack of a rebate makes this slicker. But I still think the pre-existing deal was slick too. And both of the previous Frontpage deals had a rebate. So now that this deal is here, yeah, it's slicker. But that doesn't really explain why the other one was ignored for two days. That's all. ;)

goboilers 12-16-2012 04:15 AM

why ebay?

Can anyone explain the business theory behind companies, such as, in this case, Newegg, using Ebay to sell stuff?

In situations where there's no hiding who the real seller is, why aren't they just selling via their regular website? Logically (to me, at least), they wouldn't do this unless there was a good reason. I only wonder if the reason isn't to hide something. Is this secretly a refurb? Or is this a "special" model that's inferior somehow?

Long story short, what's the deal?

suniljm 12-16-2012 04:19 AM

More people shop at eBay than Newegg. It's all about market penetration.

It's a promotion by eBay. Basically eBay pays Newegg to sell through eBay. Newegg also in theory gets new customers.

:D Things do have a strange way of working around here sometimes. I have to admit I have seen a couple weak front pagers Op'd by Mods in the past couple of weeks, but hey none of us are perfect, right?

They have a Micro-USB connection soldered onto them, instead of a SATA, so you won't be able to remove the drives and connect them to your PC's SATA Ports...not easily anyway.

I'm assuming that's what you are wanting to do.

Alas - your reply prompted me to do a quick search. But still good for a Time Machine backup.

trife.from.nt 12-16-2012 07:01 AM

Had to buy at least 1 of these. Can't resist a great deal.

My wife will be pleased with another non-Christmas related purchase so close to Christmas. SMH.

billbillw 12-16-2012 07:06 AM

Good deal.
EDIT: I see it has already been mentioned this drive is USB native, no SATA.

Also wanted to point out, Crystaldisk bench has this drive doing a sustained 85MB/s write and read. That is pretty good for external. I bought one and I'll start using it for my backups.

Physically, the connector is a non-proprietary combo usb 3.0 power/micro-usb. I have 2 WD drives with physically non-proprietary connectors, one just like this one and one mini usb 2.0. With both of them, when I try a generic cable it doesn't work reliably. Flaky connection at best. Now I stay away from all these and will only buy externals which are SATA drives removable from enclosures. Or I just use internal drives in purchased enclosures.

How does elements compare to passport? It looks like passport is more expensive for the same disk space.

Passport are smaller which is why they cost more. My friend has had 2 passport fail on him while my old elements USB 2.0 still runs strong. For this reason, I am buying this here deal. Oh, also, passport come with some software included in a partition, elements doesn't so I much prefer elements even though it's huge size.

tommyg562000 12-16-2012 10:03 AM

Thanks, I bought 1. Really good deal, and i didn't have to deal with rebates!

Got the 3TB during FB for 100, but the portability of this 1tb will find its way to my heart.

You said you prefer Passport?

Also, anyone know if buying from eBay will accept warranty approval?

Woops nice catch. Meant I prefer elements as mine hasn't ever failed. Edited post.

Anyone know if this 3.0 USB will work on USB 2.0? The reason I ask is because I have the 2.0 version and it comes with a power supply so I don't know if 2.0 is enough to power this new 3.0 device.

EDIT it seems that it is compatible with USB 2.0 from what I've been reading at Amazon.com

Sorry you got caught in between the two, but it is Sunday, so hopefully you can reverse that one if you call early on. Good luck!

Ya I was tired and went to bed, might have been able to cancel if I stayed up or got up early (it was like 4am when I found the deal so fat chance of getting back up at 8)
I figured NE would run out of drives by then so I went to sleep.
I just checked my order it's already shipped, NE still has drives after 3k sold so I guess I was wrong, It's not the end of the world, It's still a good deal but I would have liked not to deal with the rebate.

I got a 750GB Toshiba Canvio from Walmart for $52.xx (including tax) on BF. Since I haven't opened it yet, considering BOTH price and quality, would it be advisable to return that and get this one instead?

djudd 12-16-2012 11:11 AM

Does anyone know if this is a 5400 or 7200 rpm (or another number) drive? The best I could do was find this sheet [wdc.com], but the format of the code number on this particular drive doesn't quite match up. My best guess is 5400 from the 'BPCK'.

Indio22 12-16-2012 11:46 AM

Thanks. I've been making due with a 250gb version of this drive for a couple years. It has worked well, but capacity has sometimes been an issue. So decided to jump on this 1tb drive for the added capacity and USB 3.0.

LoveGoodDeals731 12-16-2012 12:14 PM

can this be used w a macbook air?

agt_dale_cooper 12-16-2012 12:20 PM

Hmmm.....didn't see the soldered-on USB bit in any commentary about this drive until this thread.
This obviously SUCKS for migrating to a PC/Xbox 360/PS3 environment.
Anybody done a teardown on this / replacement of said board?
[Really explains why these were so cheap, I guess....I don't even have USB 3, never bothered with it. Just extract drive from case, toss case...]
I'll look around for some extraction/replacement intel...

Hmmm....seems to work for Wii, but may not be the "NESN" rev.
Run WD utilities over it to remove crapware, should be able to format to FAT32.
I don't see how USB 2 backward compatible devices would NOT be recognized under Xbox 360 (2) or PS3 (2) devices once formatted to FAT32. YES, the USB 3 micro connector is pulling power, but it's using the USB 2 style pins built into it to do it.
Only thing that sucks, then, is IF these drives have the non-standard connector. Additional height (if any) should NOT be a factor.
I'll hope that these guys have the standard boards, then...PLUCK and play :)
If not, lesson learned for buying new HDDs....review thoroughly.

definately return the Toshiba. I got the same drive last month for $39 on sale. Considered myself lucky to get one but now regret it. As I write I'm trying to transfer all the files from the Cavio to my new WD ext because of all the errors. Works better on USB 2 but still slow. Not drive failure like many report, just awful performance here. (used on two new laptops with same results)

JustHereF 12-16-2012 01:03 PM

If you got a compusa store near you and want an alternative drive, or miss out on the various deals today.

WD 1TB My Passport portable external HDD:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applic...u=W10-8620

$69.99 after 15$ instant, $15AR.

P.s. If you're buying multiple drives or anything else, you can (google&) print out a $10 off $100 coupon.

(good through dec 22nd)

GrandmasterBBC 12-16-2012 01:22 PM

Curses! I had to jump on this one. I greatly prefer these portable drives of a larger standard external. Being able to fit 1TB in my pocket is a huge plus. I will rationalize this purchase by giving it to my wife to wrap for me and put under the tree. Merry Xmas to me!

The way it's still in stock, I am expecting a cancellation email in few days.

mines new, however it was shipped in a shoddy padded envelope. not the way you should be shipping hardrives. i plan to give this as a gift, now i have to let them now to run a sector scan before using it. just in case it got damaged. farking newegg

techjunkie78 12-19-2012 09:11 PM

received mine today. 2.5" external enclosure, single usb cable that is double ended on the drive side. Shipped in a box, not the best protection but probably OK.

Tried it on a brand new dell win7 laptop (including ports marked SS and with the power icons), a two year old dell win7 laptop, and a two year old win7 home-built tower plugged directly into the motherboard USB ports on back. None of the machines recognize the drive or even detect that anything is plugged into USB. It doesn't appear in disc management.

When I touch the drive case, I can feel it spin up and due an initial seek (it feels and sounds 100% normal in my experience); but that's it, nothing further happens.

DOA.

Necro 12-20-2012 12:13 PM

I got a padded envelope as well - this is a new low for crappy shipping if HDD's by NewEgg...

well, mine was in a box(roughly 1.5x the size of the original product box), with those brown recycled paper stuffed tight, nothing was moving

the device itself is suspended by those black plastic molds inside the original product box

not complaining about the packaging

rseiler 12-20-2012 03:05 PM

Envelope here. Why there's no consistency for these things is puzzling to me. But, as mentioned, at least it's suspended.

I've been looking at it with CrystalDiskInfo to see how it does with power cycling and load/unload cycling (head parking), and so far, both are stable. My APM was already set to 80h, as shown here, which means "Minimum power consumption without Standby." You can see it down this page:
http://community.wdc.com/t5/Other-Externals/WD-Elements-SE-2-5-quot-1Tb-Change-Spin-down-Time/m-p/219246#M3472

Update: Load/unload is up to 32 now. I don't know what the timeout for head parks is set at though. Does anyone else? Wdidle3 isn't going to work with USB.

PrncsNYC 12-20-2012 03:54 PM

Has anyone had experience with extension cables and this drive? I see that there are 1.5 and 3ft ones here. The 3ft ones might be problematic, and one user specifically mentions a problem with a WD drive.
