it's not the same machine Frys.com is selling though the model is the same. Core i3 vs core i5 is a significant difference.

jedialison 12-25-2012 05:55 PM

It's a great deal for an ivy bridge, but darned, those 1368x720 screens!

firstdavis 12-25-2012 05:56 PM

refurbished?

firstdavis 12-25-2012 06:09 PM

how is this? someone reply.. all set, just need to pull the trigger. Is it worth?

tsangwc 12-25-2012 06:23 PM

No USB 3.0

pt1122012 12-25-2012 06:28 PM

I think this has a USB 3.0.. there are 2 different specs given on the Frys site..but the 2nd spec at the bottom does mention USB 3.0. And if you look at the images, there are 2 USB 3.0 ports...

Also, these specs are not very detailed but if you google around for this lenevo model, it has more detailed specs and does have USB 3.0 in it.

for an i5 ivy bridge, you bet its worth it.

I have the exact same model, but replace it with windows 7 bcus the touchpad in my opinion doesnt work well. It's fast and quiet, only downside is it doesnt have a dedicated gpu, so dont expect to play games with it.

kallsid 12-25-2012 08:07 PM

Have a HP laptop since past cpl of years and thinking of replacing with this one..totally tired of the HP laptop

zionmagus 12-25-2012 08:34 PM

Shipping and tax makes this less hot. Tax can't do much about but I wish they would have free ship. It's Christmas for Christ's sake ;)

pdinc 12-25-2012 08:40 PM

Great deal. Note that the resolution on these screens are pretty low, however - 1366x768 is a resolution I have on my 11" laptop and on my 14" laptop, but it looks much worse on a 15.6" screen. If you are picky about the display and if you don't have an external monitor hookup when you use this, this can be a dealkiller.

koven 12-25-2012 08:43 PM

Well considering this is the i5 M version it won't be drastically different from the i3 aside from the tubro boost 2.5 -> 3.1GHz while the i3 stays at 2.4GHz w/o turbo boost (hence why the model number isnt so far off :) (3110/3210) as they're both dual core. That being said for a regular browsing, everyday laptop its still good. The onboard (Intel HD 4000) though will be considered more of a low-midrange in terms of performance so gamingwise you'll be at the lower spectrum but watch HD videos/movies you should be fine.

Just replace the 500GB HD with an SSD and you should be good to go for a regular email/social media/office/school work laptop. :)

Passmark [cpubenchmark.net] score:

i5-3210M --> 3848
i3-3110M --> 2935

so this i5 is about 31% faster than i3.

Alright grats you see benchmarks and numbers but for the value/purpose of this computer, most likely someone is just going to use it for "checking email/facebook/browsing the web, doing office work, doing school work, watching youtube videos, watching movies.. whatever.." not gaming since they both have onboard integrated graphics. Yes they can do light gaming but nothing too graphic extensive.

So will 31% faster on a word document make a difference? not really...

To get the most out of this device though, you can replace the slow HDD, replace it with an SSD, maybe put the 500GB into an enclosed external if they need it for space and you'll have a good machine for regular use.

its not just benchmarks. Its added speed to video processing, Photoshop and other cpu intense programs. Gaming isn't the only thing that need power :)

Either way why not go with the i5 if you have the chance? it makes the laptop more valuable for resale in later years

Mohjong 12-25-2012 11:40 PM

Wow! Gotta cancel the Lenovo Y580 deal and get this instead.
I don't game that much and it's like they are all from the 580 line so maybe it could run a little Far Cry 3.

True that, I was just basing off if someone couldn't get the Fry's deal and were looking for an alternative the amazon one is just as good. Processing power is needed for those types of programs as well but if they were really into editing or rendering then they would need to consider something else. But as far as regular use and regular editing w/ photoshop and what not the i3 is still a good CPU, and they both have 4 threads so it should compensate a little. As long as its a good clocked sandy/ivy with decent amount of ram and an SSD it should handle everyday tasks just fine. :yummy:

If you're going to do any bit of gaming, light/casual I would stick with the Y580 w/ the dedicated GPU. Intel's 3000/4000 onboard has come a long way but will still be a little lacking in the GPU power.

Is Windows 8 the same as Windows 7 in the sense that you can get an SSD and install Windows cleanly using the key from the sticker on the laptop? Windows XP didn't allow this using the Certificate of Authenticity key, but Windows 7 does. Hoping for the same with Windows 8.

Two of the easiest and cheapest upgrades a person can do on their own. Do people really keep spinning drives in laptops these days? Or even need 500GB as an OS drive? get an SSD kit, swap the drives, and now you have a laptop with a super fast SSD along with a bonus 500GB portable external. Screen resolution is another story though

Just having an i5 doesn't make this a good deal. An i3 in this configuration for most people would be better, because most people aren't going to utilize the additional processing power of the i5. If this had an i3 and was ~$25 cheaper it would be a better deal in my opinion.

But having an I5 Ivy Bridge makes this an extremely slick deal at 398, in case the front page wasn't obvious enough . People can decide for themselves if they need an i5 or i3, but 25 cheaper for this with an i3 would be a lukewarm deal at best. Microcenter has had an acer i3 ivy bridge for 350 for awhile now, and even that isn't hot. Just because you feel like the i3 ivy bridge is enough for you doesn't mean a big discount on an i5 is not a good deal.

Looks pretty good!

Just a word of caution for anyone that is really critical of keyboards (aka a make or break requirement), this keyboard has a shift key on the right hand that is shorter than normal. If you're easily adaptable, it's all good, but it is quite annoying coming from a Dell Laptop (E1505) with normal keys (Home computer) and a Lenovo T4XX series (work computer) to this laptop. It takes some getting used to and while I don't expect anyone to deny such a good deal because of it, I just thought I'd throw it out there!

it is a third gen graphics are fine. Screen is what you get for $400. Paying $300 more for high res and touchscreen is paying almost 75% more for the entire laptop.

Intel HD4000 graphics is ok. It just doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.
