ATTENTION

For people worried about quality, Seiko makes some of the best movements available in the sub $1000 category. The also make some astonishingly expensive watches such as the Spring Drive Spacewalk at $28,000. They produce most of their movements in-house (which is more than can be said for some brand names like Movado, Bell and Ross, etc where you are paying a fortune for them to build a small case). It may not be Swiss but Seiko makes fantastic, high quality watches for the budget conscious. It's not a Patek Phillipe, but if you don't have a spare $100,000 to blow, this is the way to go for a good everyday watch.

As far as losing time, with a good quality quartz movement, that should not be a problem. You will have to worry about battery changes, but a Seiko 5 is a mechanical watch with all the inherent problems that come with that. A good mechanical watch can typically be made no more accurate than 2-3 seconds per day. Your typical inexpensive quartz is usually good to 0.5 seconds per day or better. So for the poster saying his Seiko 5 lost time, any mechanical watch without a costly tourbillion would possibly lose time (depending on conditions) despite spending $10,000 on it.

So bottom line, if you are looking in this price range, you are getting an excellent watch with a high quality quartz movement that with care should last a loooooooong time. I know people with Seikos well into 20+ years with a new battery every 3-5 years. If you are looking for a watch connoisseur's watch...well I don't know what you are doing on slickdeals. I'm personally interested in watches but can't imagine affording the ultra high end watches and enjoy a couple of excellent Seiko's that have been serving me very well.

This watch also has a sapphire crystal which is usually not found in watches this inexpensive. It should be very scratch resistant with daily use.

It has a 2 year Ashford Warranty. I've bought several watches from them... very honest company with very good customer service.

If you've never heard of Seiko... :dontknow:

xnap30 12-29-2012 08:57 PM

Guess they've only heard of Rolex...

Seiko makes really good watches and clock parts

itsalladream 12-29-2012 09:12 PM

Looks like a nice watch. Seiko rocks...my wife used to work at the head office near Tokyo...hmmm...wonder if she could still get a hot 80-90% off for me. ;)

climber 12-29-2012 09:14 PM

does this still lose time like my $60 Seiko 5 ( i seem to lose a couple minutes a week)

at what level of watch / type of movement does this stop happening?

jbn8 12-29-2012 09:21 PM

Nice to see a good price on a seiko with a sapphire crystal face.

I hope that stops happening with any watch over $20 in today's world. Quartz is not exactly a cutting edge technology anymore.

That's because Time = Money. You're not spending enough money on your watch and thus you are losing time.

This watch has a Quartz movement. Most of the Seiko 5's have automatic movements and you cant expect much of a $60 automatic watch...

redxxd 12-29-2012 09:44 PM

Seiko was started by this Japanese guy after he found out other watches to be sub-standard...

Beautiful watch. Would have bought if I hadn't bought one from them just last month. Repped.

davidwhangchoi 12-29-2012 10:06 PM

just brought it. never thought i buy a watch but had a friend, who's an avid watch collector, show me some of his watches and just out of interest looked on SD for one. This one looks pretty good and nice reviews on Amazon.

steaksauce 12-29-2012 10:23 PM

Just busted the crystal on my ESQ today while trying to snap back the back cover after replacing the battery. Doh. I'm grabbing one of these and I don't think I'll regret it. :)

ChicagoEric 12-29-2012 10:55 PM

Thanks for posting. Bought one and used urlhasbeenblocked to get another 3%. I have a few Seiko watches. Liked the look and the price was outstanding when you consider no tax and free shipping. In an era when most people don't wear watches anymore, they are one of the few jewerly items a man should wear. No braclets, just a nice looking watch.

z32tt 12-29-2012 11:06 PM

Shame its not titanium. Don't care about chronograph.

wakkoss 12-29-2012 11:36 PM

I got two Invictas and a Breitling for Christmas or I'd be all over it too.

Tax for me :-( Great looking watch though.

thebtran 12-29-2012 11:45 PM

wow thats looks realllly nice but i don't wear a watch but yeah great!

pharmerken 12-29-2012 11:46 PM

Can someone confirm if this is really a sapphire crystal on this watch? Seiko's website doesn't say anything and I came across several sites describing this watch as mineral crystal, not sapphire.

calibmw 12-29-2012 11:53 PM

Very nice timepiece, I've had Seiko 5 Sport for the past 7 years as everyday watch, couldn't be happier.
The glass looks like day one.

Did you order first and then have them adjust the price? Or did you chat with them and have the price adjusted and ordered through the live chat?

Good call. Worked like a charm.

I chatted first. The live chat rep had me place the order at full price then give him the order number for an adjustment. Already received the adjustment confirmation email from them.

Thanks.

Too bad coupon doesn't work with this one.

I was able to chat with "larry" and he applied the coupon code to this watch. 139 shipped.

azderik 12-30-2012 06:44 AM

Amazon had it for $156 but now OOS. Seems to sell for around $156 to $185 as lowest prices. Don't know why this made FP.

Newegg is $168

I have a different model Seiko (SNP007) with the kinetic movement and sapphire crystal. I believe it's comparable to this one. It's heavy - nothing light about it.

shintax 12-30-2012 10:07 AM

Very nice watch but I bought an Citizen Eco-Drive not too long ago and can't seem to wanting to go back to watches that need batteries changing.

I agree, not that special. Would rather have one of the $80 watches and save 60 bucks and still have a beautiful watch.

I have a JB Seamaster Omega but always wanted a second watch for everyday use. Citizen really impresses me with their Eco-Drive line. Too bad not too many sales on those. I totally understand your point on battery changes.

ripcurl 12-30-2012 07:00 PM

Have a Seiko from 1988 (?) ... very nice watch. When having it serviced by the local watch shop, had asked about a TAG that they had. Watch shop owner made it a point to tell me to keep my watch, his opinion.... TAG's were overpriced junk.

Hon3yBadger 12-30-2012 07:08 PM

Anyone have experience with the Seiko bands. I have a Citizen stainless steel band that got very scratched up. Also how does one get this fitted being that you bought the watch online.

Also anyone have experience with Sapphire Crystal? Same watch's face scratched too easy in my opinion

That's too bad. I hate heavy watches. I know some folks like its' sturdiness but I find it rather bulky. Titanium is the way to go.

the "sapphlex crystal" on these will not scratch unless you really really screw up or try very hard to scratch it
