This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

I got a raincheck for 2 more units. Details.

OOS on BBY.

Everyone, Amazon already has the free bridge offer, let's get them to match the $299 price so we can use all the Amazon Gift Cards we got for the holidays!

Click Here to select the product
[amzn.to] and then hit Ctrl-F (CMD-F on Mac) and type "Tell us about..." and then fill out the form to tell them about the lower price. If enough people do it they may match!

Awesome deal, but it already says sold out for shipping and store pickup.

Is there a (different) link?

Care to give link? I checked bestbuy.com and see sonos5 there for 399

m37 12-30-2012 07:32 AM

Seems to be sold out for me as well

Best Buy [bestbuy.com]

EDIT - now the link says "Coming Soon" - where it used to say "Sold Out Online"

blackblaze 12-30-2012 07:38 AM

So to compare this to a logitech squeezebox touch, this is just a wireless speaker with great sound in which its streaming from PC/phone/tablet vs. squeezebox that already has the music part built in to stream and play music, but probably not as good in sound quality? That seems like a fair comparison of the two?

Looks like they shut it down quick. I got email ( ready for pickup).
I saw this in the Sunday paper BB flyer, thought it might be a mistake. I'll update when I go to pickup. This is the link I ordered from.

That shows me the Play:5 as $399 and the Play:3 for $299 - which are the normal prices.

It's $399.98 for Play 5

Its not a mistake, as I verified in store that is the sale price. Maybe there is a glitch online, but the in store system also has the silver for $299.99

Yes, silver only is on sale, but still says "availability = coming soon".
Play:5 for $299 is a GREAT DEAL. Added bridge ($50 value) for free is icing on the cake.

Play:5 is great. I have 3 of them and my listening experience elevated to a great level.
Amazon (and PCRichard) had a deal couple of weeks back for 299 after 100 rebate.

Are they giving the free bridge with the silver in store?

joeposh 12-30-2012 08:13 AM

Judging from the fact that the ad has it for $399 and they pulled the listing from the site (google cache confirms it was at $299 at some point though), I'd say this is a pricing error that may not have been addressed in store yet. If we can confirmation that people are successfully walking out the door with a silver 5 in hand (plus free bridge), that would be huge.

xendrome 12-30-2012 08:14 AM

I just bought a Sonos Play5 (with free bridge) for xmas - so far it is great. I'm keeping an eye for deals on more, since $399 is a bit expensive.
Also, I wish the bridge had a built in hdd - that could hold at least 40-60GB of music.
For now I have to have my computer on in order to stream my music.

That is just saying a black color is an available option, but the system will ring the black up at 399 and the silver at the advertised paper price.

This^. I tried that and it rand up $399.99. On the shelf they have the black on display with the $299.99 white price tag. On the black unit display itself it has the promo for the free bridge for $399.99! Crazy ad display!

joeposh 12-30-2012 10:01 AM

I got the silver/white and bridge for $317 out the door in DC. Cashier marveled at the interest in these, saying "Man, I've sold a bunch of these today. I thought Bose was supposed to be the best".

travster 12-30-2012 10:06 AM

I can confirm this in store! White and silver only. Thanks OP!

tatnai 12-30-2012 10:13 AM

Great price. Wife won't let me get another, says we have enough (two play5s and one connect). She just doesn't understand. :(

Wireless to what then? Sonos is a turnkey system. The Bridge and Connect complete the setup. The bridge connects to your router and enables the wireless aspect.

sammybaby 12-30-2012 10:30 AM

Picked up in store $320 OTD. They gave me black. Now have five Play 5's. Think I'm done. Love Sonos!!!

It's not meant to be a standalone wireless setup but part of a system geared towards whole house audio tied into your main system. And you can tie in hard drives of media, not just direct to the Play speakers.

Well you can always go on the cheap with rocketfish or if you buy into the apple ecosystem you can get an airport express and airplay capable speakers. For those that can't prewire their home for speakers and do audio distribution througjout the house on top of the expense of actually doing it right, sonos is as easy as it gets and can be controlled from your IOS or android device. And if you move, you unplug and take it all with you. If you don't see the value, you don't have the need.

spiffikins 12-30-2012 11:30 AM

Read the flyer this morning, and figured it was a typo - went online and couldn't find anything.

Used the link someone posted earlier, and added a Black Play 5 to my cart - came in at $399 - that was a couple hours ago. Re-reading this thread about successful in store purchases, I went back to the site to see what the inventory was near me - and the black Play 5 in my cart showed up at $299 - so I quickly hit the "buy" button!

My credit card says it's been charged, my store has none in stock so the site says 4-7 days before I can pick it up. I'm not holding my breath, but if it happens, I'll be a happy camper!

I had asked the question before on squeezebox vs sonos, and at least with SB touch, its just a wireless receiver that you can add to any receiver or speaker whereas the Sonos is the speaker with an available app, and bridge to complete a similar setup as the SB.

I don't think you could use the Sonos like the SB in that you couldn't stream through sonos into your home receiver to let your bigger speakers play your music, correct?

mrcharlieboi 12-30-2012 11:41 AM

You need a sonos connect or sonos connect amp to play sonos content/app through an existing stereo/home theater. I use a connect and love it. The price is high, but it's an awesome system.

Ahh, ok. So if you have a receiver and speakers already set up in an area, and want to synch up the music through that along with other sources, you use the Connect. If you just have speakers you want to power that are not hooked up to a receiver, but can be powered through the Connect AMP, then get that. Got it.

Can these be used as basically a sounbar for a tv while allowing you to stream music wirelessly as well. Also, do they have blue tooth and how does the sound compare to say the bose blue tooth speaker that retails for 300? thank you.

this sounds like a question best answered by going to your nearest BB that have these and doing a demo. I plan to do the same later on today.

yeah i'm curious about getting one i just don't know enough about them. i don't really see a hook up for a tv other than a line in. i would want at least optical i would think to run it as a sound bar. if anyone knows a lot about these, i'd appreciate some insight.

I'll let someone else answer, but based on this news, it doesn't seem you can use it as a sound bar, or why else come out with one that is dedicated as a soundbar

InGeNeTiCs 12-30-2012 12:27 PM

A lot of people aren't getting the point of the sonos system. It's not a 'speaker'...it's a whole audio system. The squeezbox is a good little system, but it doesn't hold a candle to the quality of the sonos, either the play:3 or play:5. Also, sonos is controlled from a centralized system, not on the unit itself. For example, I can get some music going in my livingroom from my spotify account on my phone, go over to my computer and change the track, then my wife can use her ipod to play some music in the kitchen. Then, deciding she hates my music, moves her music to the livingroom as well.

Also, if we have a party, rather than blasting our music in JUST the livingroom, we can play it at a lower volume in ALL the rooms. They're a little overpriced, but, they don't disappoint.

I have a small squeezbox at my work, and while it's good, it's not as good as the sonos...not by a long shot.

Sonos components are connecting in their own wireless network. They do not use Bluetooth.

There are 2 types of Sonos components - the "PLAY3" and "PLAY5" which are standalone systems that have speakers included, and the "CONNECT" type components that you can plug into speakers (connect:amp) or an amplified stereo system of your choice.

If you connect a component to an audio source (television, stereo, ipod, line-in) it becomes a source for *any* Sonos component on your network. You can use a NAS drive or computer to use your audio file collection as a source. Plus there are tons of streaming sources online (pandora, iheartradio, amazon cloud player, aupeo!, last.fm, songza, etc).

You can sync some or all of your components so that multiple rooms are playing the same song - or you can have every component playing different songs - from different sources.

if you have a component connected to your stereo in the living room, you can listen to the audio from your stereo source in your bedroom - while your sonos in the living room plays streaming Pandora radio.

Control is via a software app on your computer(s) or on your iphone or android phone.

Expensive product, but excellent quality - setup was super straightforward.

edit: sound quality - I have the PLAY3 and PLAY5 - PLAY3 is good for small rooms (bedroom) PLAY5 is much richer sound, I have zero complaints, easily as good (to my ears) as Bose. If you're a true audiophile, buy the CONNECT and use whatever amplifier and speakers makes you happy :)

This is still active on BB's website. The link posted earlier (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/null/...7700050019) still works.

from that link click "Check Shipping & Availability" and then proceed accordingly. I only see the black Play 5 listed which will ship for free but the bridge needs to be picked up. If I have to go to the store I might as well pick them both up which I'll be doing shortly.

I have had this sitting in my "saved for later" cart on Amazon for a very long time waiting for a price drop that never came (or at least I never saw) so I was glad to see this deal. Thanks OP!

squeezebox touch can be linked and they can be controlled through the SB app, similar to the Sonos. The Sonos probably is an improvement of what could be done through multiple SB touch setups, but now including wireless speakers vs using your own set of speakers.

I just bought a Big Jambox. I know the SONOS isn't bluetooth but is there a difference in sound quality?

blackblaze 12-30-2012 12:40 PM

This system adds up quick for doing an entire home, even at $300 a piece. And then there is the pairing of two sonos for stereo output (if Im quoting that correctly). Im think for a SFH or townhouse, you'd probably want at least 4 of these for good coverage, depending on how you entertain and where you want music at.

If you want to do an entire home you are better off buying the Sonos Amp and playing through a surround sound system with multi-room speakers setup. Though a much better option for an entire home, it wouldn't be any cheaper then buying 4 Play 5's. If done correctly it would likely be much more money.

Technically yes, but you would have to use the 'AUDIO LINE-IN Auto-detecting 3.5mm audio line-in connection'. Its not exactly ideal but would work if you really wanted it to. I personally would prefer to just use the built TV speakers before this option.

I was about to jump on this deal as well until I saw this and previous posts... So this system requires 3 devices to actually work, i.e., Play 3/5, Connect and Bridge?!? SB only requires one device, such is the case with the Boom to function. So even with the bridge at $299+tax and the free bridge, it will still require another $350 for the Connect?!?

Thanks; I've been eyeing another one of these for a while. 25% off if a great deal. Just a FYI the guy at BB told me I need to get a SONOS CONNECT in order for this to work. Total BS all u need is the bridge and the speaker. if you choose to expand in the future all you need is the additional speakers, no need for another bridge.

You don't even need the bridge. You can plug the Speaker directly into a network cable and be good to go. You do loose the wireless capabilities without the bridge though.

No suds2.

For $299.99 you get everything you need to get a wireless setup going. Only two pieces - Sonos 5 + Bridge.

The connect is an alternative to the Sonos 5 that allows you to bring your own speakers/amp.

In for 1. Thx OP!!

peanutty 12-30-2012 01:17 PM

whoa, i have never NEVER seen these on sale. the only deal i knew of was the occasional free bridge offer. this deal is awesome.

big thanks and reps to you, OP! :)

Glames 12-30-2012 01:19 PM

Just picked up 2 black Play 5s and a wireless bridge, thanks OP.
Like another poster said, there has been some decent deals on
these recently, but I'm worried they won't last long.

I spent 3 days last week researching whole home audio.
If you just wanted one speaker in the house that can play Internet
Radio, your personal music collection or whatever is currently on
your phone, then an Airplay/SB/Bluetooth speaker will work for you.
But looking at some of these Airplay/BT speakers, they can be pricey
if you want decent audio.

At the end of the day, I compared Sonos to AirPlay. Once I decided
that I wanted 2 speakers and an audio source at the HT, the price
comparison between the Sonos and an Airplay solution became
comparable. But with the Sonos, it is way more flexible and supposed
to be more user friendly, so I think it's a no brainer.

Just my 2 cents and this is a solution that works for me.

Shakespeare 12-30-2012 01:22 PM

I guess no one likes the white speaker to go with their entertainment system colors.

this used to not be the case. but Sonos just updated their software so that direct streaming from the music device is possible. great added feature. so BB was right this time. ;)

exactly, the connect and connect amp are for use with home receivers or speakers alone. All you need is the sonos speaker and bridge to get you under way.

The SB sounds almost as good and honestly, I can buy 4 SB's for one Sonos and sync them for much better sounding system. The SB also can be controlled on the device which makes it very useful for having around the house. The Sonos app is slicker but the SB one works well and ultimately the SB is just a much much better value/price ratio. I have 4 SBs and very happy with the setup. Sonos is great too, but it's for those with houses nicer and better than mine (SB looks nice too).

I don't think you could use the Sonos like the SB in that you couldn't stream through sonos into your home receiver to let your bigger speakers play your music, correct?

You need the Connect and Bridge to use the Sonos speakers. It's not a standalone solution, though I would imagine you could use a 5 with the aux in and connect a media source and use the Bridge to connect to other Play speakers. Never tried it.

And picked up to black 5's in store for $299 a pop. Salesman tried to say the free Bridge didn't apply, and I asked to see where it said that promo ended. Then he tried to dupe another couple the same way. Was peeved because they picked up an open box 3 for 200.

I probably should've clarified that part. People are comparing it with wireless options so I mentioned the Bridge and Connect for the integration aspect of it all. Honestly, if someone is wired for ethernet everywhere they probably are wired for audio too. If not, shame on the installer for not setting them up on that aspect of it.

i have the bridge -- which, although it's not essential, should be purchased for allowing wireless-speaker capability. (otherwise, you have to hardwire the speaker to your router, and that just defeats the purpose of buying Sonos, imo.)

the one thing i can't seem to visualize is what the Connect does. do you physically connect it to a receiver, a stereo speaker...?

If you don't have the bridge, you just need one sonos system hard wired and the rest will still operate wirelessly. So, it doesn't really defeat the purpose if you were going to have a sonos play speaker in the same room as your router anyway. We are going to have one in the same room as our router and still got the bridge though so the speaker can be across the room from the router.

If you don't need the bridge, do a price match to Target and use your red card. They won't give you the free bridge, but you can convince them to give you $100 off the play:5 and with the red card it makes it $285 plus tax.

that's what i meant by buying the bridge, if possible. a big reason why Sonos is highly rated is because of superb quality of their wireless network. routers may not be situated in an ideal location for a speaker to be physically connected (as your and my setup seems to be); so a bridge/connect would be required. also, the bridge allows for the one speaker to be easily moved anywhere a power outlet is located. BB throwing in a free bridge with a Play 5 for $300 makes this a great deal.

good idea with price matching Target. don't have their red card, but would be awesome at $285 + tax.

Not true, the play 5 acts as a bridge...so I'm not sure why they'd be including a bridge as well if you plug it into the ethernet. I have one play:5 plugged in via ethernet, and three play:3's via wifi..no bridge at all in my home.

And this is a hi-fi system, not just wireless speakers. Those wishing to use this for home theater should hold off...sonos just had an fcc filing for a 'playbar'...so you may want to see how that pans out. Companies don't pass things through the fcc unless they're ready to sell them.

You'd be surprised. I tell everyone that ever opens up a wall to run anything and everything they can. Most people aten't running the last two channels on their receiver anyway. Might as well wire them up to speakers in another room. Heck, you can easily run two pair of speakers off those two channels. Usually plenty of juice for house audio.

I regards to the Connect. Most people are not running their AV system from a computer. They usually have a main setup with everythong goong through the receiver. It'd be kinda dumb to put a Play speaker in that room. Plus many are using the Smart features of their tv or blu ray player for Pandora and such. So if it's run through the receiver, you need the connect to go through the rest of the Sonos setup.

The playbar is simply a sound bar version for tv's. Will either be two or threw channel from what the sonos rep was hinting at. I think it's meant to be for standlone tv setups. Right now the Sonos reps don't recommend the 5 for tv use mainly because it's not stereo. Which most could care less since the SQ of the 5 trounces the stereo sound in any tv set. But I don't believe the rep was hinting at Sonos becoming an option for surround sound outside of that bar being a front stereo speaker. He waa only giving up so much info. It'd be nice to see it have a digital in for better 3 channel sound over analog.

The only downside is that the $285 is without a free bridge as they don't match "bundles."

Still, if you don't need the bridge and if you don't want to bother craigslisting it, not a bad deal at all.

spiffikins 12-30-2012 05:54 PM

After placing my order this morning to be delivered to my local store, I started worrying - this really seems like a mistake to me - so I found a store 30 minutes away, that had stock and placed a second order. Waited anxiously for the "Order ready for pickup" and headed out.

Now that I have my PLAY:5 (black) safely in had ($325 OTD) I cancelled my original order at the local store - I'd love 2, but my budget says NO :)

This one is going in the kitchen/dining room area, and will be my 2nd PLAY:5. I also have a PLAY:3 in my bedroom and a bridge (that came with my PLAY:3 for free last Christmas), and the other PLAY:5 in the living room.

The new bridge will probably go up on ebay or craigslist.

the CONNECT lets you hook any existing sound systems with amplifiers to your Sonos network. If you have an existing stereo system with speakers and amplifier, use the line in/out or RCA jacks on the CONNECT to allow your stereo (radio/cd player etc) be a source of music for other Sonos players on the network, and to let your stereo play music from the CONNECT as the source (stream Pandora or listen to the mp3's on your computer through your stereo speakers)

if you just have a nice pair of speakers, the CONNECT:AMP let's you plug the speakers into it, and it acts as the amplifier for those speakers, and lets you play any of your "source" media through those speakers.

Hope this helps!

Can you link me to somewhere that says this? It's pretty much the one thing that stops me from purchasing a Sonos. I look on the Sonos website and I get this

"STREAM MUSIC FROM AN IPHONE®, IPAD™ OR IPOD TOUCH®
Sonos wirelessly plays your iTunes® music, direct from your iPhone®, iPad® or iPod touch®, to any room in your home."
-Makes me think you can just use these items as a control

"LISTEN TO MUSIC THAT’S STORED ON AN IPOD OR IPHONE
Dock, charge and wirelessly play the music from an iPod or iPhone with the SONOS DOCK (sold separately)."
-Makes me think I need to buy a dock

On the Amazon website I get..

"Stream any song from your iPhone or iPad using AirPlay® by connecting an Apple AirPort Express® via line-in to your PLAY:5. "
-Makes me think I need to by an Airport

It's all so confusing to me. Hope you or anyone can help me out here. Much appreciated.

Be happy with your Kia....I will take a BMW at a discount. I've owned Sonos components for over 6 years and they are without a doubt the best consumer music system. I'm an informed consumer and actual legacy Sonos owner, not a lamb. I know what I'm talking about. You, on the other hand, more than likely haven't heard or actually even seen a Sonos system in person...thus making your opinion worthless. Good try though.

value is different to different people....

Is this high end ... probably not.

Does this provide for high quality music enjoyment ... absolutely.

Is this better than squeeze box ... my ears say yes.

Oh by the way, sound engineering is my trade.

Not another lamb but someone that made an informed decision when a good deal came along..... as everyone should.

muniala 12-31-2012 01:31 AM

The Sonos is way overpriced at $399 and still overpriced at $299. You're paying a huge premium for essentially a cheap boombox with wireless streaming added.

Just because it is a $100 discount doesn't make it a better value or a deal.

The Squeezebox touch and duet system is a much better system in terms of sound quality, flexibility and overall in terms of user interface. The touch screen on the touch and the handheld duet remote are just fantastic. For the same price you can combine it with a much better sound system and get whole house streaming from a media server.

The squeezebox touch in particular uses very high quality DACs and with good quality audio files give you a superior sonic experience

Squeezbox Duet [cnet.com]

Squeezebox Touch Review [cnet.com]

Stereophile Review [stereophile.com]

These are discontinued but still available on sale from some merchants - They used to street at $220 and $ 190

Cdixonsu 12-31-2012 03:04 AM

The Sonos is a speaker and one that you don't any need extra gadgets for. I can use my PC, iPhone, iPad or other devices to control it. I like that I don't have yet another gadget to look for when I want to play music. I can control all of my Sonos speakers from any one of my existing devices and stream music from my media server, phone, XM, Pandora, etc.

I feel like you are trying to compare apples to oranges. Squezebox doesn't seem to be as good for multi-speaker, multi-source audio streaming and is more costly from the prices I am seeing.

[QUOTE=Cdixonsu;56506830]The Sonos is a speaker and one that you don't any need extra gadgets for.

Squezebox doesn't seem to be as good for multi-speaker, multi-source audio streaming and is more costly from the prices I am seeingTh squeeze box does not have as good of a speaker, that's true, but the whole beauty of these devices is having a whole house music system. Which is why I'm not wasting money on something like this.

navinrjohnson 12-31-2012 05:09 AM

This is great. I bought a Play 5 about six months ago and use it every day. I replaced a room full of surround speakers and equipment with one box for our living room and it is amazing. And it looks much nicer.

WooHoo just scored the sonos 5 for $299!! DH got me the sonos 3 for xmas and I love it! Thanks!!!!

Scored an open box for 255 including wireless bridge

lanesutton 12-31-2012 08:53 AM

Out of stock. Best Buy has sold out online. I doubt places will match prices now.
I chatted with ABT and they said that Sonos has a set price model and maintains the same prices across all authorized dealers. I would think Best Buy is an authorized dealer.

Where'd you get the open box unit? J&R?

Not bad, at least they had it. I would go for brand new for $45 more.
Throw in the Best Buy gift card deal from last week. $50 + bonus $10 and cashback = great deal.

You must've snagged quite a few Kindle cards.
At least Best Buy allows you to buy gift cards with one of their gift cards.

Confused. if i wanted to play music from my phone/tablet i just need the bridge and some speakers? I dont need the ConnectAmp? Sound would be crummy though wouldnt it? Without some kind of amp?

Just because it is a $100 discount doesn't make it a better value or a deal.

The Squeezebox touch and duet system is a much better system in terms of sound quality, flexibility and overall in terms of user interface. The touch screen on the touch and the handheld duet remote are just fantastic. For the same price you can combine it with a much better sound system and get whole house streaming from a media server.

The squeezebox touch in particular uses very high quality DACs and with good quality audio files give you a superior sonic experience

Squeezebox Touch Review [cnet.com]

Stereophile Review [stereophile.com]

These are discontinued but still available on sale from some merchants - They used to street at $220 and $ 190

actually a $100 off with a free bridge is a deal, considering its never been offered below MSRP EVER!

For the people that prefer the squeezebox, I hope you realize that logitech discontinued the device and is no longer supporting it. Go luck looking for updates on new features or bug fixes. Oh you and have fun with warranty issues now. Though I won't argue that Sonos is cheap, it functions really well, they have great customer service, great warranty service, and they continuously add new features and updates.

You know Logitech will be offering SB (at least radio) owners a firmware upgrade to the UE brand and warranty and services will still be supported for at least 2 more years.. And as long as it works, no harm especially when the Sonos is at least 3x more expensive. You can break a lot of SBs before the break even point comes out and that's only if the Sonos doesn't break.

Even if the Sonos does break, they've got great customer service. Their known for replacing units even out of warranty. Logitechs CS is a joke.

I own both Squeezebox (original and radio) and Sonos. Sonos is by FAR, the better system. It is as plug and play as can be and the software and apps are grade A.

Pay the extra and get the Sonos. Well worth the investment.

UE Smart Radio $179
Sonos Play 5 $299

$179 x 3 = $537

I would check your math because 1.67 != 3

This also doesn't account for the countless additional features that the Sonos offers over the Squuezebox. Such as integrating with an existing multi-room home theater system or streaming music directly from a iphone or ipad (and android devices shortly in the future). Sonos is also MUCH SIMPLER to install. I wouldn't even dare buying a squeezebox for a family member or friend. It would only mean countless hours of setting up their devices and providing phone tech support when something goes wrong. When it comes to the Sonos device, even my grandmother could set it up.

If you are looking for a overly complicated cheapo single room wifi enable radio, squeezebox is for you. For everyone else, spend the extra few $$$ and get the Sonos. If you are so strapped for cash that you cannot do it right the first time and afford spending the extra $120, then you should probably be spending your time looking for a new job then trolling the SD forums.

To be fair you also need to compare the Play 3 to the squeezebox. The play 5 is MUCH more of a radio than the Play 3, so to get the Play 5 at the Play 3 price certainly makes this slick.

SB radio is 119 now and can be had for 100 now and then. Sonos is no longer 299 and is normally 4. 3x was being generous.

And I own both too. Sonos might be better by like 10-20% max but one Sonos is not better than 4 SBs which is the route I went with.

The 3 for $299 with the bridge is elsewhere

Sonos [sonos.com] (the 3 says it doesn't ship until Jan 11 though)

Amazon [amazon.com] is the same

The 5 for the same price will be the hard one to find.

Also...

The Connect Amp is a Sonos Connect with a built in amplifier so you can use your own speakers instead of one of the Play speakers. This comes in handy when people want inwall speakers but don't have a way to run the wiring through the house. It's easy to extend an outlet into a closet and run wires through one wall to the speakers. Or if you have some nice bookshelves you want to utilize or whatever.

All the SB comparisons are just funny. It's fine if you can't appreciate the complete integration into whole house audio and one's existing main system. It's fine if you don't want the integration into IOS or Android and the seamless remote functionality of it all. It's fine if you don't want the better sound quality the 5 provides or the flexibility the Connect Amp provides. But don't try and compare them like they're apples to apples.

I'm surprised with all the cheapasses in here, no one has really gone off on the Rocketfish products or Apple's solution with an Airport Express and Airplay devices.

They updated the controller software in December. If you have iOS 6 (we have an iphone 5 and an Ipad in the house) the system can play the music from the phone wirelessly. This only works for stored music, unlike airtunes, you can't use it to stream audio from videos. Only for music stored locally on the idevice. I can personally vouch that it works.

Another overlooked part ofsonos is that every piece generates its own wifi, acting as a bridge for the rest. This network can be used by your computers and smartphones for Internet, which gives me 5 bars in the bedroom where I only get limited signal from he regular router...

You know my 4 SBs do integrate into my whole household through wifi, using my Synology server for it's contents and can be controlled from a web browser, an app on my iPad and Galaxy S3. They can all sync and play the same pandora/spotify/mp3 or play different tracks. I don't have a connect amp so i can't compare but for most my 4 SBs do a heck of a lot more than my Play 5 and bridge.

d3distracted 12-31-2012 01:42 PM

Just picked mine up in Framingham, MA. Only black available for order last night but wanted white. So went back into store after pickup to see if any white on hand. No luck but there are 8 in black in stock on the floor even though said they were out online. Only possible catch is signage said $399 though did note free bridge with purchase.

Any ideas about possibilities to swap for White? Any better options than waiting a couple of weeks to get more in stock and swapping black for white?

Yes, your Synology NAS. Don't think the average SD'er is putting out for that. They're lucky they're going to buy a Linkstation which has a hard time running the SB software. Cheap NAS's don't seem to play well with SB and then you're back to being married to a running computer. I'll concede my android/ios point was a bit on the wrong side, and while I'm not an Apple fan, their point of things "just working" seems to carry over to Sonos as opposed to SB where the open sourced software and reliance on the quality of the homeowner's wireless network can prove to be problematic for quite a few. You can throw SlimServer on cheap Buffalos, but again, it's more hacking than many don't want to deal with. Heck, some don't even want to bother rooting and ROM'ing their phones or tablets. Now they have to do it to go computerless with their whole home audio setup? With the software and private wifi network built in to all the Sonos products, it's a turnkey solution. I remember reading one review where the guy praised SB and downplayed the wireline line wifi extenders he bought to get coverage everywhere in his house.

If you don't mind tinkering, SB can definitely do that job and have some benefits. You obviously like to tinker and dropped coin on the Synology. Doesn't put you as the run of the mill person looking to do whole home audio. Again, just like those of us that like to root our phones and load custom roms and all that. We're a small minority in the grand scheme.

Also, just some cool things. You can set up a pair of Sonos Plays to be L & R stereo. The job I'm doing now will have a 5 in the far corner of the LR and DR setup as just that. Then when the PlayBar comes out, I'll mount that under the TV with soundbar mounts from Parts Express and have that neatly wrapped solution for the standalone TV in the bedroom. The guy lives on laptops that are never running so I plan on ripping his 500+ CD Collection (which will become mine as well :-) ) and pop it on a cheap NAS so he can actually listen to some of the music that's been collecting dust. He's a neophyte when it comes to electronics, and if I attempted a Squeezebox or Airport setup I'd have to babysit him. No thanks.

But with all the info out there, I'd be inclined to give SB a try for shits and giggles. Always love playing with new gear.

Great deal....got mine yesterday. Thanks OP!

bbixler 01-01-2013 12:38 PM

Purchased the 5 at Target and got them to price match the Best Buy ad. Wouldn't give me the bridge for free (already have one so I didn't need it anyway) but now I have the Black 5 and don't have to wait for it to ship to Best Buy or have them send me a cancellation email.

1Audioman 01-01-2013 12:45 PM

Picked up my Black 5 and free bridge at BB just North of Pittsburgh yesterday. Waiting for a second Black 5 to arrive at another local BB. The second free bridge was already in stock at the store. Arrival date on the original email said Thursday the 3rd.

fuberwil 01-01-2013 12:50 PM

Went to local best buy and they were out but they were able to order it online and ship if to store for free. They also gave me the black one instead of the white. Doesn't hurt to give it a shot!

hermey 01-01-2013 01:59 PM

I picked up mine. However, I also got a raincheck for 2 additional units at this price.

I brought the ad at the front of the store to the customer service counter. When I asked for 2, they looked at the ad to see if there was a purchase limit (which there is not). They then gave me the raincheck for 2 units at $299. (I will keep the ad and try to get them to honor the bridge as well.)

All mine had black, but I wanted white. My wife got me a white Play 3 and Connect for Christmas, so I wanted to stick with the white, and return the white Play 3. For the same price, you can't go wrong!!

I got the last one in Jacksonville tonight, however our Orange Park store had an open box for $330; I imagine this is post-ad so perhaps it would be $230? *Shrugs* I only need 1 for now. The "fullness" difference between the Play 3 and Play 5 is a nice improvement; although I think after listening to both, the Play 3 is plenty for bedrooms, kitchens, and smaller spaces.

Sim-X 01-01-2013 06:16 PM

wow I got lucky I missed this post on Sunday I forgot to set a deal alert. I got my first sonos 5 from amazon a month ago with the $100 credit at which time I bought the bridge for $50 wish I would have waited. Saw this post ran to Best Buy tonight, as I got there there was an employee in home theater checking out with a play 5. I made a comment I'm like I'm guessing that's the last one. He's like sorry man. I'm like no worries it was a good deal. So they were sold out, guy at the store was cool looked up near by store. His computer showed 2, he called they said they had four. (they had 2 blacks, 2 whites) So he rung my up at the store I was at, paid for it there ran over to the other store they had my order ready at customer service along with 2 bridges. For those in MN Blaine has 2 white ones left (I got the 2 last black ones) So awesome deal glad I got in didn't have to take a rain check.

I also grabbed the print ad, might go try and pick a couple more up I don't think we will see them at this price again for a while. The bridges aren't really worth that much but figure I will sell them on eBay looks like they are going for like $30. Sonos is really expensive but it sure is cool, I just got done hooking up my new 2 plus my original makes me want more. Thanks op & repped (no I didn't call the store to see if they had any, they didn't anyway the guy at BB offered to check other stores & put them on hold for me at the other store)

I stopped at my local target tonight they didn't even have any play 5's at regular price no bridge. Might check some other targets plus then I can use my red card. Anyone have any luck price matching at target to BB and getting the zone player? I'm sure it's hit or miss luck of the draw who is working but it was actually a good experience at best buy didn't have to fight anyone for the promo obviously since it was advertised in there own ad.

And you never will. It's an Android only solution. iOS just doesn't allow that kind of flexibility. And from what I read, if they can't make it an easy seamless solution, it won't happen. I'll add that to my list of why I don't care for Apple.

Even if you had a rooted android device and could access the WPA key, but there's some other level of filtering beyond that, not allowing the connection.

wow I got lucky I missed this post on Sunday I forgot to set a deal alert.

Nice, I bet you were happy. I was thinking Target didn't price match? But maybe that's changed?

I looked up the Play 5 on their site and I saw they only carry black in stores. But surely they could order the white one for you, if they will price match that is.

Yea I did get lucky to find them especially since it was advertised since Sunday so I thought I missed it for sure, I guess I wasn't expecting them to go on sale anytime soon. I might try and get more but I haven't decided for sure yet. Even on sale they are still really expensive but the more you have the more enjoyable the system is. I think BB will order some for you if they are out but might try a price match before the sale is over. Will let you know how it goes if I decide to try.

Does anyone have a copy (PDF) of the print ad showing the price at $299 ?

Thanks in advance if you do, and post a link to it.

Update: I don't need the weekly ad, I just stopped at the BB in Cranberry Twp, PA and grabbed it. They had at least 6 white, no black. Hoping to get a raincheck on Friday, if a Black one doesn't come in by then.

mcdealio911 01-02-2013 10:51 AM

All of the stores around me were out of stock, but I was able to place an order for store pick up next week for 2 Play 5 units (1 black, 1 white) for the $299 deal with the free bridge.

The Play 5's still show up at $299 in their system including the bridge.

Rather than trying a raincheck and they fighting for the bridge later, you might want to try this approach if you still want this deal.

I did this at the Magnolia Home Theater department.

Thanks OP!

I bought a black 5 at Target and had them match the print ad from Best Buy. Wouldn't give me the free bridge but they matched the Play5 price.

Got a white Play:3 for Christmas. Luckily I hadn't opened it yet. I went up to the store in Independence, MO and grabbed a copy of the Sunday ad from the entrance area that showed the $299 price. They allowed me to return my Play:3 for a gift card, then buy a Play:5 with the free bridge for the same price. They had two of each color on the shelves that I saw, and the label on the shelf also said $299. I took a picture of the print ad and uploaded it to http://i.imgur.com/dwVqw.jpg if that helps anyone.

SKU No longer finds on BB website?

Can't find play:5 on 'sonos' search or entering specific SKU. Any thoughts on whether BB will no longer be carrying 5s going forward? Would explain breaching MSRP controls sonos seems to get enforced as there is minimal to no discounting on these other occasional GC which is a workaround.

I brought my open Play 3 that I got for Christmas in and just told the guy I wanted to trade it in for the bigger model. No problems at all. You can return open box items at Best Buy within 30 days, 45 at Christmas time.

Did you get an opened item from this store? I just picked up mine today and they both opened items and have missing parts. Very disappointed in BB.

Is this deal still valid? I was checking out the Play 5 in the Magnolia department today prior to seeing this thread, but the salesman didn't even mention that it was marked down even though he demoed it to me.

I might go get 2 more from target if they will price match. Don't really need the bridges and they don't seem to be worth much online. Will they let you use your red card for another 5% off after the price match? I guess if my local store would let me order for next week pickup I with the bridges I might as well try that. Hmmmm I'm to 3 players now, need more!

ScottC8920 01-03-2013 06:28 AM

The BB I went to (Metro Point in Costa Mesa, CA) said the ad was a misprint and they wouldn't honor it, but after a little arguing, they caved in. The Bridge was free. To keep people from getting this awesome deal, they removed it from their website. I bought a Play 5 three weeks ago as an open box and got it for 339 with a free Bridge. That's a pretty good deal too.

If you view their online ad, you'll notice the price has reverted back to 399.

Yes, I used the red card for my purchase/price match.

Picked up a black Play 5 at the North Ave., Chicago Best Buy yesterday for $299. Bridge included. The MHT salesman said they just received "a few" of both colors in, and had no problem with applying the $299 price to the black version.

equalme 01-03-2013 10:47 AM

Did you all have to bring in the ad or did you just mention the price and they know?

At the BB in the Pittsburgh Area I purchased the White 5, the price was labled $299 on the shelve.:) At checkout the cost of the Bridge was automatically deducted at the register.

Similar situation if you're in Manhattan or Brooklyn (NYC). They don't have them on the shelf but if you ask, apparently they have btw 2-5 units at the 5th Ave, 67th St, Union Square, and Atlantic Center locations. The Bridge is automatically deducted at checkout.

Got mine! Galleria in Houston, TX just got a truckload earlier today.

budt3kk 01-03-2013 05:01 PM

My bestbuy was out of the bridge so the took 50 off 299. So I got it for 249 + tax.

Yes, it is good thru January 5, 2013. I think if you go in there and if they are out ask them to order you one. I took a picture of the sale tag with the date if anyone want me to post it so you can use it for price matching or get your local BB to honor the deal.

Those still looking around there is some out there still. Most BB's are sold out of the Play 5's (I already picked up two on Tues) I ended up getting 2 more tonight so I'm in for 4 on this deal got bridges with each one prob just offload them on eBay. Sale ends tomorrow those still wanting one, I would stop into BB tomorrow see if they have any, if they don't they will check nearby stores for you. You can pay for it at your local BB and by the time u get to the other store they should have it ready. I did that with my two on tues and tonight. Tues pickup was flawless, tonight was a disaster. The kid rings me up for play 3's with no bridges after asking him multiple times if he included the bridge. I was in a hurry to make it to the other store before close so it's my fault for not checking the receipt. I got there they have 2 play 3's ready for me with no bridges. I'm like yea no. Lucky they had some play 5's (the kid checked he just rung it up wrong) So still had to deal with exchange but whatever it's done with and already have them hooked up.

Got a raincheck from my local Best Buy. A local store said it had 3 in stock, but when my store called them, they said they didn't have any available. Pretty annoying.

equalme 01-05-2013 05:16 PM

Love using my brand new Play 5! So convenient that it is completely wireless and does not require to be turned on and off. The app works wonderfully as well. I was excited when I saw that it had a sleep timer so I can fall asleep to the smooth music of Kenny G!
