I've got a pair of these I use for backpacking, and they are really solid. Love that they are convertible AND have the zippered pocket.

Not at all. These are really a good deal at this price. These aren't just some pair of pants for someone who's going out to shop at Costco.

iBoo 01-05-2013 05:14 PM

what are these pants for lol

They are for covering your body from the waist down to your ankles. I have the REI Sahara pants that are similar to this and they are excellent. The convertible part is great in warm weather, and they are very comfy. All the pockets are nice as well when you are hiking.

The REI ones have poor stitching on the back pockets though and always rips over time. I'm tempted to buy a pair of these.

what do you mean by not regular pants? the north face logo?

thank you very much. I don't need that brand to prove anything.

Nor do I. These are aimed at the outdoors/hiking. As such they are not just a 'regular' pair of pants. And as such, despite the logo you would like to avoid, are a very good pair of convertible pants.

How do these compare to the Columbia Silver Ridge Pants. [rei.com]

I got multiple pairs of the Silver Ridge pants before I went to climb Kili for $45 and love them. But if these are comparable, $38 would be a great price.

Thanks.

They are convertible pants so like a convertible car you can wear them with the top down or the top up. TD.

Try doing a ten mile hike in your jeans , you will know why there is a use for these pants.

I have both, and the Paramount pants I have are a significantly heavier material. They seem more durable, and block out the wind and cold more on cool days. The downside is they can get kind of hot in the summer. Just an FYI, mine are a few years old so they may have changed. Hope that helps!

They're really awesome for general travel too. Light weight, pack small, dry fast, and easy to wash in a hotel bathtub if necessary :) I also love the convertible option for those days where it's 50 in the morning, and 85 in the afternoon.

Truth is you'd probably buy 3-4 pairs of cheap convertible hiking pants at $20-30 a pair for every pair of these. I'm speaking from experience. I used to pick them up from an army surplus store, and after a summer of camping they were ready for the trash. Some stuff is just worth the extra money. If the tag bothers you it could probably be removed. Or maybe you could sew a wal-mart patch over the top of it.

Thinking about getting into hiking with friends. Looks like these would hit the spot. Any recommendations for shoes?

I got the Vasque Breeze GTX [vasque.com] and I really like them.

I got them on sale at REI, but I don't think they sell them any more as I only see the Vasque Breeze 2.0 at REI.com, which I can't even find on Vasque's own website. Also, I've heard good things about Merrell and Keen.

My main advice, though would be to try on whatever you plan on buying. Also, REI guys are a good resource on how comfortable the boots should feel.

depends on what kind of hiking you are planning on doing ;) hiking boots isn't a toothbrush - my best advice to you is to figure out where and what - ! - go to REI b&m - try a few pairs - tell 'em your plans (little things - like: taking a bus up the hill and coming down, etc.) would help - friendliest and knowledgeable folks ;) and 'll help you to make the right choice!

tspx23 01-06-2013 12:49 AM

haha i've picked up two pairs of convertible pants at dillards for 5$ and one that is probably the same material as this on clearance for 10$.
