This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

there has been many posts about connecting different sources, here is a short breakdown on how 99% of these htib work...

you can NOT hook up devices such as a Wii to the unit itself because most do not have a hdmi/component in.
but
you CAN use it for audio one of 3 ways...
ARC via HDMI if your tv has ARC
SPDIF (optical typically) from the tv > unit
RCA Composite RED & Wht inputs - analog

the main benefit (imo) of having a unit with multi/extra ins is that you can run 1 cable to the tv and be done with it
most of these htib however you still need to hook everything up directly to the tv and then the unit gets the audio signal from the tv instead of the wii/ps3/bluray directly

chucktang 01-06-2013 07:51 AM

seems like a good price

Right below the "product details" there is a link "tell us about a lower price". you can try going from there.

There is a good chance they will match the price anyways... It's just a hunch but several of the Best Buy deals I've posted and listed Amazon's price as a reference - they ended up matching it. Either later in the day or the next day.

I don't know if they monitor SD or not :dontknow: ...This is just a hunch and I wouldn't necessarily count on this happening.

I ordered it just incase from best buy, but rather get from amazon due to having so much credit from them and no tax and free shipping. If they match will just return best buy order.

Can everyone also please submit this price to Amazon. THANKS

vnw98 01-06-2013 08:42 AM

SWEET amazon Price matched already. I cancelled bestbuy and bought from amazon. Free shipping no tax.

cluedweasel 01-06-2013 08:52 AM

Darn. Got $80 of Best Buy credit, but this only has one HDMI port. I need something I can hook up at least 3 pieces of kit to. Have a feeling I need a receiver and speaker set.

Jedis 01-06-2013 08:54 AM

Does anyone know how many things can be connected to this?

Are there enough inputs to plug my TV, 360, and Wii into this to get the sound to come out of the surround sound speakers?

It looks like this would replace my existing bluray player too, correct?

tech 0, it has 1 out
Most likely you need a receiver package
Most of these htib units do not support anything other then what's built in
See below on how you can use it for sound still but need to run multi cables to the tv itself

If you have your 360 and wii hooked to your tv
Then you run an optical Cable from the tv out to this unit and based on what source you have selected hear audio from that source
But you can not hook everything up to this unit and run 1 cable to the tv

cooidude0 01-06-2013 09:08 AM

Meritline and a few other sites sell a source-sensing 3 to 1 HDMI switch for $15-$20. I actually prefer those as they sense which port is active and automatically switch, or you can just press a button or use the wireless remote.

mdsniper7 01-06-2013 09:22 AM

damn if it had wireless rears I would bite but I hate running cables.

Yeah, as long as your TV has hdmi or digital audio out (optional, depends how you hook this up), you should be fine.

I have this hooked up to my Samsung no issues just make sure you use a good HDMI cable (I used a cheaper one and got a snowy pic) and have a optical audio cable to hook your TV to the unit. You should be able to hook your Wii as well depends how you hook it up to your TV and if your TV has enough inputs

Here is my setup: Samsung TV, Xbox 360 and this unit. Using Harmony 610 remote
I have HDMI from the Bluray unit and Xbox hooked to the TV I also have an Optical audio cable from the TV to Bluray unit I get sursound no matter what source I use. took a little playing around as the instructions are not the greatest.

ngrshth 01-06-2013 10:19 AM

I'll take Best Buy's 4 year $35 full geek squad warranty on this product over tax free Amazon any day. Amazon's Square Trade warranty is the worst (shipping/time, customer service, an almost guaranteed canceling of a multiple year warranty after your first claim).

adas 01-06-2013 10:22 AM

Bought it, but speakers are probably junk... So why did I buy it? FP SD effect! ??

NM 156 01-06-2013 10:24 AM

Nice... If you can swap out the sub this is awesome...

Lukkie 01-06-2013 10:25 AM

Just bought one, figured for $200 can't go wrong. I need some help setting it up due to the lack of HDMI inputs so here is what I am thinking:

TV, XBox360, BLURAY (the thing that comes in the HTIB package)

BLURAY HDMI out to TV

XBOX360 HDMI out to TV, optical to BLURAY

TV Digital coaxial out to BLURAY

Does this sound like it would work and get HDMI picture/surround sound from all?

lllGurulll 01-06-2013 10:31 AM

Gregory 01-06-2013 10:38 AM

I really want to hear one of these home theater in a box systems. I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard one. Obviously they wouldn't sound as good as my higher end system but I'm curious to hear one to evaluate the cost to benefit ratio of these compared to higher end systems.

Medic311 01-06-2013 10:39 AM

for $200, this will blow you away while watching movies or playing Xbox etc. expect the quality of any other HTIB, whether it's samsung or panassonic. if you are a hardcore audiophile then HTIB is not the way to go - just get a receiver and buy the speakers separately.

i have a samsung one, which had built-in wifi and for another $49 i could purchase the wireless rear receiver for the speakers. not sure about the panassonic one

i have a samsung one. it was perfect for my 900 sq ft apartment a few years ago

in my family room in my house now, it's still decent but there would be a significant benefit for having more powerful speakers

for $200, you will be blown away

Someone needs to make one of these with ARC, it would eliminate the lack if inputs.

No. This system is designed to download content from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. It cannot be used for general web surfing. But this is true for (almost?) all current media playback systems including the Smart TV and Roku.

What you want is an HTPC; PC capable of playing back HD media. They will be much more expensive, since you will need a separate Blu-ray drive and a playback software (~$100) and amplifier + speakers.

I looked through the specs but didn't see it...

NM found it, if your tv supports it and you have HDMI 1.3 cables you are good to go. From the panny website:

How do I use the ARC feature with this system?

"ARC" is an abbreviation for Audio Return Channel. To use this feature the HDMI cable you are using must be compliant to HDMI v1.3 spec or later. Older cables may not work correctly. VIERA Link can work with either the HDMI-ARC feature of a compatible TV. For ARC usage make sure that the systems HDMI ARC port is connected to the TVs ARC port. 1. Press [HOME]. 2. Select "Others" icon and press [OK]. 3. Select "Setup" and press [OK]. 4. Select "Audio" and press [OK]. 5. Select "TV Audio Input" and press [OK]. Then select the "ARC" option. Afterwards the TV's ARC feature will control the home theater system and the sound from the TV will be heard through the systems speakers

68droptop 01-06-2013 01:21 PM

Dead...

I bought one through Amazon before the price jumped $90 and will decide weather it will work for my application or not.

What I really am looking for is a simple, portable speaker driver and/or speakers to use outside for a back yard theater. Best case would be a system that can pull audio wirelessly from a remote location and drive the wired speakers. I do not want to go wireless for the speakers as than I need to run power to various locations or keep a shitton of batteries around. Neither is optimal.

Video will be separately sent to the Epson 8350 projector.

These are a waste if you have other A/V equipment. Just get a decent receiver and go from there. So many people buy these bundles not knowing they are very limited in what they do.

If you have other A/V equipment, then you already have a receiver. ;)

Buying a receiver is also a waste if you buy one of these. Personally, I'd rather not have another box in my system that just acts as an amplifier, since I'm no longer attaching multiple devices.

One box that can play disks, USB, DLNA, and streaming that can also be controlled by a smart phone doesn't seem very limited at all.

It looks to have a USB jack, but not a "dock" per se. You can plug one in.

Looks like with one HDMI, not very easily.

vzafer 01-06-2013 01:59 PM

I'm about to pull the trigger on this one but still just a bit confused withy the multiple devices connection issue.

So if I don't care about connecting all of my devices to the bluray player...i.e, if I plug my ps3 and cable box straight to my tv's hdmi ports, and then connect the bluray player (receiver) to the tv via optical cable (which I am assuming it comes with it???? Right??), wouldn't I be able to get audio for all of my devices???? I know I'll be running 2 or 3 hdmi cables through my tv butI really don't care about that...am I missing anything?

Ps: some reviews on amazon mention that it comes with really short wires and it seems like there is a bit of concern regarding the type of wiring...anyone has any insights on that one?

Absolutely wrong. Modern TV's have these things called inputs, such as HDMI, composite and component. You can hook your game systems, dish receivers, dvd players and such directly to the TV. A receiver isn't needed to play these, bud. :D

sedakill 01-06-2013 02:10 PM

Anyone know how this compares to the htb-550? All of the stores around me don't have this in stock and there isn't on display. I have a HTB-550 sound bar that I recently purchased for $260 and this looks like it might be a better deal if the quality of the drivers is the same.

Yes, you should be able to run optical FROM your TV TO the receiver, and then have it act as your speakers and the TV as the switch. You'll probably have to buy the optical cable...they are cheap.

Most wires are too short for some people, and too long for others. ;) Don't let that affect your decision.

I'd most like to know which formats it plays through DLNA so I can get rid of a networked media player. Most are pretty limited, and you can't trust them to play all the same files through DLNA as they will through USB.

maxgtr2000 01-06-2013 02:14 PM

These htib setups are limited, research should be done in depth before purchase. If you have multiple hdmi sources these htibs may not work most have only 1 out. If you have multiple sources you can use a tv with ARC or use optical outs for the sound. These setups are for people who do not want to deal with multiple components and or don't have alot of living space (perfect for apartments). Don't expect super hifi quality sound but they can sound decent compared to systems that cost many times over. Also not everyone is an audiophile so.... I was in the market for one of these and this price is pretty low, I eventually went with a Sony BDV-F7 setup tho.

Yeah, cables are a major pain. That's why I went in-wall during my last remodel. ;)

I just upgrade my HTIB unit when I find a more modern unit that has the same 3-4 ohm impedence. The speakers end up staying in the box until I upgrade, and pass it on to someone else.

I've never found any "good" wireless solutions, but I never researched much. But considering you still need power, and AC wires can be more intrusive than speaker wires, maybe just grit your teeth and run some cable.

Sorry I can't be much help.

I like the floor standing speakers but don't need the rest of the system. Anyone know where to purchase speakers like that at a reasonable price?

Floydfanatic00 01-06-2013 08:14 PM

I'm looking for floor standing speakers just like this for surround speakers but don't need the other speakers or blu ray player. Anyone know where to find speakers like this at a reasonable price?

You could just get a cheap Linksys WRT54G wireless router, load Tomato or DDWRT firmware on it, configure it as a wireless ethernet bridge, and plug in an ethernet cable.

This route only costs about $25 if you get a used one from eBay. I have three that I use around the house for devices that only support ethernet.

zmclive523 01-06-2013 08:41 PM

in for one. thanks.

Nice, Thanks for reminding me about wireless bridging. I am going to look for compatible routers now.

Any good deal on a system with wireless rear speakers?

QUESTDestiny 01-06-2013 09:35 PM

$199 is correct price for this as it lacks WIFI builtin and rear speakers are not wireless, the tall speakers are just fancy and not that of great sound.

Darn. Got $80 of Best Buy credit, but this only has one HDMI port. I need something I can hook up at least 3 pieces of kit to. Have a feeling I need a receiver and speaker set.

Not sure if you'd not like this as a workaround, but you can always get one of these badboys:

The LG and Sony setups have wireless rears but be prepared to spend over $300. Rocketfish makes a wireless rear device.

I don't know if they monitor SD or not :dontknow: ...This is just a hunch and I wouldn't necessarily count on this happening.

ok so where is the product details at? where is it on best buy or amazon?

On Amazon, scroll ALL the way down, find the blue box that says 'Feedback', and look for the blue worded link 'tell us about a lower price'.

The speakers in units like this are not really that nice, you can pick up any standalone 3.5 - 5" type of speaker and it will sound just as good or better. Most of these inexpensive HTIB kits use tiny 2 or 3" drivers, full range in some cases.

You could get a tiny kit like this:

http://www.monoprice.com/products...1&format=2

Plus some trendy looking stands if you want something that looks decent... and end up with better sound quality.

I'm not naysaying this deal because at $200 I think it is a very good deal for this exact solution. Going separates (AVR+blu-ray+speaker system) is going to cost you quite a bit more. But you will also get much better flexibility.

Samsung also has systems with wireless rear speaker . I love mine. It sounds great and it automatically syncs with my Samsung TV.

This isn't a bad option I suppose - http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-S...=SC-BTT190

I have a similar Panasonic SC-PT760 6 disc dvd/theater

[Has wireless rear speakers..GREAT SOUND!!! Only thing, with mine the cd changer crapped out on me and they discontinued that model...gotta look to see if I can find this Blu Ray/Theater receiver by itself

thcbeefcake 01-07-2013 04:48 PM

Just got this home and hooked up from Best Buy (Had $100 gift card). Connected HDMI from receiver to ARC HDMI port on my Vizio TV. I have my cable box and Xbox hooked to the TV via HDMI. Had to change a couple settings on the TV to get it to work but all in all set up went pretty easy. Pretty good deal for $200 considering it had a Blu Ray player and I didn't have one yet. I couldn't see my self paying $399 for it though, at that point buying separate components would be more tempting. Definitely better than a sound bar for the same price.

isguhnrain 01-07-2013 05:05 PM

How does the sound quality of this compare to a sound bar? Im looking to buy a cheap blu-ray and decent sound bar for about $200 total. Would I be better off buying something like this? I just need a sound bar or system like this to use for sound on my tv and blu-ray player and that would be it.

So in general, would a decent sound bar sound better than something like this or would this be a better deal? Thanks

Have you tried DLNA? Can you tell me what formats it plays? Thanks.

gringoz10 01-08-2013 05:57 AM

Does it decode tv 5.1 to 5.1 via optical?

johnnyma45 01-08-2013 07:16 AM

Hooked this up yesterday, pretty decent sound, TV 5.1 optical in worked well. One note, it is more limited than an LG player I had as far as playing digital media off USB, ie cannot play .avi or .flv, which my LG BP325 played well.

has nothing to do with the times, it's just the product itself. home theater in a box kits like this were never meant to act as a receiver for other inputs.

Honestly I haven't tried using DLNA on it, and I haven't even used the Blu-Ray player either. I use my Vizio TV for DLNA and netflix and so on along with the 360. Just haven't had time to go through all the bells and whistles. Pretty much just set it up, streamed Dark Knight Rises for a little and played some music through it.

True. But it's nice that since you rarely need them to switch video, (if) you can use the TV to do that and feed the audio back to the unit optically and simplify things a lot.

Once I figured that out, my setup got a lot easier to use. It's somewhat backward logically to feed audio to the TV then back to the HTIB, but works great.

You can even use an auto HDMI switch if your TV doesn't have multiple HDMI, or you don't want to hassle with switching them. Good for setting up your parent's A/V system. ;)

Ugh...why can't they standardize? I think my TV's want to ignore AVI's, but my mobile media players ONLY want to play AVI's. And both are common on the internet.

Guess I'll have to keep my PBO since it seems to be the only device that will play anything I throw at it.

Does anyone know if its possible to hook up a wireless usb dongle to the front of the unit and sync via bluetooth to play music wirelessly from iphone? Thanks!

Jedis 01-26-2013 07:39 PM

Got mine a few days ago.

Has anyone figured out how to display Netflix video info when watching Netflix? The Status button doesn't do anything...
