good shelves besides the thin cheap particle board they provide.

Last time I bought them for my shop, I painted the boards with leftover paint that I had and it made a huge difference in keeping them clean and sealed from moisture.

Seems like a good deal

ujica 01-09-2013 08:35 AM

bought one, I have used 3/4 leftover plywood in the past to replace the shelves when they start sagging, might try to paint these.

iluvmysh 01-09-2013 08:37 AM

i bought mine from costco, came with better shelves than the ace. i forgot how much i paid though $40? $50?

RugerRedhawk 01-09-2013 08:49 AM

Pretty decent if putting in a dry location, would not be suited for my basement unfortunately.

sunspotzsz 01-09-2013 08:50 AM

I bought 4 of these last time, and they are very good!

You can use many things to control the moisture. A few coats of polyurethane would be even more durable of a finish. Any finish is acting as a sealer to keep out the moisture, so you may have some left over finish on a garage shelf you could use too.

How do these compare to the the HDX shelves from HD [homedepot.com]?

I have them both. The Home Depot HDX shelves are great for use inside the home. The gorilla rack is much taller and nicer looking but that may be my personal preference. If I had to choose one I'd buy the $20 HDX racks because of the price.

I believe the one mentioned here is made of steel? The one you linked to says it's plastic, so that might matter to some.

neehon 01-09-2013 09:06 AM

Wanted to post this myself, forgot :-). These are part of Ace Hardware's "Red Hot January Buys", and they do go on sale once in a while. I bought four of these about five years ago (same price), and am getting two more this time around. I did paint particleboard shelves, they didn't really sag (shelf is not deep), but they do attract moisture and resulting mold.

Main advantage of these shelves, in my mind, is superior fit, and shallow depth. They assemble like a charm, compared to others I bought from HD. And shallow depth really help when storing small stuff, like tools and batteries, so you don't have to dig through piles of stuff reaching for something at the farther end.

joe_sun 01-09-2013 09:09 AM

In my garage I currently have 4 of these gorilla racks, the Edsal units from Lowes that are $50.00ish on sale, and the $60.00 heavy duty unit from Costco.

I will never buy anything besides the Heavy Duty unit from Costco;. It's currently holding a crazy amount of weight and it’s solid as a rock.

The Lowes are the second best units

and these are by far the worst in quality. They are pretty flexy and as other state the wood that comes with them is pretty thin.

That being said if you just need some racks to hold some not so heavy things, these will work fine just be aware they are not very deep at all.

Do you mean you bought one, and expected the image you posted, but it wasn't the image?

I am on the fence about buying one specifically to use as a work bench, but there is very little information on the web about how it looks/functions as a work bench.

There is a long dialoge about the HDX at the link below. The HDX are: Plastic, light, easy to assemple, better for outdoor use, not adjsutable, not as big, not as strong, cheaper.
I have some of both type am pleased with both. The gorellas look simular to the Edsel brand that HD used to sell.

shortysno2 01-09-2013 10:21 AM

Just bought two of these. Put them together this morning and I can tell you they are great and sturdy. I also have the Costco 5 shelf unit in my garage (All in my dry garage) For the price, they are a steal! I would recommend them or two! Seems like there are others here discussing "other" shelving products and not responding to the one listed.

Thanks for posting, Repped

I don't have one (yet), but I was curious how it would turn into a workbench with only 5 shelves (was expecting it to make use of an even number of shelves). Found the image on google, posted to help those after me :)

According to the instructions the workbench will setup like set 8 in the pdf link. I ordered three and plan on putting two tall shelves on either side of the workbench. I also measured my current workbench and it's also 36" tall which these should be when assembled as pictured.

If anyone as a different setup I would love to see it...

I've had 4 of these for a decade holding tools and supplies. Never had a leak or got the shelves wet, never painted them, seem to be fine.

Bought these last time. They ARE VERY HARD to put together. I had to use lots of WD40 to get the parts to slide together.

Costco has an awesome deal on their super heavy duty shelves right now. These shelves can hold, literally, tons!! $135+tax Every once in a while, Costco has a sale on their smaller equivalent shelves. http://www.whalenstorage.com/cate...ial%20Rack

Is this shelf at the Costco b&m or online?

thumper300zx 01-09-2013 11:26 AM

I bought several HD units like 10 years ago -- they used to be made better, and came with thicker particle board. They are 48" wide and 24" deep.

A couple years later, I had to buy a couple more, and they used thinner EVERYTHING (sheet metal and particle board) and the brackets are not designed as well (the wood sets into the bracket instead of resting on top, which is a pain with thin wood since the sharp top edge of the bracket can grab and gouge anything soft like corrugate).

I would think for 36" wide x 14" deep, the board provided on these would be fine (not awesome, but fine). And it looks like the brackets are built better. Looks like a pretty solid deal to me.

To me, I wouldn't get plastic or wire type shelving -- only this kind or better.

markymags 01-09-2013 11:54 AM

Thanks, Op! I just bought 2!

Just an FYI for those who do not know - Discover gives an extra 5% cashback for Ace Hardware through ShopDiscover on their website.

Ion Control 01-09-2013 11:56 AM

Reviews on Amazon of Gorilla Racks with the same dimensions (but different part numbers) hammer these as being flimsy. Not sure if I should pull the trigger or not. At this price, might b easier to just buy shelving brackets and some decent plywood and build my own.

They aren't intended to easily slide together, which is what makes them so sturdy. It's snug, but they fit well. Use a rubber mallet as the directions call for.

I have the Edsal and the Gorilla and prefer the Gorilla. The Edsals assemble by locking the tabs of the shelves into notches on the posts, but the tabs bend easily and don't always fit into the hole like they should (at least in my experience). That leaves shelves that are either uneven, not level or may not hold the full capacity that's intended. The Gorilla rack uses circular heads that fit into slots on the posts - they're much sturdier and don't bend at all. Both have a plywood shelf which will warp a little with weight and can stain if you spill something on them, but they're easily replaced. I recently moved and found the Gorilla racks easy to disassemble and reassemble (like they were brand new), where the Edsal's were tough to get back together since the tabs were bent...

The HDX shelves are all plastic and much easier to assemble. They can't hold as much weight as the metal Gorilla shelves though. Also the HDX are 36 inches wide vs the Gorilla shelves' 34 inches which could be a factor if your space is tight. I have a small utility closet on my patio which is 35 inches wide where I want a shelf so my only option between the two is the Gorilla (or build a custom setup).

I will see if I have something I can use, I don't mind using plywood if I have some left over, don't have to think about placing heavy items on the shelf or getting the shelves wet.

I bought one specifically to use as a work bench. I was going to build one myself originally but this is a decent price, and it looks like you can make maybe 2 work benches even. Doesn't look like there's a backboard though

jaqnabox 01-09-2013 01:50 PM

I have both this one (4 of them) and the costco one. They each have their purposes.

Ace - 32-35$ each, Would not use for work bench, great for shoes, small boxes, toys, books

Costco - 65-125$, would use for work bench, would place heavy tools, canned foods, lots of weight (About the same height and width. Costco twice the depth)

Buy whatever fits your garage.

Thanks for the link. That is pretty much what I was expecting. I've never seen a 5 shelf unit turn into an actual work bench. They usually show the unit assembled in 2 separate pieces - 1 3-shelf unit and another 2 shelf unit with no bottom shelf. Having no bottom shelf can be convenient for storing wheeled items that you don't always need out in the open like an air compressor, shop-vac, or floor jacks.

yangjay 01-09-2013 02:01 PM

I bought 4 last time and they are perfect for my garage. Once assembled it is very sturdy and the depth is perfect because it doesn't occupy too much space.

mkb707 01-09-2013 02:40 PM

I bought 3 of these a while ago for $30 the metal is flimsy but once assembled they are surprisingly sturdy. The shelves are also supported on all 4 sides which helps a lot. You will definitely need a rubber mallet to put them together and I assembled them myself but having an extra set of hands to hold things in place would have saved me a lot of time.

shane.kelly55 01-09-2013 02:52 PM

Good price but i got these for 26.99 2 years ago from Ace.

Great shelves too but you may have to buy a sheet of decent plywood. The Particle board is average at best.

I have the black HDX shelves, but not the Gorilla. They are not going to hold the weight that the Gorilla rack will hold, but they are still surprisingly good. Keep in mind that the HDX shelves are shorter... but you are not limited to the height shown in the pic if you have more shelves. So you can, say, buy 4 shelving units at $20/ea and make 3 72" tall units for about $27 ea. Or you can move up a notch in the HDX range and get the ones that are a cream color with the black plastic ends for $35/ea which are already 72" without any mixing and matching (I have these shelves, too).

Both the HDX shelves are 36" wide and 18" deep, which means that they have more spacious shelves (and a larger footprint) than these Gorillas. And FYI the weight rating for the black HDX is 125/shelf and the cream one is 150/shelf. If you don't need the higher weight rating of the Gorillas (or similar) you'd probably be very happy with the HDX ones. And as a bonus the fully-assembled HDX shelves are easily moved by one person once assembled, even from room to room if you like.

Eh, I live in Alaska. Companies try to charge up the butt for shipping every chance they get. I once had to replace a small part (weighed about 4 ounces) for a vacuum I bought at sears. The part was 6.95 and they wanted to charge 24 dollars shipping and even the manager wouldn't waive a single cent off.

Agreed, rubber mallet is key to assembling these shelves. I have four of the Lowes Edsal shelves, first was a nightmare to put together. Then started using a rubber mallet and the assembly flew for the rest.

BigSky62 01-09-2013 06:13 PM

Might I suggest just going to your local Ace Hardware and buying it right off the shelf. This is a Red Hot Buy for the month and should be fully stocked. You would have to go there to pick it up anyway if you ordered it online. As for the $5 off $25 coupon - that is good on regular priced merchandise only. While you are there (and if you are an Ace Rewards Member) be sure to pick up the Peak windsheild washer fluid for $.99. As of January 1st, Ace Reward members will now receive instant savings at the register, no more mail in rebates.

This, seriously, you need to seal these things or even the slightly moist basement will have these shelves curving in under a month.

Lesson learned the hard way.

antennahead 01-09-2013 08:26 PM

I've put together several of these shelves over the years- dead blow hammers work well too if you have one. Either rubber mallet or dead blow will greatly speed assembly. I prefer the dead blow myself.

Also, we are fortunate enough to have a county wide household hazardous waste facility near by. When people bring in paints/stains/etc... any materials that can still be used, they put them out for residents to take free of charge. Very good way to get sealants, paints, etc... for sealing up particle board. Not sure what the rest of the country does with their hazardous waste (I'm near Boulder, CO).

Another good resource is a recycled building materials center- a few blocks from the above waste dump is "Resource" when you can donate used building materials. Great way to get plywood etc, real cheap that you can then cut into shelves for these racks. Don't forget to paint them with the free stuff from the waste dump...

If you're going to improve the shelf, another cheap and worthwhile improvement is to use some angle iron or other reinforcement on the bottom side of the shelf to improve the load capacity. Usually you can find some angle iron (or even shelf standards) that have pre-drilled holes that you can use self-tapping sheet metals screws to go into the plywood/particle board. Easy with a drill driver.

These racks are quite sturdy once assembled- the particle board is utter crap and I usually throw it away and not even use it.... even "Resource" won't take it.

Agree with this 100% ... the COSTCO shelves are fricking indestructible -- i had two of these from ACE and although the were "OK" they just were flimsy sort of...

MrLateNite 01-10-2013 08:22 AM

This is NOT gorilla rack. This may be branded "Gorilla rack" but it wouldn't hold more than a few monkeys on a shelf, let alone a gorilla!

These are the same as the $35 ones at Lowes, Home Depot and Menards when they go on sale.

It has 1/2" particle board that bends and cracks easily, the uprights are two separate segments of L brackets that must be joined by a shelf where they meet. The shelves are held by tiny rivets.

Real gorilla rack holds 2000 pounds (10x) as much per shelf, and the shelves can span 8' x 30" and made from 12 gauge, not 20 gauge steel; like these: http://menards.com/main/project-c...c-9926.htm

Costco had one a while back that look something similar but 16" wider and 3": deeper for $3 more.

Personmans 01-10-2013 12:50 PM

Picked up one of these a while back and the sheet steel is VERY thin for a storage rack. I'm using it for the lighter stuff in my garage, but won't be buying more.

Lowe's has these:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_71034-807...94936608__
Which are significantly larger and MUCH more sturdy. If you can get them on sale with a 10% off (got mine for $54 each) they are well worth the cost over the gorilla racks.

I have a bunch of rubbermaid tubs that I would like to organize the garage and shelves with. .. I was leaning towards the HDX shelves. However cannot adjust shelf height on hdx right?

Price is nice but 12" deep and 30" across is kind of small. Also the 80 lb weight limit makes me think the steel is paper thin. I do not own them myself but the specs above keep me away.

No it can not. I picked mine up a couple days ago. The picture of the work bench on the front is an L shaped work bench that doesn't have a back board. It does have a couple shelves underneath.

I'm still ok with that though. A simple workbench leaves room for mods.

Are these the "Heavy Duty" ones from Costco? http://www.costco.com/Alera-Indus...17600.html

This is a link for the Costco ones.

http://www2.costco.com/Browse/Pro...allpartial
They have it in the regular Costcos for around $60. I compared both and the Costco ones are much stronger and sturdy than the Gorilla ones mentioned. I bought 3.

I agree sometime the boards are just engineered wood saw which comes off easily.
If I paint them with stain will it work? what kind of paint I should use, I thought of this idea but never materialize, I guess I would get something in gray color to match with frame.

I think they're extending the life of the shelf by preventing moisture penetration with a coating of paint. Stain won't prevent moister from getting in.

Maybe varnish instead or some sort of clear coat I'm not familiar with?

+1 to the shelves from Costco.

To say I am positively surprised by the quality of those shelves is a severe understatement. Like many other Costco products, they are of supreme quality and can withstand an unbeliavable amount of weight. I bought them with a $20 off coupon so each shelf was $45, but even at $65 it's a no-brainer.

And if you REALLY need to handle a lot of weight then Costco heavy duty shelves is $149 and each shelf is rated for 500lbs .

Yeah, not a typo. 500lbs.

anusornsan 02-12-2013 01:52 PM

Sweet. I got one to use as a workbench. Hope it works well!!

xoroniox 02-12-2013 02:26 PM

The gorilla shelf system is ok - I like the quality and size / I like how easy it is to build but I HATE the shelves are not black .... beige cardboard color =\

Other shelving system sold @ Home depot for $60 have black shelves, much nicer.

dctazz 02-12-2013 02:36 PM

Should have called then Chimp Shelf's.
Definitely not a Gorilla. The cross bar supports are made of sheet metal, and bend very easily when weight is added. I had to drill and screw extra sections of wood from the front to the rear cross bar to keep the shelf's from bending the supports.

dngrcnnn 02-12-2013 02:55 PM

How often do deals for something like this come up? I'm downsizing to a studio apt next month, so I'm going to need some sort of rack system to put in a corner and store some food and my ungodly amount of awesome kitchen toys(all purchased courtesy of slickdeals over the years).

Cheaper is better since it won't need to hold more than 50-60lbs per shelf. And adjustable heights is even better since pasta doesn't take up near as much vertical space as a stand mixer.

Do I pull the trigger on this now, or can I afford to wait a month and pick something up from HD without too much issue? These SEEM to hit all the criteria for my shelving system, as most shelves in this price range aren't adjustable.

probably for the same reason every single last thing newegg sells shows up on sd, and there's currently another fp 'deal' for a 12 pack of soap - this site isn't for your benefit or mine, it's purpose is to make money for the owners, who just can't resist those sweet clickthrough and referral $$$.

This deal's been around for months, it's not even that big of a discount off regular price, so no worries about missing it - it will either still be around, or something very similar by the time you actually need it. Don't let it's appearance on the front page here on slickdeals fool you into thinking it's anything special, it's really not, but slickdeals has obviously moved away from being a community driven site for finding deals to being merely a conduit for the site's owners to funnel people through their referral links for clickthrough payments from fp featured vendors.

If this sounds jerky or cynical, ask yourself (if you've been a frequent user of this site more than 2 years) - would a $5.95 cupcake stand or $3.35 pack of bar soap EVER have been featured as a front page deal on sd until maybe the past few months?

Not recommended really, if you want to use it as the tall setup. Bought 2 and set them up as 5 shelf setups, and opted to convert them into three 3-shelf setups, after 1 got tipped over.

I positioned one on each side of the door that goes into the house from the garage, flat against the wall, with about 1.5 feet of space from the door jam, to allow clearance for the light switch and garage door openers, for symmetry, and a place to put shoes or whatever too. My old man managed to tip one over when he was over helping with the new home. He didn't say how he knocked it over, but he was mad at it, saying they were too close to the door and that they were weak. It only had a bunch of groceries and canned foods on it. I jumped on the one 3-shelf setup I made from the salvaged parts and hopped up and down on the top (3rd) shelf and found it held up well, but wasn't that confident in it. From that, I simply assumed the rack took an excessive lateral load/hit, causing the frame to twist, unsettling the load, and causing the rack to fall, instead of collapse on itself.

The.Dude 02-13-2013 12:13 PM

Out of stock for me, but went to the store, and they special ordered it for me at this price. I already have a few of these in use, and while I wouldn't use them to store bodies, they do the job. I actually lined my entire wall with 3' sections in my shop, really useful.

1wired1 02-13-2013 01:27 PM

Got four of these last time from Lowes. I had to open two to find enough unbent parts to put one together. I think I have about 10 parts. I haven't opened the other two boxes yet. I wouldn't buy these again.

Okay, I bought this as a perfectly cheap treadmill desk.

I was looking at the $40 SurfShelf [amazon.com] treadmill desk since I was impressed by the video [youtube.com]. Still I wasn't willing to spend $40 for something with limited space and can risk vibrating my electronics to death.

My question is, what is the width of the vertical metal support? Our treadmill is 26" across so I'm guessing this 34"W shelf will do?

Also, for anyone interested, Walmart dropped their prices a bit on the Ameriwood bookshelves [walmart.com]. I got the 5-Shelf Bookcase for $31 free ship to store. It's normally $35 so not much of a deal, but this is still a bit cheaper than last year's prices.

jhpope 02-18-2013 06:32 AM

Have these shipped for anyone? Order status is just showing located in stock since the 12th.

mine were just 3/8" particle board which is absolutely terrible around moisture. It swells and gets brittle when wet. My color is an ugly ochre color that I picked up somewhere as a mis-mixed gallon at Lowes or HD for $5. The shelves are covered with junk so color isn't an issue.

Your main goal is to get good coverage and keep water from soaking in so any paint will be better than no paint. Stain won't do much to help unless it's a one-step kind of product with a sealer in it. Your best bet is a paint made for waterproofing, but mine is just a basic latex. Gave it two quick coats and seems to have done the job...been couple of years now and no noticeable problems. Look around and see what you already have. If you have leftover deck sealer or polyurethane from another project then they might work, too.
