Coast HP550 1000 lumen flashlight 29.97 @ Costco YMMV

Hi Everyone, this is my first time posting so I apologize in advance for any mistakes.

I just bought the Coast HP550 flashlight at my local Costco (Chicago West Loop) for $29.97. I've been on the fence when the price was $50 but it looks like they just dropped it. I couldn't resist.

Seems like a good deal to me. 1000 lumens and uses 9 AAs. I personally prefer AAs as I have a ton of eneloops sitting around from prior deals. Light is very bright (as in light up the house bright) and the packaging notes that it should be good for 2 hrs 15 min at the highest setting.

I'm not sure if this is available everywhere but I wanted to let people know. The item number is 686885.

The people at this flashlight forum (had no idea flashlight forums existed before today) had a lot of good things to say:

I went to my local costco because this item does not exist online at a reasonable price. I am not a Costco member.
Talked to the customer services desk, gave her the item number and she said they have ONE LEFT IN STOCK. I said Horray! it was destiny!, what do i have to do? pay a surcharge or something?

she said "i cant let you buy it without a membership but lets get one started for you! ($55+ yr). and BTW the non-member sucharge is for BJs Club."

i said how about i just give it to a real member standing in line and pay them cash. She said costco has strict policies about doing that. "sorry have a nice day"
i left pissed. feeling empty, a hollowed man...

so im standing there trying to give them my hard earned cash and they treat me like i'm an alien visitor from uranus or something.

SCREW COSTCO!

As we say in the tennis biz: "Sometime zee ball go IN...sometime zee ball go OUT". I wonder if they'll miss you. On the other hand, you could glue together three of the Meritline cheapies that come around from time to time.:D

They may have another box on the shelf. Be sure to call and have them check the item number! Cal expo and other nearby stores usually have the items south sac is out of...

brimorga 01-15-2013 12:23 PM

So youre upset that they wouldn't let you bypass their membership in order to buy something that is only for members??

Do you get upset when you go to a restaurant and have to pay $20 for a meal that cost them $10 to make, or get upset that you have to pay for a ticket to get in a movie when there are empty seats and thus they should let you in free??

I fully understand paying for restaurant service or a movie expierence. But Costco should atleast provide a surcharge fee or SOMETHING for non-members who want to buy a single item without the annual membership.

I was just mentally prepared to be playing with 1000 lumens of fury all night long and was destroyed when Costco denied me of that joy.

sick97ss 01-17-2013 12:23 PM

...who wants to mail one to me for $40?!?!

novemberr 01-17-2013 12:45 PM

Two nearby costco stores have different price ($10 difference). Will costco do price match with another costco store?

They USED TO add 10% if you were not a member. I wonder when that changed.

If you know someone locally with a Costco membership, he or she can purchase you a costco cash card. With the cash card, you can go into and purchase anything at Costco without being a member and no surcharges

http://www.costco.com/Costco-Cash...reId=10301
Excerpt from Costco's website:
The Costco Cash card
You must be a Costco member to purchase or reload Costco Cash Cards. Members and non-members may use the cash cards to shop at any Costco location in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and online at Costco.com or on Costco.ca. Costco Cash balances may be used toward membership or merchandise.
Can be purchased in denominations from $25 to $1,000
No expiration date

tcpoob 01-18-2013 09:15 PM

That's because there is no surcharge when using a Costco Cash card.

Lets not forget the membership is 100% refundable if you are "unsatisfied" for any reason...any time within the year. It is not pro-rated either.

Get membership. Buy item. Be unsatisfied. Get refund.

Or you can go with gift card approach. Or I am sure if you ask someone in the store they will buy for you...

Just saying...being pissed at a membership only club requiring a membership is well...

Costco is AWESOME! That being said, you can get a refund on membership at any time during the year. Buy a membership, buy the flashlight, then stop off at the membership desk on the way out to cancel your membership and get a full refund (on the membership).

BTW - $39.97 in Danvers, MA

sleepybubba 01-28-2013 10:21 AM

I am curious if the price for these dropped any further? Both Avon and Dedham Costco have been completely wiped out, so something tells me it did.

No, that price was checked minutes before posting. If it dropped, it dropped since then.

DarkAmeba 01-29-2013 06:06 AM

Crap. So I already bought one... and I will totally buy 2 more if I can find them at this price... Thanks OP.

Costco will refund the difference. I got back $60 this past weekend for the two pairs of Keen boots that went from $59.97 to $29.97.

Must have been a long time ago. I know the website will sell you something with a 10% surcharge, but I've never noticed that option in a physical Costco and I have been going there for 15 years.
