This deal makes me want to go take more math classes. (Fortunately I already have a couple boxes from one of the last times a deal from pens-n-more was posted)

How do these compare to the Pentel line. I have the old blue 0.7mm and newer black 0.5mm - both of which I like. Are thes comparable in quality?

Yes it is, except I did not see it earlier, and already ordered the 3 for $5, kinda mad. But oh well... I still think I got a decent deal anyway at 3 for $5.

Edit: Ehh... wth, I bought a pack of these as well.

Some people enjoy the extra weight on a pencil and the 0.5 lead over the 0.7. In my opinion, it is constructed better than the papermate sharpwriter. It's all personal preference really. If you enjoy how those write then kudos to you. You don't have to spend a lot on mechanical pencils.

masterazn4 01-13-2013 03:50 AM

the zebra M-402's are better im still using the one from 12 years ago

Which pentel? 205/207 I'm guessing based on colors mentioned. Different kind on mech pencil. The 205+ Pentel line is a very basic mechanical pencil with a reasonable build quality and well made barrel to prevent bowing, along with decent lead. It's technically more of a graphing pencil than a writing pencil, though it's extremely popular with everyone.

PhD is a writing pencil, much better (for most people) suited to long writing sessions that would likely produce strain using a straight pencil like the Pentel 205/207. It's far more ergonomic, designed to fit easily in the hand. Though for graphing the PhD would likely get in the way since its design prevents large movements needed in drawing, etc.

I actually prefer Pentel as a brand, as I would imagine most do. Pentel does tend to be a bit pricier though. The PhD is designed more like the Sharp Kerry, though it is much cheaper. Sharp Kerry a much better pencil

Well the design is much different, basic pencil/graphing pencil vs writing pencil. The ergonomics would be the main thing.

The Sharpwriter by Paper Mate isn't all that bad but it isn't designed for long term use. They bow or break in pockets or from frequent use and they use pretty crappy lead that doesn't like hard writing. Also, the eraser is really low quality and won't erase cleanly and leaves a lot of dust.

If you like the design of the Sharpwriter I would suggest a Zebra M-301 or Pentel 205 as a good step up in quality for pretty cheaply.

Neon22 01-13-2013 05:33 AM

how are they able to sell these at just $1 each?

aznchris99 01-13-2013 05:38 AM

Nice!!

umustwait101 01-13-2013 05:48 AM

Sanford Titanium is the one I've been using since 11th grade. That would be 10+ years ago. I think it combines a narrower, straighter pencil with most of what the phD offers.

The whole papermate vs zebra aside, this isn't even the best price on these on ebay! If you really want papermate, buy the auction for 5 for $5.99 instead [ebay.com]. lol, my have the standards for FP status dropped low these days ...

I agree. I have been using the same pair for 7 years now. IMHO, the best pencil I have ever written with.

ellemdee 01-13-2013 06:17 AM

I used these pencils (and the pens) in college and they were a lot more comfortable than standard-diameter pens or pencils. I have small hands and my hands would hurt a lot less when taking notes for hours every day, so they would definitely be a lot more ergonomic for those with big man-hands as well.

rustydud 01-13-2013 07:36 AM

Take notice this is 0.5mm lead. For someone with a heavy hand like myself, I break the tip every time I put the pencil on the paper. I need minimum 0.7mm. Just an fyi

sbl03 01-13-2013 07:54 AM

6-pack for $6 is a far better deal.

It is 6 for $10 on Amazon, same as 3 for $5.
http://www.amazon.com/Papermate-U...ermate+phd

kevin319 01-13-2013 08:08 AM

0.5mm lead breaks easily for those who uses heavier stroke, would much prefer 0.7mm

6 Papermate PhD Indigo Blue 0.5mm Mechanical Pencils for $6

super deal

guarddog 01-13-2013 08:47 AM

This is for the Papermate PhD, not the PhD Ultra which is newer and doesn't have the rubbery bottom grip. I personally find the PhD Ultra to be better to use, especially when writing for long periods.

Years ago, I would be all over this. The mechanical pencil was the primary tool for a desk jockey. Now, of course, it's the computer and printer, and a pen when a writing instrument is needed.

These look like so many promotional pens I see in a doctor's office.

I prefer the higher-end heavier weight drafting class Pentels and Staedtlers from Japan. They look, feel, and are high-tech.

SacTu 01-14-2013 12:55 AM

I don't even write anymore, but LOVED these when I was a kid. Coming from a socioeconomically disadvantaged family, I have no idea why in the world my mom bought me one for $6 a pop. Now that I'm on track for a medical degree, it's the little things that count and now I'm buying one for old time's sake.

Actually went and bought the 6 for $10 since it's PhD "Ultras"

This story only works on dumb university liberals. See how much people care when you try to get a job in the real world, as pretty much everyone has a "socioeconomically disadvantaged family" and they won't give a crap about your struggles, because they had similar ones of their own.

Best mechanical pencils I've used and which I love to use them: ALVIN Draft Matic Mechanical Pencils.. absolutely brilliant mechanical pencils.

I do like Alvins; they have a nice weight (Koh-I-Noor is a cheap knockoff), but I stand by my last post. For me, the Staedtler's were better balanced and looked better too.

thankfully I only ever had to write one in-class essay in college. whatever note-taking I don't do on my laptop or tablet (which is 99% of my notes), I use a pen--my absolute favorite are the uni-ball jetstream 7mm retractable rollerball pens (e.g. here [amazon.com]), because of how smoothly and effortlessly the ink comes out. they always order them at my p/t job, and I take a couple every once in a while :P.

I pretty much lost all penmanship after I graduated HS. I used to have such legible, precise handwriting, but after living off my laptop in college everything I write comes out as chickenscratch.
