But that makes it better when you are listening to the old time radio channel.
I'll have to remember to tune in.

I think that's exactly what he means. The quality on Sirius/XM is embarrassing (especially for 2013) and has slid downward since the merger. Considering you can stream basically full fidelity from any number of free (or close to free) web-based sources, it's becoming a harder and harder argument to justify spending $13+/month on sat radio.

I have HD radio. Makes AM sound like FM which sounds better than satellite

waynebike 01-22-2013 06:46 AM

damn, no Faction. My subscription ended last month from the 6 months for something like $25 promo i got. I miss listening to the Jason Ellis show on my way home every day but cant justify paying monthly to listen to it.

Thank you for the Heads Up!

CinandGin 01-22-2013 06:53 AM

Thank for the info. Will tune in. Let subscription end a few weeks ago.

Ellis is pretty much the only reason I am subscribed. Just call and ask for a promo, they usually always immediately offer 50% off or can do the 5 months for $25, which is even cheaper. I think I havent paid full price for the last 5-6 years.

shaddai 01-22-2013 07:01 AM

HD Radio in the car sounds way better. Satellite radio only makes sense if you are a transplant and want to follow your old sports team or have really eclectic tastes.

I'll probably get traffic info back during this free period.

slickdealjunkie 01-22-2013 07:10 AM

Anyone else getting this?

•Campaign is invalid or expired

Nevermind. Got rid of the pre-entered promo code and it worked.

tkisling 01-22-2013 07:11 AM

If you call XM/Sirius and ask about deals and tell them you're considering cancelling (similar to what you'd do for Comcast) they'll usually throw you a bone and offer you something. Last time I did, they gave me a buy 3 months, get 3 months free. I can justify $7 per month for 80's and 90's and the RawDog comedy, but $13-15 is too much.

It's a game they play...

dre9812002 01-22-2013 07:15 AM

I was offered 6 months for $30 in December. I won't be continuing after that six months unless they let me continue at $5/month. It's more convenient that constantly changing music on my iPod, but far from a necessity.

Do you have a smartphone? Spotify and/or Pandora are free.

rgf207 01-22-2013 07:22 AM

For those of you that don't want to pay the #13/month fee, call them and ask for a better rate. I have never paid full price for sirius since I signed up. Every time my subscription is up for renewal I call and tell them it's too much and I want to cancel. I get the promo rate of $6/month for the entire year.

I do the same thing for NFL Sunday Ticket on DirecTV. I've never paid more than $29.99 / month for that

BMFPitt 01-22-2013 07:30 AM

This include NHL games? That'll be more convenient than streaming from my phone through bluetooth.

smooth_criminole 01-22-2013 07:36 AM

Last time they offered a similar deal they took everyone's information and cancelled the deal like a week in. That was for a free year though. It was still scummy as hell though.

redking 01-22-2013 07:40 AM

No Premium Channels offered in the free preview.

mobo2112 01-22-2013 07:45 AM

Sirius...available channels...awesome

Business operations, practices, etc......SUCK.
Trying to get out of an auto-renew agreement with them is a SUPER PITA.

Yeah, that was incredibly lame. Worked for a day and expired on me, and they didn't even answer my emails.

All those who sub ended just call sirius up and tell them u got a promo 6 months for $25 in the mail. There is no code. I also sometimes tell them I got a 5 months for $19 with something like a comeback code. Been doing this for years and they never ask for proof. Sound quality isn't as good like HD radio but unlike HD radio XM does not annoy me by switching from digital to analog everytime I make a turn.

Cant agree anymore ! Whether you can get xm radio or not, its basically one click from them... im not paying for this

BosuxRedsux 01-22-2013 08:07 AM

like BJ'S who needs to pay for a subscription or pay for a yrly membership when u can count on these coming up every few months.

twistrman 01-22-2013 08:17 AM

Cancelled mine last month. After 4 years of getting promo pricing they refused to give me any discount. Talked to many people, I know how to play the game, nothing.

So I said fark off and cancelled.

Going on a road trip next week so on the way home I can listen for free. Works for me

imported_sd 01-22-2013 08:21 AM

Don't support scumbags like Howard Stern.

Psygnius 01-22-2013 08:24 AM

I got lucky, I got in on the lifetime subscription plan when they had it, and it has already paid for itself. Yeah, I wouldn't pay $13/month for it, that's way too much. I agree with everyone that said Pandora and Spotify is the way to go.

Sirius is great and all, but some of the channels are too specific. Like Sirius Hits 1 (Now on channel 2), they usually play the Top 40 hits. Since they don't have any commercials, the same 40 songs cycle through like every 2 hours or so. If I stick to that station every day I drive to work, I'll always hear the exact same songs.

However, for a free two-week no obligation service of Sirius, you should all go for it! I like the service overall, but it's not worth what they are charging now.

Beware though, these two weeks of free service are going to cost you a LOT in terms of spam calls from them that will just not go away.

Choose wisely.

Leave the promo code blank

I use 10minutemail for these things, works like a charm. Just record the address someplace else so you don't lose it.

pipdipchip 01-22-2013 08:46 AM

I like the idea of SiriusXM and used to have it but the sound quality is just too bad. I honestly can't believe they thought the sound quality would be acceptable when they designed this. I'm not sure what quality current hardware supports but they seriously need to consider increasing the bit rate on most channels. If I could get "HD" quality sound, I would sign up again.

that wasnt a deal, that was a prize that someone won and then the person posted the code.

can't really blame sirius for that, if you signed up for it it said "congrats on winning...."

I dont think there is anything to sign up for you just listen starting 1/30!

I tried again and left the promo code blank, that worked.
10 minute mail rules! new one for me.

zolttt 01-22-2013 09:06 AM

I just want to throw up some love for siriusxm, I have had xm literally for about 9-10 years. Their app sucks yes, but works fine on wifi with good quality for me always.

they always give me deals, and now that it is built in to my new car I am even happier... I have gotten that 6 months for 25 dollars, and online added for like 12 bucks on top of it for the 6 months.

I think they rule, and dont mind paying to listen to O&A, ron and fez, and some music from time to time...

avagyan 01-22-2013 09:07 AM

Hate Sirius XM monopoly! Hate their scam marketing tricks. HD Radio FTW!
Someone pls hack them or put their jazz channels and stream all over the internet.

simrick405 01-22-2013 09:08 AM

I left the promo code field blank, used an email address I had used before with them, and voila! It's working now - no need to wait until the 30th ;-)

junoj 01-22-2013 09:10 AM

Why would someone pay for that . . . I predict that they will be out of business when G5-6 is out

caseyfriday 01-22-2013 09:19 AM

The sound quality is definitely terrible, but I find it worth the $24 per 6 months I pay for it. It's nice to spice up the music collection every now and then - but then again, I don't have a smartphone. I'd probably just listen to Pandora (and not use satellite) if I did.

I also like it for all the news channels. Lots of variety there.

TheWellKnown 01-22-2013 09:24 AM

Last time this deal came around (October maybe?), my radio never re-activated so I called Sirius and they said the deal was not automatic for everyone. It seems if your radio has been deactivated for more than a year you may need to call them to get this free preview. The Sirius rep didnt confirm the one year timeline, but said "that may be the case". Great customer service, I know.

Just FYI for you guys.

nyg99 01-22-2013 09:33 AM

maybe I'm missing something but I have no issues with my sound quality on Sirius/XM. I usually listen to sports talk radio, and going back to AM makes my head hurt.

sports radio channels are on the lower bandwidth channels, so they sound a little worse than music channels.

But I too have never had any sound quality issues, and I consider myself to be a little bit of an audiophile... I dont even understand what sound quality issues people are talking about ? if you are transmitting your XM over a transmitter, or listen on 3g... it wont sound all that great

I agree with nojmplease.... My smartphone with tune-in or any other free internet radio makes sirius an unslick proposition IMO. Better yet, spend $10/month on spotify premium and get on-demand music anytime you want.

anonprodigy 01-22-2013 09:37 AM

Last time they had something like this for a month.. but I think it only applied to Sirius on your computer (? correct me if I'm wrong).

Does this apply to cars that have Sirius XM as well and aren't currently subscribed to it?

And to the poster on top that's talking about harassing calls. This DOES happen, my friend recently bought a car with Sirius and after the trial was over, he received numerous calls. He kept telling them he wasn't interested, but they kept on pushing him. Avoiding the calls does nothing, they just call again.

holmez 01-22-2013 09:52 AM

Too Much Compression

Not sure if it's the stations I listen to, but Hair Nation and some of the other channels around it sound overly compressed. I purchased a lifetime subscription in 2007 and it seems like it has gotten worse. I'm currently using a Sportster 5 receiver with a 3.5mm connection to the aux input on my car stereo. I also use it with a home dock and the portable boombox. My wife has it on her factory installed car stereo. Yes, the argument could be made that the source material was recorded that way, which wouldn't be inaccurate, but I'm convinced the sound quality has declined. Despite that, we still love to use it for long road trips.

If you think Sirius/XM doesn't have SQ issues, then you aren't even remotely an audiophile. The fidelity is roughly on par with a poorly encoded 64kbps mp3, and some of the music stations are even transmitting in mono (!) now. It's awful. What was passable in 2001-2005 is not acceptable in 2013, with smartphones and 4G connections. The Internet streaming version of Sirius/XM is slightly more acceptable, but it still doesn't approach Pandora/Spotify quality.

The problem seems to be that they are overloading their limited bandwith with pointless stations, like those artist-only ones and the endless talk stations.

nithos 01-22-2013 10:02 AM

My wife LOVES having factory installed XM in her car. We live in an area that you get 1 station each genre (Pop, Rock, Classic Rock, Country, etc), so this gives her a lot more variety.

However, if she had an Aux input in the radio, I am sure she could live without it.

DAKn2 01-22-2013 10:06 AM

Free is the only way I'll listen; and then only for a while because the compression just sounds like crap.

If you buy at all; you buy Sirius/XM for it's content, definitely not for its fidelity.

I was a XM then Sirus/XM customer since its Sept 11, 2001 launch (yep, bad timing), and I bailed on it last year. However, I never paid full price for a subscription after the initial term, and never should anyone else. Sirius will give you 6 months for $25 every time you call customer service and ask. I did this for years, or some similar variation (they had 5 months for $20, etc). But in 10 years, Sirus/XM never improved their product. In fact, they started off with DJ managed stations, with people who had great depth of knowledge in their genre, but after the merger, many of these people were fired or left during cost cutting. They moves to recorded loops or low-dollar, low knowledge DJs and playlists.

In the end, I found Spotify and Pandora to have better stations, for free. Spotify has much better sound quality (streams to 190 bitrate). Free Pandora isn't great, you need Pandora One for higher sound quality, but it's as good as Sirius.

I've been a Sirius subscriber since 2004 and yes, the sound quality of music channels leaves much to be desired. I mostly listen to Boneyard, Hair Nation and Liquid Metal for music so it's not like there are many quiet passages in that type of music. I would imagine the classical and opera channels have more bandwidth dedicated to them since the SQ issues would be more noticeable there.

Otherwise, I listen to Howard Stern, and NFL Radio and have no complaints about the talk-radio sound quality.

that is crazy, may just be a unit issue. I swear I had a roady 2 (god knows how old that is now) just over FM, they sent me a letter that the signal in it broke new FCC regulations, so then I had it wired into my FM antenna (for free, paid for by XM) and it sounded great. Now I have it as part of my car stereo in my new car and with the 7 speaker sound, it sounds awesome.

I have never really noticed and sound issues, come to think of it I will say that I have a friend at my last job that had a VW, and his always sounded like garbage.. sports or music... had the same sound you described.

I really think this is a manufacturer thing, as mine has always sounded great in my honda, and my mom has it in her ford escape and it sounds great in there too.

man I could not disagree more, I just replied to a post mentioning my situations. But I had a roady 2 with XM transmit over the FM, sounded ok... but XM paid for it to be hardwired through the FM antenna and it sounded good.. not tremendous, but good.

I now have it factory installed in my new cr-v with the 7 speaker system and it sounds awesome, not mono, not tinny, doesnt have that underwater sound. I have however been in cars where it sounds like pure garbage, and I know that talk stations have that tinny poor badwidth sound, but even the music stations have that poor quality. It could be a sirius vs xm thing, or a manufacturer thing.. but I dont think its an XM thing.

Thanks for the response. I often wondered about the difference among manufacturers, but like I said, hearing it on my wife's factory installed unit made me question if things had changed. I've been using the service since 2004 and I'd like to upgrade my 2007-2008 device, but I love the Sportster 5's 1-hour buffer. I'll give a quick listen to the other stations tonight to see if it's just HairNation, Lithium, etc. I don't recall it being present on the jazz and classical stations though. Given that the Roady 2 is long in the tooth, do you have any other device recommendations? It's being used with a Clarion CZ500 head unit aux input.

edit

Decided to do the google thing and found a recent forum discussing this very subject...gotta love the Internet. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1388846...nhancments

Seems the XM codecs are better than the Sirius codecs according to the posts. As with anything, I'm sure it's subjective, but it makes sense if you are using an XM Roady 2 and I have a Sirius Sportster 5.

develo 01-22-2013 11:18 AM

It's not working with the Promo Code.

And if you remove the promo code, I bet you'll get the old 7 day trial, not 14.

For an email, use 10minutemail.com [10minutemail.com]. I occasionally use the trail to listen online free for a week, they always have a 7 day trial.

TonyTouch 01-22-2013 11:21 AM

How is the sound quality compared to standard FM radio?

I was looking forward to having XM in my next car because we take a lot of road trips through rural areas. But these posts about poor sound quality concern me.

zolttt 01-22-2013 11:22 AM

I have no real XM device recommendations, my new cr-v has it (XM not sirius) built in and it sounds awesome. I read that the XM ONYX is decent, someone posted on SD about a deal on it I think, but it is only 40 bucks on amazon.

reading that link, I did some more research, the 2 brands of cars I heard the bad audio in were VW and KIA who are both sirius. However I swear another friend of mine had sirius in his jeep and I dont remember it sounding as bad...It is crazy that there is such a difference.

tC2009 01-22-2013 11:35 AM

I got three months (I think) preview automatically a couple beginning of January. Received a letter in the mail from so and so exec at Sirius saying it would be on. Though it was a preview for everyone. Looks now like it is targeted?

It's a different sort of bad. XM is loaded with digital artifacting and some stations are worse off than others (e.g. mono vs stereo, varying bitrates). Think of a badly encoded MP3 file or audio from a low-quality Youtube video.

FM is just lacking any and all dynamic range, and of course you face the issue of interference. HD Radio is slightly better but extremely wonky technology. And of course, all of those glorious commercials...

THAT BEING SAID, XM on a roadtrip can be a godsend. You ears eventually can adjust to the SQ, and the tradeoff of the great programming on certain stations is still worth it IMO.

I agree 100%! I don't think these idiots have a clue. If they would just offer decent prices to everyone they'd probably increase their customer base and increase revenue.

XM (and Sirius to some degree) made some _terrible_ deals for content. Their operating cost shot up because of this so they are probably having a difficult time collecting revenue. IMHO, the company is simply missed managed.

I much prefer XM content to Pandora. Also, there are no worries about keeping a data connection in order to obtain content. I can drive anywhere and still pull in XM.

dishguy 01-22-2013 12:33 PM

i don't subscribe to the service and always take advantage of the free preview. I mostly listen to the 1 or 2 comedy channels they have, but i've found that it's the same stuff i hear everytime.. so it seems to me like either there is no new content, or they play the same preview all the time, which is stupid because then people like me will think its the same shit over and over and not worth paying for anyway...

I managed to luck into a login/password that works for internet radio. I can't get it to work in my car though. I never use it though. When I want to listen to internet radio, I just access my Directv via my Slingbox and I can listen to anything I want. And this way, I never accidentally listen to howard stern. What a waste.

roybok 01-22-2013 02:24 PM

This post reminded me about my subscription coming to and end soon. I called and wanted to cancel, they offered 1/2 off, and then eventually $5 for 5 months ($29.91 total). Every time I said NO, the price dropped. It's worth it for $5/mo. Not willing to pay more than that.

Thanks for the post OP.

Oh -since y'all are on the topic, XM sounds pretty good in the Honda. I'm wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but have a decent ear for pitches, etc. The 7 speakers sound great whether it's a CD or XM.

baddog992 01-22-2013 05:16 PM

Xm radio is great if you travel a lot and are always on the road. The sound quality is not great however in a noisy car that I mostly drive it sounds just fine. The other nice thing about it is live news, sporting events like NBA, College football games and hockey games and the comedy along with the old time radio like Jack Benny and the like. They also have a ton of music channels without the commercials. I like it, I dont like the the fm transmitter they use, its super weak, I use a cassette adapter to listen thru the radio.

Now I have it as part of my car stereo in my new car and with the 7 speaker sound, it sounds awesome.

Timing is good on this. I just purchased a used Sirius radio for $10 and it will arrive in time for the promotion. Hopefully can test the radio and see how much I like/dislike the service.

I used to subscribe to Sirius just for Stern, but when half his shows became "Richard and Sal gay stunts" (or talking about same), I quit listening. I'm happily onto free Adam Carolla podcasts now and he's much more interesting. He even has new Adam and Drew podcasts that reproduce the old Loveline show. There's a special Android app or through iTunes. Or listen through the website: http://adamcarolla.com/

stefaniaf 01-24-2013 06:55 AM

I know I was listening to Stern for the first time in a few years yesterday (got the 7 day free trial to start me off) and it was not like I remembered. I did listen to Dr. Laura yesterday while I was doing errands and that was great. LOL I love talk/news and our local stations are not that great.

That's what I think too. No where does it tell you to sign up for Sirius Free Trial. It just says turn on your radio and listen.

stefaniaf 01-25-2013 08:28 AM

Yeah just kind of a heads up for anyone thinking of subscribing or renewing keep in mind it will be free for 2 weeks. We can bump up the thread next week.

TheCarsForever 01-28-2013 12:22 PM

I keep seeing posts about errors signing up for this and wanted to clarify - there is nothing to sign up for. This is for previous SiriusXM customers and supposedly you just turn on your existing radio during the promo and it will be active for the 60 channels included in the free preview (more info here[/URL [[URL]http]]).
This said, I have a 2010 truck which a Sirius receiver and it has NEVER worked for any of the free listening promos. I have called a number of times and each time go through a ton of hoops only to be given a vague statement about how not all radios will work with the promo or that if you have not been active for awn extended period of time it won't work. The first preview was about 6 months after the service ended and I have a few friends with the same radio and model truck that do get the promo. SiriusXM CSRs just say that even with the same equipment, there may be a difference in the hardware we cannot see that is the reason for the problem.
All in all, this is a YMMV situation and for those that get it the price is right.

stefaniaf 01-29-2013 07:46 PM

The other thing about this deal is that we can listen free online!

They don't have Sal and Richard on too much any more. I can't take listening to Ronnie the Limo Driver yelling at 6:45 a.m., either. But I tune away and come back later for something better. Still a great show after all these years. Today, Howard had a great interview with Jason Bateman and later with Tommy Mottola.

set your XM to channel 0 (or is it 1?) and write down your XM code that is on your screen. Call them and tell them it isn't working. Give them the code and they will fix it.

This x100. Thanks to Alt Nation, I made the drive down to Brooklyn to see the Neighbourhoods. Amazing band. I also like 1st Wave and Lithium. 1st Wave in particular is awesome because according to most classic rock stations, 80's rock doesn't exist...

EvilRyu666 01-31-2013 08:05 AM

I called them up to find out what was going on, apparently my radio was registered in someone else's name and only had a 3 month free trial I guess a few years ago and now they have some other radio registered to them. The great part is that about 3 years ago the dealership had to replace my nav/radio unit and claimed to have put in a brand new one. I never resubscribed to sirius since then and really wish I did, it's obvious it was not a new unit. Damn lying dealership guys. Anyways, they started the free trial, but it's still in the other guys name.

I got XM August 2010 for the 80/year deal, then got 80/year again August 2011, then got 6 months for 30 something twices , then just got 5 months for $25 a few weeks ago.

w3kn 01-31-2013 08:43 AM

Every time they do a free period, the number of stations goes down.

I dumped both Sirius and XM when they claimed they couldn't merge my accounts (had XM before the merger, bought car with Sirius in it) so I couldn't just "add a radio" to either account. They wouldn't offer a trade-in or discount on new equipment, either.

Calling to threaten to cancel has worked for me for nearly 8 years.

Got my 1st year free from some code on SD, then paid $77/yr for 3 years and since then been paying $25 for 5 months. Just make sure you remind yourself to call or you'll be paying full price!

Never knew that lifetime subscription was an option. Sucks though that since I have XM it doesn't include the Sirius channels nor their online channels.

I called about the 1 month free trial back in about October 2011...when I called they said, OK, your 3 month trial is all set up (lol, I only wanted 1 month). However, my service is still active today...almost 18 months later. LOL. So, free for 13 days...MEH. :)

Thanks for the heads up on this deal. I have a Sirius radio in my Audi Q7 and was thinking about ordering a subscription until I listened to it through this free promotion period. However, after listening to it, I will stick with my IPOD connected into the radio. Worst than FM radio. I think that the SIRIUS sound quality is like how the Carnival Triumph smells right now.

I loved Siruis XM when I had it. I listen to a lot of talk radio (use my iPod for music), and this was especially great for baseball games. However, I am a broke college graduate that had to part with the majority of the nonessentials...

Suzook1 02-14-2013 03:27 AM

what are you all paying for those that have a premier. Just coming off my three months free and only want to continue unless its premier. Can it be had for under $100?

dscline 02-14-2013 05:43 AM

I just discovered the "freeview" yesterday when I noticed the NAV system in my car was suddenly providing traffic info. So I checked out the satellite channels, and sure enough many if not most of them were on. But wow, I never realized how bad it sounds. I can't believe people pay for this. Worse than FM. Way worse than HD-radio. And way way worse than the 128-320kbs streams I typically capture and copy to SD cards to play in the car.

But I do appreciate the free preview to let me judge it for myself. Nice to know I haven't been missing out on much. :)

Well, I never paid for a sub but only got the first three months and then the occasional one or ttwo weeks free view. The one benefit for XM is it works all over the place when you are traveling. When I commute, I listen to FM, for news, but once going out of local, the FM channels all changed, and I just don't want to scan the channels for that one trip.

johnh 02-16-2013 07:09 PM

New Car XM was about to expire, so I called to renew. They offered $150 for 12 months, and I said I saw it for $70 for 12 months somewhere. Then they said they could offer 12 months for $87 to me. I said that is still a bit much, as my friend had $70 for 12 months (lie). I noted I heard of $25 for 6 months and they offered that. I also signed up for it to renew after 6 months for $87/12 months, but we'll see what type of deals are going on in 6 months....

Call 866-410-3696. Tell them you received an offer that you would like to act on. They will ask what offer and you will say 6/25. Should give it to you right away.

There was no back and forth in my case

I feel it is only worth $1.00 per month. I can't believe anybody pays the full price. Even if you are living in your car it is not worth the full price.

If I had to pay full price, I would cancel it immediately. I can spare $5 a month for it.

Consider that you can hear just about anything. Dirty jokes, Dr Laura Show, ESPN, etc. $4 is ok per month, but I still have not had the urge to sign up for it.

Where is the "Royalty free" in the above quote? Looks like $5.09 in taxes & royalties to me.

I was offered $24.99($30.18 w/t&r) for 6 months, when I called in last week to re-up. She offered it 1st thing w/o me asking.

BTW I did get "royalty free"(sort of) last time on $25 for 5 mos. They made it $25 total, as I said "I won't pay the royalties or taxes", however, as an accountant, I know that they had to reduce the actual fee & back in the R&T, which of course, must be paid by them.

Think about this folks.

Sirus XM is one way data. They dont have to worry about incoming data back to them.

So they want to sign up for as many people as possible. The more the better.

If you pay more than $25 for every 6 mths, u are giving your $ away.

If we don't give away some $$ we will buy too many of those "Big sandwiches of yours" &
gain too much weight & die early. ;)
So you could say that Sirius XM saves our lives.:D

Cancel your service, then 5 minutes later, call 866-434-7429 and tell them about the 6/$25 deal. They should not hesitate in giving it to you.

does anyone know if they give better deals if you have more than one siriusxm radio in multiple cars? I assume that one 6 month for $25 would be for just one radio since it seems to be based off the radio id. I have two vehicles that both have sat radio capabilities...would be nice if you signed up for the 6 month/$25 and could get it in both cars...that's not how it works tho, right? Just wanted to know all my options before I called.

chong67 03-01-2013 11:43 AM

I try TuneIn Radio and there is an unsensor radio station called "Comedy104" and it is just like Laugh USA on SirusXM.

Why would even want to pay for this?

I believe it's for one radio. They are greedy, this is the best they can offer:D
