3 gallon Compressor $29 at home depot YMMV

I was in my local home depot tonight and saw they had the HDX 3 gallon compressor Model # TAW-0412P-K1 marked down from $49.88 to $29.00. It didn't indicate it was on sale or on clearance, it was just marked down. It still shows $49.88 on their website.

Store sku 628214.

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5...QCC5ieCkfE

Edit: It looks like the price is still dropping. As per posts later in the thread, it dropped to to $25, and now people are finding it for $20.

ReverseHandedJO 01-23-2013 05:16 PM

might be an overstock item in your store and marked down for stock leveling

twiggss94 01-23-2013 05:39 PM

oil-less= LOUD

ChicagoJim 01-23-2013 05:40 PM

$29 for me in stock in Chicago. Thanks OP. I'm gonna hold off this time though, the reviews aren't too good.

signalsoldier 01-23-2013 06:12 PM

thanks OP showing 49 for me :(

babyjay8495 01-23-2013 06:15 PM

I've never been a fan of anything less than 6 gallon compressors. Something this size would run all the time to just keep up with basic hand tools. It's a good price, but better off spending the money on something a little bigger so you don't have to stand around all day waiting for the pressure to build up.

backpacker2004 01-24-2013 05:46 AM

out of stock for me.

On the size and sound - yep you guys are right -oil-less is loud, and only 3 gallons means constant on/off and waiting for pressure.

The big plus side is the low weight. Get the big one for the garage, and this one for around the house. I've even used a similar one for quick fencing jobs out on the farm (no need to bring a generator or a super long chain of extension cords).

limpy 01-24-2013 05:56 AM

wtf is this HDX crap they keep bringing into their stores? I wonder if this is on par with Harbor freight quality. At least there you know what you're getting.

PedroR 01-24-2013 06:33 AM

is hearing protection included?

Rheen79 01-24-2013 08:34 AM

I'm pretty sure these are overstock leftovers from Black Friday. They have tons left at my local HDs
For $30 you get what you pay for (yes I bought one). It's loud, runs near constantly while you are using it, but it's very lightweight and portable and works well for me for driving a handful of brad nails on small projects rather than running 150ft of hose from my good workhorse compressor in the garage to an upstairs bedroom just to put up a small trim piece.

Shane_pcs 01-24-2013 11:00 AM

I picked up the last one at my home depot. Was wanting one of these cheap compressors for some simple things like blowing up sports equipment and tires, but didnt want to drop $50 with the bad reviews. For $29, i pulled the trigger. Hell I even bought the $6 2yr replacement plan. At least with this no longer being available, if it sucks and break then I can exchange it for the newer version.

techdodo 01-26-2013 12:20 PM

I used this for the first time today. I bought it because I have had some trim I have needed to install for about two months and I had been putting it off. I bought a nail gun at the same time I bought the compressor. The nail gun was bad. I had to exchange it, but the once I had a good one, the compressor worked great. It made short work of the trim job. I always had plenty of air. Never had to wait for the compressor. It would turn on every 6 or 7 nails or so. As far as loudness, it doesn't seem that loud to me, but I have no point of reference. It certainly isn't as loud as say, a circular saw, while it is louder than say, a power drill. For $29, it certainly did what I needed it to do.

There was another one in the store in the clearance section that looked identical to this. I went back and forth between them multiple times trying to figure out what the difference was. Eventually I concluded the only difference was this one had an orange knob for adjusting the pressure and the other one had a grey knob. The other one was $79 marked down to $52 in the clearance section. I actually found the one I bought for $29 with the other compressors when I went looking for the nail gun. The other one did have a different sku number though, so make sure you look for the one with the sku # in this post, which has an orange knob. I think people are right, this was the one they had for black Friday for $50. When I bought mine earlier in the week I had taken the last one, but when I went back to exchange the nail gun today, they had a couple more on the shelf.

HDX is Home Depot's own brand. (Insignia = Best Buy, Kirkland = Costco, etc.)

it's just more crap quality stuff to screw unsuspecting home owners who buys these low end tools only to have fail 6 months later the 3rd time they use it. i guess they still have their husky brand to be "proud" of

Thanks op. Picked one up for 25 at my local store. I have been wanting a small compressor for tires and general air gun stuff for computers, car mods, etc so this thing works perfect and right in the price range that I am willing to pay for my usage.

Also came up as $25 for me although it was labeled as $29 on the shelf. I also got the 2yr replacement warranty since this is likely not to last very long.

Edit: LOL my unit was DOA

Importdude 01-29-2013 05:36 PM

just to let everyone know,
i was next to hd so i decided to come in to look for it. At first i did not find it, but after asking around they found all 7 on a shopping cart between an aisle.

also had sign marked down only $20

Scored one, Went home and tested it, works perfectly fine. comes with hose and fittings

flipmarc 01-29-2013 05:40 PM

OOS in both local stores and $49.88 online :(

These were $20 at my store today! Still had a handful left! N Charleston, SC

cheapchips 01-30-2013 02:25 PM

This would probably be better than that POS tire inflator I'm currently using. (Takes forever to fill 6-7 psi).

Going to HD later anyways, keeping an eye out for it.

SecretAznMan 01-30-2013 04:08 PM

Came up $20 for as well.

fatbastard 02-01-2013 05:03 AM

Read about the DOA so I picked up 4 this morning even though I only need 2. Got them in Paterson NJ and they had 5-6 more on the shelf, they came up as 20 bucks each.

DallasGuy 02-06-2013 11:29 AM

Thanks OP, got it for $20 today here in Dallas.

JAXXBOSS 02-06-2013 12:09 PM

furthest of my 6 HD's was the only one in stock, so ordered it for B%M pickup but the price jumped to $49... Called in and had them deliver for the same price.
She did say they were having problems with the web site, but not sure if it was strictly regarding this item or what.

Mummel 02-06-2013 12:14 PM

Noob question - what size compressor would I need to blow out a three zone sprinkler system? I had it done before the winter for $80. They guy brought a huge compressor towed behind a truck. I was hoping I could do it myself next year, albeit even if I have to do it more slowly, moving through the zones one by one as I wait to store more air.

Is this possible for a DIY job? Any recommendations? TIA!

I use a 12 gallon compressor and it works fine. Just set the psi to around 30 and you'll be good to go. It'll probably take you 30-40 min. Remember to shut the compressor off when you do it since it'll want to keep on re-airing the tank (this is when you burn out your motor). Usually rtakes me about 16 gallons of air to FULLY clear each zone. I air up the compressor twice and usually let it sit for about 10-15 min.

dmzauk 02-06-2013 12:36 PM

I decided to pull the trigger on this after thinking on it for awhile. The website show's $20.00 but when you add it to your cart it show's $49.xx, so I called and they honored the $20.00 price & free shipping and she said they were getting a lot of calls on this item. She knew what item I was talking about just telling her about the price issue. So, $20.00 and free shipping to the house. If I don't like it I'll take it back. Thanks OP.

Im reading that you need a compressor from 5-10 CFM at 40PSI with at least 20 gallons. Are those specs accurate? If so, what do you think about this one?

Two very different types of air compressors. The oiless type you buy in most hardware stores are high pressure and low volume. To blow a sprinker system out the correct way you need the opposite, low pressure and high volume.

With that said, I've done it with my 26 gallon Craftsman compressor. I went slow, and went over my 6 zones 2 or 3 times. The key is you want to not spend too much time blowing out a single zone, as the pipes and fittings may overheat. As soon as water stops blowing out (and starts misting,) I close the zone and let the air tank refill for the next zone. I know I'm not blowing the lines out completely, but they are mostly clear and I haven't had any problems the following Spring.

My tank pressure is about half of full pressure after blowing out each zone.

That is more than enough of a compressor for any household job. i set my pressure to about 30 psi because the pressure coming out of your water pipes should be around there.

Ditto, when the sprinklers start misting, i stop and go to the next zone. I come back around and finish off the "misting". It should be pretty clear of how much water is really still in the pipes. When the mist starts to disappear, you're basically done. I step on the sprinkler heads that don't mist anymore to save "air" in case the last sprinkler in the zone is still misting. Its pretty easy, just don't be lazy and do it around beginning of nov/thanks giving (i'm in nj). You don't want your pipes to burst and having to dig it up and patch

ImmaSquashYou 02-06-2013 03:12 PM

btw, bigger isn't necessarily bigger. You just need to ask yourself if you'll be using it as a paint gun, sander, grinders and stuff. If you are a diy non-professional, a 20gallon should suffice

pcgamer4life 02-06-2013 03:21 PM

The hose and very few accessories alone are worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $12 (if purchased BM), $20 for this is a steal. I've been meaning to pick up a hose like that (only have a 50ft 3/8" rubber one right now) and a new blow gun.. I might just swing by and get this whole kit tomorrow.

illogos 02-08-2013 06:06 AM

Just managed to successfully order this item online for delivery $20 + tax. Now to see if they actually fill the order. Anyone else who wants to try:

1. Search google for hdx 3 gallon air compressor
2. Use google cache for second result.
3. Click add to cart button.
4. Checkout.

I tried this process with the $49 porter cable, but it said it wasn't available online anymore and kept kicked me back to cart. When I tried it with this one it worked and generated the confirmation email.

bobley 02-08-2013 11:25 AM

Not sure mine will ship, but can this run air tools to work on the car? I can't always fit my electric impact gun and a 90 degree air ratchet could be great for getting bolts off.

frylock505 02-08-2013 11:27 AM

Just got a confirmation email using this trick; let's hope it ships!

only tools for a car this will work on is the inflating tires tool! for car air tools, you need at least 1.5 times the CFM the tool requires and almost always more than a 15gal tank or more.

scutzi128 02-10-2013 07:59 AM

OK so I finally got a working compressor and one of the things that bugged me was that the light on the switch didn't work so I decided to hook it up. It was simple..just one wire needed to be added. Here is what I did.

Stock switch compressor on, light off.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps3c011c56.jpg

First unscrew the 6 Phillips head screws around the top trim piece and separate the 2 pieces.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps95fd9884.jpg

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps7a7f6198.jpg

I next put some grease on the plastic gear attached to the pump...it looked unlubercated to me and I felt a little grease never hurt anyone.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...psdf1f79b0.jpg

To get the light to work you basically have to add a wire from the neutral to the thrid prong on the switch. To do this I then gently removed the wires connected to the switch and removed the cap on the neutral wire splice. I then twisted the new wire onto this splice and added a wire nut.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...psd7984e76.jpg

I then soldered the other end of this wire to the 3rd prong on the switch and connected the other 2 wire back up to the switch.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...pse37d9f46.jpg

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps27d39d65.jpg

Now reassemble the 2 halves together making sure that the wires are as far away from moving parts as possible and bam you are done.

Awesome - thanks for the pictures. Wonder why they just didn't add that wire? Guess to save a few pennies. Why did you solder it to the prong? Did you just not have a fitting to crimp on like the other connections? Just curious.

Also it looks like you used white grease ; correct ? I've got a decent supply of white grease (inherited from my Dad) - so I can use that. Thanks.

Yea I used white grease I had left over from a garage door opener repair kit. I just lubed the large white gear and spun it around to work the grease in. Make sure you have the cover on when you turn it on though as grease will fly all over.

Mine shipped using the cache trick. Do I actually want to keep this? Will it pump tires better than the compressors that come with car battery jump packs? Or am I better off spending $20 toward a better compressor? I don't expect to use this much. I'm trying to avoid deal clutter.

it will for sure pump up tires better than those jump pack compressors!! i got a little 12v compressor for my wife to carry around with her on the road just in case at it took close to 3 minutes to pump up her tire from 15psi to 35psi (i know, i know, she told me her TPMS light came on a few weeks ago, but she thought it was just the cold....!). it has a slow leak, so i refilled it from 25 to 35 in about 3 seconds w/ this compressor. plus this little thing will work fine for trim work with a smaller brad nailer or staple gun. it also will work great for blowing out the computer and things like that. just think, all the money you can save over those stupid cans of air!

i personally will be taking mine back, due to the fact that i got the porter cable one for $49 that has about 4 tiems the cfms at 90psi, which means it will refill faster, as well as its a 135 psi tank, versus this 100psi tank.

Can the $49 one run impact tools for the car? I've not owned a compressor. I guess I'll dabble with this cheap one and look for another deal if I need better.

Agree with you ; the Porter Cable is better for the reasons you cited. IMO it's the better compressor at $49 even sans the 13 pc accessory kit the $20 HDX has. I'm waiting delivery of my HDX one. Probably will keep the HDX & won't switch over to the PC because it appears they are no longer in stock.

no. again, your compressor needs to be at least a 15 gal and 1.5 times the cfm of the impact tool you will be running.

Ugh, any luck with these any more? I found some in stock (on-line) at a local store, but the on-line price is $79. I guess I just have to go down there? Thanks!
