Grrrr, I just ordered the Yamaha 5.1 an hour ago. I think I made the better choice but didn't need to see this price drop.

niz0 01-23-2013 11:33 PM

I wonder how this compares to the HK AVR 1700 that was sold at BB for $200? I got mine for $150 w/ the MasterCard deal but this looks compelling.

Believe me - the Yamaha is FAR superior to the Onkyo. Don't have buyers remorse.

While you're listening to your reliable receiver, everyone that bought this will be in Onkyo customer service hell about why their HDMI ports don't work.

needgeech 01-24-2013 04:50 AM

How did you get it for $150 when the HK 1700 deal ended on Saturday (but probably much sooner as stock ran out.) and $50 MC deal was Monday??
Im not thread crapping. I Have an HK that I have until tomorrow to pickup

Read recent reviews on Amazon, Newegg, and AVS forum - still dealing with it. It's a crapshoot, of course - so you may end up with one that works perfectly. It's got more features than the Yamaha, but you have to decide if it's worth the risk or not.

omatthew1 01-24-2013 05:30 AM

I got the HK1700 and love it so far. I used to have an Onkyo but became a sorry victim of the HDMI blowout.

Can anyone rep to the quality of this versus similarly priced receivers?

Also, does this have HDMI pass through?

Does this have HDMI pass through?

What are better options at this price point? Or slightly higher?

Yes, it has HDMI pass through.

At this price, also consider the Yamaha v373, v471 (better - $199 Newegg), Denon 1612 (accessories4less refurb'd), Pioneer vsx-1022.

As far as sound quality goes, the list usually looks like:
1 & 2 - Yamaha, Denon
3 - Onkyo
4 - Pioneer

Reliability:
1 - Yamaha
2 - Denon
3 - Pioneer
4 - Onkyo

User friendly:
1- Yamaha
2 - Onkyo
3 & 4 - Pioneer, Denon

Questions to ask yourself:
do you need networking capabilities? Do you need 5.1 or 7.1? Do you want calibration? Do you need 1 or 2 USB ports? Do you need AirPlay? HDMI pass through? Video upscaling?

IMO, the best bet right now is the v471. It has calibration, 5.1 and no frills, great reliability and top notch sound quality. Plus it enhances the quality of compressed audio (mp3), which is essential for me since that's all I own these days.

But if you can demo each receiver, that's your best bet.

I bought the HK 1700 for 200 at BB and it died on me in 30 minutes, returned it the very next day for a refund, i was looking to upgrade my Onkyo tx sr605 that I've had for about 6 years and have never had an issue with it but now i need something with 3d pass thru, love my Onkyo but i hear the newer models have issues.

Amazon had the TX-NR509 for sale for $156 a few weeks ago. This is the same receiver without Audyssey for $23 more? It's an OK deal, but nothing fantastic.

Thank you for the input. Does the Yamaha have HDMI pass through and AirPlay? My main issue is I would like to use it with my Apple TV and have really good sound with alot of base for my 3D TV and music through my iphone. 5.1 is enough for me. Is the wattage OK? Is the Yamaha still the best for that?

I wish I went with Yamaha! My Onkyo has been nothing but trouble, waiting to hear back on what they are going to do since it's been sent out twice and still doesn't work.

Considering it, but is it worth paying $40 more for a 1 year warranty and brand new?

I need to invest in a powered subwoofer so i can get a new reciever.

Yeah I didn't think to look at that. Perhaps you could still register the warranty as new? Even $200 for a factory fresh unit is pretty good.

superdoopercoop 01-24-2013 08:59 AM

If any of you have an electrical engineer friend (or know someone good at soldering), there is a pretty easy fix for the older Denon receivers that have the HDMI problem. I have the 606, and the HDMI started getting flaky.

After a bit of searching on AVSForum.com I found a "how to" thread on adding capacitors to the HDMI card which has a high probability of fixing the issue. Of course, my receiver was out of warranty when the problem started, so I didn't care about at least giving it a try. Apparently the caps on the HDMI card weaken over time (lose capacitance) b/c they aren't good quality, and that causes the HDMI to go out.

So, I grabbed some caps (Fry's/radio shack/etc) and added them in the proposed locations. I think I also spread a couple more around for good measure. To be extra safe, I added a 120mm PC Case Fan (very low RPM and quiet) to the chassis to keep temps cooler, and voila... ~2 years later, no problems whatsoever. The cap mods took about 30-45 minutes. Adding the fan required a bit more McGuyver skill and time.

Just thought I'd through this out there if any of you are using your old broken-HDMI Onkyo as a door stop or TV try --> maybe you can resurrect it.

By the way, good deal. TU. I also like the Open Box Yamaha RX-V471 found a few posts above!

I feel it's always at the $200 price point. I almost feel like that's retail lol.

yarnim 01-24-2013 09:14 AM

how does this compare to the receiver that comes in package with onkyo HT-S5400??

I bought two of those complete systems for $180...sold one for $230..kinda regretting that sale, i coulda used one upstairs!!

karrun 01-24-2013 09:20 AM

Let me say that Onkyo customer support rocks. I bought a AVR from them about a month ago and had trouble setting up the ARC from my TV. He helped me as far as he could, then gave me my TV manufacturer's number because the rest was on the TV settings, called me back in an hour to make sure I had gotten it working right, then spend an additional 15 minutes telling me how best to set up the speakers for maximum effect. I wish I could remember the name of the rep, but he was awesome.

They honored the previous weeks price and let me re-buy it w/ coupon. I also got a yamaha RX-V573 price matched to newegg and applied the $50 coupon on top. Got that one for under $300 w/ tax. Replacing a RX-V665 from 09'. Wish I could find as good a deal on something a little more high end.

Is the Onkyo TX-NR509 5.1 Channel Network A/V Receiver better or worst than this one? Anyone knows?

OstrichSak 01-24-2013 09:55 AM

So, dumb question from someone with four Onkyo receivers in use currently... what do you use the network functionality for on an A/V receiver? Config setup? Streaming audio?

I keep asking myself that same question. I'm a component purist, and want to keep devices as simple as they can be and use them as intended. A receiver, IMO, was never intended to be an all-in-one device.

Anyway, people use networking to stream music, pictures, videos, etc. But if you have Apple TV or PS3 or (insert streaming device here), it's really not necessary.

It's just like laptops - people say "I MUST have an i7 processor with 16 GB RAM because it's the best!" when really all they do is surf the web and an i3 would be just fine. Marketing makes us think we need more than we really do.

I mean, how many people honestly have a 7.2 surround setup in their house? Yet all mid to high end receivers have that as standard. I'm guessing none of them are married...

Thanks for the reply. Rep'd. I tend to agree with most of what you said. My home theater is 'only' 5.2ch but I have never once heard a complaint out of anyone who's experienced it. To me, the .2 (two 15" subs) are more important than the two additional surround speakers. lol

I have 7.1 here. ;) I would go to 7.2, but do not want to fork out for two new subs (since they would have to match!) and really do not gain much in my setup to warrant the need for a second subwoofer.

The HK 1700 looked nice (aesthetically) and I almost ordered it on 12/31 until I noticed it was severly lacking inputs (HDMI is ok but for devices that only have component out such as the Wii or legacy SACD /
DVD-Audio players etc. the HK is lacking in inputs (not a single component input as just one example).
It turned out to be blessing in disguise because the 60+ lb high end Newcastle R-972 went on sale (for one day) for $299 shipped with no tax.

I'm new to the surround sound family, just pulled the trigger on an Onkyo 7.1 system. Why do the subs have to be the same? By same do you mean complete specs or housing so that the delivery is the same? Does it have to do with the feed?

Lastly, how do you go about integrating the .2? (I can look up more details later, just looking for a layman term response for this.)

They do not have to be the same, I just would not be happy having mismatched components. You would want them to at least be similar in capability, though. It is easy to setup, you add the second subwoofer just like you would any other speaker. Instead of having one sub towards the center/front of the setup, you space them apart left-to-right.
