I bought this same laptop for $350 in Nov 2011. Its pretty decent for general browsing and watching movies. One of the few downsides is that it can get very warm if you're watching HD videos or light gaming.

Mostly flash games. I think the AMD processor in it just runs warmer in general. It's not really that bad but it's noticeable, especially since there is an air vent on the left side.

seriously? Who in their right mind buys this generation's laptop just for playing "flash games"?? Why not just go for a 10+ year old "gaming rig" instead? Yes, I do mean "gaming rig"...

For $299, I'd buy this for my wife for flash games in a heartbeat. I wouldn't even think twice. People come in all shapes and sizes and have equally as many views on what is value to them.

I don't believe I ever said I bought the computer to play just flash games. I was just mentioning that the computer can run really warm under some circumstances. What is to you anyway what people do with things they buy?

I am not a gamer, but I am not interested in the A6-4400M processor either. If it was any A6-3xxx APU or A8 I would buy it or a Pentium B9xx would also be good. It just takes too long to do anything with an under-powered CPU when I usually use a core i5 computer.

I bought a Samsung Laptop in Nov 2012, the one they had on sale in Staples. It had power problems. Had to ship it to Texas for repair. 45 days gone by and my Laptop is still not repaired yet. They won't give a replacement because the laptop qualifies for replacement if it comes for service more than 2 times. They can't repair because they have not yet received the part.

Currently using my 6 year old trusted Toshiba. I have used 3 toshiba's and one HP so far no complaints on both these companies.

It is your call if you want to buy a Samsung Laptop and suffer.

Toshiba and HP are, by far, the worst laptops I've ever bought in my life. Everybody has horror stories but I'll bet Toshiba and HP write the books that horror movies are based on.

Wow, this laptop is that old?

Does this laptop have gigabit ethernet? It doesn't say on Best Buy's page and this must be an exclusive Best Buy model as I see no info on it anywhere else.

KoalaS1n 01-26-2013 12:38 PM

Going over the spec's, it's an updated model of the one I have (they look very very similar), so I'm not sure when it came out. It's not on Samsung's website. Mine has Gigabit ethernet, so I could only imagine that this would would too.

Way off. AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M Accelerated Processor with AMD Radeon HD 7640G graphics > AMD Dual-Core A6-4400M Accelerated Processor with AMD Radeon HD 7520G graphics

Thanks for picking up on that. Clearly, I missed that. How can BB offer both for the same price point when the Acer is clearly a faster machine with better graphics.

I just bought the Samsung last night in an attempt to buy something portable. I was looking at Tablets, but the prices were more than this laptop for the 10inch models, with out keybrd.

So, now I'm wondering if I should start searching for the Acer model.

The case is pretty cheaply made. Already I've noticed that the headphone jack on the right hand side is warped and catching on fabric and my couch. If I run my hand along the side I can feel the sharp plastic sticking out. Not sure how to fix that as I imagine it will crack if I try to file the warped piece.

I booted it up today and have been doing some google and bing searches. The keyboard takes getting use to because the keys are so spaced out. I actually had to turn a light on so I could see the keys due to so many errors in the dark. It just takes getting use to, it's no major deal breaker. I also have to get use to the touchpad because my wrists keep hitting it and sending me all over the page. What I do find annoying is the placement of the home key right next to the alt key. I do keep hitting that while typing and it send me to the home page... ugh.

It takes a bit to boot up, but it looks like I will need to tweak some things in order to speed that up.

It's thin, but feels big due to it's width.

I noticed at 5.2lbs on the spec sheet, it's lighter than comparable laptops (which are 5.5-5.9lbs).
It has more USB connections than most comparable laptops, and has Bluetooth as well.

You can look into the touchpad settings for a "Palm Check" feature (can be called different things depending on touchpad brand). I've found it to be quite useful to keep my hands from moving the touchpad while I'm typing.

Can you confirm this laptop has gigabit ethernet?

gigabit Ethernet at this price range, highly doubt it

Yes, it was a 2 day sale.

Good laptop. Only problem I have with it is that it gets warm fast.

I purchased one on Friday but it has sat unopened while I research further. Anyone who bought this have any thoughts on the deal? I liked the smaller form factor and lighter weight but not sure about the build quality.

I jumped on this deal for a school laptop for my wife. It runs great. Handles all the software I throw at it nicely. Netflix streams great. The only problem I'm having is not connecting to my router.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, please feel free to chime in.

At $299.00 it was a no brainer.

I happened upon this laptop while returning a Tablet at BB. I've been lightly using it for the past few days. I still can't figure out how to get a DVD to play. It continues to prompt me to upgrade the video software/bloatware to a paid version!

While the pricepoint is good, I'm not sure what kind of value it is if I have to do a bunch of stuff to get this thing functional. It should be functional right out of the box.

It does get a little warm, but not super warm. Of course, it is winter and average temps are in the 20's. I may have a different impression in the summer months.

Spaced out keys take some getting use to as does Windows 8. I'm coming from XP Pro and I'm not sure I'm a fan of the new platform.

Check out classicshell.net its a free program for windows 8 that gives you the classic xp/vista start menu and a few other options.

I was just doing some reading up on the difficulty in playing DVDs. According to the web (support.Microsoft), there is a Microsoft Hotfix for the MPEG2 error I keep getting that dates back to Windows 7, Jan 2010. Shouldn't this be a non-issue for Windows 8 users since it's 3yrs old? Anyway, the issue is with systems that have PowerDVD installed--the default media player.

MS recommends waiting until the next service pack is released if user is not severely impacted. I'm not sure how a user isn't impacted if they are NOT able to play commercial DVDs. Here's the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978206.

I guess I have to deal with calling MS to get the Hotfix. That's bull!

sofeisty 01-29-2013 02:20 PM

Well it was for my son who is in college and needed a laptop. I ended up opening it and doing a reset in order to get the bloat off the laptop so the learning curve would be shorter. I installed VideoLan as the default media player and did not reinstall PowerDVD. I don't know if he has tried to play DVDs but hopefully the issue is just with PowerDVD and not all DVDs.

So far my son is really impressed with the laptop. He came from a Dell Inpsiron 1545 that did not last three years. I'm buying a Squaretrade extended warranty and for the price I also think this purchase was probably a 'no brainer.'

Add Dell to that list.

I thought Dell has the best PCs going these days (Business class anyway)... What is your preferred manufacturer and why?

How does this laptop compare to the Samsung?
