I rented this movie in blu ray for almost free the other day using a Redbox code and was surprised that is has the option to watch the movie in 3D. Not sure if this option is available only to those with 3D blu ray player and TV.

wreckonized 01-27-2013 01:43 PM

saw this movie last night. it was alot better than i expected.

matownz 01-27-2013 02:56 PM

Anyone here actually seen it in 3D? I can't wait to watch it on my 60" Panasonic in 3D!

Any other recommendations for 3D movies? My favorite three 3D movies I've watched at home so far are Avatar, Prometheus, and Avengers. I've seen some decent animated flicks, but that's not really my cup of tea. I'm hoping this Dredd flick is good!

Imax under the sea is outstanding.

ktg 01-27-2013 03:10 PM

Saw this on blu-ray from Redbox last week, better than expected even allowing for the heavy plot-lifting from The Raid: Redemption. The slo-mo camerawork was fairly amazing.

nxsfan 01-27-2013 03:30 PM

This was the pre-order price from amazon.

Howie411 01-27-2013 04:48 PM

FYI, this is currently $20 at Best Buy, and if you turn in any DVD you get a $5 off Blu-Ray coupon bringing this movie to $15 + tax

Actually, the plot lifting was the other way around. They pretty much took the script and used it for The Raid with some slight reworking.

searsy 01-27-2013 05:17 PM

Dredd was a really good movie. Now they need to make "Nemesis the Warlock."

The movie was written before the Raid, dullard.

Saw it in 3D at the movie theaters and the 3D was awesome. The best flick I've seen in 3D so far is Life of Pi. I also have a 3D tv but there are too many 3D flicks I've seen to mention. I'd say watch any Disney/Pixar movie in 3D, Tron is also a good flick in 3D.

Cool! I didn't know you can rent 3D blu rays at redbox. Do you know if there are any other films that are in 3D?

This. Way better than Stalone's version.

I hope they come out with sequels for this.

StutterFace 01-27-2013 07:38 PM

Say what you want about the film, but John Carter is great in 3D if anyone is looking for good visuals.

Dredd has been $20 for a while. Was shot in 3D not converted, the 3,000 frames per second slo-mo scenes are insane. Review [highdefdigest.com].

Kryspie 01-27-2013 07:42 PM

film gettin lots of good word of mouth from the leaked copies and the blu ray sales that followed hinted that.

the preview I saw looked damn good but now the reviews are gettin to overrated now. Good flick if you want to turn off your brain and see some cool visuals.

Have you played yours yet -- or even just loaded it in the player. If not, definitely check earlier rather than later. Dredd seems to have some bad pressings in the pipeline with a surprisingly large % of reports being BBY purchases.

All of my players spit my first copy back out including my Oppo and my PC-BDROM -- wouldn't even load or recognize the disc was in the player.

Oh shit, I'm gonna put it in my PS3 now

Edit: works for me

I would certainly do that. Many folks have gotten BBY discs that have played fine.

I heard people say certain players have more trouble, I heard Fat/Slim Ps3 act differently, but for every player that doesn't play there are other people who have Dredd's that play fine.

I think the prevailing opinion is there are just some bad batches and BBY or at least certain regions got theirs out of those batches. I haven't exchanged mine yet, but the next disc I think I will open in the store and play on a couple different units before leaving.

Edit: Sounds like you got a good one. While there have been reports of random glitches during playback, most of the reports of the bad discs have mentioned them not even loading.

Not sure what the problem was but this was the first 3D BRD that I had issues with. A lot of double image problems. Maybe my eyes were just tired but I had to turn it off. Movie itself was pretty good and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Best 3D I've seen so far at home not on your list has to be Frankenweenie, Coraline, and IMAX Under the Sea. Prometheus and Avengers were good because they were subtle. Didn't take away from the movie.

Sorry fanboy. I was misled by this review at DVDTalk [dvdtalk.com]into thinking it was the other way around. Not sure how exactly that makes me a dullard, but thanks anyway for contributing.

Icekeep9 01-27-2013 10:55 PM

This movie was a lot better than I thought it would be. It is actually a good movie that is pretty sick to watch in 3D especially with the slow mo scenes. I just watch it on my TV in 3d and I thought the visuals looked great. Interesting movie too. $20 dollars for a new 3D movie is a good deal.

gyzo33 01-27-2013 10:57 PM

This movie was A LOT better than expected and much better than the original.

I saw it in 3d. I have the cheaper 3D system/glasses. Great 3D flick, just enough effects.

But for 20......eh.

Is it against the rules to ask anyone not using their UV code to PM it to me?

SuperTroller 01-28-2013 04:02 AM

I saw this movie in the theater in 2D first, then went back to watch it in 3D. That pretty much tells you that it's a watchable film, Urban IS Judge Dredd. With that said, I found that the 3D took away from the movie. 3D scenes weren't as sharp as the 2D , and while very inspired, it still seemed gimmicky like all other 3D movies. I hate 3D and I thought this film would change my mind. It didn't. But I own it on Bluray :)

It's not common but not rare to have 2D and 3D on one disc. I know Resident Evil Afterlife is like that too.

dkeyes 01-28-2013 05:33 AM

I was surprised after renting it that it had 3D option. I really did like the 3D and it looked good. I thought the movie would be horrid due to it flopping in theaters, but it was one of the best movies I have seen in months.

This movie is deff a renter.... I wouldn't pay 20 bucks for it. personally I liked the sly version. For what its worth the effects in the newer film we're pleasing in 3d.

pretty awesome movie. too bad i missed it in theaters.

Arcticat 01-28-2013 07:09 AM

I can't believe the positive reviews of this movie! The Stallone version is a classic, this is a B- movie, looks like it was lit by someone holding a bright shop light. The main character looked, moved and spoke like he flunked out of acting school, it is the only movie that I ever sold immediately after watching it. All 6 people in the room felt the same way, the only reason we didn't shut it off was that it made you keep watching because you couldn't believe how bad it was.

ironikal 01-28-2013 07:11 AM

I'll be honest I thought the plot/story for the original was better than this version (keep in mind, I also liked the original Total Recall better than the remake with Collin Farrell); however, I did enjoy this movie as well in a ... shut-the-brain-off-and-watch-heads-pop kinda way. It felt like they just took the Judge Dredd character from the first movie, removed all higher-level cognitive functions so he's basically a machine and let him loose. That being said, the head popping? I enjoyed that...but that's pretty much as subjective as it gets.

I have no idea if they'll ever do this but if somehow they decide to do a Blu-ray double pack with the original movie and this new one with 3D and the UV code: I would gladly pay $20 for both...but that may just be wishful thinking.

Wow. "The main character" is Karl Urban of LOTR fame and is McCoy in the Star Trek reboot. I thought he did a fine job. But whatever, this price as already stated is the same as launch, and being only one disc the price isn't earthshattering by any stretch.

This is a great movie! Hope they make another one. I watched on a 47 LG passive TV and the 3D was pretty awesome. I bet on your TV it will be sick since active is full resolution! They have a drug in the movie called SLOW MO so there are scenes where they show you through the eyes of a "drug user on slow mo" and it's pretty amazing. Probably one of the better 3D movies I have seen, Avatar still being the best.

ohnims 01-28-2013 10:57 AM

This movie was better than what I had expected. Not so much so that I would own a copy, but definitely worth seeing.

I thought the original Dredd had better plot as well. Urban could have been replaced with any other actor and the movie would still be the same. The young rookie female had decent performance though. As for Total Recall, I felt it was a coin-toss. I thought the remake was really good although it tanked at box office. I prefer the remake because the original was too comical and Kate Beckensale was much better villain than Sharon Stone. If you ask me, both remake was much better sci-fi films than Prometheus. But Prometheus probably grossed 5 times Dredd and Total Recall combined.

rafaelpr 01-28-2013 04:49 PM

Add me to the list of people that weren't expecting much and thought it was pretty good. I rented it but am thinking of buying it so I can see it in 3-d.

StoreRobber 01-28-2013 05:31 PM

just saw it last night off redbox with that free monthly code.

Thought it was a low budget film and reminded me too much of robocop morphing it with that one game where they shoot zombies in buildings and morphing it with any other dinky scary movie that takes place in a hotel and the people there are infested with a virus.

When the whole movie takes place in one spot or location, it is a low budget and boring movie.

The villain is a chick? and here, I thought the rookie was going to fight the villain for a female on female combat action. Never happened. Will not watch it again. Plot is the same ol memo. We go in to flush out them druggies like any other narc's plot.

You guys really have bad taste in movies.

dkeat 01-29-2013 06:06 AM

Have my redbox rental waiting for me after work. Would love to see Redbox start to carry 3D blurays that have the 2D version on the same disc. That would probably make it more affordable and defeat the less-space-in-the-machine argument against carrying 3D.

I agree the movie was not great on any front but still enjoyed it somehow.

Its total pulp and full of plot holes but it makes a great background filler sort of thing for sat morning house cleaning time etc.

I liked the 3d but be warned its very mild and little to no gimmicky popout. That's how I like it though...

did you get the joke where the dredd says "you're the rookie, where do you think we should go?" and the girl says "three homicide calls from peach trees, let's go there."

then when they get there dredd says, "when do you think the last time a judge came to peach trees!?" rookie mistake.

or the philisophical message of that she was from the slums and she wanted to help the ppl there b/c "i grew up in the slums, they're good people just trying to make it in the world just like everyone else." I use to be apart of a buddhist temple that went into Cabrini Greens a notorious public housing building in chicago that housed drug dealers, prostitutes and leeches on society. but those dozen or so, didn't speak for the hundreds that were really "just trying to make it in the world." real world shiet.

Xriderbc 01-29-2013 08:42 PM

Isn't this version of Dredd closer to the actual comic book character vs. Stalone? (I happen to like the Stalone version too however. Campy, but fun.) Liked this one too however. Simple plot, but fun to watch. Not full of sterotypical blow em up plot devices like most mindless action flicks of late.

Briwas101 02-01-2013 03:32 AM

I just rented this from redbox and it was a pretty decent movie, 3d was good for the scenes that make sense for 3d.

I would hold off on getting it because it will be much cheaper before long.

This isnt like most 3d movies that have a special 3d edition, they only made one blu ray version and it has 2d/3d on it.

Because of this, the price will have to go down because most people dont want to pay $20 for a bluray, and the market for 2d blurays is WAY bigger than for 3d blurays.

I'll get this at gohastings in a year for $8
