Yeah, barring another price mistake, it'll be a while until it hits the $5 price point on Steam again. Not until they drop the base price to $20, and that won't happen for months.

FWIW, I bought it off GMG a month back and absolutely loved it. Favorite 3rd-person sandbox game of this generation. Better than SR3, better than GTA IV. The combat, beautiful open world and engrossing story all help create a terrific game.

I just finished this about a week ago. Make sure to download High Res DLC before you even play it and it's free. Now about the game..it starts off pretty damn awesome by showing the awe graphics and sample action events... Probably the best part is the rainy scenery.. The gameplay is a cross between Batman and GTA..which I liked both! The story was damn good too. Picking it up for $10 should be no brainer.

Nice freakin price. Just so you know though...I think all the DLC is trash. I wouldnt buy in. I dont see the point. Its a SP game...lol how many times are you going to play through to dress up your character a different way...lol. Im glad the game is good...otherwise the DLC would be even more pathetic.

Interesting. The only time I ever saw a Steam/Valve deal on the FP was recently when FTL was $4.99, but most of the time it's Amazon who gets the love. Even EA's Origin store gets FP action frequently too.

Hitman Absolution is 16.99 on Steam currently, that's the lowest price it's ever been. That should be a frontpage deal.

omnicious 01-27-2013 05:40 PM

The DLC isn't included, I suppose?

undergr3nades 01-27-2013 05:41 PM

Be careful of this game if you have an ATI radeon graphics card. This game came with my graphics card, and multiple users say they have errors on the splash screen while booting up. threads upon threads on the forums of their website but no fix.

Probably at its lowest settings, but download the demo and find out.

ctsinc 01-27-2013 05:58 PM

This is a pretty awesome game. The only draw back is it was designed for a console setup and as such the unit controls are pretty retarded. Also there is a clear lack of challenge during the FPS scenes. Still the story is pretty cool and one thing's for sure -- it's so engaging you'll be upset that there wasn't more to it. For $10 it's highly recommended; you won't be sorry.

That was a problem with the infamous cracked version being downloaded via torrents. You can still get it to work if you apply the update patch.

Because SD is now a commercialized BS site that has strayed from the original intent of the authors to bring awesome deals to the public.... and steered towards only caring about making money for themselves.

Steam is lame thats why. Their holiday sales tell the story on what direction their heading....and not to mention their customer service is horrendous compared to Amazon....people like to give money to companies who treat them right. Why give money to Steam when you can get the exact same product, for the same or lower price? Steam never gives incentives to shop with them....all they do is jack up the price....Green Man Gaming and Amazon? They love to give coupons and incentives to come back and shop with them

cwu33 01-27-2013 06:13 PM

A great game, a steal at this price. The combat system is the best, very similar to the Batman franchise if you are familiar. Worth every penny of $10, get it quick!

You do know that this is only redeemable through steam, right?
From the Amazon page...
"Steam account required for game activation and installation."
So why buy it from Amazon when you have to do more work for the same price?

pandy00 01-27-2013 06:40 PM

talk about coincidence. i came upon some guy playing the high point segment on youtube and just spent 30+ minutes watching him play through it (he had some pretty funny commentary).

the fighting looks boring and tedious but other production values look pretty high.

Of course I know this, or else I wouldn't have mentioned it....alot of customers actually WANT their games in their steam library to consolidate, instead of games scattered across 3 different services. And last time I checked, Amazon digi download client service isn't all that great either

The reason why people buy from Amazon is because they know how to treat their customers right. All holiday season last year and the year before that, they gave out $5 coupons for editors choice games....Steam? Nothing, they just kept raising the prices each holiday sale. Also Amazon actually has a REAL customer service department that you can reach immediately. Made a mistake on your digi download game order? Amazon chat will fix you up right away.....Steam, well you have to e-mail them, and it takes about a week to respond....and most likely their reply will be "sorry all sales final, we can't help you with anything, bye"....so with all that said, people want to go out of their way to buy from Amazon, and not lame Steam. Everybody who kept track of Steam winter sale 2012 knows what I'm talking about....they are going soft, simple as that...Amazon & GMG on the other hand

RyanL 01-27-2013 06:58 PM

I know a poster commented a few pages back that the DLC is worthless; is there any truth to that? I know that there is a whole bunch (I think I saw something like 21) of DLCs on Steam, are they all worthless? It'll take a while to research them all, but do any of them add anymore content, like the Zodiac Tournament, Nightmare in North Point, or Street Racer Pack?

Question about the high resolution texture pack; does it take a beast of a PC to use? Is it at least defeatable (like Crysis 2) once it's installed? I don't want to install it and then have to redownload the entire game if it doesn't work out for me.

Also, buy from and support Steam if they're the same price. That should be a no-brainer. They're going to fold if everyone stops supporting them.

Don't know what games you were looking at but I bought Bioshock 1/2 for $5 and received the $5 coupon and then bought another pack in January to use up the coupon and both purchases were for Steam. Also, a lot of people are using the $5 EC coupons on steam titles now.

Also, in terms of Amazon content, they say that all sales are final as well though they allow you to mask the Steam key until you're ready to activate. So, if you really messed up an order, perhaps you could get a refund since they know you haven't viewed the steam key.... IDK all speculation here.

I beat all the main missions in this game and I thought it was great. I picked it up when it was on steam for a ridiculous price. That being said, I probably would not spend any money on the DLC's unless you really loved the fighting system in the game. Its very much like the one implemented in batman, but I felt like batman had way more moves and gadgets as well as different types of opponents which kept the player interested. For me, I found that the fighting, while fun for a while was pretty simple and repetitive: Time the block/ parry correctly, fast attack, fast attack, slow attack combo, or something to that degree. I am way oversimplifying this but I encourage anyone on the fence to buy this and play it, then decide if the DLC's are worth it for you.

The DLC's add some more fighting tournaments, and some zombies I think..

I found the driving aspect of GTA IV to be better. Also in Sleeping Dogs, you dont get access to guns until a good few hours into the game unless you want to kill a cop and run away.

Repped and thanks for the input. I bought this game about a month ago from GMG for something like $16 or $17 (I know I should've just waited a little longer, but it seemed like such a good deal at the time) and have yet to play it. I actually planned on starting it then, but I revisited Skyrim instead and haven't stopped since (god that game sure knows how to munch up all your time). But that game is getting a bit old and way too easy now so I was going to fire this or Max Payne 3 up for the first time in the next few days. I guess I'll have to fire this up tonight to see if I actually want the DLC.

agreed. the driving in this game feels kinda off. Not like in saints row where driving feels very arcadey nor like in GTA4 where driving is pseudo realistic. Its just plain weird..

Also, this game's emphasis is not on guns i think. I just remember running around and beating people to a pulp most of the time.

They combine the best aspects of different games, the open world and 3rd person shooting of GTA, the driving of NFS, the fighting style of batman, the parkour of assassin's creed. They mix all these elements in the game VERY well. Its definitely one of the most underrated games in my book. Its my 2012 GOTA

Adaman 01-27-2013 09:11 PM

No brainier for $10, in! Thanks OP. Does the game need a high res pack? It's already pretty new.

Also it's only 7GB, a nice change of pace form Arkham City (20gb) and Max Payne 3 (30 gb) :P

youra6 01-27-2013 09:15 PM

10 bucks, its worth it- but I didn't think it was that great of a game. Predictable story all the way until the end.

snowcrash 01-27-2013 09:16 PM

Alright bought the game based on comments about Steam. It has never given me problems and in all my years of playing games on Steam since it started with Half Life 2, I have never had the need to email them. I just buy and play. Just like my PC (starting with a 386) has never given me problems with any games at all. But whatever, haters going to hate.

pubbypaws 01-27-2013 09:26 PM

definitely one of the best games i played on both the PC, and Xbox.. it doesnt get old at all.. wish there was more to the story line, and i hope they eventually release some kinda expansion pack or a second version somewhere down the line

I have to say that either you don't play many games or are blessed with a tremendous amount of luck.

Doesn't get old at all? I had to stop less than an hour in because my thumb was getting too sore. Maybe I'm just getting old. I actually wanted to stop so I could download the high res texture pack before I got really into it but seriously I couldn't see myself playing this game for more than a couple of hours straight. I was honestly hoping for a bit more gun play, but as someone mentioned you don't get to that until a few hours into it.

Just a heads up, the high resolution texture pack DLC is like another 4GB download for anyone who is getting ready to play it (just because you got the game downloaded doesn't mean you're anywhere near done yet!).

ca51580520 01-27-2013 09:44 PM

Realy good price for a real good game.

It also has DLC sidestory about zombies as well!

I wonder why that game still hasn't hit front page (I thought that maybe it was just going to take a few hours). It really does make me wonder about the front page deal selection around here lately. Maybe it is all about kick backs.

the best part is the grandma use a knife to chop the bad guy into pieces and feed his flesh to another guy . It didn't show but you easy got the idea in the game.

No, I really don't think it is though this is not the venue for this kind of discussion. Not that it's really mod-dable or ban-able talk, but rather it basically comes down to human judgment what hits frontpage and what doesn't.

Screw that, I'm never going to buy those titles. I mean, 30 GB, it better have some next-gen component going for it. Sure, games will reach that space one day, but it better have like 13.2 theater sound with 4k level resolution. Half the problem we have with some software now is that space and memory are seen as cheap and infinite which creates no incentive to actually make stuff work in an efficient manner.

Also, in terms of Amazon content, they say that all sales are final as well though they allow you to mask the Steam key until you're ready to activate. So, if you really messed up an order, perhaps you could get a refund since they know you haven't viewed the steam key.... IDK all speculation here.

I bought Need For Speed:Hot Pursuit when I'd got an EA coupon from Amazon, only to go into Steam and realizing that I had already bought it! :) A quick chat with Amazon CSR got the me the money refunded - no problems. So this is definitely not speculation. - if Amazon and Steam offer the same price, I'd go with Amazon.

Well, Arkham City is worth it. Max Payne 3 is skippable but enjoyable, and will probably start showing up for $9.99/$7.50 soon as well.

Probably wont play this for a long time; may as well sit on my hands and wait for it to hit <$5...

Totally agreed here...Batman AA/AC games are great and definitely worth it....MP3 is like a rental if you ask me....its relatively fun the first time but theres no incentive to go back and play again....and campaign is short at around 10 hours....Batman AA was around 10 hours too....and AC was about 18-ish with some side quests....but its soooo fun compared to MP3

PunkIsDead83 01-28-2013 12:34 AM

RainFall 01-28-2013 02:30 AM

I must be one of the few that felt it was overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's good enough, but one of those things where i'd wait around for the 4.99-9.99 GOTY edition. The game looks nice, but it ends up being a bunch of MMO style quests where you run around on missions that seem pointless. The cut scenes are fun, but predictable and you'd get as much or more satisfaction watching a decent Jet LI/Simon Yam HK flic. The controls while fighting massive groups became annoying and it felt repetitive. The game heavily rewards cheesy kiting and position that doesn't exist outside of video games.

koven 01-28-2013 03:19 AM

this game is well worth $10

pandastew 01-28-2013 03:21 AM

am I the only 1 seeing sleeping dog at $12.49 on steam? I want to get it as steam gift (so I can trade with it)

redsrule2500 01-28-2013 05:42 AM

great game, good price - better than GTA 4 by a longshot.

littlebuddha 01-28-2013 05:51 AM

fyi it seems that it will be one of the free games for playstation plus owners in case you have a subscription starting in feb.

burticus 01-28-2013 06:31 AM

When it hits $5 I might add it to my Steam backlog. But I kinda hate sandbox games. Just Cause 2 will never get finished at this rate...

That's a bold statement, as I loved the arcade/ridiculous feel of SR3 and I forgive the shortcomings of GTA IV for it's age (5 years; April 2008). I think I'll bite given your recommendation :D.

For those looking at the discounted DLC via Steam [steampowered.com], it seems that the consensus is most are not worth it, but I took a look at 75% off. From what I gathered:
  • Nightmare in North Point & Zodiac Tournament add an 1/2+ hours of gameplay
  • Mission quests (Triad Enforcer, Swat Pack, Street Racer, Martial Arts) are repeatable and can help max out XP
  • Police Protection Pack (also adds mission) has reports of not activating if purchased individually. No real response from Steam/Square Enix.
  • Skin/Buff Packs, XP/Money Cheat Packs [Top Dog, Red Envelope, High Roller] are not worth it. The XP/money DLC are unbalanced for first playthroughs.

Also OP's review was a worthwhile read - Insomniac's review via Steam [steamcommunity.com]. I hope the cross-post is alright.
Thanks for the post & details as always. Enjoy more rep!

If you take GTA's overall gameplay, combine it with the freeflow combat system of the newer Batman games, and set it in a beautiful modern-day Hong Kong, you have Sleeping Dogs, a game that is surprisingly my favorite 3rd-person sandbox game of this generation. The story lets you play as Wei Shen, an undercover cop who infiltrates the Sun On Yee criminal organization in an attempt to get close and help bring them down. It's a surprisingly superb tale full of deep, interesting, well-acted characters. Some of the missions (especially the later ones) can be quite intense and take you on a fun ride. The voice acting is top-notch for the most part.

The combat system is smilar to the Arkham Asylum/City games, generally hand-to-hand martial arts with counters and grappling. It's not as smooth as the Batman titles but feels great nonetheless. Special environment attacks are absurdly fun to execute and watch unfold. Some of them are especially gruesome and entertaining. The gunplay is solid and pretty satisfying but nothing to really write home about. You'll have much more fun slamming some punk's head inside a car door than shooting him in the chest.

The open world is vast, varied, and quite beautiful. Sleeping Dogs is a very impressive game from a visual standpoint and has some excellent art design. Driving the downtown city streets at night, in the rain, with the neon lights brightening the atmosphere, is just a joy to experience. The city feels so alive at times, especially when you walk through crowded market districts or deal with heavy traffic. The driving itself is on the arcade-y side, with cars and motorcycles generally handling very loosely (sometimes a bit too loose).

And when you're cruising the streets of Hong Kong, you'll enjoy a diverse collection of radio stations. Pop, hip-hop, soul, classical, electronic, metal, classic rock... you're sure to find something to your liking. Compared to the GTA games and Saints Row The Third, though, it is somewhat disappointing overall.

When you want a break from the main story, there's plenty of other stuff to do on the island: Cop missions, drug busts, car races, favors, fight clubs, gambling, even Karaoke (Wei Shen's got himself a fine set of pipes). The game offers a nice variety of fun side missions to keep you busy.

Overall, I was really impressed by Sleeping Dogs. As someone who's played GTA IV and Saint's Row The Third, I would say that Sleeping Dogs surpasses both of them. It's got an interesting story, fun combat, and gives you a huge, beautiful sandbox to explore and enjoy. Highly recommended.

If you have one to two years of game to play before getting to this, you probably can wait for the GOTY edition that include all the DLC for $10 or less.

Hey buddy, I'm glad that you seemed to enjoy my mini-review. Nice to know they can help at least a few people make a decision about a game :)

Regarding SR3 and GTA IV, I think Sleeping Dogs strikes a nice sense of balance between the two. It has the gritty and interesting story of the GTA games while still maintaining an arcade feel when it comes to combat and driving (although as mentioned up-thread, driving can feel too loose at times). Not nearly as wacky or as over-the-top as the Saints Row games but it also doesn't strive for super realistic gameplay either. It's pretty much the best of both worlds IMO.

And I really can't stress enough how terrific the environmental attacks in Sleeping Dogs are. Those moments when you impale a thug on a swordfish or drop a car engine on their head are simply magical.

bestdeal 01-28-2013 09:19 AM

I've finished all the missions, events, races, and my Triad XP got level 10 now without using any DLC.

Cool game, now eagerly waiting for GTA 5...

firebirdx01 01-28-2013 09:36 AM

good game- as many have said DLC isn't worth it. the free hi-res pack is if you have the computer to handle it- and beyond that it's like gta 4 set in HK and worth $10.

Kryspie 01-28-2013 09:45 AM

GTA 4 multiplayer is so underrated.

I'm fairly certain the Amazon version is Steam activated though I don't see it on the product webpage for some reason...anyway the high-res pack would then be via Steam. I don't know of another way to get it.

I bought it when it first came out for full price. It's such a great game! This is a killer deal.

Bought. Don't buy the amazon version.. GET STEAM! So much better

DJRobNM 01-28-2013 02:49 PM

So tempting but doesn't meet my buying criteria.

90+ metascore gets bought under $10
80+ metascore gets bought under $5

I have 183 games on Steam and I have finished maybe a handful.

I have serious game buying issues.

Sleeping Dogs requires Steam no matter what. If you buy from Amazon, you have to punch the code into your Steam library anyway....so I'm not sure what you're talking about?

FWIW, I bought it off GMG a month back and absolutely loved it. Favorite 3rd-person sandbox game of this generation. Better than SR3, better than GTA IV. The combat, beautiful open world and engrossing story all help create a terrific game.

Is the DLC worth waiting for a Game of the Year package or something? Or should I just buy it without the DLC and not worry about getting the DLC at all?

Human judgment determines what goes to front page? Sorry but I have to call BS on that. Just like the thread/deal that I mentioned (Hitman), the Steam one should've hit front page first because it had more thumbs up when I checked last night (the Amazon one had 4 while the Steam had 13 thumbs up). They even had the Amazon one in the Popular Deals (by votes) margin last night before I went to sleep with only 4 votes. How is 4 more than 13? Sure, the steam deal is mentioned in the first post now that the Amazon one is front page and there's a link, but I'm sure that Amazon got the brunt of the orders. Just as another recent example (this is a real good one too); there was a crappy $5/25 Home Depot deal where you had jump through a bunch of hoops for PayPal just to get it to work (never worked for me BTW). Meanwhile behind the facade there was a much better coupon for $50 off of $100 with 100% success rate. That thread had many more thumbs up and replies posted, but never once hit front page. The only explanation I have is Paypal had slickdeals in their pocket.

If you PM the CEO of Slickdeals, he'll tell you the same thing. Like I said, we can talk about it and they won't ban us for it and probably won't delete the comments, but the front page is 100% subjective to what the FP mods want to put on there.

I use Windows Media Center and a TV tuner for my DVR. I noticed on my laptop steam has this big picture thing. Wow! It is now on my TV PC. It lets you you go through your controller supported game catalog with the Xbox controller. You can hop in and out of games too. Graphics are better with the 6870 versus the 360m in the laptop. Just something to mention if you have a wired controller or wireless dongle.

Quick impression about the DLC for those still wondering:

Nightmare in North Point & Zodiac Tournament are worth it *if* you want more hand-to-hand combat, *if* you like quirky Asian pop culture humor and *if* they are 75% off or more. Both DLCs take about an hour to complete, and about 1.5 hours if you're going to trophies and costumes.

Nightmare spoofs Asian horror films and Smiley Cat and a ghost friend are the highlights. Also drinking a ghost tea that gives you fire fists is kinda cool. Zodiac is pure hand-to-hand combat and pays homage to "Enter the Dragon." It's has fun nods to the movie but gets repetitive.
