This kindle first generation CAN be rooted to custom rom. Thus can be used as any other lcd android tablet.

New 2nd gen + kindle generation, such as Kindle Fire CAN be rooted but NO CUSTOM rom (amazon locked it out), thus limited in ability to run generic android applications & tied strongly to amazon eco system. Second generation Kindle Fire may have better hardware (sound, speed, screen) but much more limit in available apps, and more expensive too :P

What a heated debate; Link to 1st gen kindle fire: rooting and custom roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1309

Definitely! My sister watches netflix and pretty used it for a browser in addition to a reader.

I mostly use mine for twitter, games and presentations.

Yes! I have one. I rooted it and flashed CM10.1 (Latest Jelly Bean ROM) and it effortlessly plays games and Netflix.

xxxHolic 01-28-2013 12:15 PM

Only it had 16GB.

namlook 01-28-2013 12:17 PM

Recycle fee and tax takes it up to $98+ for CA. That took the fun out of it for me.

Does Discover have a direct link to Best Buy Clearance? If not, then no. This looks to be a Best Buy website, but unaffiliated. You can't use your bestbuy.com login.

I tend to use www.cashbackmonitor.com and I don't see any links from them either.

I wonder if you can use reward zone certificates (from daily BB polls) on this :P

kcora 01-28-2013 12:41 PM

Kindle Fire - these are mainly for web browsing, right?
I use my eReader (currently Nook) for sitting outside in the sunshine to read. Can't do that with these displays. Please correct me if I am wrong, this looks like a great deal!!

dimjim 01-28-2013 12:49 PM

looks like a bit cheaper than ebay prices, but when you figure in tax with BB (most states), you're probably saving a few bucks.

Has anyone ever bought something "Geek Squad Refurb" before?

Your Nook eReader uses the eInk, which allows it to look like paper. Hence why you can see it in the sunlight easily, just like a standard paperback.

These tablets are LCDs, like your cell phone display. It should be readable in the sunlight, but nowhere near as good as your eReader.

Thanks for the info. This still seems like a great deal & shows available at all the Best Buys in my area. Better price than getting a normal eReader.

This kindle first generation CAN be rooted to custom rom. Thus can be used as any other android tablet.

Future kindle generation, such as Kindle Fire CAN be rooted but NO CUSTOM rom, thus limited in ability to run generic android applications. Its eco system is tied down to amazon. Kindle Fire 2nd gen may have better hardware (sound, speed, screen) but limited in running available android applications.

Personally, I prefer first generation, since it's more flexible, and run more application.

Does it comes with cable charger?

xtrabad 01-28-2013 01:37 PM

Note this is the 1st Generation Kindle Fire. Title already states this, but I'm pointing it out again to those who, like myself, typically pull the trigger quickly and then read the details later.
I would personally pass on this and opt for a Gen 2 Fire on Craigslist or Fleabay before buying a Gen1 refurb. Just my opinion...

sleepybubba 01-28-2013 01:39 PM

Meh, got two of these new in the box from Staples for $96.50

NajibH 01-28-2013 01:50 PM

I have this one, bought it for $135 from amazon for my mom around a year ago. She didn't like it (or any other tablet, lol) so i ended up using it. Its a decent tablet. Handles websites fairly well, it's responsive and you can root it very easily.
For this price you cant go wrong.

Btw, this is way better than those cheapo sub $100 dollars tablets out there.

sdbp 01-28-2013 02:12 PM

If anyone is actually able to do this deal please let me know. I've placed three orders now and all were confirmed and then cancelled. Made three calls to customer service. First two calls got a song and dance about not being able to verify some unknown piece of address or CC info. Used paypal for the third order. 10 minutes later got a refund. Made another call and finally got some truth. Rep finally confessed that these aren't available to be shipped to store and she didn't see that any were available in-store anywhere in CT.

insyder 01-28-2013 02:16 PM

I do have to add that this will be noticeably sluggish when browsing or watching, as compared to a nexus or an ipad mini. Not that they are in the same category, just giving you an idea. Not a lot of apps out there for it either, so keep that in mind.

shystalips 01-28-2013 02:19 PM

I think gamestop TIV is still $99 on this, if anyone's interested

I've heard about "rooting" devices but I'm not certain why I'd want to do this -- I'm a bit nervous about fiddling the software. What do you miss out on if you don't root it? Isn't there still plenty you can do with it as is?

deymayor 01-28-2013 02:32 PM

nook tablet 16gb with expansion can be had for the same price. this is a good deal but nook is much better. ebay has been selling for around this much, some probably in better shape.

I haven't rooted mine cuz I dont need it xD
But I know its very easy, several guides on google.

I rooted my phone cuz I wanted free hot spot :P

It depends, if you are happy with the apps in the amazon store, then you wont need rooting at all. I just use mine for using the web browser and reading books I download from torrents, lol.

Hope this helps.

No, there is no card slot, just the basic tablet.

As for those talking about rooting it, depends what your needs are. There are far more apps nowadays than there were when I first got mine (day it came out).

Are there other choices out there, you bet. My 6 yr old niece has been using mine since I got it and found it intuitive. Great for kids and there are ways to lock things down, although I haven't had to do that (yet).

I have rooted a few android smartphones and tablet. All of them have procedure to reverse it back to stock. I'm not sure of specifics preloaded amazon apps, but I'm guessing that it'll be available via amazon store or google play store or executable apk. At worst case, you can always reverse it back to stock.

original amazon kindle has big following in xda, which is good because rooted device with custom roms will have a lot more options, flexibility and upgradable to more recent android version.

If you only want to read books, a smaller subset of games, amazon prime, surf internet, then rooting is not necessary. If you want to use it as a tablet, with more game variety, task, scheduler, consolidated email in scrollable form....etc, then rooting with custom rom is recommended. This is my personal opinion...

I had a bad experience with mine trying to stream Netflix when I had one. I gave it to my mom a long while back. Its possible its gotten better with OS and App updates though. For everything else it was great. I love the size. I would be tempted to get one again just to install all the free daily apps I have gotten from Amazon...

Ben61694 01-29-2013 12:57 AM

I've owned a Geek Squad Refurb iPod Touch and it literally felt like a cheap knockoff. GS certified isn't something I'd rely on, especially since they only give you a 90 day warranty. It's a great deal though, but buy at your own risk.

Thanks but no thanks.

Where did you obtain an iPad 5 for $85 to do your unbiased comparison? Speaking of inferior products, you bought a NEW iPad5 when it gets trumped by older existing tablets for less (eg. Asus TF700)? If you're talking about the iPad Mini since the iPad5 isn't released yet, then the TF300 still beats it in a straight up hardware comparison. I'm sure you know exactly what you're talking about though, so carry on. Pretty sure being what you call "poor" is better than being ignorant.

I would pass on the Playbook. I own one and am not generally a fan of the browser; it tends to be somewhat unstable with more than, say 2-3 tabs open. It's not absolutely terrible, but the second time in a sitting that the browser crashes on you and then doesn't recover the session... frustrating. On the plus side, it does play flash content well.

Strangely, I have actually kept the device (in a drawer), because:
1. It just feels incredibly well-built for a tablet in its price-range (or, honestly, any tablet) and
2. With the new Blackberry 10 devices coming out shortly, I imagine the impending OS update will provide some niceties.

The amazon tablet sounds like the way to go for the price. Even if you're only using it for browsing now, if you ever think you might want to download some hot new app... You can be nearly certain that it won't be available for the playbook. At least there's a chance it'll be usable on the kindle (or rooted kindle).

I recently traded the original Kindle Fire in to Gamestop and traded up for the new HD version. If you have the ability to upgrade to the HD, do it. The differences in quality, viewing angles, and overall experience is astronomically different and worth it.

The one thing I did love about the original kindle, however, is that my less than 2 year old nephew could ruff and tumble the crap out of it and it survived unscathed.

What was the cost difference to upgrade thru Gamestop. Bought my fire Nov 11 during the price match to target so paid 119 for it

TechTrend 01-29-2013 05:56 AM

Out of stock in all stores in Central Florida.

FoxInSocks 01-29-2013 06:01 AM

Bummer, I was hoping to pick one up for my son going into high school next year but all around me are out of stock. I bought a refurb last year from Amazon for about $50 more than this (a slick deal, at the time also) and I love it! I haven't rooted or modified mine other than to install a couple of apps directly via the APK (and a web search will yield plenty of advice on how to do all sorts of things to make your Fire work better for you).

Use it for Netflix, web browsing, and of course reading. I kind of hate it for email - maybe it's the way their email app works with gmail - it's just clunky and is OK for reading but not much else IMHO.

If you have been thinking about getting a tablet like this, I say jump on it! Especially if the return policy is 30 days as some have pointed out. Give yourself a month to decide if you like it - I really think for $85 plus tax you can't go wrong.

killdiablo 01-29-2013 06:08 AM

1st & Refurbished. No thank you.

snypa2k8 01-29-2013 06:17 AM

While the kindle fire is decent for the price (I mean comon, a tablet with these specs for under a $100), the deal breaker is the charger port. My kids have been though 6 kindles all because the USB charge port stops working after a while. In order to get it to charge you need to prop the cord at a certain angle, and over time that doesn't even work anymore. I would stay far away from these honestly

MasterCrackle 01-29-2013 06:46 AM

Hmm.. So no shipping options. I was about to get it until I realized it's pickup only and only if your store has it! Lame..

Its not illegal to root a device. It is now illegal to "unlock" a phone for use with other carriers.

As for the 1st Generation Kindle Fire....... I'm running 4.2 Jelly Bean on mine with NO issues what so ever. As a matter of fact, I haven't TOUCHED my iPad 2 since rooting my Kindroid Fire. :)

Is this a guaranteed price for all locations or just some? I actually have a first gen kindle fire that is just sitting around.

The info in the wiki is incorrect and/or outdated. There are a few custom ROMs available for the newer Kindle Fire (aka: Kindle Fire 2) but they have just been released over the past couple of weeks. So, I would hazard a guess that the ROM development for the original Kindle Fire is much more perfected.

As for the 1st Generation Kindle Fire....... I'm running 4.2 Jelly Bean on mine with NO issues what so ever. As a matter of fact, I haven't TOUCHED my iPad 2 since rooting my Kindroid Fire. :)

You are contradicting the mass majority of the news media. I feel like their interpretation is more accurate.

First, it’s still completely legal to jailbreak and root your phone (but not tablets, mind you), and that law will stand through at least 2015. However, unlocking your phone yourself is illegal as everyone says it is, but the EFF note that carriers “probably aren’t going to start suing customers en masse, RIAA-style.”

I was under the impression that only had to do with carrier unlocking cell phones, and that it'll be about a month before that gets overturned because its stupid.

Now why would you get one of these vs a nook tablet for about the same price? More ram, runs a slew of jellybean roms, and I don't think this has anything the NT doesnt have.

None available in the Charlotte NC area.

I own this Kindle Fire first gen. There are many custom roms available. It's handy for simple surfing, email, android games for my kids.

How is the email system? Is it like Apple's where it is all in one? I need a new device to replace my iPad, a cheaper one, I just got a laptop which can replace my iPad, but I enjoy the email system of all my 4 emails that update together.

I am talking about Stock Amazon Rom. I have already used a couple of Android version, they work, but not as smooth as iOS, which can be laggy and slow sometimes.

cheapee 01-29-2013 03:51 PM

I only browse through my emails on a single account on my fire. So I do not reply much through the device. It works fine for my needs. Original amazon firmware. I have used the apple ipad 1 email before as well. I have not depended on these devices for heavy email use. I switch to a laptop.
I don't think either one of them is better than the other.

For those who ordered, check your status. Ordered mine very early. Without any notice, the order status is now "cancelled".

Made another call and finally got some truth. Rep finally confessed that these aren't available to be shipped to store and she didn't see that any were available in-store anywhere in CT.

I have same experience where my orders got cancelled WITHOUT ANY NOTICE. Called rep, and got case number, she said payment went through, but order still got cancelled. Her exact wordings: "it states that we were unable to verify your information. " ... BUT they don't tell you exactly which information failed verification...

update: using power of google, similiar experience: http://forums.bestbuy.com/t5/Best...rue#M34536 ... with the exact wordings of "it states that we were unable to verify your information. "...

Ordered several hours after the deal was posted and the next morning they sent me a tracking number of it to the store. The website says the order is still "processsing" so I don't know what's up with that. Strangely, I finally received my confirmation email a few hours after getting the shipping info.

Wasn't able to order earlier today as it said unavailable for delivery anywhere in my region.
Decided to click through again tonight and shows available for pickup 2/5.
Coupon code failed, but a quick google turns up a 16% code today 'BETRUE16' in their progressive valentines day coupon code promotion.
Figured it's worth a shot.

For what it's worth, picked one up for the wife for christmas in the last sale and I might have got lucky but there were no signs of use other than the charging cable having the twist tie removed.

Put the 16% off code in Wiki. Thanks!!

My two kindle fire are at the store now but the email said the store is getting them ready. What does it mean? Does it mean the tablets will get checked and refurbished in the store before I can pick them up?

I found out they have different coupon code for each day until 2/8, and the discount gets bigger every day. Today is 16% off and tomorrow is 17% off, etc. 2/8 will have 25% off code.

Wow. Can these be returned for a full refund if we do it when we go to collect? Meaning, if I can still get one when the 25% discount is on, I'd re-buy and just get a refund on the one I already ordered, I could just not even collect the first one until the 2nd one is in and get a refund on the first.

Back in stock in Southern California. Ordered one. Will wait to see if these are still around when the 25% coupon kicks in. I doubt it. Nice tablet for the price, considering the benefits of the owners library for Prime members.

Thanks OP!

pippypoppy 01-31-2013 09:18 AM

Anyone know how long it takes to ship to store? I got the message a couple of days ago mine was on the way to a store, and I'm hoping it really exists (based on how some people's orders were cancelled).

PatriccioI 01-31-2013 11:40 AM

I ordered one this morning/late last night (11pm~12am Pacific Time) and it went through. I checked and it said it was in stock for my local Best Buys (San Jose, CA). Received a confirmation email and ETA to be picked up at store is this Saturday. Nothing's been canceled yet so it's looking pretty good. Thank you OP. May hell claim you California for the ridiculous recycle tax.

You might want to check out what's available in the lender's library if that's the only reason you'd get the Kindle Fire. There is maybe a handful of interesting things on there (for me, anyhow). It's largely romance novels, which isn't my bag. There are sometimes good books on the Kindle Daily Deal for $1.99, though, and once in awhile something good for free. And I'm assuming you already have Amazon Prime? Because the Prime that comes with the Kindle is just a one-month trial, so that in itself also isn't a reason to get it.

If you already have nexus 7, it would be a waste to get this. I purchased the kindle fire first then Nexus 7 and all it does now is a sitting in the corner of my desk.

Sorry, should have mentioned I'd also be getting it for my girlfriend to use as well. But I think I'll pass still, looked at the specs and didn't realize how lacking it actually was.

pippypoppy 01-31-2013 04:35 PM

Just realized there was a tracking number in the email they sent me which has different info than what is on the Best Buy website. Tracking shows that UPS will deliver my kindle to the store by the end of the day tomorrow! Hopefully that means it's really coming, lol.

They have this in stock for $129 now. Let me add to cart and begin checkout only to then discover it wasn't available in my area. Grr. Shouldn't it have you put in your zip code before you add to cart to check availability? And if they offer it online, shouldn't they give you a shipping option?
