The 640U is $1598 at walmart. Price says $1998.00 on website, but check local ad tab. I confirmed earlier in store and it is the 640 not the 600.

More info here http://www.amazon.com/Sharp-LC70L...B0076LY2BY

Appears this is ymmv as some are getting the 600 and others the 640

SS! What are you talking about, did you click the local ad on website?

RyanL 01-28-2013 02:42 PM

Looks like not all stores have this (despite having it in their weekly circular). Very solid price for those who can get this. The reviews seem very positive.

methcat 01-28-2013 03:01 PM

i do see 1598, doesn't specify model on the ad tho... would be a good deal for 640

drdiaboloco 01-28-2013 03:11 PM

Bummer about the sales tax, but even with it included it appears to be the best deal around on this set.

Wish the model was listed to price match at Costco for the extra year of warranty. Guess Amex extended warranty is an option.

mobius8 01-28-2013 03:26 PM

Don't guess Amazon would PM this would they?

Donald05 01-28-2013 03:32 PM

Bestbuy has the 60" sharp on for $855 120hz

trader14 01-28-2013 03:34 PM

which would you get - this one for $1600 or the vizio 70" from costco for $1500?

methcat 01-28-2013 03:36 PM

if it's the 640, the 640, if not it's prob a wash or the vizio

me2sd 01-28-2013 03:36 PM

I own a sharp for 5 yrs and I will buy this now..

Frankentots 01-28-2013 03:47 PM

Got a 60" right now. Ugh what my wife wouldn't give for an extra 10 inches. I really hope she doesn't see this.

I'll bet.

Surely this is for the 600 though, as that matches the deal for that from the other sites.

From what I heard at the local WM, the price should be for the 600U model. Consider this likely a very YMMV deal. It will likely depend on if the employee is paying attention, if he/she cares at all.

Soap opera effect? My brother has a 70" sharp from costco and it's HORRIBLE watching movies on it. Maybe there is a setting, but I don't like the feeling I'm watching SNL everytime I see a movie.

SCDallas 01-28-2013 05:17 PM

How is 3.5 inches considered slim? Nice TV though!

I've seen this comment many times now. I don't understand why people think a tv that is a few inches thick is "too thick" or "not slim enough".

Maybe someone can explain the logic. Does that extra inch or so really make your room feel cramped? I know that some other people prefer to hang these on the wall, but does that extra bit of thickness protruding from your wall really make a difference. We're not talking about a smartphone that you carry in your pocket.

I've had the Sharp LC60E78UN (60") for a couple years now and I couldn't be happier about the purchase. It's probably 3.5"-4" deep and sits on a stand that is about 10" deep. You wouldn't know the difference if it was 1" thick or 6" thick. Plus, the picture is EXCELLENT. Which by the way, is most important to me. My next purchase will more than likely be another Sharp.

SSEiYah 01-28-2013 05:52 PM

My 60" sharp 120hz LCD has been pretty good, I think it is a LC60E78UN. It was roughly the same price as the 70" but that was a couple years ago, maybe late 2011, I dont remember. Either way, a bit of backlight bleed, but good for the price.

Huge waste of money for the Samsung which was $1000 more at the time, pretty much same image quality.

I've always paid the premium for Samsung/Sony TVs, but will stick with the "cheap+quality" brands from now on.

There is most certainly a setting for that. Tell your brother to adjust the Fine Motion, Film Mode, and Digital Noise reduction settings. I too hate the Soap Opera effect. You can completely eliminate it with these settings adjustments. You can even create a custom user mode just for certain viewings, such as movies, sports, etc. I believe that 99% of tv's have this custom option.

I thought this was relegated to Samsung TVs with that TruMotion garbage.

IRPILOT 01-28-2013 06:00 PM

This is for the 600 series Sharp. I just bought it thinking they just sold the 640 and after coming home and reading the thread I went and looked on the box and it is the 600. Looks like its going back tomorrow.

NCBuckeye 01-28-2013 06:01 PM

I just went to my local Walmart and the employee said it was $1598 just like the add said. The key is if best buy will price match to get the rewards coupons and no interest for 24 months. Rather use someone else's money than my own at 0%

Disable 120Hz interpolation (smoothing effects done by the TV). Or just set it to 60Hz mode.

That's all TVs with 120/240Hz. I've never heard of it being undefeatable, but every brand calls it something different. For example it's called "Motionflow" on my Sony.

inprogress2 01-28-2013 06:19 PM

I have them holding a 640 for me but it will be a little to big for my fireplace. I thought my hunt was over guess I'm still looking fora 65 or 60. I will add ymmv to the title as it aappears this depends on how tv smart the salesperson is

I confirmed earlier in store and it is the 640 not the 600.

How did you confirm this? The add has no mention of model #, just brand and size. Did they have this on display somewhere with the sale price listed? I could see this turning into a bit of a YMMV type of a deal. Maybe your store made a mistake on the model because they sent another guy in this thread home with a 600. I could really see this as being a nightmare to price match also.

Bc they brought one out for me to purchase in the box w the model number. I add ymmv to title

dasanii19 01-28-2013 06:32 PM

So can you guys tell me the perfect scenario to get walmart to sell this to me for the $1598 price? I walk in pick out the tv, they ring it up for 2228,00 and that's when I show them the ad? Will I need a manager to over ride the price? Still confused on how to get the price, I'm willing to try just need a clear idea on how to do it.

IRPILOT 01-28-2013 06:38 PM

I was wrong. The 640 series and 600 series are both on clearance for 1598. I had to go to 4 walmarts to finally get on but I finally got it. Great tv. Thanks op

I went in and asked the model number of the discounted tv on the flier and they come back and told me. They rang it up and adjusted price.

The way that I look at it is the ball is kind of in your court. I mean there's no mention of model # in the add so you could always argue which model # you think it should be. Another option you have is to go to a store that doesn't have any 600s in stock, just 640s as a way to ensure you get a 640. I kind of wonder how many stores actually have Sharp 70" TVs, and 640s no less. I've never known Walmart to have variety when it comes to stuff like that. Maybe this whole thing is a fluke of sorts.

Already have 125" projector and 70 is just overkill for that room, trust me I really want to make it work . They are holding it for me to pick up in the morning though

Can't be worse than my old 50" 1366x768 plasma, and I find it perfectly acceptable from 12ft away as far as pixel size.

Found this site: http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html
It's actually 69.5", so 31.7 PPI.
My 50" plasma is 31.34 PPI.
Works for me!

I really want to buy it if it's a 640U. Probably will pass if it's a 600U.
Only problem is I don't think Wal-Mart delivers. Anyone ever tried transporting a TV like this laying flat in the bed of a pickup? Sharp cautions due to size of the panel, it has to be transported vertically, but I can't think of a way to do that. It would be a 6-mile trip if the closest WM has one.

It is model# LC-70LE732U, at least at the store I went to in the Port Arthur, TX. The display model still showed a "Roll Back" price of $2,298. Sorry did not get a picture of display.

Anyway I grabbed an ad when I walked in, ask someone in electronics and they said they yes it was the one on display and had 4 of them in the back, they have not changed the price on the display yet.

I questioned the Model# and he said models may vary from store to store depending on which warehouse they are getting their inventory from.

I know it is an older model, but I picked one up anyway for a friend that has been looking for a 70'' for a couple a weeks now. I think she will be happy with it.

SNESimon 01-29-2013 12:11 AM

I got the 640 at my WM. Got it hooked up to my Xbox 360 and cable box. Looks great so far but I'm afraid it may be too big for my room. My head is only 9' away from the TV. I never thought I'd say this, but it may be too big. Anyway, make sure you set the viewing mode to "Game" when playing your consoles because if you don't the input lag is pretty bad.

BTW what is the difference between the 600 and 640?

We called the Mill Plain, 192nd, and Hazel Dell walmart as well and they all confirmed that they were selling the 640, not the 600.

I had no problem laying the LC-70LE732U, which is the one I received, flat in between the wheel wells of a short bed full size Chevrolet crew cab. Could not close the tail gate though.

jxl92182 01-29-2013 07:47 AM

No go in the 1960 Houston location by Walters. Lady told me there is only 1 and sold last night. Model is not the 640 (640 was the only one on display).

I spend 10 minutes sitting there looking at the screen. It is not that big, but they were showing some sort of football preview and i notice quite a bit of SNOW and delay compared to the TVs next to them. I guess you can probably adjust this, but it really scared me quite a bit about the quality of this thing and I probably not going to get this anymore. I will wait it out for my Panasonic 60 plasma.

Ah, yep. New models will be out in March it's gonna be tough to get into deals like this for many.

[QUOTE=GnatGoSplat;57211150]Thanks, that gives me a bit more confident it could survive the trip. Did you put the LCD facing up or down?

I am not sure, have not taken it out of the box and I am not with it at the moment. I can tell you that the picture attached, that side was face up. It may be the same picture on the other side. I only had about 4 miles to drive, so I was not concerned, did not even strap it down.
Something I may pay a little more attention to when I bring it to my friend's house, for whom I got it for, who lives about an hour away from me.

Jenghun 01-29-2013 08:59 AM

Never had a problem with any of my Sharp tvs. I have a 5 year old 46" LCD and a 1.5 year old 60" LED that both work perfectly. This is a great price for a great tv, I'd jump all over this one if I needed another.

Hi, can you tell me the actual dimension of the unboxed item. I wanted to see if it will be able to fit in my mini-van

thanks

Ah, so you haven't tried it yet. I'll be interested to know how it makes out once you get it to its destination.

Great find. Thanks OP!

Have not opened the box, but the box dims of the LC-70LE732U are approximately 44'' X 70'' X 11''.

asrman 01-29-2013 11:02 AM

Has anyone been able to put one in a minivan? The closest store that has in stock is 35 miles away :(

vegasjetskier 01-29-2013 11:14 AM

Bought one at the Fernandina Beach, FL Walmart Store. It would not fit in the back of the PT Cruiser so I had to go home and get the trailer. I think it would probably fit in the back of a regular minivan. It is the 640U, which had a regular store price of $2298.

Yeah, might strap it down upright for it's trip, this thing is huge, might be like a sail going down the road.

Definitely risking breaking the screen if carried flat. Glass is too big/fragile. The set is just suspended inside the carton. There's no support for the screen inside.

I went and looked at the TV and I was not that impressed. I realize in the store especially at Walmart it's not the best place to view a TV, but I guess it's just not for me. Good luck to everyone that can get one.

You can never judge a TV based on the store display. All TV set to a special "torch" mode to make picture brightest and most colorful under harsh store lighting. 640 has a great picture once properly calibrated.

Went with a friend to Sam's this past weekend to have her take a look at 70'' Vizio that was on sale for $1548, but they also had the 70'' Sharp 640U for $1988. The Sharp had it beat, she liked Sharp so much better that she was going to buy it on the spot, even though it was $450 more. I talked her out it to see if I could find a better deal. Glad I did.
Not to knock Vizio, but at equal price, hands down, I will take the Sharp.

Yeah, I'm real concerned about that, but I can't think of any way to transport it vertically. If I try to use straps to keep it vertical, it's almost guaranteed to break if it tips over.

For years, I was actually leery of LCD technology altogether because every single one always looks like oversaturated crap in the store compared to plasma. However, one year I finally broke down and bought a Sony LCD and it looks fantastic at home. I've heard LCDs typically look much worse in the store. I guess salespeople think when a display is unrealistically oversaturated, people like it better.

Where did you see that? I haven't seen anyplace where the Vizio got better reviews, but many where reviewers said the Sharp is much better. I posted links to a few reviews saying just that in the Vizio thread and one person posted his personal experience.

asrman 01-29-2013 02:17 PM

Confirmed in buda tx Walmart. Rings up correct and they have 3 more in stock as of 4:15 pm cst.none were found on austin , now waiting for.my rental truck to arrive.

GnatGoSplat 01-29-2013 02:27 PM

Best Buy has them in stock, but unfortunately, the local Wal-Marts are now showing no stock with which to PM. That is, assuming the Wal-Mart website inventory checker is accurate.

ArmchairQB 01-29-2013 02:47 PM

Frak. called and reserved the LC70LE640U sent my driver to pick it up and they gave him the 600. Grrr

droyder 01-29-2013 03:31 PM

All of these 70" Sharp panels are just absolute mass-produced garbage with horrible picture quality and no reliability, avoid them at all costs.

shasta_steve 01-29-2013 03:52 PM

Thanks for the find. I had to go to a walmart about 20 miles away but they had 3 in stock in West Sacramento a couple of hours ago. They had them listed for $2200 on sale in the store. I asked about the sale they had on them and they told me it did not apply on the 640 but when they scanned the tv it came up $1599. I grabbed one right away. If anyone is in the area they never did put the sales price up so it is possible they are still there.

This may not be the greatest tv out there but I just put it up downstairs and the picture quality is pretty damn good. I put Hugo on off of Netfilx and that looks great also. The sound is not great but I did not expect it to be. Still good for most things. I am very happy with mine so far but have only had it up for an hour or so. Can't beat the price, especially for the 640.

t_s 01-29-2013 04:33 PM

Target Store price match it.
Two of the local Walmart is out. Bestbuy online is out. Amazon is out. So I took the Walmart ad and went to the Target. TV desk didn't price match it. Go to the CS counter and speak to a store manager and price match without any problem. Get an 640U plus three years services for another $100! I compare the picture quality with Vizio 70" side by side in Costco, believe Sharp's is better.
My 2cs

Yes, Vizio's remain the best bang-for-your-buck set and getting one through Costco extends the warranty 3 years if you use your AMEX.

OOS at 5 of my local Wal-Marts. I sure hope some other place will offer it on sale, preferably a place that can deliver. After the Super Bowl, there probably won't be another sale on 70-inchers until BF. :(

Wish they would go into specifics on why the Sharp is a better performer. I got the Vizio on Black Friday, so it was a pretty good deal, but I came from a Kuro, so the picture quality difference is noticeable.

Not sure where you are in Socal but Fontana and San Bernardino both show some in stock. Up here around Sacramento several still have them in stock too.

We're not talking about a smartphone that you carry in your pocket.

It does. I am looking to hang this over a fireplace mantle. The ~1+" from the slim mount + 3.5 inches means that this will sit ~5 inches from the wall, which is a substantial fraction of the mantle. Knocking 2-3" off that by going with a true "slim" tv makes a huge aesthetic difference.

I contacted those stores (fontana/san bern) earlier today because i noticed them having stock as well, when i talked with the electronics dept. they told me they haven't had stock for the past 2 days on those items. Seems to me the stocklists are not accurate on the walmart site.

plaz 01-30-2013 05:44 AM

I just snagged that last one at my local WM

I went early this morning and the actual store mgr helped me with the purchase. He kept going on and on about $1998 being such a great deal on this. I said just wait till you ring it up. His look was priceless as it rang up at $1598

Glad I was able to find one!

redhot 01-30-2013 05:50 AM

Got one
Walmart had one left 640u model and it scanned 1598 at the register.

Now calibrating the settings- which is the best feature of 640 model compared to 600 model.

Avs forums provide settings to get a picture to match the best Samsung or any high end model.

I know right. I would love a 70''er but i got my 60'' vizio for $800 after 5 year warranty. This would literally cost double!! I would jump if i see a 65''er for $949 on amazon

They should adjust it. At my store, the online price showed $1998, when I was at the store last night, it was priced at $2398.00 (sticker price), however when they scanned the actual box of the TV it showed up at $1598. Initially they did tell me that the price was $2398 but when I pointed out the price on the flyer and the fact they have no other 70" Sharps at the store, there wasn't any room for arguement. :bounce: And this was for the 640U.

b00dah 01-30-2013 08:36 AM

What timing! I was in my local Best Buy buying the LC70LE600 for $1599. I had to be ordered so I processed the order and walked out to the car. Just then I got an SD alert about the 640. I promptly walked in and cancelled that order. (The BB salesman huffed and didn't believe me). I called my local Walmart and the guy says "Sorry I JUST sold my only one". Then said, we have the display model left. I asked if he's sell it at a discount to which he said sure. "I'll knock off $200"... ok, so what could possibly be wrong?... so I'll bite.

I head over, look at it, and it's not on, just on a display shelf. Just a little dusty from what I can see so I buy it after looking it over. Got it home and found that it was a nice buy for $1398. Later that night I notice there aren't any "WiFi" options... after closer examination, I see it's NOT the 640... it's a LC70LE600! WTH?! Even the WalMart Sales poster attached said LC70LE640 (Yeah, my fault for not REALLY looking close enough but I was pissed nonetheless). Next morning at 7am I'm out to the only the other Walmart in my area that actually has a 640 left and explain the situation to the guy there. They take the unit from my truck and give me a new in box 640u as even exchange. *dead stare for a split second* So I leave... promptly. Talk about a SLICK Deal.

I am not sure that they would. On Walmart's website they say they will not price match online and in store prices. That being said you could ask when you go pick it up and if they will not do it just return it. Then most likely you could just buy it outright then. I guess it would depend on how bad you pissed them off as to if they would actually sell it to you at the sale price. The key thing here is to always try and be nice. Walmart employees have to deal with lots of idiots and I have found if you are friendly they will usually go out of their way to help you out.

I had the same thing happen to me when I went to the store to buy mine. It was actually on sale for $2198, which was higher than the online price even. I asked about the sale price and was told that they wold not sell it to me for $1598 but then I pulled out the store ad on my phone. The guy went up and scanned it and it came up for $1598.

I told him that I would buy it but had to go home to get my truck. I was told that they were not supposed to hold the tv for me. He wanted me to go home and then come back and pay for it. They guy was really nice but I could see he was excited about the price too and I was afraid that by the time I got back they would be all gone. My wife volunteered to stay at the store for the hour or so it took me to get back and they were good with that.

Take it out of the box. Have ample pillows, padding etc. Driver her home... gently of course.

My mini-suv (Mitsubishi Outlander) had a hatch width of 43"
The TV is approx 41" wide with pedestal stand attached. Subtract 2" if it's off. It should be fine in your SUV if you've got at least 42" of hatch width.

I was able to get it into an SUV with the back seats down and the front seats pushed forward it fit perfectly in the back. If you can't get it in your SUV, check out your local Home Dept and see if they have a rent a truck which I am thinking would probably be cheaper than U-Haul.

There were only 2 of these in a single store in the entire Boise area. I asked a semi-conscious employee why they would advertise the TV only to have none in stock. They replied that the larger TV's don't sell as often, so they are sporadically ordered...regardless of whether it is a sale item in an advertisement.
They had no clue whether any more would be ordered.

I was able to grab one of the 2 in stock...thanks OP!

LED LCD and LCD are the same thing. The only difference is that the standard ones are backlit by fluorescent lighting while the LED ones use LEDs for backlighting.

I went ahead and got a u-haul actually. It will cost about $60 with gas and mileage. But I figured it would be safer to drive the thing in a van then the open-bed home-depot truck.

By the way, the two stores nearby told me they had one in stock. They were both for 600U. Bastards. After I rented the truck and showed up I did not want to go back empty handed so I bought the 600U, after some compaining I got $100 discount. I did not care about the intelligence of the TV much so I guess I am somewhat happy about the deal other thatn the whole bait and switch aspect!

Yep, great minds think alike, just did that. My new SUV mileage is as good as my old sedan's mileage, so I don't complain ;-)

Not in BB, they removed all their inventories online and in-store. My guess is because of this Walmart price. I am guessing it will be back in stock after Feb 2nd. What a bunch of crooks, they dont want to price match it so they take all inventories out.

ArmchairQB 01-30-2013 06:32 PM

Thanks OP. ended up having to return rebuy to get the proper one but all is well that ends well. Wish the TV was going to be parked in my house for superbowl instead of the conference room at work. But my old school 65" rear projection CRT still looks damn good so I will not complain.

You are probably correct. Not a sign of a fiscally healthy retailer that wants to go head to head with the competition. More the sign of a retailer topping the list in the dead pool.

I just bought the 640U model from Sears for $1999 and took advantage of their 36 months 0% deal. It was out of stock for delivery and the only store in the state (MI) that had one was 70 miles away from me in Saginaw. Not a big deal, I'll road trip it saturday morning. Does anybody know if I'll have problems loading it in a Chevy Traverse? I called and got the box dimensions of 69 1/2 x 42 1/2. My wife has the car right now or I'd go measure it myself.

If your traverse is like my enclave, you have about 31" of clearance for the opening of the trunk. If you tilt it to get it in, it will be a tight squeeze (after taking it out of the box too). I'm considering just renting a uhaul truck for $20 plus miles instead of trying to cram a delicate piece of $2000 electronic equipment.

Fiscalista 01-31-2013 11:56 AM

Bought One in Alpharetta, GA

Walmart.com was showing no or limited stock at most metro Atlanta locations. Stopped at one Wednesday at lunch to see if they had stock. Price was marked $2,298. Online was $1,999. No advertising at store. Sales Associate scanned it and it can up $1,598. They had one left. I confirmed it was the 640 and bought it ($1,709 w/ tax) with AmEx to get extended warranty. They held it at Site-to-Store for me to pick up today (using minivan).

For those in Atlanta - as of 10 am EST, Best buy was showing at least one 640 in stock at Northlake/Tucker location.

Thanks OP!

I don't know if you can call it "bait and switch" really since the model # was never advertised in the circular. It was mentioned earlier that they stock different models in different regions. I think it's more or a war crime that Walmart would have this 70" TV advertised in all their circulars, but not even carry anything that large in most (that's false advertising if you aske me). For example, the 55" is the largest TV that the 2 super Walmarts near me have.

Are you sure it's still going to be there (especially after announcing it here)? Maybe Sears would price match it instead of accepting an exchange.

ArmchairQB 01-31-2013 12:09 PM

Not sure how accurate this is. I was told that if you have to transport the tv by laying it flat you should let it sit back in the upright position for a week for operating it.

That's a bummer considering I have a 140 mile round trip. Also, Im not really too keen on transporting it out of the box. Maybe I better look for a truck to borrow.

GratefulDad 01-31-2013 12:40 PM

for anyone else considering the 600U ( 1 of the walmarts here- TN, said they had 640U, but sold out - all others were 600U)
PaulsTV has it for 1699 free ship :)
http://www.paulstv.com/LED-Televi...LE600U.asp

that was 50.00 less than walmart + tax, and they will deliver /unbox....

I'm not sure how accurate this is either but as I understand it, these large screens are not transported laying flat because the weight of the glass and the lack of structural support right behind may cause it to crack or damage the internals during transport. That is why they don't recommend transporting while laying flat.

GnatGoSplat 01-31-2013 01:12 PM

So how many of you ended up transporting it flat? Any problems or issues doing so?

illinijeff327 01-31-2013 01:34 PM

I'm going to purchase one at my local base after work. They will price match which will save me from paying taxes. It was either this tv or the 80 inch for $3499.

I tried that code last week when I ordered the 640U from them. Didn't work. Probably only applies to certain models.

I had to transport it flat in my Nissan Quest. Got it home, unpacked it and so far it runs like a Champ. Really like the picture. Games, Cable Box, and Movies all look great. Really happy with the purchase.

I think I can because they had the 640 in the store displayed with the $1598 sale tag on it. And they said they have one left so I went and rented a uhaul. I should have attempted to purchase and come back for pick-up. Oh well. The family is happy with the purchase. I am just upset I did not get the best deal possible ;-)

AmEx doubles manufactures original warranty, up to 1 year. However, some exclusions include:
Items purchased on instalments, and
Items with separate service plans.

So, don't count on it if you take advantage of financing with installments or to further extend a third-party warranty.

Well you didn't say anything about them having a 640 on display (just that you had rented a truck and left with a 600). I would've been pretty hot about that too.

Thanks, got tv at Walmart for $1,428.20 + (tax119.37). 10% off because it was floor model for a couple hours. They said they just put it out as a floor model 2 hours ago. They put it back in box but couldn't find the manual.

msivas 02-01-2013 07:40 PM

I saw price tag for $1598 for 640U which had 5HDMI, WiFi Certified, etc., in the display model. When asked the associate, there was one in stock. When they bring the box it says 600U. And the store associate says this is exactly the same TV that he had put it up for display. I showed the 3xHDMI on the box to the associate. ANd the reply was, i will open the box and show it to you that it will have 5 HDMI :-) Asked if they would sell the display model. he said, I would not do that to you. Did not want to buy 600U, so walked out.

mattman770 02-01-2013 10:02 PM

For a while I was worried I was taking advantage by getting the 640. What about those who got the Quattron version? Seems Walmart's getting out of the 70 inch game. Friend lent me truck and we had a fun night of it. The wife isn't happy, but she hasn't watched Tron Legacy yet :).

Hier0 02-02-2013 12:53 AM

dracore 02-02-2013 06:37 PM

The 2013 models of the Sharp 70"+ TVs are coming so it makes sense they need to clean out inventory

blitz960 02-02-2013 06:52 PM

I finally got one at my local Walmart. Had to go round and round with the store manager for an hour as he was unwilling to sell the display unit. Awesome!
Now, I'm wondering if it is safe to buy a display unit as it has been on for god knows how long. Store manager refused to sell me the 2 year extra warranty due to display model.

Have any of you guys had good luck buying display model? There wasn't a box, so I'll have to go in the morning with a friend's Tahoe and transport it home without the box.

My local store would not sell the display model. But if they do sell it would 10% off. And when I asked about the warranty, extra warranty, the associate said, it will be as it is with a new one. first there will be a 90 day exchange period. and then the first year of warranty kicks in +2 year if i purchased it.

blitz960 02-02-2013 07:32 PM

I guess every store is different. No uniformity whatsoever. The store mgr was not willing to sell me the extended warranty. I might have to buy it from square trade if I do decide to pick it up tomorrow and keep it. I'm sure square trade wouldn't deny me of a warranty.
But I'm still wary of actually buying a display unit.

P/s: on the not selling you the display unit, you'll have to be adamant. First it was the associate, then the zone supervisor, then the department manager. The whole time I was just standing there looking the in the eyes saying that even SAMs club sells the display units. And I demanded to talk to someone higher every time the person says no. Eventually they gave in and was actually pretty nice about it

big3b69 02-02-2013 07:44 PM

I know this is too late, but I just came back from my local topeka, KS target store and they were not only price matching but taking an additional 5% off with their card. Too bad the man behind me had called and put the last one on hold. Oh well, they are honoring the price through the 8th in case they get one in.

GnatGoSplat 02-02-2013 11:26 PM

I wasn't able to find any in stock at 7 of the local Wal-marts.
I did find one place had the display, but I didn't really want the display unit (and they didn't seem like they wanted to sell it). One store in another town nearby showed 2 in stock according to their handheld computer, but the guy checked the back and said they didn't have any. Didn't even have one on display.

I've still got my sights on the Sharp. For something this big and unwieldy to move/sell, I'll be planning on keeping it for awhile so the price difference is still worth it for better PQ.

Well frys sold the 70 for $1498 in BF of 2011 now. I think the massive sales of 60 and 55 selling at $550 to $799 will bring the 70inch sales to a complete grind except for those who don't really care about price.

Yeah, Sears had it for around $1600 after ShopDiscover or something like that. However, if 70" sales comes to a complete grind as you say, that would have the opposite effect. Demand has to be high to drive prices down.

2011 BF I was up at midnight for this deal with family. Decided not to go because I thought at 12:01am the TV is sold out to the guy running inside Frys, tent in one hand and folded chair and pillow in the other hand. Next morning I got there around 2pm (on BF) and the guy at the register said they had 57 and sold the last one at 11am. So I thought, thats fine I can wait until next BF, get a higher model or get this one probably for $1200. Then I saw all the 55~60 inch models going for $599 and $699 I though I am going to score a 70Inch for $900~$1000. It never happened. Its the weirdest thing. 42Inch TVs were $1000 in 2011 and now they are $300ish at BF 2012 except for the 70Inch, it just doesnt budge. Mainly because Sharp is pretty much the single manufacturer (except Vizio).

When I was at BB BF of 2012 the floor salesperson was begging me to buy one at Frys BF price I think it was $1699 or something, he said he will throw in free shipping that Frys doesnt offer. I told him $1499 he said he cant do that. his pushiness told me 70Inch TVs are not selling well.

The other problem is that the 70 Inch basic model (600 or 640) used to look nice at Frys next to other TVs, of course black levels are really bright GRAY on the screen but its a huge TV and that made up for it. Now in 2013 when you go to Frys and look at them the quality looks bad, TVs has advanced a lot in the past 3 years and Sony, Samsung, LG and even TCL/Vizio have very nice screens with deep blacks.

The one thing that is not getting better is the refresh rates, even with the latest models, as soon as the camera pans everything is blurry even on Sony's so called 480Hz (BS if you ask me) and Panasonic's 600hz plasma. So they need TRUE higher refresh rates or maybe its the bluray players than cant produce high enough quality when camera pans or objects move fast on the screen.

Sharp comes default in FILM mode by the way, its the first thing you turn off when you buy the TV. It makes movies and shows look like they are filmed with amateur camera at home. Stupid Sharp doesnt fix this being the default when you first buy the TV. Keep the option but dont make it default!! Most stores dont know about it and keep it like that on display. Looks pretty odd.

I actually had the Sears deal in mind when I mentioned BF 2011 because I live 1200-miles from the nearest Fry's.

After reading this thread I visited a local Walmart on the final day of the sale. When I arrived, the folks in the Electronics Department had no idea the Sharp 70' HDTV was on sale in their store. Although they had a 640 on display, it was explained that nobody purchased one in ages and they haven't stocked this item in a month or more. Their two most popular large sets were the Vizio 55/60 and Samsung 55. When I asked for a Raincheck I was told Walmart doesn't give rainchecks. Hmmm.

Needless to say, I wasn't happy the local store had zero, none, nil Sharp 70s in stock (although model number was in question at the time), they have not maintained any in their inventory, store personnel knew nothing of the sale, and they didn't issues rainchecks. So I spoke to the manager who quickly told me that it must be an online only sale because this item wasn't in their local store ad. In fact, he mentioned they don't sell many 70s and haven't had any in stock in weeks. He pulled out the local store ad, but I had to remind him he was looking at the one starting next week (on Sunday and not Saturday). Although I was quickly able to pull up the local ad from Walmart.com on my smartphone, he told me that the sale was online only...until I asked him to pull up the flyer on a store computer.

He was unable to pull up the store ad online (not sure why) but he ran to the back of the store and located an old (although it was still the current one) store flyer from the archies since they replaced all the store ads with the flyers that starte on Sunday. Yeah, I know...not well organized, but he was helpful and showed a keen interest in answering my question. After locating the store ad he came out and apologized profusely because there it was right on Page #1. He said he was embarrased because nobody had inquired about the Sharp 70 HDTV the entire week. Additionally, they don't often stock that item and (his words) the 640U is the only Sharp 70 he can order. He was actually upset he didn't see the ad in the flyer (he may have purchased one at that price) and even more upset that Coporate dropped the ball by sending any to the store, which would have triggered an inquiry.

The store manager called the area Walmart stores (withing 10-15 miles) and nobody had them in stock. The closest store that had one was more than 40-miles away and I was in no mood to drive all that way since I still had snow in the bed of my truck. As it turned out, the manager placed an order for the 640U while I was standing there and he will contact me when the set arrives. Oh, and he will honor the sales price of $1598 even though Walmart is losing money on the sale. While not extremely well organized, he could not have been more helpful and true to his word. I have the manager's direct number so I am cautiously optimistic that I will be picking up my new 640U in a week or so. We shall see.

I probably could have done something similar but I was not willing to do that amount of work to get that sale. But thanks for the story, let us know if you are able to get one.

Got One

Thanks!!! I stopped on the way home from work last night and picked one up in Mobile, AL. The display had no price. The cashier scanned the box in the back and it showed $1598. She was shocked at the price and asked me how I heard about it. SLICKDEALS!!!
