This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

I brought two MP3 players & one cell phone.
However, the manager/supervisor at the customer service outright rejected the trade in.
She told me that they are not eligible, since they are "old".

No wonder it's "Worst Buy".

celeritini 01-28-2013 11:57 PM

is this another round? I didn't do any last time, nor have plan this round... by far

lillazyfats81 01-29-2013 12:03 AM

Can the cell phones be broken? Like broken screen, etc.

You got banned for recycling too much...? That's like getting grounded for eating your vegetables. How much is too much?

mr.wolf 01-29-2013 01:22 AM

is this 3 items per store per day, or 3 items per day for all best buys?

I did more than 3/day on 3 days, 9, 6, and 6 phones

on the 16th I did 9, 17th 3, and put the employee in his place since he had no clue what he was doing, and on the 18th the banhammer had been dropped :) might have been due to the CS rep logging out of the system before completing the transaction the first time, but I'm not sure

They gave me a printout mentioning something about loss prevention etc..

got $255 (with $30 not being in my name) out of it so whatever... the regular trade in program is absolute junk, you can get 2x the trade in value on ebay easily in 99% of the cases

In the old thread a guy mentioned that he had been banned after only 2-3 days which is insane

reddragon0611 01-29-2013 01:36 AM

can you trade if your item isnt on the list?

What do you guys have that you're trading in for a $5 gift card? Isn't it much slicker to just sell your items on ebay?

They will give you a $5 gift card for items of no value. I had a bunch of ancient cell phones I brought in, 128mb MP3 players from 2001, useless 1MP digital cameras, etc. None of this has any value on ebay. Takes the CS rep a while to put the information in the computer, but I made out with about $50 and got useless garbage out of my junk drawers and basement.

shadowhawk2020 01-29-2013 06:27 AM

What tablets qualify? I have one of those old ereader/tablets from cvs/bed bath and beyond.

It has to be an item that can fall into one of the categories listed. I brought them a satellite radio receiver and a digital voice recorder, neither of which were eligible. YMMV, of course.

If not the $25 deal, they should at least give you the $5 recycle deal for it.

I brought in an Insignia (Best Buy brand) portable DVD player and they said it was not on the list so no gift card for me. I told them to keep it anyway since it did not work.

Yeah it looks like it falls under the ereader category... Not worth the 40 minute drive for the 3 item at a time.

Did they give you credit for everything you brought in whether there is a value in their system or not?

Southern California BB will not give $5 for cell phones not on their list. I brought in 3 samsung phones and was told only 1 was elegible for the giftcard. tried Wesminster and LongBeach.

inmyveganopinion 01-29-2013 06:59 AM

Thanks op! Last time I turned in an ancient nokia phone, lg flip phone, 2 blackberry pearls, broken no battery samsung moment, & a broken digital camera. I tried a bluetooth but they wouldnt take that.

slickdealer2099 01-29-2013 07:07 AM

I recycled 3 old routers, didnt get anything. Got $15 for 3 MP3 players, took a long time and they dont have a clue about the program usually. Worst Buy.

69ragtop 01-29-2013 07:10 AM

Any chance of BB taking these for $5 each?

What! That's not bad at all. I thought it was just for whatever is on their "trade in program" website, which is fairly new generation stuff. I have a few old things I could definitely trade in! Thanks for the info.

ATE 01-29-2013 07:39 AM

I see they have headphones on their trade-in list, does that mean I can take in a cheapo pair of earbuds and get $5?

insyder 01-29-2013 07:47 AM

here is my advice on this:

1. Before heading out make sure you check the bestbuy trade in website for the items you are returning. If they are on the list, you're good. If not, most likely you will not get anything.
2. Pack a lot of patience. Most BB employees hate this the most.At one store they were fighting on who would not do the trade in. Even if they know what they're doing plan at least 15-30 minutes of waiting.
3. Stick by 3 a day per person.

I did this 3-4 times, still have another 50 phones that I could exchange, but its just not worth the hassle for me.

bigmace 01-29-2013 07:50 AM

Seems like you would get more value selling on ebay. Sure its a hassle but so is this.

Obviously it depends on what "it" is that you're selling on ebay... Just looked up a bunch of Blackberries - saw a model that was getting $120 on ebay with a few hours left to bid. BestBuy here is offering $25.

To clarify, I turned in a broken Playstation 1, a broken original Xbox, and a broken Gamecube.

Also to sell on ebay don't you have to link paypal to your bank account? In other words give them the keys to the kingdom!

basket01 01-29-2013 08:25 AM

But then you have to spend all the $5 gift cards at BestBuy..Is it really worth the 30 minutes of time to go and recycle crap

yes, however most employees do not know how to run it in the system

you want to recycle items that are not found in their system, not trade-in

the green recycle button shows up on top of the page when listing the different item categories, doing a recycle will prompt $5GC/item as well

you buy Kindle gift cards, which are valid on everything at amazon.com :)

BB is a useless store otherwise, everything is overpriced like crazy

Bandin03 01-29-2013 08:27 AM

Are there any small electronic items sold in dollar stores that will work?

So in theory can I recycle anything to get the $5/item?

Kopower 01-29-2013 08:36 AM

Well, it's worth a shot. I have an old Blackberry Curve 8330 with a broken track ball, and a 32 gb Creative mp3 player that no longer works. On the trade in site, it says the Curve is worth $0. So they will still give me a $5 gift card?

Hey, that's not fair. Best Buy is much more than an Amazon showroom. Best Buy is great when you need something in a hurry. Especially since you can then purchase the same item from Amazon and return it at Best Buy when it arrives to get a refund. Great price AND same day service. They're a match made in heaven.

:lmao::lmao::lmao: Repped.

ehphone 01-29-2013 08:55 AM

Best Buy is good for buying Apple products at a discount (huge discount) in my case. I have purchased the last 4 Apple products at almost 50% off retail which makes the price palatable. Otherwise, I am not going to pay retail for any Apple products. You have to be patient, deal with their moronic employees, but in the end you can get a great deal.

stealadeal 01-29-2013 08:56 AM

As long as this has been going on, I still get reps that do not know what they are doing when accepting MP3 players.
There is no category "MP3" in the system, it only shows IPOD's. If you get the run around " we can't take mp3's" tell them all mp3's are sub catergorized under IPOD's.. Get Mgr if they do not believe you.

I have traded:
MP3-- All kinds name brand and generic
Camera's- kids digital camera's, 1 cheap key ring digital camera
cell phone-- all old

None of them would take my old portable CD players

lennyboy 01-29-2013 09:13 AM

I do plan to bring in so old junk to BB for $5 GCs. I'm a little reluctant to trade in my old cellphones because I'd rather hold on to them when the Microsoft stores hand out $25 GCs for old cells.

Do the BB Mobile stores accept this stuff for the trade in program?
Thx.

popyu 01-29-2013 09:26 AM

I brought two MP3 players & one cell phone.
However, the manager/supervisor at the customer service outright rejected the trade in.
She told me that they are not eligible, since they are "old".

No wonder it's "Worst Buy".

They do have to have an entry in their system, you can check on their website, even if it says $0 value they give you the $5. Maybe come in with a printout of your item if you can find it online.

Traded in like $50 of old cellphones and mp3's and random junk (all pretty brand name) Nokia/creative etc.

The whole $25 extra for tablet seems like it's not really worth it, $115 for my great condition acer A500, where I could probably get an easy $200-250 on craigslist. Kindles and nooks don't count under the tablet section, they might have actually been worth trading in.

Zodiac 01-29-2013 12:20 PM

Anyone know if you can turn in a old CRT monitor?

Have one lying around and haven't really thought about getting rid of it until now. :P (not a small device but worth trying anyways? haha)

The manager did not even bother to look up the system.
She looked at them, and said no.

Worst Buy wanted my finger print to recycle a 6 year old cracked-screen prepaid phone. Untrained staff then insulted me saying that I could have stolen it. They refused to show me proof that they were complying with any law. Hope they go out of business.

kitkittykat 01-29-2013 02:57 PM

I know this will sound like a dumb question, but seriously need some help. I won a first generation Nook (BNRV100) two years ago. I never removed it from the box. I absolutely hate the idea of selling on eBay. I own a Kindle Fire HD. I'm considering turning the Nook into Best Buy. It looks like I would get $35 for it. I figure it is a slim chance I would use it, but yet I worry I might. I guess I'm curious as to what you guys think.

Just did this today and had a great experience at BB, surprisingly, despite all the negativity about BB on here. I went in and asked where to do trade-in. The dude passing out flyers by the door told me to go to Customer Service and then advised that I should instead skip over to the Online Pick-up desk to bypass the busy Customer Service desk. I was the only person in line at the Online Pick-up desk but the only girl working there was helping someone on the phone. After about five minutes of waiting, a man that acted like a supervisor/manager walked over asking if I needed help. I said I came for a trade-in and showed him the camera, he directed me over to the Video Game section. He even called over to the employee there to expect a customer for trade-in; I felt so valued. I walked over to the Video Game section where there was a desk just for Video Game trade-ins. The guy there was very friendly about doing trade-ins, unlike the post about how employees were fighting not to do it and such. He couldn't find my instant film camera in the system, not even in the Recycle section and there was no place to select Generic either (he even asked two bypassing workers for advice). So I was like that's fine and walked away to check out some other stuff. He walked over to find me after less than five minutes telling me he figured it out and so I followed him back to the trade-in desk. The whole process took about five minutes and you mostly stand there waiting while he clicks through the screen and type in some information. He took my ID and e-fingerprinted me and then I signed and got my gift card which I later used to purchase an open item camera that looked like new and was selling for $95.99 (originally $229.99). They were passing out 10% off open-item coupons at the door for in-store use only which triggered my purchase. While checking out, the cashier needed a supervisor/manager approval and the man from my earlier encounter that directed me to the Video Game section while I was standing in line at the Online Pick-up came over, gave me a look, asked if I did my trade-in well, input his code, and walked away. I was expecting hassles and such but it was a pretty darn good experience at BB for me today.

While checking out, the cashier needed a supervisor/manager approval and the man from my earlier encounter that directed me to the Video Game section while I was standing in line at the Online Pick-up came over, gave me a look, asked if I did my trade-in well, input his code, and walked away. I was expecting hassles and such but it was a pretty darn good experience at BB for me today.

so let me get this straight

-you were misdirected the moment you stepped in the store
-you had to wait in line for 5 minutes just to find out that it was the wrong line
-you were re-directed to the video game section, at which the employee was so uneducated he could not process -your trade in resulting in you leaving, same goes for his 2 co-workers, and yeah, I guess you had to sit there for 5 minutes at least
-you then couldn't buy a camera with a coupon that had been handed out in the store without manager override

and this was "a great experience"?

what the...

Yeah I knew someone would nitpick about my experience. It wasn't a perfect experience but everything ended well for me which is the most important part and so I thought it was a good experience. I was expecting a bad experience, such as not getting the gift card or getting dissed, but it ended up better than I had thought so it was a good experience. I was in a good mood too.
- I may've been misdirected and stood in the wrong line for about 5 minutes, but I was promptly approached by an employee who guided me to the correct area.
- The employee may've not been very experienced with the trade-in of an old camera that wasn't listed in their system but at least instead of giving up on me he continued to look for a solution and after finding it he went to look for me to go back and do the trade-in process. That, I thought, should be lauded. Other bad employees would've just given up and let you leave.
- It should be strange that a coupon that was handed out at the store should need manager override but I suppose almost all BB coupons seem to work that way (at least the popular ones that I see posted here at times) so I accept it as a norm there.

We are walking into BBY "expecting a bad experience".

This just sums up how bad BBY is.
