I was always wondering whats the "difference between $20 Linksys router & there sub $200 routers."

Thanks Op, I got one- will see if this is worth the money for additional features- else goes back to return. or sell to someone..

Thanks in for 1

jfreak623 01-29-2013 07:24 AM

bought this beginning of the month. Opted for new due to the reviews of the refurb. A lot of people reported getting 4th gens. Replaced a crappy belkin I had and haven't had issues since.

othernash 01-29-2013 07:32 AM

Bought an Apple refurb for $159 a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier with it. Getting better speeds on all my devices consistently. Don't know about the quality of the BB refurbs, though.

$159? That is high. Regular price on Amazon is $170. Refurb direct from Apple is $139.

nsfw 01-29-2013 07:50 AM

i ordered this same deal last year and after waiting a week for shipment i got the previous generation. the MC model. So I had to send it back and wait another week for them to reship. was kinda a bummer since i was in a hurry at the moment.

ishareit 01-29-2013 07:53 AM

Is this covered by apple warranty?

Chmeeee 01-29-2013 07:54 AM

Looking at the reviews, I'd say that Best Buy doesn't have very good QC on their refurbs.

jreuschl 01-29-2013 08:08 AM

I received one during last sale in December and it works fine and is the latest model. Apparently YMMV :)

Can you not take it back to bestbuy store and ask them to ship you a new one? It always takes forever to ship something out...

nutrapi 01-29-2013 08:34 AM

I'm just going to take it back to a store if this is an old model, etc..

In for one - used up some rewardzone certs on this, so it ended up being ultra cheap - and lately best buy has been upping their game in regards to prices and return policies, so I'm optimistic about my in store return if this ends up being a piece of crap.

no, but it doesn't say anything about not being covered by Best Buy's standard return policies so you should be able to return it if it fails to meet its item description/working condition.

trife.from.nt 01-29-2013 08:48 AM

Spend the extra $$ and get a refurb directly from Apple.

Best Buy's warranty is garbage and with Apple you'll get a 1-yr warranty as if it was a new unit.

Also, note that if you have AppleCare on an Apple desktop/laptop, your Airport Extreme will be covered under it as long as it is purchased within 24 months of the computer purchase/registration date.

kingsofleonl 01-29-2013 08:59 AM

What would be the return policy on Refurb Items with Bestbuy?

okinawanmatt 01-29-2013 09:07 AM

Nearly 50% off.

Apple Care still active if it's within one year of purchase (stated on Apple forums and previous SD forums).

In the price-range for comparable Linksys dual-band routers. 3x3 antenna with some of the highest power/gain for a router. Anandtech approved.

Standard return and exchange policy.

No-brainer. My co-workers and I all bought one each. Hope we get working models with the right parts.

dmb41 01-29-2013 09:34 AM

Ah, what the heck... I'll give it a shot and hope I get a good one. If not, I'll return.

Having bought Apple refurbs from Best Buy, I wouldn't call them reputable. I've bought two Apple Airport Express refurbs from them and both were configured with the previous user's settings - Best Buy didn't even bother to reset the units, much less refurb them. Once I cleared the settings, one worked fine, and the other is unstable, dropping connections all the time - probably the reason it was returned to BB.

xsupan0va 01-29-2013 09:46 AM

I have Verizon modem which is also a router. Can I also use this?

MaDequipment 01-29-2013 09:50 AM

I purchased one in December as well. It works great, looked like new and turned out to a 5th gen router. This is a YMMV deal, but for the price, it's a deal worth picking up.

Higher end routers will have more prosumer/professional features. One example is Quality of Service, the ability to control if network devices are capped at a certain speed. This is especially useful if you want to prevent a certain user or certain device from hogging all of the bandwith. Higher-end routers will also have other fun features like USB ports (for mounting external hard drives to your network)

Another high-end feature is the use of "Hardware NAT" (NAT standing for Network Address Translation). In short, Hardware NAT is meant to reduce (and nearly eliminate) most of that "lag" experienced with going from one webpage to another webpage. Hardware NAT sounds hokey, but many folks have confirmed that the Hardware NAT does correlate with a better user experience. My Asus rt-n56u router has Hardware NAT built in, and I, too, can attest to its effectiveness.

Here is a blurb from Asus:
Quote:

Gigabit Internet Surfing with Hardware NAT

Equipped with a capable hardware NAT acceleration engine and built-in Gigabit Ethernet, it gives you full Gigabit internet performance, making its WAN to LAN throughput up to 2-5 times that of traditional software-based NAT Gigabit routers.
Even though all routers tout adhering to a certain standard (e.g. Wireless N), higher-end routers will be better at handling large volumes of traffic since it can reach higher levels of speed within your network. Wireless range is subjective, due to the number of variables that can hinder signal, but higher-end routers will typically exert better range. SmallNetBuilder.com [smallnetbuilder.com] runs a slew of speed and range tests on many common routers, and you'd be surprised at the differences even within a manufacturer's own line of routers.

Here's my turn to ask a question: What is the difference between Apple's routers versus other higher-end ones (e.g. Asus RT-n66u)?

It will depend on the original purchase date of the particular device that you get. You will have to check the serial number on it with apple.

nakenergy 01-29-2013 10:10 AM

Best Buy Apple Refurbs are not good. Had to return one as it got stuck on the UI and I could not even set it up. Apple refurbs from Apple are the way to go. At this price, you can try since the return can always be a trip to the store; if it works then it is a great deal.

BarryT82 01-29-2013 10:12 AM

check out the amazon reviews to get a better idea of how this router performs.

could anyone give me some advice on how to test one of these to make sure it is ok - should I run a speed test with my current router prior to buying? Anything to look for?

I think it's worth a shot at this price, and amex should add a warranty, i just want to make sure it is not under performing and have not have an idea.

dealsalways 01-29-2013 11:06 AM

When I bought a refurb ipod touch from Cowboom and it malfunctioned, I took it to an Apple store and since it was less than a year from the original purchase, they just replaced it with a new one.

If there's any issues with this, can one do the same and expect similar results? I'm thinking yes??

griswolds 01-29-2013 11:07 AM

i could squaretrade a refurb correct?

thermarest 01-29-2013 11:07 AM

FWIW, I bought one early last year also refurb from best buy. It came in a plain white box, not retail, and looked to be perfectly new. Been running without a reboot ever since. I checked the SN on the apple website and it looks to me like it would be covered by warranty. IMHO, at this price and with 30 days to return it makes very good sense to buy refurb vs. new, even without warranty. How many here would pay $90 for 11 months of insurance on a $90 product???

Of course. Who turns their router off?

Mine is an older generation that I bought new about 4 years ago and the only time it has been unplugged is the handful of resets I've had to do in the time. I love my Airport Extreme. Way better to me than the Linksys and Netgear routers I had before it.

A) There's no warranty to extend.

I bought 5 of these during Thanksgiving sale from BB. They were all in white boxes and 5th generation. I sold tthree to friends and have the other two extending my home network from a time capsule I had purchased earlier. They all work perfectly and stable (never need reboots like my old netgear and linksys). The extremes hand off the wireless access seamlessly as you move through the house so you have excellent signal from anywhere. I have them wired with GB lan between the routers and then the wireless access points serve the clients depending on which part of home you are in. I highly recommend these units. The ones I received looked brand new and worked perfect.

I have the previous model Airport Extreme that I got from cowboom (bestbuy deal site) as a refurb and am very happy!
I am getting this one as well since I have a long stretched out house, and Airport Extremes have an easy feature to become a repeater. Going to use this one as the main router, and change the old one into the repeater.
I've homebrewed a linksys wrt54g into becoming a repeater however it was a horrible idea. Thx for the deal

Oh so I thought a 'refurb' always meant that it came from the manufacture so really Best Buy would just be the reseller. How is Best Buy qualified to do a refurb? Do they just have one of the Geek Squads plug it in and see if the light it lit??

I have concerns about the USB drive sharing abilities:

1) This can't take any NTFS formatted drives ?? That's a pretty key limitation for me. Any way to get this to serve NTFS drives?

2) Does this have a 2TB limitation? I'd like to use 3TB USB drive.

Hrshycro 01-29-2013 01:46 PM

Best router I've owned, but these aren't refurbished by Apple... So, they've probably been returned to a BestBuy, shipped to some third party, where someone plugged it in, saw a green light, and now you're buying it.

you don't burn things out from leaving them on. you actually kill your electronics faster by turning them off and on. the heat expansion and cooling contraction is a killer on circuit boards.

Yeah but no one clicks on every deal to see if there is another deal inside that is totally unrelated to the deal in the title. In this case an AEBS deal inside a BluRay movie deal titled thread.

Plus who says the -1 wasn't because of the other deals in that thread?

Uses a software program to change settings rather than a webpage. I consider this a downside.

Upside is that it works well and is reliable. Everyone else seems to have rushed to the bottom to create cheap crap that dies, needs to constantly be restarted, etc.

Best Buy is not Apple certified for router repairs. That's why they are supposed to void the warranties before reselling them.

Local Best Buy branches will accept the returns, at which point someone checks to see if all the parts are in the box, then they ship it back to a warehouse. It's checked again to see if it powers on, then repackaged, and sold.

Quality control or product testing does not factor into this at any point. Therefore, even though the webpage may call it "Refurbished", they qualify it with details explaining that it is "As Is" and sold without warranty.

PeterLu 01-29-2013 06:58 PM

Please excuse my ignorance as hardware is more my up my alley than networking, but if i plug my older hp LaserJet 1200 into the Airport, I will be able to print from all the other computers networked in my house, including my ipad, and iphones? I can not get my win7 computers that are wirelessly connected to print. It prints fine on my XP computer it is tethered into, but the three other laptops will not wirelessly print. Everything worked fine with the hp 6300 i had hooked up. Even if I manually install a driver, i cant get the win7 computers to find the printer on the network. I can’t seem to find out if the 1200 is compatible or not, or how difficult this is…thanks in advance.

Just got mine in the mail today - it's a current gen, has a couple scuffs on the bottom but otherwise looks great, came with a CURRENT gen power adapter, and works flawlessly. Manual, power adapter, and airport extreme included in box. I guess I'm 1 for 1 in regards to Best Buy refurbs not being a 2 out of 5 star experience as the rest of the bestbuy.com reviews would lead people to believe.

xben9x 01-31-2013 06:18 AM

Got mine yesterday. No problems. 5th Gen. Everything is correct. Much more stable, a bit faster then the ole' Linksys E2000.

bob61 01-31-2013 06:20 AM

Sorry, no warranty translates as no confidence by manufacturer on the quality of the refurb.

If that's the case, then shame on BestBuy, it should be sold as open box as is, it's not refurb'd then by any means. Passatola....

Apple never supports legacy hardware. For example, the HP OfficeJet or DeskJet made before 2004 are were not supported by the 1st generation Apple Time Capsule. 2006 devices were not supported by the 3rd generation Airport Extreme. And so on and so forth.

Since your HP LaserJet seems to be a 2007 model or before, I doubt that it will work with the 5th generation Airport Extreme. You will probably find a forum thread on Apple's support website.

I have an 8500 and it needed a E-PRINT driver from HP. Then it worked. Check HP to see if your printer is compatible.

Got mine in the mail today. 5th Gen in like new condition. Really easy setup AFTER I did a factory reset of the router. <-- Kinda threw me at first that it was asking for a password before I gave it one. The best part is that it's wayyyyy faster than my old router :)

Same here a few scuff on the bottom of the unit but when will i ever look at that again?

Had to reset the router because of the preset password, after that setup was smooth. Using it now and it's functioning fine.

Great Deal.

Got mine today. Bestbuy must hate their customers because I've never seen an online retailer do a worse packaging job. The router was loose in the box, bouncing around. Both the router and the adapter are pretty scuffed up; not sure if it was in this condition when shipped, or due to the poor packing. Both the router and power adapter are 5th Gen.

I checked the serial number to determine the warranty here [apple.com], and it came back with a message that I'd need to submit a proof of purchase to determine warranty, which is not the typical response, so I assume the serial has be deactivated or something.

I'm at work, so I can't determine how it's working. Congrats to those who got nice units; I lost the luck of the draw on physical appearance, but that won't matter if works flawlessly.

When I ur the serial it says

Mine looks mint as well - not a single scuff or blemish. Couldn't get warranty info from Apple's site by serial number either - it's asking me to submit a proof of purchase.

mine as well. box was open inside the box with everything scattered about. worse, I am in the northeast and it was so cold, and without any insulation, i was afraid to bring it in as thawing it would cause copious amounts of 'sweat' to be all over and through the device as it warmed up. what a terrible job by best-buy.

i got the same comments from apple. guessing they deactivated the serial number? they did let me register the device on my account though?

to the other posters, thanks for the comments on the printer. gonna give it a shot, and see what happens...

i wish i could give you more than 4 reps

mrednejar 02-02-2013 08:24 AM

i had very good experience with apple refurbished router(4th generation) bought from best buy from earlier deal for $99.once i received i checked the router warranty using apple website warranty link and it said not valid(or cannot be found ,do not remember!).but later when surge took down my router and one of the back Ethernet ports, went to apple store and they were able to locate the warranty and it still had 9 months and upon inspection, they thought its worth replacing then repairing, so they gave me a brand new router 5th generation. Now i have brand new rock solid working from almost an year with needing no reboot unlike the others which i had to do frequently.

P.S.- if you have any ios products with extended warranty then it should cover router for as long as the warranty goes so you do not have worry about it.

RKPunjabi14 02-02-2013 12:57 PM

Anyone have any ideas how to still get this deal? I missed out and need one!

dmb41 02-03-2013 10:12 PM

I picked mine up today and am very pleased. There is a small scratch on the top of it which is really only visible at the right viewing angle. It's much faster than my piece of junk Linksys router that was running DD-WRT.

lawdog3313 02-04-2013 06:12 AM

Go here:
https://daw.apple.com/cgi-bin/Web...uage=US-EN
Start the register date Dec 2012 and if it says invalid change to Nov 2012 and just keep going back.
I bought two. One has a warranty until July 2013 and the other is Aug 2013. Both are flawless.

Despite the terrible packaging of the my router, once I reset and configured my router, it is working great. It replaced a Cisco E3000. I'm bridged to my FIOS Actiontec router, and the range is much better than the E3000, and more importantly, it handles my IOS device bandwidth much better (I have two Apple TVs, two Airport Expresses serving as audio streamers, four Iphones and two ipads in my house, lol). My E3000 got bogged down to a crawl when all devices were connected, but it handles the traffic without a hitch now...

Thanks for the tip on backing up dates on the warranty checker. I just clicked back one month at a time, until Apple accepted the purchase date..I have a warranty thru August.

frankrizzo1234 02-04-2013 01:11 PM

Got mine today - 5th gen and looks great. Warranty valid through July 2013 - not bad.

Will set it up tonight to make sure it works as advertised. Will potentially replace a Cisco E2000...

Got mine today. 5th generation. I'll have to do the warranty trick as mine isn't going through yet. My apple is slightly scratched on top and bottom, so its not new, but very minor and you have to angle it to see them. As long as it works well, i could care less. I look forward to setting it up.

fyugioh 02-04-2013 10:04 PM

I can't register under my account because the serial number is registered to another Apple ID. Can I still use the warranty?

It's certainly easier to just bridge to the AEBS, and it seems to work great. Just plug a lan cable from your Actiontec into the AEBS wan port, select 'bridge' mode in the Airport Utility, and you are up and running. I just connect all my devices to the AEBS, and it seems to manage the traffic extremely well without interference from the Actiontec. My E3000 just couldn't handle all the devices I have connected, but the AEBS is handling it like a champ so far.

If you like a lot of extra work, you can make the AEBS the primary router, but you'd need your ONT to be switched to lan from coaxial connection (requires cal to FIOS technical service, and running a lan cable to your ONT outside your house), and you need to keep the Actiontec connected to the AEBS and your cable boxes connected to the Actiontec, if you wish to keep your cable boxes with VOD, listings guide, and addressable with the excellent FIOS remote for your cellphone or Ipad. Instructions here for masochists: Replace your FIOS router with AEBS [duglin.net]

Yep - how you did it is how I ended up doing it. At first I thought you were bridging the WiFi network from the Actiontec, but you're just letting the Actiontec run the DHCP server and the Airport Extreme do the WiFi.

Mine replaced a Cisco E2000 and WOW what a difference!! 25-30MB/sec instead of 5-8MB/sec near the AP, and 8-10MB/sec instead of 3-4MB/sec 2 floors down. Awesome! :woot:

If it works you could probably make some $$ buy selling it rather than returning it? Or just sell it to someone here for cost.

Not sure I need mine either. Already have one. And wireless coverage throughout house with 1 AEBS is better than I thought.

I picked up mine at Best Buy today and was happy that it was a 5th generation and that the Apple warranty was good through May 14 , 2013. Then I tried to set it up. The light was solid green until I pluged in the ethernet cable to my modem. It then started flashing yellow and the message in the utility was that there was a problem with the modem. So I hooked the modem back into my D-link and I can get back to the internet. What could be wrong?

Did you reset it first? And by utility your saying the airport utility? Should just be simple reset then connect to modem then setup via airport utility. Good luck

I had the same problem.. I thought it was a modem, but it's not.. It's only a router.. you still need a DSL modem for this..

Took it into the Apple Store yesterday, and they determined the PSU was faulty. They ordered a new one and it came in today. Up and running as I am typing this. Works like it should. I assume the one I got was returned to BB because it no longer powered on, but it was just a PSU issue.

What, the Airport extreme or the replacement PSU? The box BB sent was a plain white box with a couple stickers on it indicating it was a "refurbished" airport extreme with the serial number, and the PSU from apple gave me looks brand new.

I don't think apple cares what box the thing came it, only if it has a warranty left on the unit.

What "proof" did you show?

And, where/how did you do this? In store? Online chat? Phone?

In regards to the questions in this thread regarding AppleCare coverage. I was able to re-initialize my coverage to start with the Best Buy purchase date. I submitted the check for Applecare coverage here:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agree...Dynamic.do
After entering the serial number I was shown that my AppleCare coverage expired in June 2013. At the bottom of this page is a hyperlink that says "Submit your proof of purchase online". I clicked this link, provided the Best Buy receipt as a PDF attachment, and within 12 hours received the good news that my product is covered for a full year.

I hope this helps everyone else!

I got this router and haven't set it up. I'm not sure if I really need it. i have an old Linksys Linksys WRT54GL router that still works. It seems a little slow at times, but mainly I use an ethernet cable to my PC. Wireless when my laptop is on (not too much) and gaming/streaming with my PS3. It seems to do the job well. Would there be major reasons why I should upgrade to the Apple or should I save the $$$$ ? Thanks for your thoughts.

If you are syncing iOS devices over wifi with iTunes and using Cisco VPN stay away from Airport.
I am using it in bridge mode and having issues, once connected to work via VPN, i am not able to see iOS devices in iTunes, apple support is saying it is a VPN issue not Airport

Has anyone observed:

- 2.4G range is same or lower than the 5G band range? That's a bit strange. 5G does get pretty far compared to the other router[s] like the Netgear 3700 I had so all in all it seems to be a keeper. But I can't believe if 5G that far, why isn't 2.4G range much greater?

I test this using "speedtest" , "wifi-analyzer" apps on Android.

Not having dual channel bonding on 2.4G is a bummer too(separate issue), all in all why is 2.4Ghz not as good as it could be?

This works, I just extended my coverage for a whole year for my two purchased routers. Thank you and repped.
