TD, it seems that the registration pages aren't working now even though they were working earlier and the instruction pages still work. I've never experienced this before, but it concerns me so I asked the mods to move this to Deal Talk. I'm hoping you might know more about this or be able to offer some suggestions.

What options do you know of for people who did not register the rebate yet? Will they still be able to get it by calling 4myrebate for assistance or should they just get refunds from TigerDirect? TIA.

Uh oh, that's not a good sign! :(

It appears that other TigerDirect 4MyRebate rebate registrations are still working, so it looks like they disabled the online registration for these particular offers.

People should still be able to register for the rebate via phone. Just be persistent with the phone agent and tell them you want to register for Rebate Offer #TD-8528 (for 500 GB) or Offer #TD-8483 (for 1 TB drive), but the online site isn't allowing you to. They should be able to register you via phone and give you your tracking # (and it will also be sent to you via e-mail).

They have done this in the past on deals they didn't want to honor, but people were still able to get 4MyRebate to register them for the offers via phone. I wouldn't put this off... I'd call them immediately tomorrow (their offices are open from 9 AM EST to 5 PM EST).

The Phone # is: 1-800-286-9146

If you have already purchased and registered for the rebate (before it closed), you shouldn't have any issues receiving your prepaid card. To double-check that your rebate is still active in the system, go HERE [4myrebate.com].

Input your tracking # (which should have been sent to you via e-mail) and zip code.

It's a shame that WD portable drives don't have standard SATA connectors inside. $55 for a 1 TB is pretty darn cheap.

RyanM55 01-29-2013 05:54 PM

I bought one of each at $39.99 and $59.99 AR last week. Might have to grab another at this price!

Are you saying that if the drive is removed from the case they can't connect to sata as an internal drive? ? ?

Yes, that's what I'm saying. They have the USB connections soldered onto the HD instead of the typical SATA interface, which is what you would need to make it into a laptop hard drive (2.5" drive).

If you want to rip apart an external drive, I recommend sticking with Seagates, Toshibas, or most Hitachis.

However, Hitachi was bought out by Western Digital, so they might start doing the same thing soon.

no 2 or 3 TB drive rebates?!

anewdayrising79 01-29-2013 06:45 PM

My 640 GB portable drive is nearly full since I converted my movie collection to digital copies (and that was toning them all down to 720p, < 4GB mp4 files). I'm considering picking this up, for sure. TU

darkhunter 01-29-2013 06:45 PM

Tiger rebate sucks, 50/50 chance of you getting it. I would jump on this deal if I didn't have to mess around with rebates

Also their CC sucks as well, can't get a hold of someone, and their email customer service always give you the run around.

DJ3xclusive 01-29-2013 06:46 PM

Tempting...how long rebates take?

1thomas 01-29-2013 06:47 PM

damn usb-pcb drives

Unfortunately, some Toshibas are now doing it too, and unlike WD/Samsung portables, it's not obvious by the size of the drive externally.
I work in data recovery, and we hate having to recover these USB-PCB drives. There are extra steps making it more expensive if it fails and you need the data back.

I have the same fear about Hitachis now that WD owns them.

I bought the 1TB version back in December from TD.com.
It's a great value.

I personally love Tiger rebate. Super simple. Did 4 rebates within the past 2 months and received all 4 rebate cards.

jaysorbet 01-29-2013 06:53 PM

This is such a dumb question but what are the main uses to these things besides backing up your computer files and so on?

I don't think I'll be needing this anytime soon but does anyone know if prices for external hard drives probably dropping this year or next? Otherwise, I might consider jumping on this. Also, repped.

So true. The only time I can get a hold of somebody is when I call first thing in the morning their time, and when you're doing it from California to Florida, it's a complete pain in the ass.

I do have a trick though, for when I can get through. Call and press the button sequence for as if your order was rejected and you need to give them special bank information, and just cancel the order, saying you accidentally pressed the wrong button. It's perhaps the quickest way to talk to a live person, since their website doesn't allow you to perform it.

Do you have another method of backing up computer files?
If you don't, I recommend getting one and backing up asap. You never know when something bad can happen.

I use it to store lots of music, videos and picture files to clear up my computer's HD.

No other method. I have had this laptop since 2009 and it hasn't died on me.....yet. I have never ever done a back up of files ever in my life

I am guessing a hard drive like this creates a "image" or backup exactly everything you see on your documents, hard drive, desktop, etc? Sorry, I'm just total noob.

jimbeau 01-29-2013 07:05 PM

Limited Warranty: 12 months parts; 12 months labor kills it for me, but probably because I am not particularly in the market for a new drive. Repped for the post.

So far, I received one TD $30 rebate and had I've had one $30 rebate declined due to not mailing in the UPC label (which I did - attached with 2 pieces of tape in the marked box). Of course, once you mail in the UPC label, you don't have another one to send in. I'd pass on TD rebates and buy from Amazon or Newegg. It's well worth the few extra bucks.

agentkhiem 01-29-2013 07:10 PM

Before anyone tries to tell you TD rebates are unreliable, I'll chime in and say I've gotten all my rebates back from them without any problems. Go away, trolls.

lbwarped 01-29-2013 07:16 PM

i bought a few things for which the rebates went smoothly but also had two rebates not go smoothly. i did two headphone deals a few months back on successive days, mailed both rebates at the post office and both were declined.
I emailed them and they had me fax my copies of the material submitted and both rebates were approved very quickly.
It was suspicious that those two rebates were initially denied, but if it was a good enough
deal, I'd probably take my chances again.
I would definitely make a copy of the rebate form with the upc taped to it.

if you google 4myrebate review, they do have lots of complaints

I work for Hitachi GST. Western Digital only bought out the hard drive division of Hitachi. They have to remain competitors for two years before the merger can take place. That is one of the conditions of the merger. So Hitachi drives will be the same for a couple more years.

ms_nut 01-29-2013 07:33 PM

TigerDirect is the only company from whom I did not receive my mail in rebate. Did the $15 rebate on their WD media player 2 years ago, never received the rebate.

Great deal if you get the rebate, but I think I will pass on this one.

+1. I'm not a shill and I don't like rebates, but I've gotten every one I've ever applied for at Tigerdirect. You have to be smarter than the rebate form though, which will immediately disqualify some. Follow the rules and there should be no problems.

Yes, the fine print on the bottom of the rebate form mentions one rebate per household, per address, per name, etc, etc, so yes, there is a limit of one rebate per household.

Can I ask you a question? Don't you backup your emails, password program, document files, and your browser profiles? If so, do you really want to send back a drive that's crashed, knowing that it can be refurbished and all those files can be copied by some technician?

For the umpteenth time, you do not want to send back bad drives unless you've only had it for a week at the most and you know there's nothing of importance on it. A two year warranty just means that if you take advantage of it after the first year, you're sending alot of personal information back with it if you can't wipe it clean yourself.

Is the savings over a regular bare drive worth taking them apart? I never thought to buy a enclosed HD to use as an internal drive.

Yes, it is definitely worth the time taking it apart. If you don't care about saving the enclosure, you can just apply pressure until the case snaps apart. Usually there are a series of small clips to pop along the edge.

Many times the actual drives inside are the same as the "bare drives" which cost more.

Another thing to consider is that stores often clearance out older models/packaging of external hard drives, whereas that rarely happens with internal/bare drives.

I've purchased 1 TB portable HDs for dirt cheap (~$15 AC) on clearance at OD and other retailers.

If you see a USB 2.0 portable hard drive at a retailer, you might want to keep your eye on it because almost everyone is making the transition to USB 3.0 portables.

Those interested in these drives might also consider the Newegg Shellshocker - Seagate Expansion 750GB USB 3.0 Black Portable Hard Drive STBX750100 [newegg.com]. It's Seagate, but it's the smaller 2.5" form factor and it runs off of USB power (which is convenient). For $59.99 it seems like a better deal... no rebates + free shipping.

Same deal with the TOSHIBA Canvio Basics 3.0 750GB USB 3.0 Black Portable Hard Drive HDTB107XK3AA [newegg.com] - $59.99 after $20 promo code EMCXWVS48.

Just to clarify, this only applies to the "portable" version of these external drives, right? I've got a lot of WD Elements drives, both 1TB and 2TB, but they all have an AC power adapter. I always thought those drives can be removed from the case and can then be connected internally, particularly in the event that one of them fails and needs data recovered from it.

Yes, I was talking about portable HDs. WD Elements 3.5 Inch Desktop External HDs CAN be removed from their enclosure and used as standard SATA HDs.

Here is a video of how to take it apart:

Much much better. Seagates can be taken out of the cage and used as internal laptop/desktop drives. WD uses "new" technology by soldering the USB connector on the drive.

Edit: reading the reviews, NO, it can't be used as a laptop drive. And HDD inside is Samsung, not Seagate. Samsung does not really know how to make HDDs.
Pass.

If you moved them to the "backup" drive and then removed them from your computer to clear up space you didn't make a backup, you made a new primary drive, just as dangerous.

I'm looking at a YouTube video of a guy taking apart the same external hard drive from the casing and I see no such thing. Where did you heard it was soldered. Do you have one and check and see?

I truly doubt that www.4myrebate.com would accept a copy of the the paperwork previously mailed in. I agree that some rebate centers would do that, but I'd be surprised if anyone was successful with 4myrebate. If anyone has been successful with www.4myrebate.com on copies, please let us know. Not only is the rebate process for TD a major pain in the xxx, it makes it so you can't return an item once the UPC label has been removed. So they make out like bandits. They don't have to pay you the $30 and they don't have to worry about you returning the product. I feel like I'm buying a watch from a guy on the corner whenever I visit the TD website. I'll never buy from TD again.

Or if you have a $25 off $75 Staples coupon, you should be able to get the 1TB for $90 - $25 coupon - $30 rebate = $35.

It says on the video that if is a micro usb it is soldered. So apparently that is not the case for mini usb which I did not know. Thanks for posting the video.

Yes, that is a WD Elements drive, but that is the USB 2.0 version of this model. As he said in the video, "make sure to look for the version of the drive with a mini USB port on the enclosure as that means the port is soldered to the mainboard so you can use the drive outside of the case."

This version is the USB 3.0 model, with a mini USB 3.0 port, which is different than the one in that 2 year old video. Almost all WD portable HDs are now soldered to the drive itself.

The change took place around the same time USB 3.0 was introduced.

Actually, I very much doubt you know what you're talking about, because they definitely accept a copy of your paperwork in the event something is wrong with your submission. I know others on SD who have had to fax or mail copies to the resubmissions department, but usually they are willing to work with you. TigerDirect even has a rebate assurance program where they step in if you've made a reasonable effort to send everything in.

If you don't make copies and there is a problem... that's on you. Things happen, especially around the holidays, when I'm sure 4MyRebate hires a bunch of temp workers to scan in the thousands of rebate submissions they have to process.

As for the 4MyRebate process being a "major pain in the ass", I dont know how you figure. I think its probably one of the easiest and most efficient rebate systems I've dealt with and I do hundreds of rebates annually. The hardest part about the process is following directions, and if you can't do that, maybe you shouldnt be doing mail-in rebates in the first place.

Not only are 4MyRebates trackable, but they show you a scan of everything they received. They also update you when the documents are received, and when it is approved. I don't know how you could be more transparent than that.

And of course they are going to make you remove the UPC. If you didn't have to, you could buy the item, fill out the rebate, and return it... especially since they had an extended holiday return period in effect. It may not seem like much on a $10 rebate, but if it was a $50 or $100 rebate... You can bet people would try to game the system.

That wouldn't work. Staples is OOS and the rebate is specific to TD.

Szyszka 01-30-2013 06:12 AM

Just to add a comment on the rebate being processed by www.4myrebate.com. I did two with them just recently: this one for WD portable HD ($30) and one for Bosh brake pads ($10). or both, I was able to 'register' for the rebate online before even receiving my items. What you get after doing so is a form you print that includes a shipping label and a list of items (with check boxes) to be mailed in order to receive the rebate. Each step along the way has been confirmed/acknowledged by a short email. Checking rebate status online allows me to view a copy of my submission; it even includes both front and back of the envelope I used to mail the documents.

I have to say that the www.4myrebate.com is one of the most convenient and accurate rebate processing systems I have encountered.

Of course, once you mail in the UPC label, you don't have another one to send in. I'd pass on TD rebates and buy from Amazon or Newegg. It's well worth the few extra bucks.

In the case where you have say 3 components of the rebate. I take a picture of the items laid on the floor before putting in the envelope and make a note on the rebate form #3 items included and I take a shot of the envelope with the stamps on em and addressed.
And in any communication with them on any issues give the details of what will back your position.
Then last case, step it up to the CC block if they keep fkn with you.

Plus $10.

TDMVP73 posted it at $50, but there was that extra cashback from Discover promo around that time... Maybe that's why you're thinking it was less.

You are right sir. On 11/30 I ordered the 1TB for $79.99 with $30 MIR making it $49.99 with free shipping. With discover cashback it was about $45.

Sadly circuitcity is no more so TD = tax for me now.

My $30 rebate was declined last week. I've mailed in many rebates over the last 30+ years and I've had a problem until having to dealing with the TD rebates. I bought the item during the Christmas season. If you like TD & their rebates, go for it. I'll pass. It's not like you can't buy the same item from someplace else.

Obviously, I don't know the specifics of your situation but if you bought your items during Christmas season and only now sent the rebate for processing, the one reason for the 'declined' notice is that you're past the mandatory 30 day window to send the documents for processing.

That's not true. The deadline for my rebate was Dec. 31 and I mailed it in prior to that date. I just received the decline per an email notice last week. It was declined because I didn't include the UPC label (which was double taped in the special black box on the special form). It seems that many of us are in the same boat as far as not getting rebates due from TD. So I'm not alone in having problems with TD rebates. I been doing rebates for over 30+ year and this is the first time I've had a problem with a rebate. Keep in mind, without the UPC label you can't return the item, even if it stops working within just a few days. I'll pass on TD rebates.

No problem there, the usb ports on a netbook provide the same power as any other laptop.

The problem with your 'case' is that you are just plain wrong. As others have pointed out, rebates done through 4myrebates are reliable and convenient. I've done a couple recently and had no problems getting my rebates. On one I forgot to sign it, they notified me and gave me an extra 30 days to send in the signature.

Did you try to view a copy of your submission that can be accessed on their website? What does it look like? If you have a copy of your submission, there should be a way to re-submit but it all depends on the processing company and I do not know them at all.

I also have been doing rebates for quite some time and only once had an issue (due to my own fault; fixed by re-submitting the required document). I am not defending a merchant here; just stating the fact that almost ANY rebate that calls for an original UPC code deems the return of a product almost impossible. This is not specific to TD.

It's a shame that WD portable drives don't have standard SATA connectors inside. $55 for a 1 TB is pretty darn cheap.

Hey calistyle, you were the OP of this thread, so let me ask you something. How did you find out about these rebates? Because I also noticed when I made my purchase that the rebates were not mentioned on the product page. But I figured as long as the form existed, it should be ok. Now it looks like maybe this was never a valid offer.

It doesn't really matter when he ordered, as this $30 MIR has been a continuing rebate, just a different Offer # each time period.

TD-8481 [highspeedbackbone.net] - 01/24/13 to 01/26/13
TD-8483 [highspeedbackbone.net] - 01/27/13 to 02/02/13

As long as you ordered within one of those time frames, you should qualify for the $30 MIR.

Whether or not it was actually listed on the product page is inconsequential. TigerDirect's product pages don't always update the rebate forms properly, but if it was on 4MyRebates.com at any point in time, it's definitely valid.

It further goes to prove the point that the rebate existed since the Instruction Form is still being hosted on TigerDirect's rebate server (highspeedbackbone.net).

As I previously stated, I would recommend calling 4MyRebate first and try to get them to do a phone registration for you. Be forceful and tell them that you are unable to register online, for whatever reason, and give them the Offer Code, as mentioned in the Wiki.

If they refuse (highly unlikely), then you might want to consider your other options. My next step would be to contact TigerDirect's Customer Service, informing them of the situation, or you could choose to refuse the package or initiate a charge-back on your credit card for the $30 MIR which was supposed to be part of the deal.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me.

I ordered yesterday and can confirm 100% that calling to register for this rebate is still available (ordered the 1 TB drive). I just did it in under 10 minutes and it was relatively painless.

I just called them and the lady typed in the offer code on her computer and the offer came up for her. The offer code is still not found here from their web site. She was perplexed as to why. Anyway, she told me to call back after I receive the hard drive, which should be today according to tracking.

Same issue here... On the phone trying now... Emailed customer service for Tiger and customer service for Rebate Center...

fingers crossed... I would not have bought if the rebate was bogus

ade099 02-01-2013 10:51 AM

i had the same issue with the server not finding offer code TD-8483. i called the 800 number and was on the phone with a representative for about 5 minutes and she was able to get me registered. thanks to TDMVP for that, repped! :)

Just got off the phone with the rebate center and I was told that the manufacturer had withdrawn the rebate and that it was no longer valid.... I'm pretty pissed off... Emailed TigerDirect customer service and I will also contact WD... I never would have purchased the drive without the rebate...

And this is why I recommend disputing the charge on the credit card used for the purchase.

The rebate is part of the offer, it is part of what you are buying, and can be the ultimate consideration of why you make the purchase.

I saw your posts and decided to contact myrebates.com. Was told that the rebate was cancelled and I should call TigerDirect, which I did.

I was told by TD that they never advertised the rebate offer on their website, therefore it wasn't a valid offer. I was offered $30 store credit or return item for full refund. I told them no. I also let them know that the rebate offer was valid at some point in time as some people were able to register on the myrebates.com or through phone contact. Also asked to speak to a supervisor when the conversation with the rep was going nowhere.

End result: They refunded me $30 to my CC.

You just have to be persistent, straight, and honest. The rep I spoke to was helpful. His name was Willie Riley (not sure if you can ask to speak to him as he must likely understands the situation better after this contact).

GL TO MY FELLOW SDers!

Wow. Not cool tigerdirect. I'm going to give em a call later.

Edit: Just got off the phone with TD, and the csr told me that there will be an email heading my way soon. I'll give another update once I receive it.

bht05 02-11-2013 09:05 AM

after 35 minutes with the CSR, i finally convinced him to refund the $30 to my credit card. thanks to the earlier posters for establishing that a refund could be worked - i otherwise would have accepted a return or coupon.

Like I said earlier, as far back as when this thread started there was no mention of the rebate on the product page, at least for the 1TB drive. I've checked a couple times since then and it was never there. I was able to get my rebate registered by calling in about a week ago, but I'm not sure why this thread was moved back to hot deals. If the rebate was never listed on the product page, then TD has every right to say it was never a valid offer. This rebate deal was suspect from the beginning, and it's just causing people hassles.

i spent over an hour with a TD "head" CS supervisor with no resolution. she offered a refund or $20 TD gift card. she kept saying she wasn't allowed to b/c it was the manufacturers rebate....

i refused both, wasted an hour and now soo pissed off at them. i've spent some serious money (thanks to SD) over the last 2 years.

So far I am only being offered free return on the two drives I purchased. Anyone else having any luck?

FWIW, I just called 4MyRebate per the wiki instructions and they registered me over the phone without hesitation.

I don't really understand what your point is. The rebate offer was never "suspect"....

TigerDirect has tons of rebates going on all the time. Not every one is shown on the product page at any given time. Sometimes the system doesn't correct link the rebate to the Item #. Other times, an employee may be lazy and forget to upload the Rebate Instruction Form, but the rebate will still populate on 4MyRebate.

If it's on 4MyRebate.com, then it is valid. You don't need a Rebate Instruction Form for it to be valid, although in this case, the instruction forms were on the TigerDirect Rebate Server (highspeedbackbone.net), and are still on it as we speak. That further goes to show that they should have shown up on the product page during the offer period. They can also be used as "proof" in a charge-back situation with your credit card.

Of course, TigerDirect has the ability to withdraw an offer at any time (like any rebate sponsor), but it was valid and people were able to register for it on 4MyRebate. In fact, I called in a phone registration for another SDer just last week, so I know they can still do it if you're persistent.

TigerDirect deciding to pull online registration was a slimy move and one that they have done in the past (Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking 11.5). Don't blame the OP, blame the company... because if it wasn't for the OP, you wouldn't have found out about this deal in the first place.

Also... for the record... TigerDirect deciding to pull this offer made absolutely no sense.

I posted the 1 TB drive for $49.99 AR ($10 cheaper than this) and they still honored it.
THREAD

NOTE: My offer didn't even have a Rebate Instruction Form. It only a direct link to the rebate registration.

codeoptimist 02-19-2013 01:45 PM

I should have taken care of the rebate right away, but I figured I was still safe within the timeframe of submitting documentation. Wrong assumption on my part - I just called 4MyRebate and she said TigerDirect "canceled" the rebate early and they can no longer honor it. How nice.

I'm debating whether I should spend time fighting with TD about it or just forget about the $30.

Szyszka 02-20-2013 08:31 AM

Received my rebate card ($30 American Express) yesterday.

srichter 02-21-2013 05:33 PM

How long does it usually take 4myrebate to update the status after receiving the forms? I mailed them right when I got the hard drive and they haven't updated the status yet.

edit 2/22: What a coincidence, just got notification they received it.

edit 3/12: My card shows shipped

edit 3/15: Got my card
