anyone know if this can be upgraded to the newest android software?

Buckeyefan 1 01-31-2013 06:39 AM

Single core, and only 512mb of DDR2 ram. Pretty limited. Good brand though if you're just getting your first tablet.

dbk 01-31-2013 06:39 AM

single core

Just ordered Nook Tablet 16GB (refurbished/used) from Cowboom about the same price... should I cancel and order this ? Does anyone has used both and advice one to other ? your help is highly appreciated...Thank you..

If it had gps or bluetooth I would buy one for a dedicated Square Credit card reader unfortunately it has neither. Confused cause all the other sights says it has gps and bluetooth.

ecnica 01-31-2013 07:43 AM

Wait a few days, it was posted here yesterday at $92, so in a few days hopefully it will be down to $50 or $60, got 2 of them in October last year for $70 shipped each, kids like them. I installed ICS that I got from the Lenovo site from one of their other similar tablets and it was a bit sluggish so I restored it back to 2.3.

maskedinvader 01-31-2013 08:20 AM

can anyone confirm the specs ? does it have a gps ? also anyone here used the thing ? is it a decent table for a kid to use for light android gaming and skype ?

dougpaw57 01-31-2013 08:32 AM

I had one, it has GPS. The screen is only so-so and it doesn't support Skype, which is what I bought it for, it went back the next day.

While I cannot comment on this tablet, I purchased the same nook from cowboom last month and I have been very happy. I would not hesitate to purchase a second nook from cowboom. However, it depends on the features and what you hope to get.

For me, having a large family all with nook, I was interested in the lending abilities. Then I found out how well it plays netflix and its resolution is actually decent. The only things lacking are cameras on the nook, I would like to use it to video skype, but it doesnt have a camera to do video skype.

Jason83 01-31-2013 08:42 AM

There isn't any officially support Android other than 2.3 for this device. People have figured out how to put ICS on it by using the source/build from a newer version of this tablet, but it not officially supported like I said.

I picked this up before for from the outlet for 60 something dollars and I gave it to my sister. This tablet has a screen with poor viewing angles. It pretty slow as well on ICS. It's not a terrible tablet, but there really is just a lot better tablets out there for the money. I regretted buying it.

ridalinboy 01-31-2013 08:46 AM

not bad, i bought one, hopefully netflix runs better on it.

bjsguess 01-31-2013 08:47 AM

I know $80 is cheap but given the specs on this I would avoid. There are better options unless you absolutely cannot spend a dime over $80.

coryj 01-31-2013 08:50 AM

We got a handful of these to demo at my office and it was bar-none the worst tablet I ever used. Lenovo ruined android with their custom interface, so maybe if you can root it you can make it a more pleasant experience.

Nook blows this out of the water if you root it. the 512 ram is very limited.

Can you explain why it doesn't support Skype? Is it just buggy, or does it not run? It has a forward facing camera, so I was just wondering why it doesn't work.

It just won't run. I got it at Office Depot on a Friday night and set it up as soon as I got home. Loaded up Skype and it had no video. I bought it on a whim so I did no research first, but after I searched there were comments on Skype's own forums about it not working. It went back the next day and OD didn't even charge me the re-stocking fee after I showed them the post from Skype.

runningstill 01-31-2013 09:57 AM

these are awful...stay away! i purchased one at Frys, took it home, and it was dead on arrival. took it back the next day, then it froze up 7 days later and i had to send it back to lenovo for repair. to be fair, the repair turnaround time was quick. but it went on ebay as soon as i got it back.

if you strictly check email, this would be good. but get used to alot of "force close" errors when using apps, and forget about streaming anything or playing games all together.

Save a few bucks and get a nook color over this still a very capable tablet with a nice screen... or spend a few more bucks and get a nook tablet.. i was hoping for tegra2 when i saw this.

Or a Craig CMP741e from CVS. Worst screen ever, and mine is stuck on boot up mode. Best and worst $20 SD ever. It was fun while it worked. Fast, but screen resolution killed it, then the loop issue.

don't know about this tablet, but the nook 16gb is pretty nice after rooted and installing CM10, everything runs quite smooth and games works well, netflix works good too, just don't have a camera, which i don't care too much about

with dual-core and 1gb ram, i think the nook tablet 16gb will be better than this lenovo one.

Nook Tablet blows this away. Some have even said a rooted NT runs as smooth as the Nexus 7 (which is hard to believe). I can tell you this has the same specs as the Nook Color. Where the NC shines is with the IPS screen and support. I still use ours for news and a bowling game. It also feels more substantial than our Nexus 7 and iPad 3. But it's dated, and the 512mb of ram absolutely kills it for anything more than very basic apps. 7" is an ideal tablet size. iPad is too big IMO - my kids agree.

On the cheap, you can't beat the rooted Nook Tablet. For a high end tablet, you can't beat the Nexus 7. Just get a good protective case for the 7 and don't drop it. The glass is super thin. Not a child's toy like any of the Nooks, which are indestructible.

It has GPS. Not sure about Bluetooth because I never tried to use it. I currently Have ICS on it, but it wasn't a trivial process.

Unless you need cameras and GPS, you made a great choice. Try and get a SanDisk Ultra microSD card on sale. Then go to iamafanof.wordpress.com and download the latest JellyBean 4.2. (You can run it directly off the microSD card without rooting or touching the NT internal software.) After that you can access the Google PlayStore and download Kindle-for-android as a second book reader (to take advantage of Amazon free books). You could also download some games (such as a free 10-point multitouch piano app) to try out on the NT's dual-core processor!

Nook Color has single-core OMAP3 processor, 512MB ram, BlueTooth, It can run CM10 (JellyBean 4.1) but is hardware limited to 2-point multitouch.
Nook Tablet has dual-core OMAP4 processor, 1GB ram, No BlueTooth. It can run CM10.1 (JellyBean 4.2) If running JellyBean (or ICS) you can switch back and forth between standard 2-point, or up to 10-point mult-touch (not hardware limited).
You don't have to root a NC or a NT--the default boot device is an external microSD card. You can set up a working copy of JB4.2 by going to iamafanof.wordpress.com. (And yes, it's free.)

Other than the nook tablet with cm 10 installed on it, for about the same price. Dual cores, better cores, double the ram, pretty much superior in every respect. Even out of the box the NT would be better than this.

You'd be wise to spend your money on something better for the same price, or much better for just a little more. You'll be throwing this out in a year.

jonz 01-31-2013 05:55 PM

Is there a slick deal for the nook tablet? can it do netflix, skype?

SuperTroller 01-31-2013 06:00 PM

I really wanted to like this tablet but it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Lenovo had these for $106 right around Xmas time, I kept putting one in my basket but would never actually complete the purchase, something just wouldn't let me do it. Finally got a chance to play with one and my instincts were right. Stay away.

rnarco 01-31-2013 06:44 PM

I ended up purchasing the A2107 for $99 a few weeks back using the infamous $50 off 100 deal. That one seems a bit slow to me already (no complaints because of the price), can't imagine how bad this one is then.

mrkrad 01-31-2013 06:47 PM

its fine for the price. cameras are shit, speakers are shit, microphone is shit, bluetooth is okay, gps rocks, expansion, etc. OG nook or fire doesn't come close. this does google play legit etc.

It was $177 when it first came out but they couldn't produce enough to sell here in the usa. finally they caught up and it's not worth the $177 - but far better than the MCBUB junk by a mile.

If you can read chinese, you can probably find plenty of good roms ;) Lenovo is #1 in china man.

The main problem is android. which sucks. You can probably get a used ipad 2 for $150 and have tons of apps (especially when ios 6.1 jailbreak comes out sunday).

Watch out on refurb nooks from cowboom. I got one and it wasn't deactivated. So it was useless and cow boom couldn't do anything to fix it. I had to return it. They couldn't transfer the $9 extended warranty I bought so I made them just refund my money and I got a kindle fire.

It's b/c of all the preloaded bloatware and crap on there. If you search around I believe some other forums have a root for it that disables a lot of it, and really speeds up the tablet.

In face I had the exact same question, I ordered Nook from Cowboom grade 5 with taxes and everything it comes in $64 for my daughter, because my elder daughter has Asus TF101 so second one always fights.
Just now see this deal and thinking of getting this and cancelling Nook order, but read this post and few others on Amazon, everyone agree that Nooks is better than this in comparison. Also I could not figure out whether this tablet having SD slot or not? But Nook has SD slot, added bonus.

Thanks for the feedback everyone..After reading all the comments; I am going to stick to Nook Tablet as well...I think IdeaPad has + 2 cameras where you cannot use Skype ( so it is meaningless as I won't be taking photos :)- All the reviewers agree Nook is smoother..And I also like the Nooks form factor and stylish look.

It's a Nook Color, although I would have ponied up the extra $20 and went with the Tablet.

how was it worthless because of that? You could just make a CWM bootable sd card delete everything and install CM10 to the eMMc... believe me you are NOT missing anything on the stock firmware.

The first generation Kindle Fire is by no means a perfect device. Don't get me wrong - if it were me, I'd probably invest the extra $120 to get a Nexus 7 rather than just buy a cheap tablet. That being said, the main difference is that the Fire has a dual-core processor, while the Lenovo has a single-core. You're going to notice the difference: for most things, the Fire is going to work just fine, while the Lenovo will feel fairly sluggish. Basically, the only thing the Lenovo tablet has going for it is GPS and a webcam. I own a tablet with GPS, and I can honestly say that it is more useful than it seems at first glance; however, the truth is that without constant access to the internet, you're not going to be able to effectively utilize its most useful features. As for the camera, I'm hoping that most people have phones with 3 MP cameras. I use my tablet to take pictures, but that's only because it has a 5 MP in comparison to my phone's wimpy 3 MP. Otherwise, I would vastly prefer to take pictures with my phone. As Amazon figured out, most people don't care if they have cameras and GPS on their tablets, so they invested their money in beefing up its other features.

Looks like you get some more memory with the Lenovo tablet, but I still don't think that makes it worth it; personally, I have a 32 GB tablet, and I've never even use a fraction of that space.

Here's the link to the Best Buy tablet:

https://clearance.bestbuy.com/det...ished/2685

With the Valentine's Day codes on the homepage, you can get it for a little more than $80. Probably will run you about $90 with shipping.

Probably will run you about $90 with shipping.

thanks.

If you boot JB4.1 from the microSD card, then you won't even "see" the Nook's internal (emmc) system. So what if you WANT to run that system? Then you've got a few options. The easiest is to power off the Nook, take out the SD card and turn it on again. But if all you want is the Barnes and Noble bookstore or Reader, then you could install that as an app on your JB4.1 card (just like installing the Kindle app). Technically speaking the JB4.1 card itself is "rooted" (meaning it has super-user priviledges) so you could create a dual-boot microSD card. If you explore XDA-developers.com, you'll see that some folks have built quad-boot system (CM7, CM9, CM10, and Nook emmc). You can also "root" the internal emmc system to make other options possible. Eventually you may want to get rid of the stock B&N system and install JB4.1 (or JB4.2 if its a NT) as the internal emmc system. But please, learn about backup and recovery tools (CWM and TWRP) before going that route.

Prince01: how did you get the Nook Tablet for $64 ? did you get the Nook Color ( or the tablet ) ?

My bad, I believe I got Nook Color.

Yes, lemmings will do that.....but just goes to prove it's NOT a hot deal, it'd have been sold out in a couple hours or less!

I bought one of these late last year for $199.

It was an excellent tablet, quite snappy, connected to WiFi where my Droid
phone would not, played Netflix without a skip, etc. All around it is a great
tablet.

I returned it though after about 2 weeks. I returned it due to its price. I just didn't
feel it was worth the $200 with all the other choices out there. But at this price
I can not pass. It is an EXCELLENT all around tablet!

Thanks OP!
Thumbs U and repped.

BY THE WAY :)
For $107.40 it looks like they are selling this with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich):
Linky [lenovo.com]

So if anyone was wondering it will probably run 4.0. However, it will most likely feel
sluggish.

tyedye 02-02-2013 04:02 PM

Forgot to mention a few other important things about this tablet...

It is a REAL Google APPROVED tablet. That means that it has the
Google Market (Play) already installed. And better yet when you use
the market, your location is actually the USA. Unlike most $80 tablets.
Even if the market works, you are still in China :(

This tablet also has Adobe Flash. We all know how hard it is to make
flash work on the China tablets.

I don't get this comment at all. Why would you need either of those features if you would buy it for dedicated square use?

It DOES have GPS. It is one of its best selling points.

The GPS is a STANDALONE GPS. Meaning, that it uses satellites, not data, like most
Droids use. So it is just like the GPS in your car or your Tom Tom or Garmin. Here is the
link to the product info: Linky [lenovo.com]

Select the "Product Tour Video" tab and at about 0:45 seconds they show the clip about
the GPS. Its an actual GPS chip.

Also it DOES have bluetooth. See the specs on the Lenovo site. [lenovo.com]

Hope this helps everyone. This tablet really is kick ass for for the price. So to
all who are knocking it for single core, 512K mem, etc. Just remember that all the
tablets that do and have all that are $200+! This is ONLY $79! Shipped!

Now, Im off to buy another for a friend :)

original link [lenovo.com] shows

Bluetooth
No Bluetooth

I'm inclined to go with those specs... they do have various versions of these tablets. This refurb could really not have bluetooth...

Oh, yea it can get dangerous as you can freeze/lock up your tablet on one misstep. But if you are savvy enough, it is rewarding.

Single core does not always mean it suck, most of the time it is slow but not always. Imagine that even one core that made out of the core i7 is that good ? Don't evaluate a tablet by its cores :(

4.0 is a little clunky on it, but it runs netflix and it has bluetooth and runs essentially everything efficiently.

Yeh. But did you notice its not the refurbished, its the scratch and
dent one. That has been there the whole time but it was 107. Not
sure the difference between scratch and dent and refurbished though.

Mine came in yesterday. I ordered the refurbished. Just to let you all
know, it is in MINT condition just as new. The only difference is that
it came in a plain box :)

I got one delivered yesterday. Beautiful condition except for the sticker on the back. It hs Bluetooth and GPS. Been connect to network here since then. No instructions or guide but say its online. I downloaded two items and it has been fine. My wife bought her first game (I tried to get her on to the free ones but she wants what she wants). She likes it and my nephew is into it also. I paid about $84 delivered in California. Im happy.

woodpecker101 02-10-2013 02:56 AM

dead. not taking coupon?

mikeofarabia 02-10-2013 07:25 AM

91.14 after DOORBUSTERS coupon in my cart. I think its gone. Did I miss anything?

hw0006 02-10-2013 09:37 AM

Mine has two long scratches on the back. Other than that, everything works well. It comes with 4.0 which can be updated to 4.04 OTA. 2 out 16 GB can be installed program. So 512 MB RAM is not a problem. I rooted and optimized it. Now it runs very smoothly. My 3- year kid likes to play games and watch Youtube etc. Waiting a case from Amazon. Very worthy $84
