it appears in store deal...

wyo_vr4 02-01-2013 05:21 AM

Cool, so what's the price AC?

jmill 02-01-2013 05:50 AM

5 qts. x $9.99= $49.95
1 filter + $14.99
= $64.94
-$25
TOTAL $39.94
Math is fun! and surprisingly easy!
Really good deal on this^^^

Hilbe 02-01-2013 05:55 AM

Wish I could stack it with this:

Yea Royal purple oil and filters are in the same price range as other high-end synthetics like Mobil-1 oil and filter. I think Walmart might have it a little cheaper as these auto shops are way overpriced, but after $25 off, you won't find it cheaper anywhere else.

Jadugar 02-01-2013 07:43 AM

Royal Purple is considered a great brand. I have used them for years and never had a problem. I would do my oil changes every 4000-5000 miles. Royal Purple should be the same as Mobile-1 Extended Performance. I really suggest you don't take my word for it though and google Royal Purple. I know a bunch of people have done tests and gotten real world oil analysis done.

If I were using Royal Purple, I'd be going longer than 4-5k miles between changes.

I actually think the normal Walmart price on Mobil 1 extended performance is the same as this deal: $25 for 5-qt jug plus $15 for filter. If it's the same quality as Royal Purple, then I would only call this a slick deal if someone doesn't have a Walmart around (or if someone is partial to Royal Purple over Mobil 1)

As another person said, Royal Purple is a premium synthetic motor oil. Synthetics are always quite a bit more than conventional.

Great deal thanks Op

It's all debatable. There are hundreds of threads with back and forth arguments over it. Supposedly the Mobil 1 5w and 10w you get in jugs at walmart is not the same quality as the 0w-40 (long life euro) which runs more expensive and doesn't come in 5qt jugs (per a Mobil oil rep). This royal purple is supposed to be in line with the higher end synthetics like the 0w-40 but at the same time, is not included in the list of acceptable long life oils per Euro standards.

There are definitely die hard Royal Purple users out there that won't use anything else and for them, this is a pretty good deal.

theb8er 02-01-2013 09:59 AM

Wait, are you guys doing oil changes on synthetic Mobile 1 every 4-5k miles? I thought you can go up to 10k? I mean, it defeats the whole purpose of using synthetics over conventional if you're doing regular intervals...or am I missing something here?

Thanks for the clarification! I didn't know that. I like the price of the 5w30 Mobil 1 at Walmart, and it's high enough quality for me. However, that doesn't mean that it's good enough for everyone.

You sure can, its a myth saying that you cant switch to and from synthetic.

Personally I would just get castrol/penzoil or whatevers onsale for around $30 or less with prueone filter

Check your owners manual. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend oil changes in the 7,500 - 10,000 mile range now a days for even regular oil. Many people still go by the 3,000 mile thing which is outdated for most modern vehicles.

I have an 04 Camry and it's every 5k. I'm putting in Mobile 1 to extend it to 10k (with a oil filter change at every 5k still). I think it's sufficient. Although my BMW asks for 12k changes, I still do it at 8k-9k.

Yea more than enough for 95% of vehicles. Used those jugs up until I bought a BMW and switched for warranty purposes mainly.

Yeah that makes sense. I used to use synthetics back in the day in my built up cars. But seriously I think regular oil is better now than the syns i used back then. They are great if you actually abuse your engines but it just doesn't make sense for most people who drive regularly.

BentValve 02-01-2013 11:02 AM

Pepboys had a better deal last month (5Qt. Mobil1 and filter) for $30 and they carry 0w-40.

That's terrible for your car if you don't change the oil filter. Not to mention all that pollution from your leaking oil.

wreckonized 02-01-2013 04:37 PM

is it possible to buy 2 x 5 qt oil @ $24.95 (per 5 qt) without the filter. Royal Purple dont have filter for my cars

MilesM6321 02-01-2013 05:21 PM

The item is in the circular for $50. So $50-25 coupon? Coupon says not valid with any offers though.....

MilesM6321 02-01-2013 05:28 PM

There was a sign at the store that said $50 too. This sale is until feb 3.

Am17 02-01-2013 08:33 PM

Great deal, D.I.C. shows my oil life at 15%. Was going to buy either way so now I have reason stock up for the next year.

Nope. I tried this during the last coupon when it was $35 off for the same reason and they wouldn't let me. I tried at three different Pepboys in two different counties. You might try returning the filter for store credit afterwards and using the credit to get the filter you want though? Or you could be the oil filter fairy and get your friends filters for their cars

I'll wait until the coupon gets better... $25 off isnt too great.
Unless you combined it with $50 deal then the final total is $25, def worth it...

Someone please try..

Agreed - I use Mobil 1 5W-30 in my '08 Corolla w/ a Fram mid-range filter and only change my oil once a year.

roadbratt 02-02-2013 07:10 AM

The only oil that is better is AMSOIL, but it's hard to come by.

As far as sythetic oils go, yes, I have used it for years. Mobil 1 not even close. I can still get Amsoil for about the same locally w/o the coupon so, its all good.
PLEASE NOTE: Don't use synthetic oil in an older vehicle if you have not used synthetic oil in it before. It will most likely leak out. Even in the frigid temps, synthetic oils pour pretty smoth and quick. Try pouring regular oil in your vehicle below freezing to see what I'm talking about, its like molassas.
The seals on your older cars work just fine for conventional motor oils that you've been using, but if you switch to synthetic, it will most likely leak. An expensive, and messy mistake.
For the folks who love Purple, cheers! This is a great deal if you love this product. A friend of mine loves it. Thanks for posting OP.

shotcaller88 02-02-2013 08:08 AM

it was $30 in October. Thankfully, I still have 2 left.

TomClancy 02-02-2013 09:08 AM

Not so good of a deal... in the end I need to pay $55 compared to AAP's $30ish, even less if it's conventional.

I depends on the car/manufacture recommendations. I drive a Subaru WRX which has a turbo charged engine. Within the 5 years of owning my car, Subaru has changed their specs/recommendations twice.
It's currently at 7,500 for every oil change but a lot of owners are changing their oil far earlier. I personally think it's a waist of good oil and the only real way to know when to change the oil in YOUR car is to get an Oil Analysis to determine when to change your oil if it's that much of a big deal to know.

A lot of heat, pressure, roughness goes on inside a high performance engine so putting the right kind of oil is crucial. My car drinks Mobil 1 like it's water. Castrol Edge runs great. Lately, I've been using Shell Rotella T6 jugs. :)

cactrot 02-02-2013 05:26 PM

2011 WRX here, royal purple is overpriced.. Rotella T6 is the best but any high quality synth (M1, PP, PU) is fine... I go 6,000 on changes but I drive it like I stole it, I'd be surprised if the engine made it 100k.

Allthesame 02-02-2013 05:35 PM

Love you Royal Purple peps :woot:. I work for a company that makes the major raw material for the synthetic lubes industry. Very high markup off you guys so thanks for the big bonus you entitle us to get each year. Syn lubes are really designed for special applications such as turbines and now the newer refrigeration systems that require syn lubes for compatibility with newer refrigerants but hey who am I to complain. That's how we roll!

I noticed that my car may be burning the oil some (06 g35) because I have to add a quart after about 2500 miles (in the middle of my 5k oil changes). I'd say I probably could go longer but I just tend to play it safe and do 5k changes with the filter etc. I too am using royal purple due to the last deal on it so I am considering whether or not to get this again or just go with the costco deal on oil and buy my own filter. The nice thing about the 6 litres is obviously having the extra one to add oil in between changes.

I have to disagree. My buddy (he's an Amsoil dealer) told me the same thing. I switched my garage queen from RP to Amsoil. The vehicle is driven once every two weeks to car meets. It has a slightly, noisy lifter at start-up that quiets after a couple of seconds. With the Amsoil, the lifter was louder. I went back to RP in October. The lifter is as quiet as it was before.

A quart for every 2500 is a bit excessive, is this a new issue since using synthetic oil perhaps?

I'd clean out your pcv valve or replace it and switch to a high mileage oil that will swell areas any leak could be coming from. M1 HM is cheap enough and would probably help lessen the oil useage. A quart every 5,000 not such a big deal but two quarts every 5k on an '06 is not a great sign.

Yup, SOA replaced my tranny at 3,000 miles cause I busted it and I just replaced a clutch at 35,000 miles. They aren't built super strong, my other car was a C6 corvette and I could slam gears in that all day no problem, this car requires finesse and I'm not a finesse driver so I pay the price.

Oh wow. Just replaced my first clutch at 60k. Something about a throwout barring causing premature clutch wear. Sadly my car has been out of warranty for some time now.

my buddies camry had 125k miles on it... ran RP for 9k miles without chaning filter or oil out or adding any ..... when he changed the oil at 9k, he saved a sample and sent it int to an independent company that cahrged like 80 bux to test the oil. they sent back detailed results and it showed the expected oil change was 3k more miles.....

so in short, he could have gone 12k miles without having to change his oil without any damage...

A while back there was a pep boys coupon where you got 5 qts and a filer for 30 even..... i picked up about 200 quarts going to multiple stores over a couple weeks... o have used about half of it so far.... might take advantage of this to stock up a little more..

Royal Purple finally carries a filter for the Mazda 2.0L Skyactiv in the Mazda 3 and CX-5.
The part number is: 10-2876. This info is NOT on their website. I used a cross-reference guide. However, I am NOT sure if Pep Boys carries it. It's not listed on their website either.
