I bought my son one for Christmas and it worked for about 15 minutes before it started derailing all the time. I exchanged it and the new one lasted about 5 minutes before the locomotive wouldn't move at all anymore.

I've had mine for about 6 years with no problems. It only gets used during the month of December (goes around the tree) but with little children messing with it every day it still works great. Only problem I have is pine needles falling on the tracks :)

I got one at Christmas. Worked beautifully.

So sorry yours were not up to par. :(

Good deal. Cheapest new it's ever been is $197.

I would guess (like just about everything else in this world) quality has gone down over time to reduce costs to match competitor pricing. Toys/items are so cheaply made these days.

Wow... All 23 are sold....

I guess someone thought this was a good deal.... Prob eBay'er's going to sell them for profit.

Oh well.... I hope some end-users got them too!

Thanks

There are still some "Good Condition" ones left for only $152.... But, there is a little more risk there (the condition may not be perfect). But, it is hard to tell from Amazon's desctiption if the 'slight imperfection on the top of item" is the box or the train itself....

Either way - if you order, you can always return (for free) claiming item was NOT as described if it arrives in poor condition.

The quality went down when Lionel closed down all of its US manufacturing and went to Mexico/China. If you want a quality O train for a decent price buy MTH every time. The high end Lionel is still good but you pay for it (like $500 an engine).

d55guy 02-01-2013 07:04 AM

Great deal! I got my son a new one for Christmas this year. Works great! Both the engine and tracks are very high quality. The engine is a metal die cast piece that is very heavy and detailed. This is a set that becomes an heirloom. My old Lionel set was my dad's Christmas present when he was a kid and it will eventually get handed down to my kids.

I have never heard of anyone complaining of the quality of these, are you sure you got the big O gauge set? Or did you get the little ones?

You couldn't make a profit listing these on ebay at this price. With shipping, you'd be lucky to sell it at $200. Ebay charges final listing fees on the total sale (including the shipping charge) at 11%. Shipping alone, depending where it goes, could cost $35. Then paypal takes there cut.

Good - maybe more end-users got them.

That would be good =)

BlueOvalStangGT 02-01-2013 07:58 AM

If one wanted to spend closer to $80-100...what would I get?

G-Gauge version of this. On sale most of the time during BF for $75 at TRU or JCP. But it is plastic, it runs on batteries, and it has no smoke. I am saving for the O-Gauge, i think it is a better investment and it will last long.

sdslicker 02-01-2013 08:11 AM

Try used-good

We bought a Used-Good train last month for $171 from Amazon Warehouse Deals. There was slight damage to the packaging - some scratches on the cardboard box. The train set inside was perfectly new, complete, and worked great. There's still one of those at only $152 - even less than I paid! I wouldn't normally buy "used-good" but I would from from Amazon Warehouse Deals.

Hmmm. I dont care about the plastic (isn't this O gauge plastic?) or the smoke, but batteries sound like a bad idea.

The O gauge is die cast metal for the engine. The cars will be plastic. On the G gauge everything is plastic including the track.

damnthatsadeal 02-01-2013 10:30 AM

Any idea on manufacture date?

Billabongi 02-01-2013 10:39 AM

This is funny I need to sell mine and happened to run across this! Good deal at that price!

wakkoss 02-01-2013 10:43 AM

I had the G gauge and it was horrible. Incredibly loud and just cheap looking. I didn't even bother turning it on anymore and then sold it. I snapped up the $162 like new one from here, if it looks like hell I'll send it back. If it looks good I'll be happy. Not enough meat on the bone to resell, but for those of us that actually wanted this set, it's a good deal.

Used Like new looks like it came back. I just ordered it a minute ago and it said there were still 17 left.

arichardtx 02-01-2013 11:28 AM

I am trying to get a feeling for the 'size' of O Scale/Gauge ... can someone tell me how long the locomotive is on this set? Thanks in advance.
Also .. Thanks OP seriously considering this.

keysh2oboy 02-01-2013 11:55 AM

Glad some folks are able to use these.

Still avail.

It was the O gauge set. I bought it from Amazon and they told me that they've had numerous people return them for similar issues.

SpinControl 02-01-2013 01:58 PM

Reviews are horrible for the later versions. Reviews scaring me away. Don't want one that breaks around Christmas. Latest reviews: Bankruptcy, cheaper manufacturer, transformer issues. Sad.

Good luck to those who bought one.

Straight from wikipedia "In the United States, O gauge is defined as 1:48 (0.25 inches to the foot, "quarter inch scale" 1/4 inch equals one foot). "

Found this on ebay about this engine.

Gauge: Traditional O Gauge
Dimensions: Length: 20”
Height 3"
Minimum Curve: O-27

The first batch of the cw-80 transformers were horrible. The new ones are much better. If you get a bad one you can return to amazon or contact lionel and they will send you a new one.

Thanks. You've convinced me. I'll get one and cross my fingers.

Any specific suggestions on how to "care" for these to make them last decades? TIA

Buy a maintenace kit similar to link below. Also wipe down the metal on the tracks before and after use each year. A very slight damp cloth should suffice for most years. Use track cleaner maybe every other year.

If you really get into it buy an all in one guide to trains. I only set mine up for christmas each year and found it a great help.

^^^ great tips. Thanks

wakkoss 02-06-2013 02:34 PM

Got my $160 "Like New" set yesterday and it IS like new, other than it's missing the railing for the ass end of the caboose. I don't really want to send it back, so hopefully they can send just that part. While the train is attractive and heavy, it's definitely a crappy China build and nothing great. The bell from the less expensive plastic kit is a helluva lot nicer than the bell in the one, surprisingly.

There's a guy on eBay that sells LEDs for the set as well: Red/orange to simulate the fire at the boiler, a red LED taillight for the caboose, and an illuminated drum for the caboose. The drum isn't correct for the movie, but it's way cool nonetheless.

wakkoss 02-07-2013 11:16 AM

Ok, Amazon gave me a 10% credit of $16 to cover buying the new platform, which is about $12. Here's a link to the other lights, which I think are really awesome:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LED-Fireb...27cebe14fe

mmone3 02-07-2013 07:46 PM

I'm in the same boat with my "like new" set. Mine has a broken wheel arm on the engine and one of the cars is missing end part with the doors. The rest of the set looks to be in good shape. My first mods are to change the smoke unit to a fan type and add the "ALL ABOARD POLAR EXPRESS" sound board to one of the passenger cars.

SpinControl 02-09-2013 09:50 AM

My engine doesn't run. :(

When the transformer is engaged,
1. Lights come on in the passenger cars.
2. Whistle works.
3. Multimeter registers up to 15 volts.

Engine is silent.

mmone3 02-09-2013 08:41 PM

Spancontrol, does the front light on the engine come on when you try moving the train. Also try changing the position of the reverse switch. Amazon did drop the ball on saying these thing are like new. Mine had the return printout which stated that train stopped working after 2 day, which turned out to be false.

Sporkinum 02-09-2013 09:01 PM

I hear this train runs right through the uncanny valley.
