Awesome, thanks! FYI for bulk buyers--it looks like the coupon code can apply to multiple copies in your cart. I experimented with putting two copies in my cart, and the discount doubled to $40. I went back to 1 copy before I checked out.

So I have known about Parallels Desktop for years now, and I know it's pretty good. But does anybody have any experience between using parallel desktop and Virtual Box (by Oracle, which is free)?

ArthurThePicky 02-03-2013 06:39 AM

Parallels is a nasty company.

Once you install it on your computer, they will periodically push advertisements onto your desktop, effectively turning your Mac into their marketing channel. They provide no way to turn this off, short of calling support and raising a sufficient stink--they will then email you a patch file you can run.

Other than this, Parallels is not a bad product. But VMware is just about as good. Why reward psychopathic corporate behavior?

Roshabelle 02-03-2013 06:56 AM

Repped.

utcung 02-03-2013 07:10 AM

I used Vbox for two years with win 7, and it works pretty well. But I just moved to Parallels 7 in their last newegg rebate promo, and it is significantly faster. You can find reviews that quantify this; that's what convinced me that it was worth $10 or whatever AR.

I use Parallels very regularly and don't know what you're talking about. I very rarely get any spam either in the mail or any pop-ups from the desktop.

It does happen; I get the occasional pop-up upon launching Parallels 7 to promote the new version 8.

Steve0 02-03-2013 08:04 AM

Is there a compelling reason to upgrade from version 7 to version 8?

I do see the occassional pop up for promoting version 8. There is nothing wrong w/ that. Overall, I am very satisified w/ parallel 7 and really thinking about going to 8 w/ this deal.

Based on limited testing I see from 3rd party websites, they are suppose to be faster all around.
Perhaps should download parallel 8 and test on my macbook

There is a dual monitor bug in 7 that they will not fix for that version. Other than that, 7 is fine and I been using that for 2011 iMac.

I wont upgrade now because of how they handle that dual monitor bug, it irked me that they wont fix that bug for a version of their software that at the time was less than a year old.

For those asking about Virtual Box vs Parallels, their are two reasons to use Parallels over Vbox.

First dual monitor support. In Parallels it will work with both Monitors seamlessly.

Second, the ability to use Windows Applications as though they were part of the Mac OSX system. That way I am not switching between two Windows to use my Windows only programs while using OSX at the same time.

dealsalways 02-03-2013 10:59 AM

Any deals for the PC version? I have vmware on my mac. Could use one for my win7 machine to run linux.

also this article helped me decide between latest parallels and VMware.. it's pretty detailed and worth a read.

VirtualBox [virtualbox.org] is far better, IMO. Plus it's free.

I don't usually read ZDnet, but this article "What Sucks Worse Than Oracle's VirtualBox?" [zdnet.com] seems to be pretty spot on.

Ever since I first found out about VirtualBox I've preferred it over the competition (Parallels or VMware).

I've got Windows XP, 7, 8 and Ubuntu running in VM's on my Mac and rarely have a problem. And when I do have a rare problem, I find solutions pretty quickly via VBox forums [virtualbox.org].

Also, I'm not trying to thread crap, just stating my opinion and trying to help inform people about perfectly good free options.

In my experience retail Win7 keys can be activated twice, once online and once by phone. This is most definitely a bug though and not really a legit way to get two copies of Win7 for the price of one. If you have an OEM key it will only work on the computer it shipped with.

Does Parallels do something Virtualbox can't do for free when it comes to virtualizing linux?

is the edu email is required only for buying ? can this be registered with normal email address.

For 90% of the people out there, Vbox is just fine. Probably for Linux as well. Ars Technica had a review recently that showed in what ways Parallels is better than Vbox. And I believe that was only for running Windows inside of OSX.

I don't remember if Vbox can do it, but Parallels can run your Boot Camp partition in a VM.

hmm, I have never seen this once with P5-8

madscientist01 02-04-2013 07:57 AM

This company left a bad taste in my mouth. From Parallels 5 until the present day, people trying to run Windows using Parallels on a Mac (probably the reason most people buy Parallels!) have a problem where a Parallels process goes wild and starts consuming 99%+ of CPU. It does this even when the computer has been rebooted and Parallels hasn't been opened.

The company has known about this problem since 2009 (see all 180 complaints on their forum here [parallels.com] or Google prl_disp_service) but they do nothing to fix it except suggesting that you upgrade. Yet even Parallels 8 has this problem.

So, buy at your own risk. Very annoying for me when my computer spontaneously slows down to a crawl and the fans are spinning like crazy, only to realize that Parallels process is rearing its ugly head again.

thrustbucket 02-04-2013 08:00 AM

Even without the edu discount, at $40 this is a good deal.

I'd jump on this if I didn't already have 2 parallel licenses... then again I am considering getting a laptop and imac so ... :D

Faster, seamless integration, and notice no spamming. Id buy again if there was any use for it...

Same program. It's just an attempt to get college students and faculty to adopt software early to get them hooked and promote a dependency. Apple use to give Reed College grads a computer for the same reason.

Really? Only reed college grads?

Or just THAT ONE guy? ( did he actually graduate? )

AmanO 02-04-2013 09:33 AM

I know he was trolling, but you can run pretty much any OS on your mac than a similarly aged PC can AND OSX. You will have far superior tech support and better HW as well. You get what you pay for with macs.

How many non mac screens have you seen that do better than 1080p on a 15 inch screen?

BoingLoings 02-04-2013 09:34 AM

Anyone know if the CPU issues happens rarely? Or has anyone ever encounter this problem?

Debating whether to get it.

Since this is not bootcamp, we won't need to share ram right? Using the 2012 Macbook Air 128gb/ 4gb ram.

Proper Mission Control support was the biggie for me. In V7 it just groups all the Parallels windows together. In 8, it actually sorts them by their Windows executable.

Of course, that depends on you using Coherence mode in the first place.

Probably because there is no version 9 to upsell you on yet. Still, an ad for an upgrade (that has a don't show this again checkbox) is hardly the doing of an evil company. The previous poster's panties are in a bunch over nothing.
