4 free games (PC Digital download)

65532 Attachment(s)
This weekend GMG and Playfire will be giving away 4 PC games.

DEAL IS NOW DEAD

You only need to have a GreenManGaming.com [GreenManGaming.com] account (free) and a Playfire.com [Playfire.com] account (also free) and link them.

The 4 games are:
Each game will be available to grab on a different day for 24 hours and EVERYONE will be able to get copies, this is not a contest.

Click here [greenmangaming.com] for further details.

UPDATE (2/7):

Even more detailed information is located here [playfire.com]. Highlights:
  • Get your free game by going to GreenManGaming.com [GreenManGaming.com] and bringing up the page for the game, the cost will show as $0 on the day of the promo for that game, so just press the "Buy" button to add it to your account.
  • The games will be downloadable via the "Capsule" client (GMG's client software).
  • As long as you "Buy" the games during the promotion period, they are yours to play forever.
  • Even if you don't like one or more of the games, you can still get the game and then trade it in for credit at some future date, allowing you to maybe get a game that you DO like for free (or at a discount.)
Have fun!

Awesome. Anyone know if these will be steam keys?

Space 02-04-2013 02:04 PM

Most likely not. You will probably have to use GMG's own client "Capsule".

I hope not. If so this deal is almost worthless to me. Still free is free.

Free games are worthless? You realize Steam is still DRM right?

The capsule just is used to download the games, you dont need to have it running afterwards to play if these games use it.

February 8th at Midnight GMT = February 7th 4pm PST right?

I know. I just like using the steam client. Yes I can add a non steam game to the list but, I would have to run yet another program to make sure I have updates etc. It's just a pain and like having everything all in one place.

I used to love steam until my account got suspended (temporarily luckily).

When you realize your entire library of games can get taken away from you at their discretion, it really loses its appeal.

Why suspended?

you should have posted this a day maybe 2 prior to start date

they are not worthless.

but if you gotta have DRM.. steam is the one Id go with. its convienient and I Id hate to be buying games over again or never playing them because I forgot I had it on another of my 50 random gaming accounts if I move to another computer or something.

probably good to trade in though towards another game if they let you..

plus these are rather low rated games. probably good to trade in though towards another game.

I buy almost all my DRM games on Amazon. I can always retrieve them and if something happens I trust Amazon customer service more than Steam or whatever other DRM venders. It is also safer.

I agree %1000000000! You can always download them through Amazon, even though they provide you with Steam keys. Plus Amazon has some awesome deals!!

Also, I wanted to add that Ninja Blade is a really fun game, but you will most certainly need a controller to play. It has a lot of action and a lot of quick time events (QTEs) that are visually fraking stunning. You'll be jumping off of skyscrapers, slicing flying monsters in half, jumping off of the pieces, and running down the side of a building, only to do some more crazy things on the way down. Think Ninja Gaiden meets Asura's Wrath and you will have an idea of how it plays. It's a truly amazing game that missed a lot of press. It was made by the same people behind Dark Souls, From Software, and was never released on anything but Xbox 360, and 6 over months later, now on PC. For the low price of free, it definitely deserves a shot. I know lots of you have 10+ games in your backlog (hell, I have WAY more than that), but install it, fire it up, and see what you think. Reply and let me know!!

OP edited original post and it seems you do get the game permanently if you "buy it" at the allotted time slot. Good luck everyone!

m0rningbreakfas 02-04-2013 05:30 PM

I wonder if you'll be able to trade these games (your cdkeys) back to them for store credit like they've done in the past :O

Note that the games are only available for 24h so technically while it's a "free game," you'll lose access after the times mentioned on the website.

Should be noted in the title that each game is only available for 24h so people don't get tricked into thinking it's permanent like me :(

You can only 'buy' it for free for 24 hours, once you do it is yours forever.

If they are Capsule, get them anyways... wait a couple of months... trade it back in for GMG credit. Then you can use that credit to buy a game with Steam keys later.

I use steam for easy updates, no install problems, easy forum support and man, this sucks, but i really keep my games on steam for achievements. If there were no achievements, i would've chosen no drm. The indie scene should really create an open achievements platform.

I hate achievements I think theyre ruining games... I play something for fun gameplay and a good story, not so I get a popup telling me I pressed the x button 500 times.

The only thing this game is in common with Ninja Gaiden is the look. Everything else is 100% different.

Games are being given away in 24 hour sequences starting on Friday, Feb 8th GMT:

Zombies is available from 1200 GMT Friday 8th for 24 hours, FREE!
Ninja Blade is available from 1200 GMT Saturday 9th for 24 hours, FREE!
Unstoppable Gorg is available from 1200 GMT Sunday 10th for 24 hours, FREE!
Superstars V8 Next Challenge is available from 1200 GMT Monday 11th for 24 hours, FREE!

Quote from Greenman Gaming site:
"We'll also be ending the giveaway sequence with a competition for XBL or PSN points (winner's preference), so console gamers still stand to gain from entering!"

nyrmetros 02-04-2013 09:52 PM

The V8 supercars game might be worth it.

I'm not liking that this Playfire wants my Playstation Network/Steam account name

UPDATE 2/7/13: Apparently this requirement was change at the Playfire website. I just entered a fake Xbox account name and it said it couldn't be found and let me create an account anyway. So,

You don't have to use your real accounts names(if you don't want to)to create a Playfire account , just use a fake account name for any one of the linking account.

Some people want different things from their games. Its pretty obvious to see who the companies are listening to though. Straight forward, simplified and quick satisfaction.

I posted about my trepidation going with steam a couple of years ago after reading the somewhat draconian terms - I was worried about what would happen if I tried to use some independent content for certain games if STEAM decided they didn't "approve" of that developer/content, etc. They pretty much had cart blanche. I did NOT anticipate (silly me) them trying this in a commercial dispute, as that's often how you get the attention of regulators or lawmakers. Thanks for the info - out of curiosity did you have to cave to their strong-arming tactics, or did they actually correct the billing error. When they did, by any wild, outside chance did you get an apology? I can always be an optimist. :shake:

wonder if these games will have a $.50 trade in value after the give-a-ways are over like the other freebies on GMG.

I filed the dispute against steam with paypal since it was over a week and no reply from them about their billing error on their internal support ticket system. So, once I filed the dispute with them, they replied pretty much instantly to me and told me to drop the dispute with paypal or I will be banned. They never took the time to look over my case or to see that they screwed up, they simply wanted to get the paypal dispute removed immediately and didnt care about my issues.

So I had no choice but to follow along with them and close the dispute, forever losing my ability to dispute the transaction in the future.. After another week, the billing issue was finally fixed but they never apologized for anything they did.

Thanks for the response - can't rep you again until I spread some around. I don't know what state you are in (i.e. is the State Attorney General/Consumer Protection Agency interested in consumers, or simply making large businesses happy) but you might want to consider putting together all your info and forwarding it to them. Sort of a "thank you" present to STEAM - if anybody even goes to the trouble to send a simple query to STEAM basically asking WTF is this about, it will cost STEAM more time and effort than if they had simply properly created a system for billing disputes to begin with.

The whole thing could have been avoided if Steam had a customer service phone number to call. Steam gets a lot of praise from people about the sales and how they do DRM right, but if you ever run into a problem with the service, you soon realize its major faults and how you can lose your entire library of games at their whim.

Why I recommended turning your info over to the State Attorney General. I have ABSOLUTELY no problem with STEAM holding your digital rights to a game in arrears while a charge is in dispute concerning that specific purchase. In fact, that's exactly what I would have done during my days of running businesses (I've done it more than once).

However, holding every other prior transaction hostage simply because you dispute a charge is questionable, to say the least. I might normally recommend you also bring that up with your credit card company, many of them do not like anything that causes consumers to question the advisability to going "cashless." However, you used Paypal which has a notorious reputation. It's why I've refused to get "verified" by Paypal - the lack of legal protections for whatever account you "link." In fact I don't even have a debit card, also due to the legal protections, or lack thereof.

File the complaint. You also might try the FTC, but I used them during a VOIP shutdown several years ago, and at the time (Bush admin) they were toothless. Due to regulatory capture, I have serious doubts it's improved much. A strong State Attorney General is often the last fallback for consumer abuse these days, and as I said - in many states they are already de facto a branch of the business lobby. In fact the US Chamber of Comerce, a very pro-business lobbying group has made it their business to make sure like-minded people become judges, Attorney's General, and to make sure "model legislation" (their terminology, not mine) get's passed that heavliy limits consumer rights.

dumpav 02-06-2013 05:00 PM

do u need to give them real id in playfire?

spamdenholmr 02-06-2013 11:50 PM

Playfire wasn't detecting my gaming profiles right from the two sites I tried - but it eventually timed out and let me register anyway, so it worked out.

Thanks for the heads up, OP!

(Also, as an aside on the subject of Steam, I'm of the opinion that the service itself is solid but the customer service is garbage and has entirely too much ability to take your games away. I prefer GoG whenever possible because at least you can back up your downloads from there and play them without begging permission later.)

Baguda 02-07-2013 08:08 AM

Are they going to run out of the free games quickly each day or do they have enough to give away for everyone so we don't have to hurry? Unfortunately I will be imprisoned at work where I can't access game sites until I get home 2 hours after the sale starts tonight.

They way I read the promo, it looks like it starts at NOON GMT on the 8th (1200, as 000 would be midnight, correct?), making the start time 7 AM EST here. I have edited the wiki-clock to say just that. Anyone object?

Hmmm... You may be right, I just saw 1200 and assumed midnight, but it could be noon... I will update the OP if I can confirm.

EDIT:

Well, it does look like it is noon, so I have updated OP, sorry about the confusion. I have also updated the countdown clock, since it was incorrectly using a GMT timezone indicator and it does not support that, so I have entered the correct time in the PST timezone..

When they've done giveaways in the past I've often redeemed them very late in the giveaway period and still gotten a game. I'd assume it probably won't be a big time-pressure thing.

Yes, they will have a trade-in value, but I am not sure how much. Please check the OP, I have updated it with further information about this and other details.

BTW, these will NOT have any trade-in value. ZOMBIES showed $0 as trade-in value when bought.

Maybe you just suck at achievements? Achievements often add a level of complexity and difficulty to games that really engages us "better gamers." I've been playing games for decades at this point, and love an extra challenge here and there. Granted, some achievements are pointless and take no extra effort outside of playing normally - but then some do.

wolferoo 02-08-2013 05:14 AM

Setting up the Playfire account was a bit of a pain. GMG wouldn't let me link it immediately after creation. So I logged into playfire (and turned off email notifications, etc) and when I came back to GMG it recognized it.

NathanG 02-08-2013 06:03 AM

The music and gameplay is AMAZING for free!!! HUGE THANKS!! I bought the iOS app just to show support!

Krakn3Dfx 02-08-2013 06:17 AM

I don't know what this Playfire thing is, but I'm not giving them any of my actual gamertags from different systems. Tried to give it just XFire, which I could care less about, but it just sat spinning for like 10 minutes with no activity and eventually I just gave up. If I could get them just by being a GMG customer, that would be fine, but with this whole "sign up for new shady game service that monitors and collects all of your information", I think I'll pass.

Update: Eventually it just gave up checking, but allowed me to proceed, so I signed up since they don't require anything really other than an email address.

Why is that? Because of the horrible 8 bit graphics?? I thought the gameplay is there and although I don't really like electronica that much, the music went well with it....
Seriously it's a free game... Trying out games like this is fun, you might not like it but other people might and possibly the author(s) of the game will get some recognition...
State of the art graphics don't mean a thing without gameplay.
Gameplay is everything....;)

Did the same thing for me, I was a little leary of giving my info (facebook account/steam/xbox live id) because it usually becomes intrusive to your gaming friends and gamers HATE, absolutely HATE when others give out ways for companies to get to them. I just used an old x-fire account, they didn't find it, but then they let me link my GMG account. Said I didn't have FB so they didn't ask. Got an -email 2 minutes later and just made account, not ever needing to go back to it.

Yeah, Steam has some of the worst customer service ever. They take days to respond and they don't have the power to do anything. They wouldn't even give me new keys after I told them mine were messed up. So I basically paid for a game I can't play, and since it was part of a package of games, they couldn't give me a refund either. They know they have you by the balls cuz they have your whole steam library of games, so they just don't give 2 shits about service.

This statement was made in the Playfire blog posting (link in OP):
Quote:

What if my computer can’t play these games, or I don’t like them?

Here’s a tip - GMG lets you trade games back in, and at some point soon in the future, these games will be worth credit you can trade back in, so even if you don’t like these games, you can trade them back later on to grab money off other PC gamers, or even console games if you live in the UK.
So it appears that either this game will have a trade-in value eventually or maybe at least some of the other games will.

It could also be the case that this statement is misleading/wrong and none of them will have any trade-in value, so make your own conclusions.

Blade2000 02-08-2013 08:12 AM

Wow, these games look pretty lame (Zombies). Even free it is not worth it IMO.

sparty2304 02-08-2013 08:13 AM

These games may very well have a trade in value in the future...but never have a trade in value when free...

Thats pretty foolish to say. Better gamers? Really?
The majority of achievements fall into two categories. Normally progressing through the game and getting the achievement for just playing, or pointless time sinks, some of which take countless hours to get. I really dont care about a gamerscore or a useless number tied to my gamer tag, and Id rather spend all those hours doing something else. So, maybe you feel a sense of accomplishment for having a game drain hundreds of hours of your life to get a popup notification saying you accomplished some random goal a developer threw into the games coding at the last minute, but I certainly dont.

Nollywood 02-08-2013 08:33 AM

It explicitly says "This game cannot be traded in." Soo I don't know how we will be able to trade it in for anything in the future. I get a feeling it was just a copy and paste error on OPs behalf?

GMG never allows you to trade in free games immediately. After a few weeks, however, they may add the option. That's generally been the case in the past. Probably won't be much, I'm guessing $0.50 tops per game which would end up being $2.00 combined for all four, but at least it's something.

Should have guessed you would use the "no lifer" argument, despite the fact that it can be argued that all form of video games are wasting time since they accomplish nothing of tangible value. You forgot a third category of achievements which includes one gained by accomplishing a task that requires high dexterity and/or skill. You seem like a very casual gamer who enjoys waltzing through a game, with little or no challenge, to experience the story/gameplay - which is fine. There are others who set a higher bar for their video gaming experience and enjoy spending time working towards hard-to-get achievements, be it time sinks or technically challenging tasks or whatever.

It baffles me how one can be so closed minded to think something that is completely optional and adds a slight level of depth to the overall gameplay is ruining video games.

I consider video games a form of entertainment, like movies. Everyones entitled to do what they want with their own time. I wouldnt say its a waste of time at all as long as its not the only thing you ever do.

I never forgot about the third category. I only said the majority of achievements fall into the first two I mentioned. I wont deny that theres achievements that rely on skill alone to get. I dont exactly like waltzing through a game either with no challenge, but I dont need silly popups all over my screen telling me I got to the next level or reloaded my weapon 1000 times.

But the bottom line is pointless achievements do much more to hurt games than enhance them. People start playing to get a number next to their name that doesnt mean anything, instead of playing the game itself to enjoy the story and gameplay. Thats why we have all the lame facebook pay to win type games. People just want to see a bar fill up fast and have more points than the other person.

I have been gaming since original Atari and I see no point in playing a game for a silly badge next to my steam account. I agree that some things that give you something extra (like hitpoints/armor/extraperks) are worth it but when you have to play a game like it's a job to get bragging rights it loses it's appeal. But usually acheivements don't give you perks, side quests do. I can say that when I do get an acheivement I say to myself "cool", but I don't strive to get all of them. You guys just need to agree to disagree and move on...

I have to agree here as well. Steam customer service is absolutely worthless. Check out this screen shot regarding the new EULA...aka, "you can't sue us"

I mean come on now....you didnt even answer the man's question. Steam are you that dumb or blind? Do you always have to copy and paste all your answers with something completely different? Well anyway, Valve is in some legal battles right now with the European courts. I hope they get whats coming to them. They are the ones who dug themselves into this hole with their "zero tolerance" policy regarding....well pretty much EVERYTHING. From accounts, to extra copies, to customer service

One real positive thing about achievements is that it keeps other people who do like them playing online. I would guesstimate that at least half of the players online would not be there without achievements. Considering that I can find an online team at random at 3am on almost ANY game because people still want to go back and 100% cheevo a game, I'd say that's a pretty good thing.

And for the twerp who dropped out of Gears Of War 3 Horde mode at round 50 because he got his gunner kill cheevo, go pound salt buddy... ;)

The issue I guy I know has with achievements is that they aren't optional,as in there's no way to turn off the popups. It's really about breaking the immersion in a game, especially when they popup during a dramatic cut scene or something. Imagine going to any movie and having a pop-up complete with sound effect stating "you've watched half the movie!".

Yeah you also run into the issue with people just playing online only focusing on getting their achievements and not playing as part of the team to win. Instead of being a support class theyre running around with a knife trying to to get some knife kill achievement. I think one game even had an achievement for killing your teammates

For Steam, achievement popups can be disabled by turning off the in-game overlay. You just go into settings and uncheck "Enable Steam Community In-Game". This can even be set on a game-by-game basis, in case you want to see them in some games, but not in others. You'll still get the achievements, only they won't let you know you're getting them while playing. This will also disable the other in-game overly features like the browser and friend list, though as long as the game doesn't have issues with alt-tabbing out, you can still do that to access those from the desktop. Another option is to run Steam in offline mode, which should disable the achievements entirely.

I like achievements in many games, so long as they are implemented reasonably well. Achievements that offer additional challenge or a different way to replay a game are good. Getting an achievement just for completing a level or performing some other basic task, on the other hand, is not particularly interesting. I can see why developers include those though, since it allows them to track how far people get, and whether many players quit at a certain point, which can actually be beneficial to their future games, since it can help them identify problem areas. It also provides them with free advertising every time someone checks their "Friend Activity" page and sees that someone's been getting achievements in a particular game, so I suspect they won't be going anywhere any time soon.

Your average achievements fan:

http://lurkmore.so/images/9/94/360_Kid.jpg

Achievements can be said to cause OCD-like symptoms in those who choose to chase after them obsessively. I've always thought that, like day one DLC, such are an obnoxious development in gaming pretty much engineered to keep people addicted to a game they'd otherwise be sick of playing. Common sense ftw.

Making a game "OMG so addicting! ^o^" rather than "naturally" compelling in the long term is taking the lame, easy way out, imnsho. Don't try and talk sense to these kids...it's all they know.

Sorry... The original post was clear that each game would only be available for 24 hours, each on a different day. Is there some way that I could have made that clearer? I posted this last Monday, so there was plenty of time to find this if you were looking... Maybe I should have put each of the game names in the subject so that it was easier to find...

EDIT:
I changed the thread title to include the remaining games, hopefully this will make it easier to find.

haha I meant worth the time. No one can ever "complain" about a free game.

I got in on Zombies yesterday. All that was asked for in order to sign up was name, address and phone number. No CC/PayPal info was required.

slosha69 02-09-2013 09:45 AM

Played the game for about five minutes. It seems they didn't even try to make this game work well on the PC. It runs fine, but the menus can only be navigated with the arrow keys and they still reference the ABXY buttons which is very confusing.

Good thing it was free.

That is where it downloads the games to. You can go in there and take the .exe Setup file out and place it elsewhere in case you never want to use Capsule again.

If you open up capsule there is a settings tab, click on that and change the settings for download/install. This means you can download it on one drive and install it on another if you have more than 1 drive. I have steam on one seperate drive (just steam), all other games on another and windows on another with all other applications.

I have never been able to make a complete transaction with GMG. Is this true for anyone else? I either get "Your order is processing" for infinite time, or in this case, the "Buy Now" button does not respond. The only way I have been able to purchase from them in the past is by calling support.

I really want to like GMG, but they have been nothing but fail for me.

Update DX9 in capsule... if you do it outside of capsule, it won't work for some reason.

Also, for those wondering. Ninja Blade requires some serial that the Capsule client gives you on the first startup. Just save that serial and the install files and you don't need the capsule client to run on another machine.

xyooj 02-09-2013 06:13 PM

So.. its not working for me. Clicking "Buy" and nothing happens.

jjmai 02-09-2013 06:44 PM

How many computers can I install it on?

When your order is processing check your e-mail to see if they send you a confirmation, it always hangs up for me too all the time. Do not close the gmg window while you do this btw.

Funny, I just checked their website yesterday to see if there was any release date for this game on Xbox live (it is listed as coming soon to XBLA for the past year or so). So, I have to sign up for two more useless web accounts?

I prefer keeping all my games on my Xbox, but I guess I could use a game for my work pc.

I downloaded the Ninja Blade game and that was horrible. Not worth the effort. I'm assuming this game is just as bad. I got spoiled once with a free copy of Metro 2033 a few months ago. This is not the case with these greenman things.

BlueBeard 02-10-2013 02:11 PM

I just signed up for a greenmangaming account and got Unstoppable Gorg. I did not need to get a playfire account for this download.

duder673 02-10-2013 02:28 PM

That's what I was saying. If you played level one of Ninja Blade and Ninja Gaiden 2, you should have seen Ninja Blade copied the look. Gameplay wise, NB cannot compare, not even in the same league. IMO, NG series (besides part 3), only Itagaki games, are the best technical hack n slash games... followed by Bayonetta and nothing else.

Your original post was just fine. People need to learn how to "sticky" posts that announce game sales or other deals that have not yet started but will be active in a few hours/days or are ongoing or time limited sales.
The "sticky" option is under Thread Tools on the top right side of the screen above the posts. Sticky a deal and you won't miss the sale!

From what I just tried of it, it's terrible. Graphics are bad, but tolerable. Physics are nonexistent. Load times are the longest of ANY game I've ever played. Waste of time, took me 5X longer to sign up, download, install, and wait for game to load than I'll ever play this. No wonder it's free. Instant uninstall for me.

The racing has a simulator feel. When off road you lose control of your car easily. On the road you need to slow down to complete turns. Based on barely playing racing games, I think it is a decent racer for beginner/casual players.

I'm also having problems buying the game. When I click the Buy button I get an error message saying that I already bought the game, but when I look in my Games list, it isn't there. I haven't gotten an email about the game being purchased either.

"You've already bought this free game. Nice try though!"

I'm guessing there is a problem with their system, or the site is simply overloaded.

Same here, this is a pain. Have to sign up with this Green Man Gaming, then some Playfire site, but in order to register on the Playfire site I have to have to enter a xbox/ps3/steam/xfire ID, which I now I have to go sign up for.

I put in some bogus XFire name and eventually it just timed out and I moved forward.

I've already had a Greenmangaming account for awhile, they have some great deals, worth the time. This Playfire thing, I just gave them some bogus information and a Yahoo email account I use for spam collection.

I feel the same way. I guess one of these days I'll have to bite the bullet and try something that isn't Steam keyed, such as if I get this V8 racing game, which from the looks for it in this thread, isn't getting rave reviews.

ProfessorEd 02-11-2013 11:24 AM

Excessive Work

Lot of work. Probably a mistake.

I took the last free game just to have the option of downloading it someday (probably on a teenager's computer), and wanted to do the same for this one.

For the V8 one they wanted you to join Playfire, and then link them, which I did.
This promotion is obviously aimed at getting new users for the Playfire service and Green Man store.

They eventually timed out on Steam and let me Proceed with setting up the Playfire account, linking them, and then make the $0 purchase.

The whole process took longer than expected for what appeared a simple buy for free offer, and would not have been started if I realized all of the steps involved.

Trakanonn 02-11-2013 11:37 AM

I played a few races, I regret signing up for all that crap! The game isnt very good or realistic. Handling is bad, graphics are poor, options are minimal. what else? It's free for a reason. They're offering you free junk in exchange for your infermation and account.

Better off downloading Flatout demo for free on Steam, much more fun.

doggyworld 02-11-2013 11:55 AM

I actually kind of liked the Ninja Blade game for the 30 minutes I played it. It is annoying that the save mechanism only saves at the end of a mission though and not at various checkpoints. Not sure if I'll like the other games though.

nyrmetros 02-11-2013 03:46 PM

Comparing Ninja Blade to a racing game? I don't know anything about either game - but I assume it is a pretty apples-to-oranges comparison

I think I was in the same situation.

Bring up the game installer/manager client. It should show the game listed with a download button. Click to download the 1.5GB install file, and then click install to install it. then click play.

Played it a bit tonight. I like it. The physics are definitley cheat just a bit towards track driving lines aimed towards high hp cars (which I guess makes perfect sense for this game lol)

Game definitely is a simulation, but a very bad one. Sure you got to slow down before a turn, but it kind of ends right there.

Played tons of racing games growing up, mostly simulation. This game is a "not-fun" arcade game. The physics aren't advanced enough to be fun or realistic. And it's not goofy and arcade-y enough to fool around and have fun. Also AI sucks a lot.

And the progression system is.... very weak.
