I found a promo code for a discount on this but couldn't get it to add. Their was no spot. Gonna call them tmw when their open though.Hopefully they will honor it :)

dzap 02-04-2013 11:00 PM

Definitely the oldest iPhone you want to go back to. Don't go back to a 3G if you actually plan on using it for apps and some multi-tasking. It already lags on iOS6 for some things, but it's pretty usable.

mirai 02-04-2013 11:05 PM

The 3GS I had been using a few years ago developed random touch screen freeze problem which seem to be pretty common among 3G and 3GS so I wouldn't want a preowned one with no warranty.

karmatourer 02-04-2013 11:23 PM

Funny b/c it updates ios 6.1

Just searched and not much out there for cheaper...there was only 1 that was $85, but had a crack. Also this one comes with headphones, usb, and adapter. Showing up for me as $98. You should jump on this if you're in the market for one.

Ebay is cheaper if you put in any effort at all. Regular auctions will usually end under $80 for a non-cracked screen. I bought a 32gb 3gs on ebay last week for $100--fully functional.

If I have an ATT account already (non-iphone) can I just swap SIM and use one of these? Shut off data and use wifi only to access internet?

From AT&T's TOS, they reserve the right to add the iPhone data plan if they detect an iPhone on their network (via IMEI). If this happens in real life, I cannot answer that.

If a Macintosh 128K could run OS X 10.8, I bet a lot of people would still find it useful.

My father got away with it for 4 months before they added a $30 data plan to his bill. Then he switched back to his previous phone.

Search in Ebay for $2

fastness 02-05-2013 08:13 AM

"Violations of the DMCA [unlocking your phone] may be punished with a civil suit or, if the violation was done for commercial gain, it may be prosecuted as a criminal act," Brad Shear, a Washington, D.C.-area attorney and blogger who is an expert on social media and technology law, told ABC News. "A carrier may sue for actual damages or for statutory damages."

The worst-case scenario for an individual or civil offense could be as much as a $2,500 fine. As for those planning to profit off of the act or a criminal offense -- such as a cellphone reseller -- the fine could be as high as $500,000 and include prison time.

Did you read the docket? Here, I'll read it for you. :) 1st sentence of the last paragraph on page 20.

Quote:

The Register concluded after a review of the statutory factors that an exemption to the prohibition on circumvention of mobile phone computer programs to permit users to unlock “legacy” phones is both warranted and unlikely to harm the market for such programs.
Legacy phones is defined earlier in the page:

Quote:

“legacy” phones – i.e., used (or perhaps unused) phones previously purchased or otherwise acquired by a consumer
Unless I fail at English, it sounds to me like used phones are exempt. Besides, it's only illegal if you get caught. ;) You're not going to get caught unless you run a business unlocking brand new phones.

No you must be out of iPod Touch.

Come on people, it's an older phone, but it runs the latest iOS 6. That means that apps work. I'm not quite sure why there's so much hate for this deal. The one I got last week came in real good condition.

chaoticpinoy89 02-05-2013 08:41 AM

Two things:

You can unlock this for free through AT&T.

And I've had AT&T add a data plan to my iPhone when I didn't have a data plan.

Yeah but it's super slow and has a tiny low resolution screen

If you plan on using it on AT&T it's a dumb idea, because you'll be paying the same for a data plan as you would with a much nicer phone, meaning over the course of 1 year you only save a small percentage overall, yet get a far, far worse experience.

laidbacklarkin 02-05-2013 09:29 AM

fanbois of latest/greatest, if you could just put a sock in it, it would be appreciated. this phone was good 2 years ago and there are plenty of people with the same expectations as they did two years ago and for them, this phone works real great. no one is going into this expecting full compatibility of today's technology - people ARE aware two years is a long time in the technology world and if this didn't have a usability factor, no one would be selling it either. so with tempered expectations, its a good price for a phone that still works as a PHONE - remember that's the first function of a phone, not an app that does your laundry. and in the process provides you great features that will be usable for quite some time into the future.

These are legal to unlock. And you don't have to use AT&T. I unlock them for free at circlephone * com if you sign up for membership. Check airportal.de for 3G coverage. I have gotten 3G ROAMING on AT&T once, in Minot ND on this service and an unlocked 3GS. A fluke of some sort probably. :) If you can live with 2G/WiFi until the network rollover is complete, you're golden here.

You can get the phone unlocked via eBay but to complete the unlock you'll need to have a sim card in the iphone and connect it to iTunes. You can use any old sim card for this. Then you can get an activation kit from the prepaid carrier of your choice (T-Mobile or Straight Talk seem to be the most popular) to start a plan with them.

penniewise 02-06-2013 05:31 PM

Anyone have recommendations for eBay unlock service and a good bumper for this phone?

tyrjal 02-06-2013 05:36 PM

Ugh I couldn't get my T-Mobile SIM to work with this.. New to smart phones in general though. Was able to get it jailbroken and then paid on ebay to get it unlocked for AT&T but I didnt see any unlocking services for TMobile. Just says its an unsupported SIM and no service. Could it have something to do with my APN settings maybe? I wasn't able to access those on the default settings list so if you think it might help I can prolly download something through cydia to change it.

Costed me only $2, and they literately had a turnaround time of about 3 hours... wiped/restored the iPhone 3GS, bang got the notification from iTunes saying congrats iPhone unlocked

FYI: for all those who need a sim card, you can head to any local Apple Store and they'll provide you one for free

While 3gs's can run iOS6, they are VERY slow these days.

The absolute minimum iPhone I'd recommend to anyone would be an iPhone 4, and even that is seriously starting to show it's age. Ideally you'd want at least a 4s.

I actually just got a 3GS to develop with on ios6.1 and it is totally usable. Lag in some instances? Yes, absolutely. Is it still totally usable? Yes! I wondered why it ran ios6 so well and discovered that Apple underclocks their CPUs from their full potential on previous versions of iOS. The 3GS has the same Cortex A8 as the 4, but clocked at 833Mhz vs the 1Ghz in the 4 (but even then my search shows the 4 was under clocked to 800Mhz). It also has the same GPU as the 4 just clocked slightly slower. Reports I found said the 4 was about 11% faster than the 3GS and I can believe that considering I'm typing on it right now and it is quite a usable experience.

The RAM however is half the amount found in the 4 though so app switching isn't super great, but it's definitely quite good compared to some really crappy androids you could get for the same price.

Sent from Slickdeals App for iPhone & iPod Touch.

I just purchased some gift cards to use towards a 4 which is currently discounted nicely on GameStop.com too.

If you want a permanent unlock, check craigslist for people advertising doin it.That's what I did when I got a new phone. But on my old phone I just Jailbroke and hacktiviated(unlocked) it myself. It will stay unlocked until you need to update again. Then just re do it.Not that hard at all! Just make sure you save your SHSH and blobs. This guy will tell you excactly how to do it. All free of course :)
