One of the best tasting protein powders available however the calorie to protein ratio is higher than Optimum Nutrition. It is about 200 calories for 25 grams for Syntha-6 where as ON has 125 calories for 25 grams. I typically have double scoops of ON (50 grams) for just 50 more calories.

Alapongtai 02-05-2013 06:36 AM

got one. itll be dead soon id presume

My first time trying this kind of stuff ever! I've been going to the gym for a little over a week now! This combined with my diet and some oxy elite pro will hopefully get me where I want to be by June :) thanks and repped!

5 lbs Syntha 6 Chocolate PB : $37.99/48 scoops = $0.79 per scoop (22g protein)
5 lbs Optimum Nutrition Natural Chocolate: $52.99/71 scoops = $0.75 per scoop (24g protein)

Even at full price of 52.99, ON is still superior because of serving size. 5 lb tub of syntha 6 only has 48 scoops while 5 lb tub of ON has 71.

Syntha 6 does taste a lot better but has more calories/cholesterol/sodium. People automatically see '5 lbs' and think they are getting the same amount of protein but syntha 6 has bigger scoops

If syntha has bigger scoops then how are you comparing it to ON's scoop if they have different size scoops?

Bigger scoops with less protein in them.

iguanajm 02-05-2013 07:33 AM

tastes great, but high in calories. one reason why it tastes great.

miamijoe 02-05-2013 07:37 AM

How about a scoop of this and a scoop of ON just so I can get some PB flavor? I was going to jump on this deal, as it's been in my cart forever.

Under the Nutrition Facts, serving size is measured by scoops so you can figure out how many scoops are in a tub. You can look at the labels here:

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store...twhey.html
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/bsn/synth.html

One scoop of syntha6 is 47.2 grams(with 22g protein) while one scoop of ON is 32 grams(with 24g protein).

ON is primarily whey protein (good post-exercise, but not very anti-catabolic at other times), syntha-6 is slower acting proteins in addition to whey, also more calories so helps as a weight gainer.

For me personally, syntha-6 invariably causes fat deposition. I use other longer acting proteins and use peanuts/ almonds to assist comparatively more lean weight gain.

UMichEdu 02-05-2013 07:56 AM

Does ON taste drastically worse than Syntha?

I love the taste of Syntha but trying to get something with lower calories.

I think it depends on what you mix it with. Syntha 6's taste is definitely superior and tastes great in milk or water.

ON doesn't taste good in water, it doesn't taste terrible either (depending on what flavor). It just becomes bland. It tastes a lot better in milk, but still not as good at Syntha 6.

CaptWalrus 02-05-2013 08:50 AM

Got one! Thanks! Just a side note, last time I ordered this flavor, it had very small crunchy nuggets that did not dissolve at the bottom of every glass (unlike other flavors). A tasty inconvenience, but not big enough to stop me from buying again.

magraff 02-05-2013 09:03 AM

YES guys - the Calorie/gm of protein is MUCH higher on this stuff. Also Cholesterol and Sodium, I believe too. Do check the labels and compare. This does taste much better than the ON product, but just too many calories for me. I'm actually using the ON Natural products - taste even worse, but much less additivies. Something to look at, anyway.

Got the 5lb chocloate milkshake for $35.71!! Cheap!!

Comparison:

http://www.gnc.com/product/index....Id=3744181

piercebouge 02-05-2013 09:23 AM

I honesty like using syntha 6 as a meal replacement, 200 calories really isn't something I'd worry over too much compared to what 99% percent of people out there eat. I've always found it best to find something that taste half descent because it's easier to stick too. I had a hard time sticking to most other protein shakes because after a month or 2 of drinking it everyday I would find myself skipping it some days if I hated the taste

piercebouge 02-05-2013 09:25 AM

also vanilla is $35.71 for 5.04lbs

89titanium 02-05-2013 09:25 AM

Mehhh, whey protein concentrate (Syntha-6) is so useless IMO. Sure it tastes great, but that's because it's made of protein, carbs, and fats. It's like flavored powdered milk. You can probably find some sugar-free chocolate milk with almost the exact nutritional values. If you need a large amount of protein, whey protein isolate (like ON) is the way to go.

Thanks for the heads up, chocolate milkshake is my favorite flavor :bounce:

psyphris 02-05-2013 09:30 AM

I use protein shakes as a snake between breakfast and lunch. Will probably get this and go half and half with some chocolate protein I have that doesn't taste all that great.

My opinion on the taste is if it's for after a workout taste really doesn't matter but if I'm in the office and this is a snack to keep me from being hungry then taste is a little more important to me.

ixWILDxi 02-05-2013 09:31 AM

Syntha-6 is tasty. I went through a 2lb tub real quick. Time to go big (5lb) to get big. BRO

Completely agree on too many cals per protein. There is just too much fat/carbs in this stuff, in comparison to ON. The 5g fiber is nice, I just am not looking for a meal replacement, I love my meals haha. I take protein for just that, the protein.

I do not give a shit however about additives/natural etc etc. :)

This stuff is great if you are looking to replace a meal or two a day with it, especially when mixing with milk. If you are simply looking for a good way to add protein to your diet without sacrificing other foods much, go for some ON+water. It is really not that bad. :)

To me it isn't really a slickdeal unless you have subscribe and save. I can normally get it for around this price on http://www.allstarhealth.com. The currently have it for $39.99 and have $5.95 flat rate shipping. If you order a decent bit in advance it is a great way to go.

Meh. The point is that it's basically healthy food in powdered form. It's probably best for weight loss as meal supplements than body building.

Unless you're cutting or doing low-carb there's absolutely nothing in this that makes it unusable or detrimental for bodybuilding. It has better macros than a lot of traditional "clean" foods. I use this stuff on days I know my caloric needs are higher, or I'm craving something sweet (it's tasty enough for me to basically count as my "desert") To that end, it prevents me from "cheating" as much, so the net result is actually better than if I stuck to strictly ON or isolates.

Slayn 02-05-2013 10:09 AM

I just want to add, everyone who is comparing calories etc, remember that one scoop of ON is 32oz, one scoop of the BSN is 44oz. So you cannnot compare directly on calories. People are right through, the 32oz and 44oz scoop have the same protein give or take, but BSN seems to have more carbs and other bad stuff like cholesterol, but the BSN also has more fiber. I would say the ON is probably better but this stuff doesn't look horrible. I am sure some better experts will chime in.

You can see my sig below thru the link that I exercise everyday.

I just eat normal food. Yet I still do have lots of energy and I cant seem to loose or gain weight. I guess this is my ideal weight?

ZeroGSpaceCow 02-05-2013 10:29 AM

I got Chocolate Milkshake for $37.99 (before the 5% subscribe and save). It seems prices are changing really quick, because a couple of minutes later it was back to $52.99.

And, like others have said, the value (even at this price) is still less than other brands (slightly). There are fewer servings, even though each serving has roughly the same amount of protein. However, this has more calories overall (which may be good or bad depending on your goals), and I think this tastes better than most other protein shakes.

Cool, didn't know about the referral. However, the coupons don't stack.

I don't like this flavor nearly as much as the chocolate milkshake. This is just OK. One thing I really hate are the cookie bits in it. You barely get any into your mouth because they mostly stick the sides of the shaker. Really, just a waste.

stnrbob 02-05-2013 10:48 AM

How many of you guys who complain about calories actually know anything about nutrition?

Unless you're cutting, a few excess calories isn't bad at all. I'm willing to bet that half the people here complaining about too many calories from Syntha 6 are just spouting what they hear on the internet from other people who don't understand what they're talking about either.

In fact, unless you weigh your food out and track the macros, you have no basis to talk about what is "too many" calories.

In case you're wondering, I use both ON and Syntha 6. I tend to use ON more because it is mostly just protein and I use it at the end of the day to round out my macros. If I have a large carb deficit at the end, Syntha 6 is the way to go!

Got 4 2.91 lb tubs from vita cost for 88 came out to about 7.50 a lb vs 7.2 a lb for 2 5lb tubs which isnt bad. Wanted to try all new flavors they had.

If they have the 30$ 5lbs like they had last year ill stock up on the flavors I like for another year. Ordered 5 5 lb tubs last year and I'm on my last one.

$35.99: 5-lb Chocolate Peanut Butter: http://www.vitacost.com/bsn-synth...nut-butter

I live in Seattle so Amazon charges me taxes. I went with Vitacost because I was buying 3 tubs, and NO taxes.

Total for 2 chocolate peanut butter tubs and 1 strawberry tub was $105.81 shipped.

*(e) bates also has 6% cash back for Vitacost.

Thanks, got a chocolate milk shake and straberry milkshake for $67.66 shipped!

Even at full price of 52.99, ON is still superior because of serving size. 5 lb tub of syntha 6 only has 48 scoops while 5 lb tub of ON has 71.

Wow, that's crazy
Optimum nutrition is 81% protein by weight, and syntha-6 is only 50%. Humongous difference; that means 3 lbs of ON is equivalent to 5 pounds of this stuff. This stuff does taste pretty decent (maybe better than ON, but not by much if so), I'm glad I saw your post before I went in on this.

A "scoop" is a really arbitrary and meaningless unit of comparison; look at labels and use actual numbers for that.

Something to look at, anyway.

I use ON Natural too. I think it's the best stuff out there.
Are you people really worried about the taste? Chug it down!

When you drink 3 protein shakes a day, taste does matter. ON doesn't taste very good, but it does pack more protein and fewer calories per serving than Syntha 6.

Well yea, that would require them to prep and ship nearly immediately. The reason they give you a discount on Subscribe and Save is because they can wait and make one shipment a month. If you want it now .. pay 5% more

you don't need 1 1/2g of protein per pound of body weight.
thats what they put on the label so you think 5 shakes a day so they make more money.

If you left weight or heavy exercise to the point that you feel sore the next day . Then you will need these stuffs to repair your muscle . For the weekly thread-mill , then No.

What about yearly treadmill? Once a year (usually January where I set my resolution to go to the gym, and then never go near that place again)

Requisite 02-05-2013 11:50 AM

Probably one of the best protein powders I have ever tasted (vanilla).

idrive300 02-05-2013 11:51 AM

Those who want a killer recipe for ON Double Rich Chocolate try this:

1 scoop ON Double Rich Chocolate Whey
8 oz 1% milk
1 TBSP peanut butter
1 TBSP sugar free chocolate syrup
1 scoop instant coffee (i like to dissolve it in 1 oz hot water first)
10-12 ice cubes
Put in blender for 30 seconds.

Makes about 18oz. SO FLIPPIN DELICIOUS!
324 calories, 10g Carbs, 12g Fat, 38g Protein. I have one every morning :yummy: Compare those macros against a frappaccino!

Of course, but if you're trying to bulk up like I am, then you need more protein. I get about 120g protein from shakes a day, and another 150+ from food. I don't use protein shakes unless I'm bulking up and lifting weights 5 times a week.

These are people who are not trying to build muscle. 180-200g per day is needed for this for most of us, and 3 shakes a day is pretty common for me. 4 days a week I am out of the house from 4:00am until 8:00 at night. Convenient way to get the protein especially if you spend as much time on the run as I do.

What? It's very common for people trying to build muscle to have 3 protein shakes a day. To bulk up and gain muscle, you should be getting at least 1.5x your body weight in protein per day. Ideally you'll need to eat 4-6 small meals per day, each consisting of 30-50g protein. I try to drink 3 shakes a day so I can get more than 300g of protein from food+shakes daily. Your body can't really catabolize more than 40g protein per meal, so anything in excess of that is a waste.

Doom5 02-05-2013 12:08 PM

I was going to purchase this until I read the nutritional information -- it contains Sucralose. For me, I find Sucralose has a nasty aftertaste. I'd much rather they just put real sugar in the powder.

That's what I was saying. My post was in response to the people who were surprised to hear that someone would drink 3 shakes a day, because obviously those people are not currently trying to build muscle.

The body building industry is much like the weight loss industry -- they're both full of junk science and snake-oil.

I've tried the Strawberry Milkshake and its delicious.
Gonna try the Chocolate Peanut Butter since the review said it tastes my Reeses which is a WIN.

Sure you can get more protein per pound with ON and you feel you're getting more bang for your buck but for some taste is important and this stuff is awesome.

That article refers to the "average" person.

I'll say it again: If you're looking to bulk up and build muscle by lifting weights at least 4 times a week, you need to consume more protein in your diet (unless you're getting 300g protein from your meals a day). There is no way in hell that you're going to be able to build muscle mass by getting just 60g of protein per day like the article states.

Do you even know what a ketone body is? Our bodies use them for energy, particularly the brain during times of fasting. And as long as you are drinking 3-4 liters of water per day, then a lot of these so called "ketone toxins" will be flushed out from the body anyways.

Some real flaws in that article. Both of the bullet points for adverse affects of consuming extra protein assume that no extra exercise is added. Well DUH!! The whole reason to consume the extra protein is BECAUSE you have increased your level of exercise! :lmao:

I believe there are a lot of extra fillers in muscle milk that you really dont need. i've personally never tried it though.

shaosam 02-05-2013 12:27 PM

This is a great price for a respected brand of protein. Unfortunately I think I am mildly lactose intolerant or something because drinking this stuff always gave me the shits. I'm sticking to protein bars and BCAA powder + creatine/glutamine pills, in addition to my pre-workout supplement.

SmellyCat 02-05-2013 12:27 PM

right when you place the order, there is a option that says " need more right away " you can place a order @ the S&S price to be delivered right away ( Prime or whatnot ) - then cancel your S&S order that is set for the 25,27th or whatever group date you have set.

No. I think the "need one right now"-thing is that you get a shipment right away WITHOUT the S&S discount. Pretty sure there's no way around waiting if you want the S&S savings.

Did I mention how much I work out?
I am on a plan that actually makes sense, designed by 2 friends (a nutritionist and a personal trainer)
Simply jamming as much protein as you can into your body each day isn't effective.

Congrats. Nobody ever said just devouring as much protein as you can is effective. Lifting weights and doing cardio, getting 1.5 x your body weight in protein, eating plenty of fruits and veggies, staying away from processed foods, and drinking lots of water is effective. To each their own

Over a gram per lb. of body weight, or even lb. of lean mass, is ludicrous.

I've cut way back on protein, I find that deer antler spray is far more effective.

Not sure if I should jump on this or wait for O.N. I did recently buy a Mt Rx 100 ultrasymon for the same price awhile back on Amazon.

Instead of canceling the subscribe and save, how about you guys just keep it active? I have 3 jugs shipping to my house every 2 months and consistently pay about $38-$39 per 5lb jug (strawberry).

Rusvul 02-05-2013 02:28 PM

I still see vanilla ice cream and chocolate milkshake 5.04lb purchasable for $37.59. No subscribe and save since it is not available for immediate shipping, but still an ok price. The code for Vita deal isn't working for me unless I buy over $55, I guess you can still do the refer a friend "trick" but I decided not to bother.

check out the other slickdeals vitacost thread for strawberry at ~33 shipped.

Cancelled my Amazon order and went w/ 2 from vitacost @ $33.83 for each 5 lb strawberry milkshake. Thank you, appreciate it!

I was going to go the Vitacost route (since I'm in California), but decided to stick with Amazon because of the $5.00 Ford Promo.

I ordered the Chocolate Milk Shake and on subscribe and save it went down like this:

Item(s) Subtotal: $37.59
Shipping & Handling: $0.00
Promotion applied: -$1.88
Promotion Applied: -$5.00
-----
Total before tax: $30.71
Estimated tax to be collected: $2.46
-----
Grand Total: $33.17

The same item was 42.59 with Standard shipping at Vitacost.

I thought as long as you drink a lot of water, that's how you prevent it, how would hard workouts prevent kidney stones?

Please someone show me another deal for the mocochinno flavor one it is the BOMB!!!!!

royale 02-05-2013 09:25 PM

I went ahead and did the Amazon deal since I had a gift card balance on my amazon account. Going to wait until I receive my shipment before I cancel my subscribe & save. Great call!

slycat 02-05-2013 09:31 PM

one of the things i dislike about syntha 6 is that they will not disclose the amino acid profile quantities...so while they may call it premium, you really don't know what you're getting

the quip about competitors stealing their amino acid profile is bullshit and makes me even more suspicious that they have something to hide

the flavor is premium though, i'll give them that much

This, my friends, is what we in the bodybuilding world call "broscience" - Anecdotal evidence presented as fact by unqualified, yet confident indvidulas

Nice broscience.

StickItToEm 02-06-2013 01:03 AM

Just bought these:
Chocolate Cake Batter, 5.04 Pound for $39.27
Chocolate Milkshake, 5 Pound for $37.59

They'll ship in 1 & 2 weeks respectively but that's ok. Thanks OP.

why would you not order here http://slickdeals.net/f/5841196-5-lbs-BSN-Syntha-6-4-lbs-Isolate-6-lbs-True-Mass-Protein-Powder-32-38-More-Deals-Vitacost and get your shipment asap?

I like how OP doesn't tell other people about the better thread going on and people continue to purchase this one.

I too was wondering if this would help you lose weight? It seems as if there are a lot of articles out there that say yes?

Just ordered 2 of the 5 lbs chocolate for $65.18. Used the $10 referral code, just needed two emails to create an account. Got the free shipping over $50, so it worked out to $32.58 for one. Also used the urlhasbeenblocked link which should give me 6% back.

If you are buying more than 2, I would do separate transactions to use the $10 referral bonus.

joogle 02-06-2013 11:25 AM

i guess it can work as meal replacement but not sure unless you workout regularly.

i decided against it because i have high cholesterol and this has a bunch per serving.

Yeah, being more specific i meant protein powders in general. (I actually bought the opt nutrition that was on sale at GNC for 53.99)

Syntha 6 will obviously taste really good. Look at their carbs and fats. i do take this occasionally, but if I will allow myself that much carb and fat, I'd rather get unflavored whey or milk protein isolate then blend some fruits. That tastes so much better and natural without any aritifical aftertaste. Well,

hasibali 02-13-2013 04:10 PM

For a good deal on Optimum gold whey protein try previous SD post linkwhere you can get ON 5lbs for 43$
