Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook Tablet / Laptop-Refurbished-$831 + tax FS
I was debating between Yoga 13 and XPS 12 and finally found a great deal on XPS which helped me decide. The unit is factory certified and comes with one year full warranty with technical phone and in-home support. This might probably be the best price on a convertible ultrabook as of today. I got the second option and saved almost $500. Linky: http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnli...1&fid=1091 Select from the following options and add to cart: Intel 3rd Generation i5-3317 / 128 GB SSD / 4GB - $831 Intel 3rd Generation i7-3517U / 128 GB SSD / 8GB - $999 Intel 3rd Generation i5-3317 / 256 GB SSD / 8GB - $1039 Intel 3rd Generation i7-3517U / 256 GB SSD / 8GB - $1175 Use coupon GXV$MWKN3591V$ to get the discounted prices. Thanks Spartan05 for the coupon code. P.S: You will see couple more options on the page. I'm using my mobile to post this deal but once I'm home I'll add all the options. Feel free to update the wiki :) |

Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook Review [hothardware.com]
BACK IN STOCK - 7.22 am EST Keep refreshing. The coupon ended at 8:59 (2/8). Please note that the RAM is soldered so make sure that you pick the 8 GB one if that's what you want. You can always update the ssd on this later. Please see vandetta's post for more information n link to the YouTube video showing how to replace the ssd. http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...ostcount=8 |
Why the td? At least give a reason or post a lower price *smh*
|
Do you know if you can use Dell gift cards in the outlet? Also any opinions on this deal and pc in general
|
Great deal. Period. This probably won't last long as they usually don't want any coupons to apply to the xps 12. The last one that worked only functioned for about a day and then they stopped it saying that the xps 12 isn't "laptop" so it doesn't qualify. Thanks.
|
I was looking at getting something like this but I’m one of those that like to see the product I’m buying especially when I’m spending over $500. Also, I would like to get feedback from actual owners. What is the actual battery life on this unit? I don’t trust the mfr. spec on this since it’s almost never true in battery time.
|
My old tablet PCs were better for productivity work ( Wacom digitizer).
|
also anyone with any experience with refurbished units?

This question comes up in most Dell Outlet threads, and you'll hear the same thing from other SD'ers. Worse case scenario, they take returns easily. Some call and "complain" about their order after receiving it for the sole purpose of getting extra discounts. |
@Joe - I think it is a great laptop. I had spent a lot time with yoga 13 and surface pro (demo unit at best buy). Yoga 13 is great laptop but once you turn the screen all the way, holding the unit with the keyboard down was really odd for me. Also I felt it was a little too big n heavy to use in the tablet mode. You will really feel it once you hold it with a single hand for 5 minutes or so.
I also spent some time with surface pro 64 Gb. Though I loved it but I didn't see myself using it as my primary laptop. The screen was too small for my taste. Also attachable keyboard means that you always need to place it on a hard surface to use it. If you're in your bed or on couch, you can only use it in tablet mode. The xps satisfied all my needs. Now you might be looking for something entirely different but in all its a great laptop/tablet, so get one if you can :) |
Wow - I started typing on my.mobile when I first saw your post n didn't expect so many replies. I guess I really need this laptop quick :)
|
Thanks for all the replies everyone, hopefully there will be some units left when i get home from work. Think i'll pull the trigger on this one!
|
overpriced just for the special hinges design lmao!
|
Wow, this puts the yoga 13 back a bit. Good deal. Thanks
|
Wow, thank you! I thought it over for a few minutes but I placed an order on the i5/8gb/256gb for $1,125 total.
I've been wanting to give one of these a try and if I love it, I'll sell my iPad. If it doesn't do anything for me, I'll throw it up on Ebay and probably get what I paid for it. Thanks again! |

I didn't get any extra options, it's just what came up on the page. It was shown for $1,299 and after the discount + tax it ended up at $1,125.
I noticed that some of the prices varied for similar specs though. No big deal to me though, that's still a crazy deal. |
nice looking machine with great price. I'm a bit put off by "starting at 3.35lbs". Not that ultra for a 12'', will be a workout when held as a tablet.
Still, nice looking machine. |
I was thinking about buying a Yoga but this might be better. Just a few questions I have that perhaps someone here may be able to answer.
1) Is the SSD upgradable ? 2) How long is the real life battery life ? 3) Can this run modern games? Not expecting super high-res here but I'd like to indulge in a little gaming on the road every once in a while. |
tempting.. is the i7/8gb worth $170 more than i5/4gb config? cant decide between the two since i dont need the upgrade now but for future not sure..
|
will buy when amex sync comes with dell gift card
|
Quote:
Not sure If u pick i7, 8gb you should be more than okay with little gaming. |
Quote:

just went for the i7/8gb for 1060 shipped.
|
Quote:
1) Yes but it requires taking out about 11 tiny screws that strip easily. It uses msata which looks like a wifi card. 2) http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/2...-12-review 4:33 hr 3) It has the Intel HD Graphics 4000 which is decent I guess. Handles 1080 vids no problem on xbmc and the games on the windows store. Quote:
|
Not sure if this applies to Outlet purchases, but you get 5% back as a Dell Advantage member.
|
on the fence on this one...is the RAM upgradable? the battery is mediocre from online reviews, basic web browsing last about 5 hours.

Samsung makes the 830 SSD and you can't buy Samsung msata drives outright. Supposedly they are faster than anything out and are only available to the manufacturer. A 256gb msata hard drive you cost you around $200 on sale and I think the crucial m4 or the muskin drives are the only alternatives right now. For 175 more at least to me its worth it since if you planned to upgrade yourself it would cost you more. With the new configurations for the XPS 12 its $300 extra for the 256gb SSD included. |
well, the $175 more was for an i7/8gb/128gb. the 256gb one costs yet another $200 which is beyond my reach.
|
After a little bit of research, here's the rundown for this ultrabook:
Pros: above average SSD performance (samsung) Great build-quality good quality screen (12" 1080p, good viewing angles, 400-nits brightness, Gorilla glass) Cons: kind of heavy and thick to use in tablet mode 5 hour battery life (mediocre if not below average), battery probably being raped by the 1080p display. flaky trackpad I personally won't get this just because I need at least 7+ hours of battery life for my work, but for this price it's a great deal. I don't really see how you'll use this as a tablet just because it's so thick and heavy. But I would still recommend you to wait until 2nd-gen windows 8 tablets/ultrabooks to mature, more apps and bettery battery life. |
In the past couple of days I started to shop around for a new laptop/ultrabook to replace a horribly outdated Dell 6400. This looks like a great deal but I think that I am going to push this thing to its grave while I look around. Thanks for the great, informative posts to everyone and to the OP for finding the deal.
I love SD. TU! |
I was considering this and the Yoga and decided to go with the Yoga. Heres some quick comparisions.
Pros of the XPS: 1920x1080 versus 1600x900 Better build quality no exposed keyboard in tablet mode Smaller in size Cons: Non-upgradable RAM Hard to upgrade SSD No built-in SD reader (for additional storage) No built in HDMI Same weight but smaller screen When you close or open the screen, you might push it out of position. Seeing through the cracks between the screen and the frame is distracting. |
Overpriced.....All I see good is 1080P and Widi

are people here all of a sudden crapping money??? $1000+ for a refurbished ultrabook can't be slick.

ahhahha...the right question would be "how do they do it" :)
that is, how to crap money for 1000+ refurbished laptop! |

Beginner question: Other than being refur vs new - How are these different than the ones Dell has on their website that say they are expected to ship on March 26th?
|
Quote:
I bought the original Duo for my sister a couple years ago when it was $300 refurbished and my main complaint was the battery life and the fact that it had no video out. They kinda fixed that with the XPS 12. The weight is half of what it was with the original Duo and much more powerful than the Atom processor. The design that the yoga has, where the laptop folds in reverse is the most practical and I've seen it on a lot of convertible laptops- not a fan of the exposed keys on one side though- even though they are disabled. There's the detachable keyboard design which to me is meh, same with the 180 degree twisting screen. Also there were drawbacks with that slider design that the Sony Duo uses http://www.cnet.com/laptops/sony-...77656.html http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/1...11-review/ Arguably the "flipping" screen that Dell uses provides the most "wow" factor. It would take you longer to fold the yoga laptop in reverse w/ both hands than it does to just flip the screen on the XPS12 with one hand. But they had to sacrifice .7" to do this- since the XPS 12 is almost identical to the XPS 13. The dimensions are the same- but the XPS 12 has more bezel around the screen and so the screen is 12.5 inches. Turns out for me the 12.5 inch screen is too small to do work on all day and so I had to get an external monitor. I would have picked up the Sony Tap 20 which is basically a giant portable 20" tablet- but it is not a 1080p screen and that was the only reason I picked this up. Panasonic also has a prototype 20" tablet but they made it 4k res which is too much for me... |
I got one... hope it's a good one! I did get a notebook years ago that had intermittent crashes and got it replaced. I always wondered what they did with that.
Question: I see that this does not have an ethernet port. I will want a faster connection. Any suggestions? I'm leaning toward this: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabit-Eth...r-mr-title |

I think a lot of people are dramatizing the difficulty of changing out the SSD. As long as you have the right bits, it takes less than five minutes to swap it out; all without stripping any threads.

USB 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter http://www.monoprice.com/products...1&format=2 Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI®, DVI & DisplayPort Adapter http://www.monoprice.com/products...1&format=2 Monoprice is usually the cheapest for any kind of cables or peripherals. But I honestly haven't used the usb ethernet adapter more than a couple times. If your router is supports N wifi then its fast enough- even G wifi is faster than my ISP's capabilities. Unless you are doing a lot of uploading internally on your network (moving large files >1GB between two computers on your network) you probably wouldn't need this ethernet adapter. The DisplayPort adapter however, you would need if you want to hook up this laptop to your TV or external monitor. |
damn.. bought it 2 months ago at retail price..
great ultrabook none the less :) |

They state that the X230 is "much" better when 1) It doesn't have the tablet functionality of the XPS 12, 2) It has a 1366 x 768 screen as opposed to 1080p, 3) They come with Windows 7, not Windows 8 (Win 8 Pro costs extra,) 4) the "standard" models of the X230 do not come with SSD's, and 5) It's not even possible to get a 256gb SSD on the x230, the highest it goes is 180gb. An x230 with 8gb RAM, i5 CPU and 180gb SSD comes out to a little less than $1,400 new. The XPS 12 that I got today with 8gb RAM, i5, 256gb SSD, 1080p screen, and the functionality to use it as a tablet was $1,125 shipped. It is definitely true that there are multiple X230's on the Lenovo Outlet site for around the $700 mark. ALL of those laptops, have 4gb of RAM, non-SSD hard drives, a 1366 x 768 screen. And they can't "transform" into tablets. There is one on there that's an i5, 8gb RAM, Windows 7, and a 500gb SATA drive for $1,175. And again, it's a 1366 x 768 screen. I do not see in any way how ANY of the X230 configurations are "much better" than the XPS 12 configurations. So if that's a laptop that makes people happy, fine. So be it. But for people to run on here and act like that laptop is "much" better than the XPS 12 is ridiculous. If you aren't interested in the higher resolution screen/tablet functionality/SSD features of the XPS 12, then yes obviously something cheaper like the Lenovo could be right for you. But don't act like just because you don't care about those features, that they're worthless. |

Hmmm have an i7/8GB/256GB in my cart. Do i get that or the pro. This is more powerful for basically the same price ... but is twice as heavy and no pen ..
If there was no restocking fee, I'd order both, but .. 15% restocking fee is retarded. That's over 200 bucks on this! |

We are testing an XPS 12 for work and those pros and cons are pretty accurate. It is much bigger and bulkier than an iPad when in table mode but it can also do a lot more and has a much larger screen. It is nice to have a device that is able to utilize much more of Windows 8's functionality than a regular laptop. It would be perfect for our needs if there was a dedicated docking station available but as it stands right now only aftermarket docking stations like the Targus models will work which are unreliable and not nearly as seamless. |

I have been eying a supped up version of this specific laptop for a month or two, but the 1700 price tag was way too high. I was going to wait for a deal or wait for the new haswell chipset. This is a definite deal. Got the i7/8GB/256GB model for 1175. From the multitude of reviews this has got online, it seems like the best convertible on the market. |

Thank you! Just bought it (during my lunch hour). I also remembered that I have a Dell Financial Services account so 0% interest for 6 months! $889.60 after tax (shipping was apparently gratis)..
I was reluctant about the Surface Pro because it's a 1st gen device, plus Haswell is coming out later this year. But this XPS 12 Convertible is perfect for my needs (other than lacking a microsd slot :( ) |
Well that just saved me about $500 off retail. Thanks!
|
opted to pay the extra $170 and get the upgraded processor (i5 to i7) and ram (4gb to 8gb). should keep me satisfied for next 3 years or so....
|
Since these are low inventory items, they disappear from stock for 15 min when someone puts them in the cart to ensure supply on purchase. They then reappear when the timer runs out or when people remove them from the cart. Also, as inventory re-enters the pipeline they show up again. Most of what you are seeing is inventory moving in and out of carts.
That's why you see the inventory shifting underneath you. |
Ah, that makes sense! Thanks1
|
I'm glad I was able to help some people who were specifically looking for this laptop. I was set on buying Yoga 13 until I went to bestbuy and spent some time with Yoga and Surface Pro. And then I got my hands on XPS and I knew this is what I wanted. This Dell unit certainly does bring the best of both tablet/laptop.
Considering I was one of the early birds if not the first one on here to order this laptop, I was concerned that why the order status is still showing as 'In Production' when it really is an already built refurbished unit. I contacted dell support and when I asked them the same, I got the following response: "Once the order got placed, it goes through quality check and testing before it is ready to be shipped from Dell so that it is received in perfect shape to our customers and they get full value for their hard earned money invested in the product." Though it is a very positive response, but I'm starting to get concerned because of this: Quote:
|
And for the impatient lot like me, they can setup a text alert for when the order ships out of Dell. This will be a one time deal and you won't receive any marketing texts later (at least that's what I was told).
|
I have a little concern myself about the order being filled. Mine is "In Production" as well, periodically refreshing hoping to see that "Shipped" status lol.
I'm pretty excited to get it, I've been looking at Windows 8 tablets/convertibles for a while now and this is the only one that has really been of big interest to me. My main concerns are the weight and battery life but I'm not too concerned about the battery life as I'm not someone to sit down and use it for 4 hours+ and completely run the battery down, and while I'm sure it will feel hefty in my hands compared to an iPad, I love that I can essentially use the keyboard base as a stand for my lap while sitting down. Definitely looking forward to messing around with it and honestly if I really dislike it within the first 21 days, I'll just return it. I wish these were in stores so I could have tried it out first, but I've read enough online to think that I'll enjoy it. |
Quote:
The last deal that was going on expired because it hit the redemption limit; but if you called in your order, they would usually make exceptions. That said, I talked my friend into one and he absoluteley loves the device (Quite a steal for $700; considering what that gets you today). PS: I've placed several orders from dell outlet in the past few months; every order has hung on processing for a few days before shipping.. So dont worry, yours will get there :) |
Thanks again for posting this deal. I, too, was concerned as to why it did not ship yet but will wait as I do not think I will get any better answer than yours if I do contact them (and did setup e-mail notification for shipping).
|
@Aceweb - You're welcome. I'm glad I was able to help.
Thank you, aleki for the response. |

Dead!
|
I have been refreshing all day and finally nabbed the one that I was looking for -
Intel 3rd Generation i7-3517U / 128 GB SSD / 8GB - $999 Thanks OP! |
Will this come back anytime soon? Or is it dead for awhile.
Also anyone know/tried using the tablet mode, and how it feels (heavyness, awkward, fits right) |
Was looking at this vs the Yoga 13.
As much as I like Lenovo, I don't like the tablet mode as the keyboard is exposed at the bottom. Tent-mode is plain stupid -- why would anyone use it. The XPS 12 seems like a good alternative. |
This has me worried a little, for some reason I thought that refurbished meant that cosmetically the laptop would look like new.
"Certified Refurbished PCs are laptops and desktops that have been returned to Dell, put through the production process, and then again retested to ensure they meet all original factory specifications. Certified Refurbished systems may have some observable cosmetic blemishes, but they will not affect performance." |
In for 1, thanks OP, repped! Actually bought this last night, so yes the deal is still dead. Got a fully loaded model, and a buddy got the same with the i5. Looking forward to it to replace my 5+ year old X61 Convertible!

Yoga 13: Pros - Upgradable RAM (to 8GB) - Second slot for a SATA drive, so you can have two HDDs - HDMI port (that's not in Yoga) - Supposedly the battery can be replaced Cons - Keyboard is at the bottom when in tablet mode. Though Lenovo has a cover for it for $40. - Fan runs all the time - No backlit keyboard XPS 12 Pros - 1080p resolution, 400 nit screen compared to 900p and 300nit of Yoga - Backlit keyboard, which is not in Yoga - Supposedly built better than Yoga, but that's subjective Cons - More expensive than Yoga - 12.5" Screen (0.8" smaller than Yoga) - Non upgradable RAM - No HDMI port, but a mini-display port - Hard drive is bit harder to remove, but if you have some mechanical skills you can do it |
For some reason i just ordered a second i7/8gb/256gb model. Figured I'd get it in case I love the one i got my girlfriend and want it more than my Surface Pro. If not, they are going for 1400+ on ebay refurbished, so I'll get my money back plus some.

A few things in the Lenovo forums initially scared me off, the fan always running (reported to possibly be fixed in a future update), poor and erratic wireless connection (I experienced the erratic drops but seemingly fixed it with a driver setting change), reports of the paint chipping off very easily and the idea of holding it in tablet mode with the keys being what I hold onto on the bottom of the unit (possibly not an issue with the available case). Overall, I just felt like it was more "delicate" I guess and feel like the XPS 12 is more sturdy. Plus, for the same price as the basic Yoga I got an i7 with 8gb of ram :) |

I guess at this time, it is either a choice between a regular ultraportable laptop with great battery life or a laptop/tablet convertible. I really wanted the "tablet" option so I'll live with charging almost daily (which I pretty much do with my iPad and iPhone also). |

I really don't think weight is going to be a problem for me, it didn't feel that bad at all. Yes it's obviously heavier than an iPad, but it's not like this is a device I'm going to be holding in one hand for an hour straight, I NEVER do that with my iPad anyway. I'm either sitting on the couch, or laying in bed. And one of the things that I actually think is really cool about this device is that it already has a really good built-in stand for tablet mode....the keyboard base. So really if you're sitting in any way where you can use the base, you should rarely even have to worry about holding it when it comes to tablet mode. I'm pretty excited to get it, I'm just anxious to see how the battery holds up. I wouldn't call myself a "heavy" user, so I'm hoping that the battery holds up for my uses. I have no doubts that it will get eaten quick when I try to do things like play a game on it, but really overall it should suit my purposes fine. If you're someone who is going to use a device in a way that it needs to be on for 5 hours+ straight, then I would really hope you were close to a wall plug and not have to worry about the battery in the first place. All I know is $1,120 for this well-built device with 8gb of RAM and a 256gb SSD is a hell of a deal. And if I absolutely hate it for whatever reason, it's defective, etc, I have 21 days to return it. |
I just ordered one (i5 4GB) this morning, shows estimated delivery of 2/13. Haven't seen another in stock all day.

yeah, I am not against purchasing this way, I purchased my desktop from Dell refurb'ed in a similar deal..it's used, call it what you want but it is what it is...I did have problems with the first two, but they did take care of it.. Any way, not seeing any in stock, I did see a couple when I first came upon this thread but they weren't what i had wanted... and who pays retail for anything??? |
Quote:
Just kidding ha, that looks like a pretty good deal. I paid about 100 more for the i7 |

Step 1) go to the XPS 12 page on Dell's site, record the price Step 2) go to the Dell Outlet page and select XPS 12, record the price (or read this thread to see the prices people are getting the systems for) Step 3) compare numbers to find out how much you would be saving. |

I wouldn't necessarily call all refurbs used. Some are units returned w/o opening(shipment refused etc.). |

The exact model that I bought is $1,616.39 total if bought new. I got it for $1,117. And as someone else mentioned a "refurbished" Dell product has the same terms attached to it as a new product. If you don't think that a $500 discount is worthwhile, I guess we just disagree. |

shipped! i7/256/8 purchased on 2/5/13 and delivery tomorrow !!! ;)
|
I'm wondering if my Dell has been In Production for about 36 hours now, am I even getting a refurbished model?
Why would they have to physically produce a laptop if I ordered refurbished? Anyways, expected delivery : 2/14/2013 |

I'd be all over this if it had a discrete video card. The HD 4000 is ok, but for 900+ dollars it's a shame it doesn't have one.
A decent deal, but there will be better with Surface coming out, I think. |

I had nicked an i7 last night, fearing I wouldn't see stock in time to use the coupon and then saw an equivalent i5 this morning (8gb, 256gb just like the i7 build) so I figured I'd do a swap and save myself the $150. Only this was at 7:15CST and the call center (as I found out) doesn't open until 8am CST. Since I had to leave for work, I stuck the i5 in my cart, found a chrome extension to refresh the page every 5 minutes so it'd stay reserved and then proceeded to cancel the i7 and order the i5 when I got to work about an hour later. (Technology is fun.) Good deal.
|
My i7/256/8gb finally shipped. I ordered it on the 5th and it was intially scheduled to be delivered on the 11th, but it got delayed to the 13th.
|
Mine says shipped now!
|
Shipped, whoo hoo! 2/13 delivery date.
|
Back in stock. Keep refreshing.
Also note that the coupon expire today. |
Mine shipped, original delivery date. Why did they even send the delayed email? LOL

went through whole order process on phone, then told that Dell Business Credit cannot be used to buy something from Dell Outlet, for a $1000 order figured they would figure out a way to make that work, but they let me just hang up without ordering
|
coupon seem be dead now

Anyone who got in on this deal upgrading to Windows 8 pro??? I see the system came with regular windows 8, i'm not really sure on the added benefit on the Pro version. Any input appreaciated thanks

You can try that. I believe they extended it until february 28th, 2013. It says you have to buy a PC to get it, but they dont check it. You get an email with a code that discounts the upgrade to 14.99 |

benefits are more for enterprise/corporate setups. no real added benefit for the normal user....unless you have a domain at home or have a need for bitlocker. |
Order is shipped, will arrive 2/12/2013. Earlier than expected.
Hope everything is perfect with it, would hate to have to use the 21 day return policy! |

You have to beg for one here: http://slickdeals.net/f/5828438-S...-ACTIVATE? But you'll get one after awhile, don't be shy :shake: Don't use one that they show in posts,(problems) as too many grab it, PM someone just for a private code, much safer. ;) SF |

I better not be missing out here! Everyone's getting the Core i7 config while I'm getting only the i5... Really though, if frequency and cache size are the only differences why is everyone getting the Core i7? What are you all planning to do with the XPS 12??
Btw I checked my order: it actually shipped yesterday and is estimated to be delivered on Tuesday the 12th down from Friday the 15th! And they haven't even sent me an email yet LOL!! I'm guessing Dell wants to exceed the expectations of us Slickdealers :] As for battery life I'm not sure what you're all compaining about. According to NoteBookcheck's review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Revi...325.0.html The XPS 12 has over 9 hours at idle Over 5 hours with web browsing And Over an hour with full load. And have you even seen the battery? It's 47 Wh and it takes up ~2/3 of the entire XPS's innards. The convertible has a 86% battery rating. Please show me a Intel Core-powered convertible with longer battery life. Quote:
The Surface Pro isn't going to have discrete graphics or a Core i7 config, base price is already $899. If you want a gaming ultrabook/tablet convertible this isn't for you. You should get the Gigabyte Booktop T1125N. Nice convertible with Nvidia graphics :) Or you can stupid for the Razer Edge. |

Even notebookcheck.net noted the i7 thermal-throttled in their review. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Revi...325.0.html |

-More expensive is arbitrary. The i5, 128GB Yoga refurb deal was the same $$$ as this XPS 12 deal with the same specs. -12.5" screen, some see that as a plus -Display Port is more future-proof, and you can convert to HDMI with an adapter. Unfortunately, there is no conversion from HDMI -> Displayport. This is a plus. Somehow you listed Display Port as a con? The only con you missed was the XPS12 is 0.2" thicker. |

Quote:
XPS 12 is $831+tax Ok, so for you, $40 isn't much. Quote:
