Credit to mirage18ls for the original post here from late last year.

I went to my NH Home Depot $3409 and saw a large clearance endcap that had two of the Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless 1/4 in. Impact Driver Kit still on clearance from $299 to $74.03. The checker at the self checkout that took the security device off was amazed a the low clearance price.

Receipt attached

Maybe you will get lucky and your store still has them in stock :bounce:

I wish I could rep you 10x. I got one, though a display unit, it is practically new. Can't beat the price.

breaux124 02-05-2013 04:07 PM

Found one at my local hd but it rang up $179.

SimplerSound 02-05-2013 04:21 PM

There's 2 30 minutes away from me.. I'd hate to drive there and it not ring up for 74

Incredible deal..... Just got back from the Somersworth Home Depot and they had none.

jsweetksu 02-06-2013 06:43 AM

Picked up three at $74.03 each. They weren't in a clearance section in my store but 30 feet up on the top of a shelf hidden. Thanks OP! Repped!

spatchcock 02-06-2013 08:04 AM

For those that found them, did the inventory checker show any in stock before you went?

xcrucialsx 02-06-2013 11:39 AM

I just picked up two at 74.03 each. The tracker showed 2 in stock., after purchase it shows 0

Kaarukun 02-06-2013 12:29 PM

Amazing deal if you can get one.

Damn, I tried to snag the last 2 at #2557 in Annapolis, MD and they rang up at $149

Oh Well

If you really can't make it to a store, go ahead and call customer service and ask them to look up the SKU. Just make it as easy as possible for them to just type in some numbers so they don't spend time to check or think about the item. If you really want to be sure and understand the risk and decide it's still worth the trouble, then you can try asking someone in the department to check the shelves, but even if they find it they may decide to stash it for themselves.

Anyway, my store said 3 online, I decided to call since it was a far-off HD for me, and they said 4 in their system and confirmed $74 price. I didn't bother to have someone get eyes on a box.

I rushed over but after 40 minutes poking through tools section and even scanning top shelf in nearby sections and also getting someone to poke through the top-shelf pile of Makitas that I couldn't read from the floor, I only managed to snag 1 from that top-shelf pile of Makitas in the tool dept.

The one I got was definitely a return since it had no box, no manual/papers, and already had 1 battery installed and some light fingerprints on the driver, but I couldn't get them to discount it more, didn't feel like pressing with a manager (probably should have though, wouldn't have taken more than 5-10 minutes more). At least it still has same new warranty.

jebus, it's ridiculous how crooked all these home depot employees are... that's all i'm gonna say after my experiences tonight at two locations and coming home empty handed

good luck everyone else, whatever you do, try to keep as little information as possible away from the employees

Nothing beats using your own eyeballs. And as I also was reminded today, not everyone who comes to "help" you is a general HD employee, some of them are brand reps. A bit weird when a guy asked me what I was looking for, I told him Makita impact driver, and he goes into the Milwaukee spiel and I realize he's wearing red, not orange. Yep, use yer eyeballs.

slicksder 02-06-2013 05:47 PM

I found one, but forgot a gift card and $10 coupon at home. So they said they would hold it until I came back later in the day. Well "someone" supposedly put it back on the floor and it got sold. Not sure what the moral of the story is here. But the manager was nice enough to deduct $180 from an LXT239 set so that I got it for $130-ish with coupon and gift card.

Initially, he was going to offer me this for $74:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-2...RMHGh0701I

But it wasn't brushless. It wasn't LXT.

So, I negotiated this one instead:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-2...er_reviews

But I am concerned about some of the reviews:
Quote:

To be fair I saw this in the store when it first came in and bought it without reading the specs first. That said this thing is a big step back from their older 454 in power and speed. It's half way between a 12v and my older 454 18v in that regard. The good news is that it is small, light, and comfortable to use for long periods. The bad is that it is only maginally more usefull than some 12v's. The M12 hammerdrill for example has the same RPM, and almost as much torque in a much smaller package. It does run forever and the batterys charge quickly. You'd be hard pressed to run it down before you could fully charge a new one. However that is the only real advantage this drill has. It's a bit of an odd drill and I'm not quite sure what Makita was thinking. If you are doing a very repetative light duty task the ergonomics and runtime would are great, but as a general purpose hammerdrill it's power prevents it from being competative in the market. It also lacks the dual led and metal chuck of the 454 and has a cheaper feel to it.
The impact that comes with the kit is fine, but it's a shame they included this cheaper version instead of the 3 speed brushless they sell as a standalone model.
These really fall more within their white/black homeowner grade line, they are not truly the pro grade stuff I and other contractors have come to love. Its a shame becasue I would have loved to see what Makita could do with brushless if they put their best foot forward with it like Milwaukee and DeWalt instead of building a mass market product to a price point.
At first I thought the 2-speed versus 3-speed wasn't going to be a big deal. But apparently it is. The manager was looking for some sort of equivalent replacement, but this store didn't carry any 3-speed brushless LXT models other than the clearance model. Darn!!

And the fact this reviewer is criticizing the 18V as closer to 12V is even scarier.

Should I resell it? Keep it?

Edit: Differences:
LXT239 Impact has 0-3200 IPM and 1,420 in. lbs max torque
LXDT01 Impact has 0-3400 IPM and 1,460 max torque

Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush blah blah. In the future buy it; make sure you get 90 days return, but I don't think HD even has any exclusions. Then if you need to change your payment method/apply coupons, you can probably just bring your receipt and ask them to do a return/rebuy so you could change your payment method. Bring the stuff if you like, but probably not necessary. Just save your coupons until you're doing your actual, preferred payment method.

questioneer 02-06-2013 06:02 PM

anyone have another inventory checker?

SizableScar 02-06-2013 06:04 PM

What are peoples thoughts buying it online for $299 and then return/rebuy (putting the charge on a different credit card or other method) at a store that had it for $74 but obviously out of stock? I've done it at BB to get a $1600 LED down to $659 but not sure if it's doable at HD... any thoughts?

No harm trying. If you really want to be careful, you could return then come back next day and hope it's still there.

You did just make me realize I could probably do that for the used model that I bought.

SizableScar 02-06-2013 06:14 PM

There's a store 1 hour away from me showing 4 in stock... I think before class tomorrow I'm gonna go give it a shot without calling... I hate to waste the gas, but I'd REALLY hate to blow the deal all together

Give yourself half an hour just to search the shelves and the stores on top of the shelves if you want to make the most of the trip.

Yeah I went to one today that "had" 2 in stock and spent about 20-30 minutes with a very helpful associate, but no luck in finding it, I'm hoping with 4 in stock I'll have a better chance... we'll see and I'll report back tomorrow, if no go I'll probably but online and try return/rebuy. Thanks again OP for the find.. hopefully I can get lucky tomorrow

JediWGP 02-06-2013 07:39 PM

Found a store that showed ONE in stock - only one in the metro area - and yep, managed to find it in the upstock. I think that's why these have survived to this clearance price, they've just been left in upstock because there's not really anywhere to put them on the shelves below and some stores haven't bothered to pull them down and put them on clearance endcaps like they were probably supposed to (which is probably what happened to any that were in the regular displays when it went clearance).

Just my two cents... repped OP!

Man, just saw in the prior thread there was a free battery with purchase through December 31... shame that's not still the case!

mrbhappy 02-06-2013 08:18 PM

One of the 6 or so stores around me says two in stock. Not sure if worth the try or not....

I found one in the very top shelf. The employees seemed pretty busy (or just reluctant to help) so I grabbed a step ladder and brought it down myself.

The one I bought was a display model but it looked brand new. =]

Frustrating to have 5 in stock near me, but at $149. Know how stubborn Home Depot is on price matching, so I am not even going to make the drive.

dangears 02-07-2013 05:50 AM

Was able to pick one up last night, the store had three in stock but they were stored away. When I asked the for help, the first employee looked it up and saw it was clearance, then wanted to send me to another store. Then said it's showing that they were the only store with stock and it was showing three, so then he said someone else will help me. Waited around, no one came. My girlfriend asked another employee, he looked it up on his scanner tried looking on the regular shelf didn't see it and tried saying that it was probably one the got stolen because they get a lot of grab and runs. Didn't even bother looking on the top shelves. After another employee came around to tell us the same thing, started straining to look up on the top shelves my self, and low and behold, there goes three sitting there on the shelf and the employee is like "Oh wow he found them" ... and my girlfriend looks at me like ...

Gotta love store employees that offer such great customer service.

I just used it and it works. If you still can't get it to work, then just use the inventory checker inside a store, you should be able to look up other stores in the area from there, and it's more accurate than online.

And where would I find this inventory checker inside the store? I have never seen this in a store. It would make life so much easier on these deals since I have a store 2 minutes from me.

Hahaha, did you say anything snarky to them? I wonder they were just lazy or they were just trying to save 'em for themselves. How did you know which top shelves to look at? Just assumed the top shelves in the Makita section?

Yeah, i walked over to the area where there was a bunch of Makita items on the top shelf. I feel like they we're being lazy as well, but you can't really tell when they're get wide eyed when you bring a really good deal to their attention.

Looks like the button for the List of Stores isn't working, but the checker is working. However, none near me (southern cal)

Any store computer has access to inventory checker. Maybe there are older HD stores that don't do it, but I've been to at least 5 throughout Southern California and they all allow customers to use the computers. Ask if you've never done it. Start with customer service desk or kitchen fixtures dept., but kitchen fixtures computer may be occupied.

Good rule of thumb: always ask big stores if they have an inventory checker for customer use. Target, Walmart have dedicated kiosks, and stores with modern systems might do like HD does and have a customer-accessible area on their intranet computers.

Shopping isn't just about reading websites and looking at aisles, you should know how to ask stores about their policies and how to ask if you can check their inventory yourself if you want to avoid tipping off employees.

If you still cannot figure it out, just resign yourself to asking employees to do your lookups. Beats online inventory checkers which tend to be less accurate anyway, since employees checking in-store inventory get access to the most updated data. Up to you whether or not you trust their ability and honesty.

pleue 02-08-2013 02:13 AM

damn, tried to go to a hd near portland, OR with 2 in stock according to the inventory checker and 3 in stock according to the store and came out empty handed after searching high and low with the sales rep there (ladder up the top shelves.) If anyone bought multiple sets and is interested in selling one, please contact me, all my tools just got stolen and I'm looking to replace a few. Thanks!

jpv 02-08-2013 04:21 AM

Rather frustrating. I was told 5 of them were in stock, but were $149. A couple hours later they were all gone. They must have really been the $74. Then last night it showed 3 at another store and after a very very long pause the guy was like "yeah.....those are $79.....they are not here anymore" I am pretty sure employees nabbed the majority of these. I guess that is a benefit of the job.

Juanleeto 02-08-2013 09:02 AM

dang it guys... what did i say in an earlier post. you must not give any info to the employees if you want any shot at these. study the model number and photos of the box (google). then goto one that says they have them in stock per the online checker. check the clearance end caps first, then check all the high overstock places. if you dont see anything then they are already hidden by employees or the inventory is off. 9.9 times out of 10 they are already hidden/claimed by employees which is hilarious that they didnt just buy them already. the dam fools cant even afford them yet and are waiting for their next paycheck or a slow/lazy buddy to come pick them up or some crap. it's pretty nuts how these guys are so willing to risk their jobs over shit like this. a manager at one store insists i talk to the store manager of another store about what their employees did concerning these drills but i dont have the heart to be a part of losing someones job. i get so many deals anyway, cant win em all. oh and i did end up finally getting one yesterday. at a store that said "out of stock" on the online inventory checker. i got crazy lucky. supposedly the standard grunt employees dont get any type of discounts on those type of tools so they feel entitled to these deals.

also lets not forget this driver is best in its class, even better than the new $169 version that replaced it

Arcticat 02-08-2013 12:03 PM

Shows 2 in my store...........of course they can't find them.

caseyfriday 02-08-2013 12:06 PM

tinctorius 02-08-2013 02:13 PM

Yeah i am sure someone here really cares if your tools are stolen so they can sell you one at cost. Why bother giving excuses to get sympathy from complete strangers... Go on ebay and bid for one...

Girl looks in computer and saids...last time they sold this drill in store was 12/2012.... but store computer said they had instock 3 on hand... wasted enough of my time for deal to be no worth it...

In billings, MT. Went to store said had 4 in stock and confirmed price over phone. None to be found when I went to store. Customer service appologized and offered me $50 off of the non-brushless version of this which was nice touch! Thanks!

not necessary. Let others decide for themselves.

Just wanted to give some information on why so many stores are showing instock, but none are to be found. I just want people to know this is NOT excusing Home Depot for having inaccurate inventory. All this post is for is to give you an idea on why the stores don't have them when they show instock, and it's most likely not the "aisle monkey's" fault.

-On something like power tools, there is a huge amount of theft. Unless the counts are updated constantly, the counts on tools like this can be off by 1 or 2, to over a dozen in high theft areas. On something that comes out of the set and is placed in "Inactive" status, most Supervisors don't care anymore. They throw what they have, if any, in the overhead, and that's the end of them ever touching the SKU until it gets thrown out.

-As you all know, with clearance merchandise at HD, it goes through a series of markdowns. At most Home Depots, the stores will NEVER change the counts on clearance merchandise to accurately reflect stock. I won't go into why they do this, but it almost never happens. Additionally, the employees responsible for changing these counts are instructed by management not to change the counts to accurately reflect stock.

Because of these two things, clearance at Home Depot is an absolute crapshoot. I'm not saying it is like this at every Home Depot, but it is more common than not.

Hey, ask your mom if you can come over and play. Tell her to give you some big boy clothes this time.

No, but:

1) you never know
2) just further proved my point that he is a jerk and needs to grow up

Did home depot show they had it in stock or did you just go and look for it?

Showed 2 in stock. I found one still sealed deep in the back behind newer models, and of course the display which was still on display for testing, and pretty beat up.

Today I looked for my brother at another HD that showed no stock, and that, unfortunately was true.

Inventory shows 1 in stock at store 6834, I check store extensibly see nothing, ask customer service they say its an online exclusive. I noticed her expression when she was checking on her computer, so she'll probably buy for herself. Oh well. Good deal to those that found one!!

superdlux 02-17-2013 05:48 PM

In my experience, showing one in stock usually means the display model. You got to go and check for the what if factor, but chances are not good.

When I saw two in stock at my store, I honestly didn't have high hopes, but after about five minutes of crawling around on the floor digging through stock, lo and behold bingo!

Look every store in Utah that shows one, no luck, then i found one in a store with a $259 hand made price tag, after arguing with a cashier, a supervisor, another supervisor pretending to be the manager and a call to corporate a got it for $74. Man, that feels good. Anyway thanks OP and the slickdeals community and good luck.
