I bought this so long ago to play DayZ and I still haven't even installed the game. It's sitting with like 4 other steam/indie/amazon bundles I haven't touched.

senormoll 02-06-2013 10:11 AM

Not a bad price...same as the Steam Sale price was.

traycerb 02-06-2013 11:07 AM

isn't the standalone dayz supposed to be coming out soon?

EDIT: also with the coupon, looks to be the cheapest yet.

It is still in internal alpha testing. Hopefully it will be released to a small number of people for external alpha testing.

In short, I wouldn't expect a decently polished standalone until mid or end of 2013. I'd still pick up the game if you're interested in Day Z. It's pretty inexpensive.

Bought Arma 2: CO for $15 in December just to play DayZ. My computer barely runs it (it has high system requirements) but I still love the game. Despite my huge Xbox and Steam backlog, I can't get myself off of this game. TU and rep.

read that the two won't initially be compatible. any word on if that will eventually happen? will mod continue to receive updates in the future?

Compatible? Like people with the mod playing with people with the stand-alone? Yeah that's not going to happen. And probably once the SA comes out the mod will not be updated anymore.

CrunchBerries 02-06-2013 04:48 PM

Thanks for the coupon code. Saved me a chunk.

ben_r_ 02-06-2013 05:59 PM

Wow, great price in Arma II Combined!

Is it DRM free?

Cowbrains 02-06-2013 06:46 PM

Get this for Day Z!!!!!!!

d4zer0 02-06-2013 07:20 PM

Anyone know if you'll be able to play dayz with people on Steam? Or if you can play with people online in general?

Smonkey 02-07-2013 01:55 AM

Thanks, I just purchased the Take On Helicopters pack. If anyone is interested in knowing the digital keys you get will NOT work with, Activate a product on Steam.

3dKahuna 02-07-2013 04:25 AM

I too wonder if the Arma2 CO will activate on Steam... on to some google research.

Purchased anyways and will find out if they activate on steam later today.

Purchased Arma2 CO. Thanks OP

Also don't foget 4%cb at some other sites for gamefly

They are two separate games, I would not count on whatever compatability you're hoping for. The community has been developing updates, and I hate spreading rumors (I cant find the source) but I'm fairly sure that Rocket (lead dev) said something along the lines of (at least the community) updating the mod while creating the standalone. I believe the plan is for the mod to be more....sandboxy/experimental....while the standalone will be more streamlined developmen/changes.

They did just update the mod last week.

Cune 02-07-2013 10:40 AM

DayZ rocks. Can't wait for standalone.

I have like over 100 games and this is all i play

I gave up on steam a long time ago for dayz ... they change something and i had to do a whole new install....

dayzcommander is the way to go

lpranal 02-07-2013 11:06 AM

So I bought Arma II a while back, without realizing I needed combined operations to run Day Z... Would I be able to just buy operation arrowhead and install Day Z? or would I need to buy the "bundle"?

Yes. There's no need for you to buy the bundle.

irritatedquail 02-07-2013 12:05 PM

Does anyone know if this activates on Steam?

Been waiting for the standalone for a while, but I feel like for $12, I might as well give Day Z a try.

In for 1. Been wanting this for awhile now, and this is finally my price point. For those of you still wondering, I can confirm this does NOT work with steam. The game must be installed and downloaded from the Gamefly client.

bigkid66 02-07-2013 12:42 PM

Hmm, one of you must be mistaken re: Steam.

bobbyg27 02-07-2013 12:49 PM

I don't think these activate on Steam.

irritatedquail 02-07-2013 01:00 PM

Well, either way I should probably get this. Day Z just looks like too much fun to pass up.

Stand alone and mod are completely different. SA will use a mmo-type client-server architecture unlike the mod's current resemblence of an ad hoc network. Rocket has stated he will continue to develop the mod concurrently with the SA with the help of the community "devs" even after its release.

Dayz and steam have nothing to do with each other. Steam is a means to download and install the game. From there it utilizes Gamespy for matchmaking services. There are improved dayz server browsers out there like DayZ Commander and PlayWithSix. I prefer Dayz Commander because PWS includes support for a bunch of games/mods I will never play cluttering up the interface.

kalami 02-07-2013 01:28 PM

To answer the steam question; no this will not activate on steam. Have to D/L through gamefly download manager.

Now I have 4 different D/L managers on my machine, not quite yahoo toolbar annoyance but getting close.

Zinthar 02-07-2013 01:30 PM

This does not activate via Steam (I just purchased the Combined pack). It actually gives you two separate 24 digit keys (4 digits in the first string, 5 in the other four).

Also, my activation of the base game worked properly, but the key for Operation Arrowhead is giving me an invalid key error. I've confirmed that the key is typed correctly (as well as used the auto-copy feature from GameFly's client), so I suspect they have some bad keys in there.

This is the first time I've ever bought a digital game with a key that refused to activate, so I'm contacting GameFly support as well as Bohemia Games to figure out what went wrong.

Wookiestick 02-07-2013 01:43 PM

I briefly considered getting Dayz, but after I watched some youtube videos of gameplay, I decided not to.
DayZ has some really excellent ideas with this real world socially engineered game. For some this is fun. But just like other niche games like Minecraft it's a design that you either love or hate. The game is rife with trolls and people who do not play well with others. Player killing is rampant, but this is by design. If you know nothing about this game, just understand that it is not a premade alliance of characters fighting against the hordes of the dead like left 4 dead. People can and will shoot you for items that you have carefully collected, while others just kill to kill-- because let's face it-- when you get behind a keyboard and don't have to deal with real life consequences, people are not going to act their best.
I am not saying this is a bad game-- it's a bold new design that the mod makers have pioneered. But casual gamers may want to watch some youtube videos before they jump ship, or at least get a real life buddy to partner up with them in game.

I haven't convinced anyone that I play with to go in with me on this one; so im solo. I may very well be back to Mechwarrior Online or BF3 before the weeks out.

You realize this is all intentionally done right? It's the most realistic portrayal of a zombie apocalypse out there. The player must learn to become a good judge of character in a game where he or she may save or kill their life.

teo829 02-07-2013 03:54 PM

I just bought the Arma II Combined Operations for $24 yesterday to play the popular game DayZ. However, I regret making the purchase. The game is mediocre with its slow pace action and you will literally feel lonely playing this game. Save your money and buy Battlefield III or even Left4Dead II, those are the superior games. You have been warned.

Absolutely, that's why I (tried) to explain how it is a good game, but maybe not everyone's cup of tea. Realism for some may not be the way to go, and I was pointing out that some people are not into super competitive dog eat dog world scenarios. It's a hardcore game with harsh penalties (you die, most often by other players rather than zombies, and you lose everything you had). Look up Dayz on youtube, and you find endless videos of people acting like virtual psychopaths and killing for spite whatever they see in game. Some people like a more casual gameplay experience that doesn't involve them losing everything they had in game because a foul mouthed kid sniped them hiding in a bush.
But you know what, some people love that kind of thing and that's cool.

Zinthar 02-07-2013 04:42 PM

Update on my problems with the CD Key from OA: For whatever reason, manually patching the game to v1.60 and then 1.62 caused it to work -- either it let me bypass the activation or it just recognized that the key was valid. I installed DayZ via DayZ Commander and was promptly axed in the face by some guy who first saluted me (before summarily axing me)...

Definitely seems like a game where you want to find a [non-psychopathic] group to roll with.

Most of what you said is true, but realize that you aren't really "jumping ship," as you can go back to regular Arma anytime you want. The mod isn't permanent.

I've been playing DayZ for a while now and I'm actually part of a really cool private hive server. The admin is awesome and welcomes all players, both heroes (those who don't kill other people, but help and raise their humanity score) and bandits (those who kill and steal). New vehicles, weapons, etc are added at each 6hr server restart, and the only thing not allowed (and defended against) is hacking...which results in a server ban if the hacker happens to get by the antihacks in the first place.

The hiding in the bush scenario you described seems more like COD. The map in DayZ is huge and there are very obvious places to avoid going running down the street, lest you be sniped by said kid, or eaten by zombies who hear/see you. My advice is for this price, it's certainly worth playing to find out if you like it or not, as it's a very different experience.

Checkout some gameplay from some vets on Twtich.tv, the game is popular and popular for good reason.

Looks like several of us are having this issue, only with the Operation Arrowhead portion. I've sent an email to GameFly and Bohemia Games for help, we'll see what they say.

Looks like at least one person had success patching the game manually. Might try that tonight when I get home.

How so?

avmba 02-08-2013 01:08 PM

I wrote to support, here is the answer they gave me. Worked like a charm!

We apologize for any activation troubles you have had with Arma II: Operation Arrowhead.

We offer the patch in the GameFly Client. This patch removes the activation process. Please see the following:

After installing the game, the “Play Now” button will become a “Download Patch” button. Then when you click it, it will start downloading the patch. Once it is done, the button will change to “Install Patch,” which will run the patch file. Then it will become “Play Now” again.

(here are the instructions they gave me to do a manual update - I didn't try these since the other way worked just fine).

Bohemia Interactive also offers the patches for your game. Please see those patches on their patches page here: http://www.arma2.com/supply/game-updates

Specifically you will want to download: http://www.arma2.com/index.php?op...-1&lang=en

This page is age restricted. Please be sure you enter your birth date accurately or you will be unable to access this page.

Rather than be snarky and unhelpful, you could actually do some research yourself.

ARMA II is free, ok, but CO/Operation Arrowhead is not; this is pretty much the only reason people get this because it's required for Day Z.

Feel free to prove me wrong with a link.

andy4theherd 02-09-2013 06:29 AM

doesn't the free version of Arma have lower res textures as well?
