This router gets dismal reviews on newegg (only 2 'stars'). Most people say it is NOT really gigabit throughput at all. Plus it is NOT Simultaneous Dual Band, so, unless you are only connecting one device, that means it's meh. Yeah it's cheap, but you get what you pay for...

charms 02-06-2013 06:01 PM

Most of the issues are due to firmware, flashing the router with dd-wrt and tomato fixes the issues. Mine hasn't had any problems after 4 months.

Amazon wants $70.24!

This is the good one:

Not gigabit. Want the play hd version. FD8301

cipao 02-06-2013 06:22 PM

The price is really nice.

fyu 02-06-2013 06:24 PM

yea. no gigabit, but I believe it is simultaneous dual band, and it's got TOMATO support.

makes this an awesome budget router.

I bought one and flashed Tomato on it to give to a friend's mom. It works flawlessly.

This does not have gigabit and only with 1 USB. The F7D8301 has gigabit and 2 USB ports. Besides that they're basically the same. They're stable after flashing with other firmwares but still have limited range due to internal antenna.

Here's the original Expansys deal (model # F7D7301, rebadged F7D3301):

http://slickdeals.net/f/4625240-Thread-Renewed-Belkin-Sharemax-N300-300Mbps-802-11n-4-Port-Gigabit-Wireless-Router-w-2-USB-Ports-DD-WRT-Tomato-OpenWRT-22-Shipped

So not exactly the same model (damn Belkin has too many "almost identical" models, hard to keep track).

F7D7301 /or 3301/ IS A Gigabit I know that for sure, I have 6 of them in my house, working as switches and media servers. :)

yazyazoo 02-06-2013 07:02 PM

Got this on the Expansys deal. Flashed with DD WRT and still terrible range and speed compared to my Linksys WRT 54GL. I still couldn't stream 720p MKV on N 2.4Ghz. Re hooked the Linksys and put this away in the closet.

Just got the TP Link WDR3600 and is so much better with OpenWRT on it. Able to stream 1080p MKV rips wirelessly on either the 2.4 Ghz or 5 Ghz band on my phone.

Although the Expansys was $21 vs $40 AR for the TP Link I would never get another one. The internal antennas kill this router.

Thanks for the in depth review..:bounce:

After flashing it with tomato or dd-wrt, is this router still support simultaneous dual band?

In addition, which version of tomato or dd-wrt should i download?

That's my experience too!

ken.yong 02-07-2013 11:11 AM

How bad is the range? My area is only about 600 sq ft. Will this router suffice?

I don't need gigabit ports nor USB links. My concerns are range and signal strength.

Update (2/13/13): I finally pulled the trigger and bought this router. Very happy with the purchase even though people said F7D8301 is much better. Range is good, signal strength and throughput are both excellent. Having said that, I am a "low-tech" person. All I want is a stable router with excellent throughput.

Installed DD-WRT. If you need instructions on what to install, google "Belkin F7D4301v1 now partially supported". This is a forum thread. Go to page 17. Read RobNY posts on his F7D8302 (same requirement as F7D4302). If you need details on how to flash DD-WRT, search slickdeals "Belkin N300 Expansys" - this contains very detailed instructions.

After finishing with dd-wrt.v24-17084_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_f7d4302.bin via CFE, I changed the login name and password when prompt, go to the upgrade tab, upload dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin file and set it to "restore to default settings". Wait 10 minutes. Go to 192.168.1.1 and make sure the build (shown at upper right hand corner) is correct. Unplug the router and then plug it back in. Repeat with dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin.

its $27.99 now on amazon...is it worth it (with tomato) or better off paying 34.99 for f7d8301?

fastness 12-28-2013 08:06 PM

better off to pay 34.99 for f7d8301.

I have 3 f7d8301, flashed with tomato, working as 5G wireless bridges

Only difference is one has gigabit wired chipset, the other doesn't. They both have mediocre range and stable operation with Tomato/DD-WRT. I wouldn't pay $29.99 for an F7D8302 with the F7D8301 going for <$25 multiple times in the past.

cyclops13 02-13-2014 01:28 PM

and now its 25 bucks on amazon. thinking if its worth to get it now. my only requirement is the 5ghz band for my small apartment as the 2.4ghz is too crowded here and I get bad connection all the time..

Twitchr 02-13-2014 01:35 PM

I personally got 1 DOA one and the next one would shut off after 5 minutes, even after flashing with mini-ddwrt and then shibby tomato.

cyclops13 02-15-2014 11:28 AM

Thanks for the feedback, does not looks to be a good choice. I went ahead and ordered the WD N750 for 30 bucks on staples.
