True...their weekly ad getting worse week by week.... |
Agree with prior posts - ad sucks and let's just stick to Bluguy's thread. Anyone who posts in the other threads will be banned from next week's Staples thread.
|
why we don't go to PayPal credit card reader :D:D
|
And maybe Staples will release some good coupons in next week
like 25% back on rewards, or scratch card 50% off entire purchase I was told by Corporate, If Weekly Ad suck, then will have some good deal or good coupon If Weekly Ad best, NO more coupon  |
Yes, though it doesn't matter much this week, lets stick with BluGuy's thread so we only need to check 1 main Staples thread this week.

ETA: For anyone who has not bought the Total Defense IS or Total Defense IS Premium, these items are FAR but MIRS. Good for cashing out rewards potentially. Limit 1 of each product during the entire offer period which runs until 11/10/13. Couple that with 3 PayPal readers (if this purchase rebate is still in effect the week of 2/10) and you have $115 you can spend rewards on and get your money back. |
I expect better deals the week after as they usually have some FAR items for the President Day. I will save my rewards and gift cards for that.

Welcome to the club, Watson! :woot:
Anyone know if the buy 2 get 1 free case paper works on kiosk orders? Need to order 3 cases for work, otherwise wouldn't be bothering with this promo. One of the cases will be the Staples MP that has the $25 off q this week, a $10 case paper for the second paid case, and a 10/75 (and maybe even a 10/50 OS). If the promo works, the Staples MP is the cheapest and will probably be the free anyway, so can probably stack another case paper q on top... |

On the Rewards side, most everything is way over priced vs Amazon or elsewhere that they look to be worth half their value. :( |
I'm in my second month. I'm already $200+ toward premier. I'd be nearly halfway to $1000 if I had thought of just doubling up on all purchases and sending the mail-in rebates for my father too, who is willing to play along if I do all the work.
My problem is the making money component. It feels like every week there is scrambling to try and make $0-$25, while usually picking up a product that has a value of $0. So is this all worth it just to recycled 10 cartons more and pick up <20 extra a month? You can make money 10x faster by opening up credit cards, so it's hard to figure if this is really worth it for more than just a hobby. As a newbie here, I'm not terribly impressed with 2013...I'm hoping there is more to this game. |
Quote:
The $40/mo plus free stuff and MM is nothing to sneeze at either way. Credit cards deals are definitely more costly in the long run considering the hit to your credit score and the thousands more you'll pay later in interest on mortgage, auto loans, etc. Not worth it just to make a few hundred today. |

You do have to contend with the FAR photo papers in order to build toward Premium or to cash out Rewards. But once you make Premium, your scrambling is a lot less because you have much longer to cash out/use up Rewards, and you can plan/wait for bigger purchases instead of the tiny ones. If you are not at least a little tickled by the audacity of some of the slickest deals, and it's only about the money, I suggest there are better ways to make money for your time. But if you pick and choose only those deals that you can use or you find exciting, it would probably be much more enjoyable. BTW, I would say $200 so far is actually a pretty good start. |
If you have a family to support. Rewards are a great way to stockpile on toilet paper, paper towels, coffee, cleaning supplies, batteries, etc. You can also get pretty much all of your back to school supplies for free. I can also afford to buy the occasional electronic device I would normally skip (kindle fire, color laser printer, Roku box, etc). I make more money by the hour at work, but have more fun doing this. Kind of like a Staples scanvenger hunt for adults.
|
I just convert ink recycle reward to free after rebate
and money from rebate can cover my car insurance :P |
I am also new to this staples game and would like to know when does usually everyone recycle their inks? Wait for a better deal like double double and if nothing good comes, during the last week of the month? Also if I become premier in May this year, I will stay premier during the rest of 2013 and all of 2014, is this correct? TIA!

However as a credit card churning guy, I HAVE to point out you are dead wrong. I have made over 20K from credit card deals in the last 3 years and my credit score has hardly changed. I got 9 new cards in January, and my credit score went up. I refinanced last year and my credit score just missed their highest threshhold...it wound up literally costing me $6 . I should point out that it is nearly all manufactured spending... most months I have less than 1K real spend on my cards. Simply put, Staples is like the minor league version of card churning. I guess I'm just hoping there is more to this. For instance is there anybody in January that just bought 4 packs of 4x6 photo paper to spend their $40 reward check, and that's about all they did? |
Quote:
|
Well pretty much every card. And some more than once and multiples at the same time. The deals are always changing. For instance you can get 2 American Airline cards that will net you 100,000 miles+$300 bonus I believe. Even if you don't fly, if you know what to do, that can be turned into ~$1700. You need to be a big spender or have manufactured spend.
Not trying to get off topic, just pointing out that if you are in the Staples game to make money, there are easier and more efficient ways if you aren't doing them that require a similar skillset (organization, studying, not impulsive). Staples seems more of a hobbytype thing unless you scale it. |
Quote:
You are not off topic, I do ALL money making deals I can put my hands on. I have been eating CC bonuses along with OM and Staples MM deals plus here and there whatever pops up. But 20K in 3 years just off the CC bonuses, doesn't get digested easily. Staples gives you $36 (after ink costs) for one premier account every month. Then there are deals and coupons. Even if it averages to $40/mo/acct, that is $480/year/acct. I know all staples gamers do much more than that. MUCH MORE. |

Not exaggerating. That's all under my name, if you add 2 other people that I do these deals for (they keep the money though), we are looking at more like 35k. I'm by no means the best or most knowledgeable person at this either.
There are literally dozens of cards out there right now that will net you $250-400. Some you can get over and over again. A couple other of big deals...lets see...100K british airways miles for one purchase. Very conservatively that's $1000. Am Ex a year or two ago 100K for one card and 75K for another card. Bought $25 gap cards on 50% off sale (A LOT OF THEM) and sold them back through sites like plastic jungle. That netted me about $3000. When I was robbed last year, that pile of gap cards casually sitting right in front of the robbers faces was the most valuable thing in my house. Capital one a couple years ago matched airlines miles from another airline when you opened their card, up to 100K miles. So matched that. Keep in mind most cards have business/personal, and some you can get visa/american express version of. As far as turning 100,000 AA into $1700, I can turn it into $1400...but the cards each come with $150 hidden "bonus". As far as how to turn it into $1400, that's another story, but if you are using them to fly, they are already more valuable than that. So it can easily add up to 20K in 3 years. It seems that even if I had premier, it would be a struggle just to make 1K per year. Sadly for me, I'm short on additional mailing addresses to scale things. |

But to offer a data point - In the last two years, I've done Amex PRG for 100K, Amex Gold Biz for 100K, Citi AA Amex for 75K, Citi AA MC for 75K, Citi AA Biz for 50K, Chase United Explorer card for 65K, Citi Premier Visa for 50K, Citi Premier MC for 50K, Chase Sapphire Preferred for 50K, Chase Ink Bold for 65K, Chase Ink Plus for 50K, US Bank Visa olympics promo for 33K, Chase Freedom for 30K. I'm also on my 3rd churn of Hawaiian for 35K each. Multiply that by 2 with my wife doing the same, and we've knocked out a lot of travel and cash outs. The trick is knowing how to cash out if you don't want to travel. I found a loophole with Amex MR and used our points for a $4500 downpayment on a minivan. Used Citi bonuses to cash out directly to paying down our mortgage $2K. Traded a few bookings of international tickets for cash for a colleague. Year before, used Chase UR points at the Black Friday sale and returns to double my points worth. Chase and Discover cash out either at 0.01c a point, or you leverage it to buy gift cards at a % off.... like 25% off Staples gift cards with Discover. Opportunities are out there, but you have to be like a shark, always moving from deal to deal and searching for prey. Signup bonuses are great but it's hard not to run out of most of the juicy ones. That's where manufactured spend either with Amazon Payments, Serve, and the host of prepaid cards (Target, VisaBuxx, Paypal) offer opportunities for the patient. They finally killed the most lucrative one last week, but not before we passed the 1 million Chase UR mark between our accounts - that's a serious chunk of change there. But honestly.... we have a lot more fun doing Staples deals. You know you scored a good one when the manager won't look you in the eye :) |
Any idea when January's Rewards will be available to use???

AFAIK, all Chase CCs are not rollable. I'm also interested in knowing whether the Amex and Citi CCs are rollable.
|
Quote:
Citi thank you points can always be redeemed 1-1 via mortgage statement >- check to bank account. If you don't sell Amex, you can redeem for gift cards and in the past there have been 50% off deals. BofA can be converted to cash through bank account with them at better than 1-1. Chase if not sold is always at least 1-1 pure cash. It's not easy, but given all the hoops you guys go through to take pennies from staples, it's not really any harder and more lucrative. And there are a lot of cards out there. LIke for instance you might have heard of Chase Ink card offering $500 bonus. What you might not know is that there are actually 4 versions of the card |

The cc game keeps changing. Some years ago it was profitable to take balance transfers at 0% and no fees and redeposit that money in a 5% money market account. You have to be willing to adjust. Low interest rates and balance transfers fees have pretty much killed that game. The Staples game changes as well. In 2010 they were paying $3/cart. Before that there was even more profit opportunity but that was before I got in the game. |

I have a question.
I have a credit card that has a contract price on it. Will staples rewards specials be given back? I know coupons dont work, but can't remember on previous purchases if they worked. Edit: Never mind. I went back and check and here is how it works with contract cards. Good thing is my work lets me put in as many cards as we want to get the discounts, so I have one personal and one work card. %off coupons and $off coupons do not work with the credit card if it is on a contract. Rewards and Bonus rewards do work at full percentages. |

Question for the veterans:
There is another coupon this week for $25 off a case of Staples MP paper (513096). There is also a rebate for BOGO for online purchases, but it is an "up to $49.99" rebate. Have they ever had this type of rebate before? Is it enforced like the BTS rebates? And how is it enforced? My thoughts are that one could do a kiosk order, convince the cashier to scan the $25 q twice (assuming it would actually take twice at the register), and also stack the OS q. Net paid would be $40 + tax. If you receive the full $49.99 rebate, it would be $10 MM + $4 back in Rewards which would cover the tax. Initially I thought the "up to" was there so that if you use the $25 q, the case that is discounted by the q would be the case that is free. However, the $25 q is in-store only while the rebate is for online orders only, so there shouldn't be any connection between the q and the rebate. Of course there are online q's, and I suppose this is where my question of "how" is asked. If you use a $20 q (just saying $20 to make the math simple) would you get $40 back in rebates (q discounts each case to $40) or $30 back (q discounts only one case to $30)? Unless anyone has previous experience or information that indicates I would get back less than a $40 rebate (i.e., I would end up OOP), I will probably try this out. |

I looked at this wiki but didn't see the answer to my question.
The only thing that looks good to me in this ad is the Kleenex, but I have a $15 in one rewards check to spend. Do you need to spend the entire rewards check in one transaction, or can I use some of it towards just the .99 kleenex? TIA! |
