Been waiting for a good deal for my first HDTV around this price... Finally decided to go for it.
Don't care about smart tv, since so many other ways to get those features.

Not a bad purchase by anymeans, but there have been 50 inch plasmas that don't have smart TV features for $500.

Yea, I was really close to a Panasonic plasma, but the reflective screens were not going to work with my room. Too many windows...

ShIzNiTs 02-09-2013 10:23 PM

I have this. Got it for same price from Frys.com a few weeks/months ago.

I like everything about it except for the sound. Depending on your set-up I would advise something extra be it a sound bar, system, or even some logitech speakers. Good value at $550.

menace33 02-09-2013 10:36 PM

Sweet price, I'd be all over it if it wasn't for space in the bedroom. I'll be looking for a deal on a 42" though.

mholla 02-10-2013 05:12 AM

I was about to pull the trigger on this the other day from Fry's until I read the reviews on avs forum. A lot of disgruntled owners on there. LG says it is Tru-Motion 120hz yet it is not really 120hz and you can not adjust the tru-motion in the settings like you can on the higher end LG models. LG said last year they were going push an update to allow you to change this settings but it has yet to come out. The set is this price every few months from Fry's, so I think I will hold out a while longer to see if any other slick deals come along.

I'm not sure what you're going on about. I own this TV and love it. I guess I'm less bent up over slick marketing terms.

I'm not knocking the TV, just want people to be aware they are not getting a true 120hz LED TV as advertised. What LG does on this model is a smoothing method that is nothing remotely close to actual 120Hz frame rate according to the test performed.

My guess is that they want to turn trumotion (frame rate interpolation) off and don't have that option yet. **nevermind, see mholla's post above.

At any rate (pun!), I think the main drawback of this tv is the disappointing quality of the 3d. However, at this price you could just consider it for its 2d (60Hz input) quality which is quite good and it's still a decent deal.

SPavs 02-10-2013 01:54 PM

How is this for console gaming?

tizzao 02-10-2013 02:00 PM

I play fighters on it and, in game mode, it's pretty good. It feels like less than 2 frames of input lag but I have never tested it.

SPavs 02-10-2013 02:23 PM

I got ya. I was probably going to play mostly sports games and shooters on here, just casual gaming so not for extended amount of hours either.

Ah yess. You made the right decision! Enjoy your tv man!

dravid 02-10-2013 04:44 PM

LG (and Samsung too) are in the top reliable HDTV brands per consumer reports.

NewHorizon 02-10-2013 07:11 PM

Got this from Frys couple of months ago for the same price, worth every penny! You would not regret even with all that native 60hz confusion etc..

l0aded 02-11-2013 01:06 PM

Is this really a good deal? I believe I bought this same model for 400 on black friday from Frys. Yes it is black friday but the price gap is substantial.

picture quality or smart functions

which would you rather give up?

VandyZ 02-14-2013 07:18 AM

I have this TV, updated the Firmware to the higher end model based on instructions found via google and now have all the menu options.

Great TV!

Great TV!

You may want to provide the model it was upgraded to and the link to help others that bought it rather than just make the comment. :)

Are LEDs supposed to have the best picture quality. I've been in the market for a while and from my personal experience, plasmas have superior picture quality than LEDs

That's pretty subjective but most put plasma above LCD (/LED) given similar quality panels.

It's mostly because of the better blacks compared to LCD/LED and don't suffer from the light leakage. But all else being equal, the panel choice more comes down to environment than picture quality. LCD/LED tend to be brighter, less heat/electricity

sdnoobster 02-15-2013 08:12 AM

in for one
seems like the latest tech for a great price.. was looking for a 120hz with free ship and no tax
comes with 4 3d glasses as well..

thanks op

dont think plasma's are above lcd or led quality.. viewing angles on plasma are terrible

Wait, what? You may have that backwards. Plasma doesn't suffer from angle-distortion at all. LCD is what can distort even when viewing just off-center (outside of IPS screens). I did forget about that, not only can the picture be much better but you don't have to worry about motion blur or viewing angles.

I wish it wasn't, I'm in the market to replace my '07 Panny plasma and I'm hoping to go LED to cut down on energy usage (I want to leave it running cycling through high-res images but won't with the plasma.).

Great TV!

I am interested in details on what firmware you upgraded to and what additional features that it gives you access to.

Thanks!

Mooper 02-28-2013 11:08 AM

How thin is this compared to the Samsung ES models (e.g., UN46ES6003)? It is listed as 1.4 inches, about the same as the Samsung. Can anyone confirm it is truly that uber-thin? Sometimes listed #s aren't accurate. Thanks.

120Hz isn't a "slick" marketing term, it's a real hardware spec. LG has been cheating for ages. Their sets are 60Hz sets that simulate 120Hz through flickering the lights. People aren't bent out of shape about a "TrueMotion" mode or anything like that, they're upset that the TV won't properly display a 24FPS film without interpolating frames because it's technically a 60Hz TV, not a 120Hz TV. Additionally, the 3D will suffer as TVs/Blu-Ray players aren't good at interpolating 3D video, which gives convergence issues.

tvon 02-28-2013 11:18 AM

FYI - the 55LS4500 55" is $649 at MicroCenter.. could probably PM at Amazon. I realize its the LS and not 3d... but similar.

You've got that backwards. Viewing angles on plasmas are basically the same as old CRT tvs. LCD/LEDs are the ones you have to concern yourself with viewing angles.

I paid about this price for the 42LM5800 a while back and I have been pretty happy with it. It is primarily used for the Wii and Blu-Ray's for our kids in the second living room. This is a good TV for the price.

I stopped reading here, as I'm pretty sure the majority of us discovered a while ago that the difference between 60 and 120 mhz is a joke. But I've done my research, feel free to do your own.

leebo 03-07-2013 10:58 AM

I've been going around in circles for the last month looking at TV's. Just couldn't bring myself to pass up on this deal. I'm sure I could find it cheaper in a few months, but I'm sure by that time I'll have spent all our tax return. :D

In for 1!!

tizzao 03-17-2013 04:28 PM

This deal is still available. I passed my first one on to a family that was looking to get a TV locally and ordered a second one. I really don't like smart TVs (because they'll just be outdated in a year) and I don't like the magic wand remotes. This TV was solid to me and the price is solid too.
