Kindof silly that it lets you apply them in the cart.

Stop talking crap.....no it hasnt . One review and its 5/5... What are your standards...6/5? Maybe 7?

And if you are too stupid to not read the specs....OMG...no dvd drive......what will we do?????

obviously the new, "thin" ultraportables don't have dvd drives.

and out of all 5 reviews on amazon 1 received a DOA unit, the other hated the OS the other one liked the hardware but gave it 2 stars for the battery....

This is a great laptop for basic web browsing/netflix/playing HD movies. It streams better than my 2nd gen i5 samsung ultraportable because of a better apu/gpu than the intel HD3000.

I bought it for 299.99 at staples.

This laptop computer is good for web surfing, but since the iPad, I've significantly reduced the need to use the laptop. As tablets further evolve to become notebook replacements, in a year, you might not even miss this.

Nevertheless, good deal if you need one right now.

Tablet PCs have replaced regular laptops years ago for certain tasks but I guess now the mainstream consumer is starting to appreciate such technology.

hoalien 02-10-2013 12:24 PM

is there a restocking fee at staples for opened box?

chipilota 02-10-2013 12:27 PM

I am in need of a replacement laptop for my DD16 who spilled milk on her Toshiba. I have a bunch of Staples GC left from previous deals. She does not do much more than facebook and a tiny bit of homework. I can get this down to $140 after GC and coupon.

I guess I will take the plunge and keep it in the box for a few days, just in case.

BestDealer83 02-10-2013 12:40 PM

Besides being thin - I think the toshiba from bestbuy's clearance site last week for $290 shipped was a better deal.

usacamaro 02-10-2013 12:43 PM

3.5 hours battery life. real world is probably 2.5-3.

pretty worthless in 2013 for a laptop.

mastashake57 02-10-2013 01:19 PM

hmmwv 02-10-2013 02:04 PM

This is probably a better deal than the outlet. The A6-4455M APU with Radeon HD 7500G graphics seems to be the ULV version of the standard A6-4400M with Radeon HD7520G graphics.

currymanpie 02-10-2013 03:24 PM

There is no comparison, the Toshiba's E1-1200 is a extremely low performance processor that's barely capable of doing Netflix HD. It should only be used in netbooks not a full size laptop.

i agree with my fellow PNWer. No comparison- you will really notice the difference in a year or two when the "netbook" processor becomes unusable.....

I played with a display model in the store. From the windows experience index the graphic numbers are no better than i3-3rd generation, but cpu numbers are way lower than i3.

There are also complaints about the screen being too dim. Looks like Lenovo hasn't fixed that and the problem is still present in the current batch. Unlike other laptops in the store, at the lowest brightness setting the screen is completely dark in Windows 8. From my experience it will be worse if downgraded to windows 7.

yea from notebook check:
"The CPU cores are based on a reworked Bulldozer architecture, called Piledriver. Although marketed as a dual-core processor, the A6-4455M includes only one module with two integer-cores and and floating-point core. As a result, the CPU is not a true dual-core processor."

I know their quad cores are not true quad cores, but did not know that also applied to their dual cores, so it's really a single core cpu. I know the GPU is pretty solid on this but that is just sad in terms of CPU.

USB Flash drives can do everything a DVD drive can, while being more portable, having more storage, and doesn't make your laptop thicker/heavier/more power consuming. They're extremely cheap nowadays.

Three laptops at this household with no built-in optical drive. We have an external drive when needed. Not for everyone but I doubt we will ever buy another laptop with built-in optical drive. Again, everyone has different requirements.

Things I like:
The form factor is great, It's very light, sturdy, the A6 seems to handle anything I throw at it, the keyboard is really nice, nice bright screen.

Thing I don't like:
Windows 8 (but classic shell seems to take care of that), battery life, no backlit keyboard.

Things I think I really won't like:
Upgrading hard drive and RAM because they are hidden under the 8 or so screw hole bottom. Only 2 DDR3 slot.

I thought it was easier for the average person to burn a bootable ISO rather than make a USB flash drive bootable and have the correct files ( for like an OS or multiboot type thing)

Nah85 02-11-2013 08:26 PM

Out of stock. Is it something that could handle photoshop?

slckofit 02-11-2013 10:59 PM

Picked one up this morning. I like it so far. The only complaint is the display. Compared to my 4 year old $300 emachine laptop, the colors aren't as nice. And the processor scored 4.9 in windows experience index compared to 5.6 on the emachine. Windows 8 is going to take some time to get use to also.

Chaminda 02-11-2013 11:02 PM

You guys think this laptop is much better than this http://slickdeals.net/f/5819888-H...R-B-M-YMMV

Looking to hear you opinions cause i now own both. Don't have the lenovo in my possession yet.

ardur 02-12-2013 03:47 PM

I'm getting OOS after I try to add the laptop to my cart. Is it OOS?!? Anyone else?

janyjan 02-12-2013 05:10 PM

I was in Staples this morning debating between the Lenovo and an HP Sleekbook 14-b010us [staples.com]. Any thoughts? I really only need to be able to surf the web, but I need to be able to load webpages quickly because it's what I do for work.

Oh, I should mention I got the Sleekbook for ~$350 - $50 rebate so final price of $300 if the rebate comes through.

kalinrs 02-12-2013 10:51 PM

Got mine today. First impressions:

Pros: The laptop has a very sleek factor, it is light, good screen, average keyboard, it is pretty fast, runs relatively cool.

Cons:
- First one didn't boot right out of the box. Got stuck on "No boot device". Box was sealed, so either they forgot to image it or the drive failed. Exchanged to be on the safe side.

- The second one (sealed too) has scratches on the battery and slightly malfunctioning battery latch. Apparently quality control is non-existent with them any more.

- No Gigabit - What in the world are they thinking??? Why wouldn't you put a gigabit LAN in this thing?

- Clickpad is ridiculous. There are no settings to disable motion over the buttons so 8/10 times you end up moving the mouse by the time you press down and click. To make things worse - Synaptics includes a "billion" other extras but omits something crucial like that.

- Windows 7 BIOS issues, which Lenovo refuses to fix according to latest news - Renders windows 7 useless on it.

- The camera has pretty bad quality so it is below useless.

Although the above issues, I will still keep it. I just love the form factor. I can't even believe myself saying all of this, but it was like love from first sight :). I guess the non-W7 issue will at least make me get used to W8. It might be a good thing after all. The thing that annoys me the most is the lack of gigabit, so I either have to get a dualband card put in it or a USB3 gigabit adapter. I use my NAS for main file distribution, so 100 sometimes just doesn't cut it.

OP is 17W ULV. Compare against 17W intel. Graphically it will win handily and the CPU is good enough for most tasks.

HP is 2nd gen i3 and a little weak comparing to 3rd gen i3...both cpu are very comparable.

Here is the review...but not based on S405..

And the processor scored 4.9 in windows experience index compared to 5.6 on the emachine. Windows 8 is going to take some time to get use to also.

I've owned S405-A6-4455M for about 2 months. I use it everyday for web surf..check email..copy&paste...I struggled in the very low score 4.9 in windows experience index but soon I recognized that the score didn't mean anything....This APU really runs fast and even faster than my old 2nd i5-2410M...I think this is due to the new OS Windows 8...

As a computer technology fan...I spent about a week and get used to Win8..I also wrote some scripts and shotcuts..put then on the desktop so operation environment is very similar to Win7...

I also found most Win7 programs are not comparable with Win8.. including the anitvirus..LOL....Now..I use Win8 more Iike I use Android/Ipad tablets..

Hmmm.... I'm in a dilemma here... I gotta buy a laptop for my younger sister b-day by next month, she's in 11th grade of high school and I am hoping the laptop I buy for her will last her for 3-4 years...

Is this a good laptop that meets that criteria?? Can it last 3-4 years? Or should I wait??

Should I consider the HP Sleekbook that has 2nd gen i3 for around same price? http://www.staples.com/HP-Pavilio...uct_985049

My budget is roughly around 300ish dollars (with taxes, coupon, etc etc).... which seems better, this laptop or that HP? (But the HP laptop, I gotta go with the rebates and etc...)

2nd gen i3 vs A6-4455M... hmm....

Lenovo S405 is a solid built laptop..I've been used IBM to Lenovo...the Lenovo built quality is not as good as IBM ThinkPad..but better than other brands. I also bought S405-A6-4455M for my 12 years old niece for her school work...S405 is very easy to connect to wireless with no complaints....I love S405 wireless card that is much better, smart and compatible with my old router...and fast..It is a cheap and handy laptop 14" w/ 4 lbs..only for $275 even cheaper than I got last Dec (was $299.99)...think about this....too cheap to be true so you don't want to expect it can run as fast as now after 3-4 years...so...just pay another $275 after 2-3 years for i5 or A8/A10..that means you lower the risk of failures of machine and every 2-3 yrs you get a NEW one...good strategy right!!

Thanks for your feedback! I like the way you think with buying 275 dollar NEW laptop every 2-3 years lowering the risk of failures and all lol.

Obviously whichever I choose will be an upgrade from her real real old laptop (except this don't have a CD/DVD drive...) and it will be another upgrade in 2-3 years and etc.

I bought one for now for 294 (can you believe taxes are almost 20 dollars? eshhh) and am holding it in sealed box for now until I wait and see if there's going to be any amazing deals this upcoming President's Day weekend. If there is, I'll buy that and return this laptop (as I got 14 days), if not, she'll get this laptop...

I just hope I'm making the right decision of buying this laptop and she'll be happy with it, being that it's an A6 and not some Intel i3s or something...

I took out the CD/DVD drive from old laptop and bought an enclosure case from Amazon (~$6)..if needed, plug it into USB port..as a DVD drive..just make sure the port of CD/DVD drive is IDE or SATA before buying the enclosure.

Thanks for the review. The short battery life kills it for me. I like the idea of thin and light but battery free operation is also part of that.

There are also screws under the rubber feet.

Be awarded of voiding the warranty after you unscrewed it...there is a secured label on top of screw.

Got this laptop for my wife yesterday. She liked the laptop but hated Win8. So I installed BasicShell on it to give her that Win7 feel. I also spent 30 minutes showing her how to use Win8. She is happy now. Loves the BasicShell. Next up, I will install that program that will allow me to run all the Android apps on it. We have Android tablets, so she is excited about being able to do that.

I would not get this laptop for myself, but my wife, who mostly surfs the net, writes letters and few documents and plays some low level games, seems to be ok with it so far. Maybe too soon to call it, but I think I made a good purchase.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant to write "Classic Shell". You can find more information here:

http://www.classicshell.net/

It basically brings back the start button on the lower left corner with functionality that you see in Win7 or other windows versions.

As for the Adroid apps in Windows 8, you can use BlueStacks. You can get more information here:

http://www.bluestacks.com/getyour...index.html

Hope this clears up your questions. If not, let me know.

Thanks for this. I really hate Windows 8. I want to downgrade to Windows 7, but Lenovo isn't planning on fixing the brightness problem so I'm stuck.

Thats what Im doing expect not with this laptop - but with a Toshiba A6 laptop that I got from bestbuy's website for $271.99{$290} after taxes. I chose the Toshiba instead of this one because it has an HD webcam and a dvd drive. Im going to keep it sealed in the box though - if I see anything better for around the same price in the next week or two - I'll return this one and get the better one.

No need to downgrade to Windows 7 once you have Classic Shell installed.

Ahh nice. Do you have link for the Toshiba A6 laptop?

Also I noticed on Staples (after witnessing someone doing this first hand in front of me on the counter) that they have an unique 14 day policy of returns with laptops where you can pretty much open, use however you want and if you have any problems or reason to return it, you can return with FULL MONEY back and no restocking fee....

So I just gave the laptop b-day present early to my sister (yesterday on Valentines Day) and told her that she got 10 days to figure out if you want this or not, so I can return this laptop to staples with full refund (and buy other laptop) without any problems.

I tried finding the link for it but it seems like bestbuy.com and clearance.bestbuy.com removed the laptop. It was a 15.6 inch toshiba with 4gb of ram and 500gb hard-drive windows 8 usb 3.0 hd webcam dvd with an A6-4400 processor which is basically the same as this lenovo according to a member here - in his words - the A6-4455 is basically the ultra low voltage version of the 4400 - as well as the integrated graphics - both are the same.

Unless you're going to leave 30-50 tabs open in firefox AND chrome, I'd say 4gb is fine for your use. SSD is always a good choice compared to a platter hard drive, but the cost of them has been going up so much it's ridiculous. It seems as large spinning hard drives have gone down, ssds have gone up.

/edit/ Also I don't understand why this is in deal talk? More than a few local stores still have this in stock for me... I played with one in the store and it seemed to work pretty well- I didn't see any "weirdness" with the trackpad.

/edit2/ Oh, the coupon expired on 2/14... My bad!

NemesisEnforcer 02-16-2013 06:19 AM

The 15.6 inch toshiba sounds like a better deal since A6-4400 is better than this 4455....

But it sucks that the link is no longer there, meaning Best Buys don't have this anymore...

Well, you could buy an external CD/DVD drive from newegg from around 25-30 dollars which only needs USB connection as it's powered like portable HDDs....

After using this laptop for about a month, I have to say this is among the best deals I ever got in tech. I bought this just to try Windows 8 but ended up loving the machine. 14" screen is a perfect compromise between portability and screen size, 275 bucks + tax with free shipping for a well built lenovo with decent specs is great. The only better deal I think was a Nexus 7 I got on sale.
