From post #213 of nikets01 Computer tech here: 1. Read my post on page 3 for hardware infos, windows 7 downgrade, and wireless antenna replacement on page 4 2. Battery problem? Read my post on page 8 3. Windows 8 is a pain in the ass to use. Turning off User Account Control won't let you open programs as administrator like in Windows 7. Clean boot win 7 is the best option, no bloatware, and look how fast it runs now. Boot test video [youtube.com] PM me if you need newest drivers for Windows 7 |

LINK [microcenter.com] They have an open-box one at Tustin, CA for $548.96. 17.3 Inch Screen, i7-3610QM, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HD, Bluetooth, Windows 7 They also have a Samsung for $599.99. LINK [microcenter.com] Basically the same specs as this, but 750 GB HD and Bluetooth. Maybe if you gave the manager crap, you could get them to knock off $75. |

Can I install MacOS on this?
It's been a while I haven't tried to install MacOS on Windows PC. |

The price of those upgrades just don't justify it. Not that the L855-S5378 you posted isn't a decent deal in it's own right... but if you can find this one on clearance somewhere, you could easily exceed those specs for $125. 1 TB 2.5 Inch HDs have been as low as $64. 16 GB of DDR3 Memory has been as low as $50. Bluetooth, you could add a dongle for $1 (Meritline). |
Got this yesterday for $499 less 10% (open-box like new) plus $75 coupon, total $375. Very nice laptop if available.
|
Is this a good price for the laptop?
|
the CPU itself retails for $350. I dont know how they earn profit.

The inventory checker link is down for me...

These laptop i7's don't cost that much and don't compare in performance. They are 2.4GHz (3.4 w/ boost). |

$378 this is a mid range IB i7, good price FYI, this cpu does not support VT-d [wikipedia.org] IC seems hosed |
I bought this laptop last week without any $ off coupon. I will try to do a return/rebuy (am wondering they will let me do it!)
This clearance model is nearly the same as the new one ($649.99). If you could get this clearance model with $75 off, it will be a very good deal for a i7 laptop. |
The benchmarks for the cpu don't seem all that great, but if you can get it for ~450 I think it's a pretty good deal. At least better than some of the leveno i3's that have been selling for ~380.

$378 is the tray price. If you don't know what a tray price is, stay quiet
Some basic math: $250 for the i7 $50 for the HDD $25 ram $50 for the lcd pannel $50 for windows licence (guessed prices what OEM payed) and we are already at the sale price. not to mention, case, battery, motherboard, optical drive, power supply, touchpad, keyboard, packaging, labor, transportation. Toshiba looses, we win. |
Is it my imagination or is the touch pad way off to the left side? Is that normal?

3.4 GHz with Turbo Boost is the max speed. There, are you happy? You act like I'm intentionally misleading people and have a vested interest in selling this computer. No shit its going to have a low-end clock speed that ramps up depending on what tasks you're doing... if it was running at 3.4 GHz all the time the battery would be drained in no time. Obviously a mobile processor isn't going to come close to yielding the benchmarks and performance of a desktop, unless you're comparing an i7 Extreme Edition Mobile CPU, in which case, you basically have a laptop with no battery life that's a desktop replacement. So talking about desktop clock speeds in relation to a mobile processor is nonsense. Whether or not the processor costs $378, its still a pretty good deal at $450 when you factor in all the component costs. Processor: $260 to $280 HD: $50 Memory: $25 to $30 DVD Drive: $25 You're already at about $360 to $400 in parts and that's not even factoring in the cost of the MOBO, Speakers, Display, Wireless, Operating System License, etc. |

just picked 1 up. Dissambling . Will update inside components. Replacing the HDD with a 256 GB Vertex 3, 8GB Samsung 30nm DDR3 and Intel Centrino Ultimate 6300. BTW the sd.site88.net is very accurate. Show "low stock clearance" at my store, went to pick up and pay, check back with that site when i'm out to the parking lot and it already show OOS
EDIT: Inside has a Toshiba 640GB 5400rmp drive, 4GB Kingston 1600MHz cas 11 stick + 2GB Samsung 1600 MHz cas 11 stick, Wireless device is RTL8188CE. EDIT2 : No backlit keyboard, 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0, Gigabit LAN. And yes I was able to switch the wireless adapter and it works flawlessly in dual band. For those of you want to downgrade to Windows 7 clean boot with a USB stick, you have to disable "Secure Boot" in BIOS (Press F2 to access BIOS) and change "UEFI mode" to "CSM mode(above this it should change to AHCI)" to be able to see the USB |
hey, clock speed is missing from the title. i think it's 3.4(TB)?

Thanks. Grabbed this for $476 including tax.
I saw they had an i5 for $50 less due to mail in rebate. L855 S5370. Basically the same I believe, except for 750 HD and i5. Don't know if anyone would be interested in that, if they can't locate this one. |

Debating on this (and several others) as I am in need of a new laptop. Looking at the i7 Toshiba w/ 8 GB RAM for $650 this week at Staples (plus the $75 off coupon) or the $750 Samsung (plus coupon) as well.
Need one soon, as my i3 4 GB RAM is really starting to glitch out on me after close to 4 years. |
Quote:
Unless either the more expensive Toshiba have a dedicated video card or the Samsung, I dont see why you are debating. You could easily save $100+ going with this clearance. Oh yeah, this 3rd gen i7 will eat your 1st gen i3 for breakfast. :) |

I'm looking for a 13.3 inch screen notebook (not ultrabook, I want a optical drive). Seems like my only current choices are Sony S series or a Mac. Asus and other manufacturers have 13.3 notebooks but they're outdated. Any suggestions? The Sony S Series mousepad is ridiculously big which interferes with typing (plus their keyboard isn't sensitive enough). And I'm not sure if I want to jump to a Mac.

just grabbed one, the battery does not hold charge.

I was able to buy one at the fourth store I visited. The lady in front of me at the third store bought the last two they had. I walked by her in the parking lot when she was loading her car and she must have had 7-8 of these in her back seat. This will be a great upgrade from my 6-year old Dell XPS M140. Thanks OP.
|
Bought one earlier today for $466 tax included, but just now bought a Lenovo i7 with GT650M video card for $588 from Lenovo outlet, thinking about returning the Staples one. The Lenovo already has Intel Centrino wireless so I no longer have to replace the wireless card.
Keep in mind folks, I was on Lenovo the whole morning refreshing to get that deal, so it is not that easy. |

I can get Staples GCs at 20% off face, so I paid $400 for a $500 gift card and got this and had a ~$20 remaining balance. Picked up a case of paper with the remaining balance plus $6 (that will yield a $20 GC). So for $400 + $6, I got the laptop, a case of paper and a $20 gift card.

Follow these step: 1. Shut down (not sleep, hibernate or restart) your computer with the battery installed and plugged in power adapter. 2. Remove the power adapter then remove the battery. 3. Plug back the adapter in and power on without the battery. 4. When it's on, shut down (not sleep, hibernate or restart) the computer while plugged in. 5. While plugged in and the computer is shut, install the battery, then power on. 6. Let it charge for about 1-2 hours, then you should see the battery charge % goes up. 7. If it is still at 0% after all these steps, you qualify for a battery replacement. |

I seriously doubt someone is going to snap some "real life" pictures for you, unless you're bribing them. :lmao: If you want to get a feel for the laptop, step into any MicroCenter, Office Depot or Best Buy and I'm sure they'll have at least one Satellite L855 model on display. They all pretty much have the same styling. I don't really think you can go wrong at $450 for the specs this system has. Unless the i5 Thinkpad has dedicated graphics, it's really a no brainer. Even budget i7 laptops rarely go below $500. Comparable models are usually about $600 to $650 on sale. |

How many are you ending up keeping? The X230T looks like its got a pretty high MSRP, so if you got it for $525, that seems like a pretty good deal relative to that. But, it only has a 12.5 inch screen? PCMag gives the X230T pretty favorable reviews.... but I would have a hard time spending that much for such a small screen. If it was me, I'd stick with the Toshiba w/ the i7, maybe upgrade the RAM and HD, and a budget i5 in the $300 range just for basic usage. But, of course, everyone's needs are different. |
Quote:
The big factor is build quality as well, Thinkpads are built tough and last a long time imo. IDK about this one, but the i7 is what is pushing me towards it at this price. My E530 is coming in tomorrow, or well I have to go pick it up, so we will see how it is. |
Quote:
As far as this Toshiba goes, you either love it or hate it and think its cheap and plastic-y. It's got a textured design which doesn't appeal to everyone. But, I have family members who have Toshiba laptops that have lasted 4 or 5 years... so if you take care of your system I'm sure it can last. The first thing I always look at is the specs and price, and then I start to worry about the intangibles. For $450, it's pretty hard to go wrong given what it has. |

I like having the security of the extra warranty, but it really is a personal preference. Since this is clearance they can sell the display. I sent the wife over thinking they only had the display but they handed her a sealed box! Sweet deal! Repped
|
I purchased one of these about two weeks ago when it was listed in the sales ad. When i went to the staples store they didnt have any on display, or even a display spot for them, so i asked the salesperson and they had 9 of them in the back..that was in Greenville SC. Orderd a samsung SSD for it already. Ordered a mini bluetooth dongle for $15 from amazon that works well with windows 8. A keyboard cover too that hasnt come yet and a bluetooth mouse. Im wanting to upgrade the RAM from the 6gb to either 8gb or 16gb but the factory memory is 1.35v and most of what im seeing out there is 1.5v....the 1.35 chips seem to bring a premium. any issue with running 1.5v RAM in this machine? Overall im very pleased. I see people commenting on the weight. Its no ultrabook..but it in my opinon it is very thin and light. From looking at benchmarks, this 3630qm I7 processor looks to trump a good deal of the other I7 laptop processors I was looking at before I bought this laptop. I was worried about the integrated intel HD4000 graphics and 720p screen as well. I dont play any games so that was not a concern for me. From what I read thought the HD4000 graphics is better than a good number of the entry level graphics cards that come in some of the entry-mid level laptops. I am a hobby photographer and out of photoshop images are very crisp and sharp. I would love to know more about the wifi upgrade some people were talking about earlier in the thread and welcome any input on what type of RAM i should consider for this machine
|

In my store, I was told that they cannot sell the display even though it is in clearance. The laptop has to go out of their system for them to sell the display model. I don't know if it is true or not but that was what I was told! |

And thank you OP for posting this (TUd and Rep'd). Picked one up this morning in Greenfield MA. One more left there. Charging it up now, hope no battery issues. Declined the $115 two-year basic (no accidental coverage) warranty, but mighty tempting. Still have time to change mind. Thanks to all the SDers who've been posting in this thread - I've been getting so bogged down in researching laptops for last few weeks, this thread made for a relatively easy decision. Now I just need to learn how to use Windows 8. There must be some free video tutorials online. |

Mine started to charge after being plugged in for 4 hours. I think that battery was just so dead that it had a hard time getting to the point to start safely charging. I'd read about others cleaning the terminals or resetting but I think it all just came down to time. Toshiba gives you the option to get a replacement which I'll do if the battery life isn't up to spec. |
I ended up getting this, plus the $275 desktop in another deal. My desktop has been dead for awhile, and I've wanted to build a HTPC--this is good enough for that purpose. Laptop started a slow death months ago--6 years old, it was time to replace it. Thanks OP!

So far my battery seems to be charging up properly. Very happy I declined Staples' extended warranty offer, as I may get one from SquareTrade. Apparently they will be posting an attractive coupon offer tomorrow on their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SquareTrade), but it seems you have to 'like' them and give over your email address in order to access their page, which I did.
They seem to be less expensive than Staples, and it appears that accidental coverage is included by default. Don't know all the details yet, but definitely am considering. Will see what they post tomorrow. |

You can buy additional warranty through Visa at a better price, so after two years you can buy two or three more years. |
Had to do take battery out, start it, shut down, put battery back in, to get it to start charging, took a few attempts. To make the function keys work like normal, you can change the setting in system settings - keyboard - function keys mode, and put back into standard mode. Took a while to remove the bloatware. No issues with touchpad. The 2 small hinges for the monitor are a bit of a worry, hope they hold up over time. Would have been nice if the earphone jack was a bit further back on the side, it's located right on the side by the corner.
With the stock ram and hard drive here are the windows experience scores: processor 7.8, memory 7.8, graphics 5.9, gaming graphics 6.5, hard drive 5.9, overall score 5.9. Definitely worth the price. |
