Wifi only but ok deal if you don't need 3G; there are 6s with AC adapter and USB, probably boxes too since I see the owners manual included.

lotusmonk 02-11-2013 01:44 AM

Edited to include the 3G model deal of the day for $70

armygreen 02-11-2013 04:43 AM

OP, I'm a little confused about the "Free 3G wireless connectivity" for the $70 model. I know about connecting via WiFi, but have never used 3G. Does it matter if the provider is ATT using CDMA service, or T-Mobile using GSM service. I assume that the Kindle is assigned a unique calling number that can only connect with an Amazon server. How does the service provider get paid--do they bill Amazon? Thanks.

Yes you do not have to hook it up to your own provider you just turn it on and it works.

irishsoccermbw 02-11-2013 05:08 AM

Great deal, this is the Kindle I've been using for 1+ years and I love it. 35 is a steal.

pinmagic 02-11-2013 05:11 AM

But I believe the 3G is only to download books - I don't think you can do much else with it.

Actually the 3 has a built in web browser too, so it is good in a pinch when traveling internationally.

buy a toy and sit there without any content unless pay another additional extra, that is why people love Apple.

I don't know what this means. It's words masquerading as English but not doing a very good job. ;)

You do not have to buy books to read on a Kindle. There are over "42,000 free ebooks" available at Project Gutenberg [gutenberg.org] that can go on the Kindle. Most of the public libraries in the U.S. provide access to ebooks that you can check out and read on your Kindle. If you have Amazon Prime (yes, it costs money) you can check out a book from their library once per month. You are also able to purchase books for the Kindle too if you want to do so.

They use AT&T in the USA and various other GSM providers in other countries. The provider bills Amazon.

The 3G keyboard version includes basic email and browser functionality.

Grabbed one. My wife and I can finally stop arguing over the one I bought her for Mothers Day!

zephear 02-11-2013 06:41 AM

Wow...Looks like the 3G model is new...not pre-owned. Pretty good deal. I wonder which is a better deal, this or the Kindle 2 3G pre-owned for $29.99 on eBay last week. Not a kindle expert but the difference between the two that I can see (besides condition) is 4GB capacity vs. 2GB.

slomer 02-11-2013 06:41 AM

I doubt I will ever buy another eink device that isn't touch screen but for those who do not care this is a really good price. TU

mitchflorida 02-11-2013 06:42 AM

This version also allows you to play Audible audiobooks on it .. And will also read books aloud. Very highly recommended.

Their "experimental" 3G web browser is basically useless. Very hard to navigate it except to get onto the Amazon website to get more content.

Yes, the browser sucks and won't load most full websites - *but* it loads mobile versions of most websites just fine, including Gmail and Yahoo Mail. Combined with free international 3G for life on the 3G model and it's a great thing to have when traveling abroad to be able to check email and news from the beach.

agreed that browser is junk... but i love the reader.

In for a grade 5 one

kalrith 02-11-2013 07:02 AM

I'm pretty sure that the 3G is limited to downloading books and using Wikipedia. If it works with more than that, then I don't think it's supposed to.

kim1982 02-11-2013 07:04 AM

What is the difference between the $35 and the $70 reader?

unreal25 02-11-2013 07:06 AM

FYI for the $35 version: Product Grade 4 - Significant scratches or scuffs

Also if you don't really care about 3G you can buy a new, latest Kindle from amazon for $75.

Agreed. I have one, the browser is terrible (it's even described as "experimental" on the UI). The keyboard is useless, we never touch it. That real estate would have been better served had it been dedicated to reading. But for $35 as a pure reader, nice deal. I'd buy another at this price.

That's only with the NEWER Kindles. This is the Kindle Keyboard, the last version to allow full internet access over 3G, even when outside the US. I've personally accessed Gmail, Yahoo Mail, BBC News, Slickdeals and more in both Australia, Indonesia and Thailand in the past 3 months on my Kindle Keyboard (the $70 model listed in this thread).

The keyboard is useless? I am always using it for the search function .. to search the book for terms or even looking up vocabulary.

Audible.com also lets you download a free morning digest of the Wall Street Journal or New York Times, and you can listen to that while driving.

Yes.

I have a gen2 and my wife has a gen3 Kindle. I own the nice M-Edge leather case with their LED book light that fits into it. She has tried several various "book lights" with her Kindle as well. While the booklights work okay, they're still not ideal.

You have to buy the booklight itself. You have buy/replace/recharge batteries. If the light is not built into the case, you have to keep track of the booklight in addition to the Kindle. External booklights add weight and thickness to the cases if they're built-in which, to some extent, negates the perk of the Kindle being lighter than paper books. Keeping a separate booklight attached to the Kindle without a case is a pain. The lighting from an external booklight is uneven and directional. Etc., etc.

For the past several years that I have owned my 2nd gen Kindle, I've said repeatedly that it would be perfect if only they could light the screen without adding glare. When Amazon announced the Paperwhite, I pre-ordered it as soon as possible. It's worth every penny to me.

The lighting is very adjustable and fairly uniform. There is no glare. It makes the pages readable without lighting up the room. The battery life on the Paperwhite is excellent even with the backlight on. It is wonderful for early morning or late night reading on airplanes. It is a godsend if you like to read in bed after your significant other has gone to sleep and complains about the nightstand lamp being on. It's great for camping, too.

Also, before I used the Paperwhite, I didn't think I would care one way or the other about the touchscreen. After using it for a while, I definitely prefer it to hard buttons.

I do have two very minor critiques of the Paperwhite. The first is that the bezel is almost too small. You have to be careful or you end up accidentally turning the page when you brush against the edge of the screen due to the small bezel. The second is that the touchscreen is almost too sensitive. I would have preferred that it require slightly firmer contact to register a "touch". These are minor complaints to me though.

I think it is completely worth the extra $$ for the Paperwhite if you tend read at night or in poorly lit areas on a semi-frequent basis.

false, i used it in japan several times to check my email and facebook. It was completely free of charge.

Yes, free wi-fi is everywhere in US, but if you are traveling internationally, finding free wi-fi may be hard.

We went to Japan last summer thinking we could find free wi-fi easily. Boy, we were WRONG! Free wi-fi at Mcdonald's IF you have Softbank phone service. Same at Starbucks, too. We kept looking for unsecured line while walking around.:lmao: I was super shocked since I am used to get totally free wi-fi in US.

unfortunately, they've restricted global 3G usage to 50MB/month (most likely you won't use that much for just plain text browsing/email)

believe that within USA, no limit

I second this! I bought the Kindle regular and immediately returned it to get a paperwhite. it is definitely worth the upgrade. This is the first generation paperwhite and there are some inconsistencies in the backlight uniformity and am sure in the second iteration they will fix it.

Anyone thinking of getting a kindle, go with the paperwhite!

Best Buy Facebook has a poll every day for 25 Best Buy Reward points. You can link 2 Facebook accounts to one Best Buy Reward number, so 50 points per day. They put a new poll up around 11pm EST, but the "new day" starts at 1am EST for Best Buy. You can vote twice per day to get the points, and if you vote more than twice, you won't get points after 2nd polls. I try to vote a little after 1am every night for 50 points.

250 points = $5 Best Buy reward certificate
The reward certificates I have gotten from this promo (recently) have expiration dates of May, 2013.

However, we are not sure when the 25 points poll promo ends.

Normally 3G/4G tablets require a paid subscription to a provider. Kindle Keyboard 3G is an eReader not a tablet.

I have gotten $15 or $20 worth of reward certificates from Facebook polls only, so *maybe* you would get enough to buy the paperwhite. (And I recently started linking 2 Facebook accounts to Best Buy reward number.)

You can purchase something with your reward certificate and then return it. Easiest way would probably be to order it for store pickup and not pick it up.

whoa :) people actually liked it? I'm glad. My first popular post :' )
Seems to be dying though, as of now, there are 2x grade 4 and 1x grade 5 pieces left.

The 3G model for $70 seems to still be in stock, but it is true that a new Kindle [amazon.com] straight from Amazon might be more valuable some. If the free 3G internet works on the old ones, that might be a major advantage of that model.

You can purchase something with your reward certificate and then return it. Easiest way would probably be to order it for store pickup and not pick it up.

What will happen the reward certificate if I order online and not picking up? Also, will I get reward certificate back when I return something that I bought with the certificate?

Seems to be dying though, as of now, there are 2x grade 4 and 1x grade 5 pieces left.

The 3G model for $70 seems to still be in stock, but it is true that a new Kindle [amazon.com] straight from Amazon might be more valuable some. If the free 3G internet works on the old ones, that might be a major advantage of that model.

I forgot to rep you, so I just did. Seems like good deal.

Your order will be canceled and you will receive a full refund. Any reward certificate used will be credited back to your account in the form of reward points.

I see. Cool! I will do that next time. I don't know why but I just didn't want to go to Best Buy although it's right next to a mall I go often.

I suspect the longevity on the Kindle keyboard's is far greater than the devices they produced afterwards. I still have mine and it's been going strong for a few years.

Received mine today - Pleasant surprise, it's a 3g model
