This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

Bundle deal is dead, now priced at $106. Lens alone is still available at $99 for both colors.

For those who ordered the $101 bundle the cleaning kit is backordered but the rest of the items should have already shipped or will ship tomorrow.

A great review of this lens' previous version can be found at PhotographyBLOG [photographyblog.com]. This R version should have very similar performance compare to it.

Also a review of this exact same lens can be found at Photozone [photozone.de].

Nice price drop on this

Makes me kind of wish I had the camera for this lens.

Edit: Available in silver also - Link [adorama.com]

Steeldeals 02-12-2013 05:50 AM

This lens is available directly from Olympus [getolympus.com] for the same price (through 2/16).

shnitz 02-12-2013 06:40 AM

Good lens. And before the "no image stabilization" claims, I use this on my Panasonic G2 without issue, and don't miss the image stabilization. Other aspects of the lens, including image quality, size, price, and weight, were much more important to me to consider than such an artificial "necessity" as image stabilization.

chuckd 02-12-2013 07:27 AM

Cool story. All "claims" about the lack of IS are officially without merit.

lzboy 02-12-2013 07:33 AM

I have this lens and it's extremely light and compact.

I'm a really, REALLY amateur photographer....but I thoroughly enjoy it. I have an Olympus E-510 which uses 4/3rds. Can someone tell me if Micro 4/3rds fits onto standard 4/3rds cameras? I honestly can't find the answer to it, which leads me to believe that it does.

Thanks for the help. I apologize for an elementary question.

I know regular 4/3 does not fit the micro without an adapter. Not sure if there is an adapter to go from micro to regular but would never use one anyway. Found out the hard way when I bought a regular 4/3 and discovered that they are different mounts. Now need to sell off the wrong one I bought.

You can buy a 4/3 screw mount to micro 4/3 adapter on Ebay for $10.

For 2$ more you get a lens cap tether, UV filter, and cleaning kit.

Sutitan 02-12-2013 09:25 AM

Well, at the last step of checkout, i saw "Please note: Although this item is temporarily out of stock, you can order it no... "

This is for the Silver lense with the 2$ kit. Doesnt mention stock anywhere on the main product page. Oh well, guess im waiting...

HalfBreed 02-12-2013 10:40 AM

Thanks, bought one from Adorama! Glad to have a zoom to go with my 25mm panny leica. One day I'll figure out what I'm doing.

junoj 02-12-2013 01:19 PM

also on amazon for $99 [amazon.com]

I personalty prefer the one that cam with the e-500 kit 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko Lenses, better f/ stop.

4/3rds will fit micro 4/3rds, but micro 4/3rds will not fit 4/3rds. To make the 4/3 fit the micro 4/3 you basically have to put in a spacer for the right spacing. To make a micro 4/3 fit a 4/3 you would have to make the lens fit farther into the camera body...which isn't really feasible.

Also, there's a better (faster) 4/3 lens from olympus out there that's 40-150 with f/3.5-4.5 instead of f/4-5.6. They can be had pretty regular off ebay for about a hundred bucks.

wendal 02-12-2013 02:37 PM

Tax in NJ. Adorama through Amazon also charges tax but adds $8 shipping as well. Checkout through Adorama directly for FSSS plus 1% CB from Mr.R (the lens doesn't fall into any of the "tiers" or approved items for higher CB percentages from the other CB sites).

jini12 02-13-2013 01:23 PM

reicaden 02-13-2013 01:49 PM

picked it up. Was frustrated by the short distance on my lenses... 45mm is too long for indoors and too short for wildlife... this should fit that spot nicely (its usually sunny for wildlife)

But then you have to pay $160 for the 4/3 to micro 4/3 adapter.

How does this compare to the Panasonic 14-140mm for shooting video?

EricZZZ 02-13-2013 02:54 PM

I bought this in the spring of 2012 and it was like $30 or more expensive.

Overall I am satisfied with the small and inexpensive tele-lens, very handy for outdoor shooting when there is enough sunlight. I took many great pictures in the Disney Orlando last summer.

Don't have either one to compare but just by looking, looks like the Panny has OIS built, starts at 14mm instead of 45, and lastly, it costs 6x as much (or 4.5x if you buy it used). Shooting from distance, I would go for the more similar (in priced and specs) 45-200mm Panny which can be had for less than $200 and has built in OIS.

I noticed you mention it was a different lens. Do you know what the difference between the "r" and non "r" versions are?

The difference is that one is Zuiko (Four Thirds) and ours here is M.Zuiko which is Micro Four Thirds.

As mentioned, you have to look at multiple different things:

-Zuiko lenses are for the old, dead 4/3 SLR system, while M.Zuiko lenses are for the micro 4/3 cameras

-The difference between the m.zuiko 40-150mm and m.zuiko 40-150mm R is pretty much nothing, just looks. They made the new R lenses because the initial midrange lenses for the micro 4/3 system were crappy and unsuitable for video. So, the 14-42mm that comes with most cameras was redesigned and given the R designation. However, the 40-150mm was designed well enough from the outset that it already performed to R standards, so it was given a different look, and they renamed it without changing anything mechanically.

I smiled when I read this because I too am so itchy... Curse you Slickdeals! Look, just nobody tell the wife. Oh, she is just going to see the bank statement anyway. I bet I will get some great sunset pics from the sliding door of my new home (a van parked down by the river).

In truth, this is a perfect match for my new GF5 which I also bought because of Slickdeals. I love the camera and so I guess I can't curse my beloved Slickdeals so much for my deal hoarding.

Keep in mind that it has no in-lens stabilization and your GF3 has no IBIS

Could someone please expand on this...I am concerned about lack of image stabilization while shooting video using a Panasonic micro 4/3 camera. I am a camera novice, so any help is appreciated. There is a similar Panasonic lens with image stabilization that is currently running around $250, but has been as low as $180. Is it worth the extra price to go with the Panny lens? Thanks in advance for the advice.

It's video...everything's moving around anyways. I can't see (no pun intended) IS making much difference. There's no "blur" to worry about.

For stills, you'd notice a difference.

Thanks for the advice, I wasn't sure if IS would reduce small movements of the camera when you're moving the camera around taking video (If you're taking a video and just trying to hold the camera still in one place for a shot, there's no way to keep the camera perfectly still with just your hand). If the IS doesn't help with that while taking video, then I may as well get this lens. I'm not as concerned about still shots.

Since it's a zoom lens, especially a kit with f/5.6 the shutter speed drop extremely quick. You might have to use iso800 to maintain 1/150s shots as a safe shutter speed @ 150mm in cloudy weather. No one cares about shutter speed in IS in bright sunlight, I wonder how E-M5 users would miss their 5stop image stabilize when using this lens on a GH2.

When you see someone just generalize - this is a great lens, IS don't matter, without specify under what types of circumstances you know they have no idea what they are talking about.

Yeah, stabilization makes a huge difference in video. Much moreso than with stills.

For video, unless you're using some kind of physical stabilization platform (tripod, steadicam or the like), IS is a godsend. Nobody's hands are perfectly steady, and while IS won't negate your shaky hands completely it will smooth out a lot of the worst jitters, and make your video look a heck of a lot better.

That wouldn't stop me from buying this lens for a Panasonic body, though. It's really small and this price is just too good to pass up. I don't think the IS is worth paying twice as much for a Panny equivalent.

sekulic 02-15-2013 09:49 AM

Sweet deal, had to jump on this. Ordered it from Olympus directly. We have an E-M5 and mainly use the 12-50 kit so this should be a great secondary lens for outdoor shoots. Thanks!

You're admitting that you'd need to bump ISO up to 800 on a cloudy day (I personally find noise to be a good compromise against blurry images so that's an OK trade-off), and also assumed that you'll only use this lens outdoors on a sunny day. In reality, IS would be helpful and would have eliminated the need for high ISO and perhaps even use this lens indoors.

IS would have been less useful in a wider lens, something like the 28mm or 35mm, and therefore Canon is pretty ridiculous to charge hundreds to throw IS and USM on the latest 24mm/28mm/35mm lenses.

But hey, it's a bargain at $100. I wouldn't say IS is useless but I'd agree that you can't wish for much from a $100 lens.

Still backordered and they have it on sale again albeit not $99 its at $150 now. Hopefully I get it someday!

I'm also still waiting. Going to send them another customer service email. It should be in stock for us by now... I don't mind waiting though.

EDIT: I'm actually going to wait 1 more week. I just reread the email they send me in February and it is the following:

"Thank you for your inquiry on the status of your backorder. According to the manufacturer estimates we expect to fulfill your order for xxx by 2nd week of March, 2013."

I'll give it until Thursday before they close down for the observed Jewish holidays for the weekend.

Anybody still back ordered? I've received several "still backordered" emails and I'm wondering if it will ever come. :(

Hopefully my delivery was indicative oif a wave of shipments. :) I never got a shipping notice from them. Nor for that matter a reply to my inquiry on status that I sent weeks ago... Good luck!
