Sorry man. I was in a bit of a hurry trying to get it posted. I correctedthem.

Dang, squeeze it all into 13" or less and I'll take it :) Good price though for a desktop replacement in small space IMO. Can even do some gaming?

Can probably do some light gaming... it might struggle at 1080p.

blau08 02-12-2013 10:05 AM

comparing to another laptop, is it worth the extra $230 for a upgrade from 1600x900 to 1080p and 4gb ram to 6gb ram?

I would pay extra to get 1080p. I wish more laptop manufacturers had the option. OR, 1080p should become the standard. How much does it really cost them to buy the better part? bleh, the 7550M really blows, i hope none of you want to play games as it can barely handle low settings. I dont get the point of tier 3 and below dedicated gpu's, they are no good for gaming and i dont think offer much above the integrated gpu for video playback. Maybe it makes it a little smoother.

Think about battery, not performance. You dont want to wired laptop, do you?

I noticed a problem with the S-Series which I suspect will also apply to this notebook. The mousepad below the keyboard is HUGE. When typing, you'll naturally rest your palms on the upper corners of the mousepad which can cause you to active and move the mouse while typing. It's kind of annoying to have the mouse jump on suddenly while typing a sentence. You can sort of move your hands around the pad or turn off the mousepad to fix this problem, but this is a poor design decision by Sony.

Using the Vaio S15 I can't say I've had this problem as much.
Perhaps I just have odd hand positioning, but my arms are approaching the keyboard from outer angles and the palm of my thumb ultimately doesn't touch the keypad.

Its the same problem with my HP laptop too. I think it may be on any huge laptop with the number pad build in so the mouse pad is move further to the left and you tend to naturally rest your palm on it.

There is a setting within the OS that you can enable to disable accidental touchpad use while typing.

Disappointing that the GPU is on par with the Intel 4000.

Yeah I'm using my 2 y/o VAIO to type this. But I was ready to see how far it would fly from my second story window when I got it. The default touchpad setting is unusable. Speaks very poorly of Sony's designers if they are still shipped that way.

PeteyTheStriker 02-12-2013 02:23 PM

This is a great laptop for this price, with these types of specs you can use this for 3-4 years without a problem. also if you really want to get the best of this type of system adding your own SSD would future proof it for a lot longer. The GFX card while not as strong as a high end gaming PC, it will still play most newer games on medium settings at 30FPS which means very playable. This will have no problem whatsoever playing older games. Also people who video edit/photo shop will get great performance out of this laptop as well. Posted below are the stats on the GFX card. TU and repped for a great deal.

Read the reviews on Newegg about this laptop and you may not be all that impressed. It's just a small handful but I'd be a little leery.

I did and the reviews are not valid. One is from a person who never even received it yet. Another guy griping cause he cant put windows 7 on it, and the only one who has any real issue, no matter how weird, is getting electrocuted? So overall I would not be worried about the reviews. The guy who never got it yet, is griping cause the GFX card is not a class 2, or class 1 card, that could have been easily found out by doing a Google search.

Overall for almost every average and daily user this laptop would be great for and then some. Even some light to medium gaming, specially if the games are made for AMD architecture.

I did say "a little leery" as I know there can be some real idiots writing those reviews. But those customer experiences that are valid gives the impression that it "could" happen to me. In these cases, I usually just wait to see if there are more positive reviews along the way.

Does this laptop have an extra slot for an extra ssd? Or would you have to remove the old hdd?

slee75 02-12-2013 02:54 PM

Thanks for passing that along. I was thinking about buying the S-Series but the large mousepad was a major turn off. If you can disable accidental touchpad usage on the E-Series, I'm sure the same will apply to the S-Series.

sumo28 02-12-2013 03:17 PM

i have one sitting next to me. ordered 1 for my g/f when it dropped from $650 to $640. now another $10 off is pretty good. We used the newcustomer coupon usually advertised on their homepage for another $10 off.

It's nice in that it has 1080p screen and backlit keyboard but obviously not as good of a gpu as other similarly or cheaper priced systems. also it doesn't appear any thinner or lighter or better constructed than the other comparable laptops. personally i'd go for a similarly priced lenovo, or an acer if it was much cheaper for the same performance...

NO there is no extra slot, you would have to remove the existing hard drive.

Honestly I don't even know why they didn't just stick with HD 4000 for this laptop as the performance in gaming is superior and most other applications it wins too.. =\

The only thing that the best buy notebook has in common with this one is the screen size :D . It;s an i3 compared to this i5, it's Toshiba vs Sony Vaio, No dedicated video ...

17.3" screen? Sure
Better graphics card? Sure
1080p resolution? Good luck. (The best you'll be able to find is probably 1600x900.)

I can live without 1080p . what are your recommendations. I need a new 17" that's very good for gaming for around $600. I'm mainly going to play dungeons crawlers like diablo 3 and torchlight 2 on high and watch HD movies ....so if that sorry can handle diablo3 and other games like it on High .I'm good . I got my consoles for the other types but a 17" that can play all types of games on high settings and is under $700 even without 1080p I would most definitely buy.

This? Vs Asus G73
i7-2670qm
GTX 460
8GB DDR3
750GB HDD
1080p screen 17.3"
Backlit keyboard
I've been using it for a couple of weeks no problem, borrowing from friend and he's offering me to buy it for 450. Should I buy the asus? Or spend a little more and get the sony?

Kryspie 02-12-2013 09:19 PM

weak card. even if it was a 7650M it still would have been weak for $630

Yes. More than a year ago I got a comparable machine with a 2GB 7690M for $689. At least with a 7650 you can do some light gaming. There is a huge difference between 7550 and 7650.

RussSchultz 02-13-2013 06:25 AM

Yeah, the 7550 seems to be the same performance as an HD4000. seems like a waste to even put one in a 3rd gen ivy bridge...
