Every Hitachi hard drive I've ever owned has died a premature death. Never again.

Yup, I'm actually worried that it won't fit into an average rack.

I didn't know 2 weeks ago @ Frys was black friday.... http://slickdeals.net/f/5832966-4...5-199-Frys

notebookgrail 02-12-2013 06:58 PM

It has been @ $199 at BH last month. Also Costco is selling it for $199 for a while. $209 is standard price. Not a great deal.

That's surprising. The few Hitachi's I've had have been excellent. BackBlaze (the online cloud backup service, with over 50 PETABYTES worth of drives) uses Hitachi as they have had the least failure rate on them. That's a pretty big endorsement.

yapchagi 02-12-2013 07:23 PM

It was $199 at Fry's.

Hopefully that's an indication that their quality is on the rise. Any hard drive manufacturer is going to have failures, and they seem to swing in cycles, or at least that's the perception. I just haven't had very good luck with my last few Hitachi's, and it's left a bad impression. Like any brand of hard drive, though, it's a crap shoot.

Agreed. The last drive I had go bad on me was an original 36gb WD Raptor years ago. Thankfully it had a 5 year warranty. Before that, I had a a bunch of Deatstars (60GXP and 75GXP's) go.

I just recently found out there was a class action lawsuit on those drives, $100. I'm not sure if that was $100 per drive or per user. If that would have been per drive, I would have come out with $700 as I had a bunch in a RAID 5 setup (that still ultimately failed). Damn.

never use raid to save data yada yada yada.... but if you still want to do it, use the most varied bunch you can. e.g. one hitachi, one wd, maybe close with another hitachi from a very different lot than the first, etc.

just keep the perfomance/size similar

I never said it was a backup or that I lost data, only that the array failed.

I completely disagree with using multiple manufactures and models for an array, especially if it's a mirroring array. After all, the drives are basically writing in sync with each other. Out of sync gives more opportunity for a flipped bit or other corruption. No thanks.
