American Express Blue Cash Everyday/Preferred Offers ($150/$250 signup bonus; YMMV)

I've been checking this site occasionally to see what new credit card offers show up.

https://www.creditcards.com/cardmatch

Today I received an offer for, applied, and was approved for what is the best yet (non-targeted)
Quote:

Blue Cash Everyday offer:

$150 bonus cashback with $500 spend in 3 months
15 months of 0% purchase apr, then 12.99%

This card has no annual fee and 3% cashback on groceries (first $6000 annually - meaning a maximum of $180).
I also received the following
Quote:

Blue Cash Preferred offer:

$250 bonus cashback with $1000 spend in 3 months
15 months of 0% purchase apr

This card has a $75 annual fee (probably not waived first year), and 6% cashback on groceries (first $6000 annually - meaning a maximum of $360).
You can redeem reward dollars for statement credits in increments of $25 whenever your total available reward dollar balance is $25 or more.

Worth checking if you're interested in these offers:
https://www.creditcards.com/cardmatch
DO NOT enter SSN, just name and address.

You may need to click on the offer link multiple times, I keep getting "Amex cannot find the page you're looking for" or similar messages.

If anyone isn't sure about which card better meets their spending habits, here's a spreadsheet where you can plugin your annual spend for different categories and you can see which card will give you the biggest benefit (Blue Cash Everyday/Blue Cash Preferred/Costco).

Input spending in the bottom fields, you'll see the middle fields change to reflect the cash back in each category, and the yellow fields will show you your total cash back taking into account the annual fee on the Blue Cash Preferred. The logic includes 1% cash back on grocery spending over $6000.

My guess is any of the main grocery store chains, and independently owned ones qualify, e.g., Giant, Safeway, C-Town.

I'm pretty sure the phrasing is meant to exclude Walmart, Costco, Target, and similar superstores/wholesalers where people buy groceries also.

Means a Ralph's, Trader Joe's, Kroger, Safeway, etc. and not a SuperTarget, SuperWalMart, etc. Basically a store where groceries are its only business.

Exactly, you are correct. For me in the Chicagoland area, Whole Foods, Jewel, Dominick's, and Trader Joe's result in a 6% off discount whereas Meijer and SuperTarget do not.

No I believe joker21705 means that it's 6% for the first $6,000 each year. So if you spend exactly $6,000 at Whole Foods, you get back $360. Thereafter for each $100 you spend it's just $1 back.

No, this means that the first $6000 spent each year will be eligible for 6% back.
From $6000.01 on, you get 1% back per year.

can you get both offers? I got the BCE 150 already but want to get the 250. when I called they say if you already have BCE you cannot get the BCP signup bonus

brianjones 02-12-2013 03:11 PM

I see both offers as well. I just went through an Amex FR so i'm not planning to get any more cards for a while

It may be hard to find someone to answer that since these are both recent products. The application does say this, however:
Quote:

Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer Blue Cash® Card account within the last 90 days.
Implying you are eligible for the bonus if you opened the BCE more than 90 days ago. It doesn't specify that you need to close your other open card, so you should receive it if you're approved, IMO, but perhaps you should secure message AMEX before applying.

JDRN 02-12-2013 04:01 PM

Would Costco Gas count on the 3% CB? I've been using my Amex to pay at Costco gaspumps ever since I got it.

CocaColaFiend 02-12-2013 04:04 PM

Awesome! Thanks OP. Thumbs up and repped! Got approved for the 150 after 500. Looks like a great card, glad to jump back on Amex after i dropped the Gold card due to annual fee.

no, costco gas is not 3% on regular amex cards. All warehouse purchases are normal cashback rate of 1% i guess

Incorrect, the $6000 cap was instituted this year on groceries alone. You still get unlimited 3% cash back on gas and department stores. 1% on everything else. This card was better last year, but last year only had a $150 sign up bonus.

metaldood 02-12-2013 04:09 PM

What are "eligible" purchases?

doesn't say that its waived anywhere, if you apply over the phone you could probably get them to promise it though. worse case scenario you just say "i was told the fee would be waived" and they'll probably do it

Heady 02-12-2013 04:13 PM

I wanted to know if the 2% gas count on gas purchases at costco?

Yep - just be careful if you're trying to be cute and doing stuff that may get coded as cash equivalents in order to meet spend (aka funding brokerage account, bank account, etc) and get hit with fees.

Amex is generally pretty good if you SM them. But, as with past offers, you generally do not qualify for a bonus if you have a card in the same family, or have had one in the last 90 days. So groupings like charge family, zync/green/gold/plat, and biz/gold biz, and blue cash/blue cash express/blue cash preferred etc are problematic. Reps have been known to interpret the 90 day rule like you have, as in from last app, but there are plenty on FT that have been denied for same family too. This is definitely YMMV if you have another of the same credit family.

This all depends how the register is coded. It is even about which section the register is in. You just got to go in and test the various kinds with dummy purchases. At my local super walmart, self checkout no, regular checkout no, pharmacy yes, customer service desk no. Other people have reported similar situations with Target in terms of coding. I have not seen any reports about Costco ever reporting at 5-6% however.

Garzilla84 02-12-2013 05:16 PM

Do they have a member mall thing? Where you can earn additional points just by going through the website?

junkreceiver 02-12-2013 05:16 PM

We could not find a match with the credit bureau we use, based on the information you entered. This is not a reflection of your credit quality.

Entering your Social Security Number greatly increases your chances of finding a match, if you have not already done so.

No, thanks.

TheOldinOut 02-12-2013 05:17 PM

The best sign up was for the Amex Gold Rewards card a few years ago. It was $400-500 and then there was a glitch for existing cardholders where points magically appeared and we were able to get another few hundred in Amex GCs ;) Plus, Amex special offers kick butt.

You still had the BCE card in the past 90 days. I rushed to applying the Preferred card and now am reading this part. I just sent Amex an email inquiring about this...I will have to cancel this card if they say Im not eligible for the new bonus even though they approved for the new card.

I also have a Blue Cash Everyday card. My most recent Costco gas purchases were both categorized as "Transportation-Fuel," so it should count toward extra gas rewards - my local Costco uses a different MCC code for the gas pumps than the warehouse itself.

What do you mean ? You can get 3% back on grocery stores ( gift cards ) anytime, no anual fee ... can you find a beter deal then that ?
The 6000 limit is saying "after you spend $6000, you won't get 3% you get 1%, but before $6000 you get 3%"

Technically, the most restrictive interpretation of the rule is that the card has to be CLOSED for more than 90 days. Judging from some of the posts about the Plat card 75K offer a month ago, that's what some people have been getting... or not getting rather =/

That used to be the point before the cap. After expenses, you could make ~5% CB cashing out via AP or Serve buying Visa GCs. When you ran into AP or Serve caps there you could make ~4.2% CB cashing out via Bluebird buying Visa GCs.

That and don't forget that fuel points (without multipliers) at certain stores stacked too. Personally I don't buy merchant GCs because even with 6% back, usually you can find that much of a discount at PJ or CP. If you stacked fuel points you could probably see more than 6% back esp with 4X fuelpoints promos at Kroger.

broodtonight 02-12-2013 06:16 PM

it's super market not grocery right?

No it's only grocery, so only at places that sell only grocery, no Walmart, Target, etc. It only works at Safeway, QFC, etc ...

Just kidding. They have a Google pagerank of 6, I wouldn't worry about it.

Are you kidding... I just applied for the AMEX preferred card yesterday and they had normal 150 sign on bonus.. By using this link I am getting 250 sign on bonus... is there a way now I can get the 250 sign on bonus.... Should I call them and ask them for the 250 sign on bonus....

250 has annual fee of 75

MichaelIv 02-12-2013 06:28 PM

Does anyone know for the Blue Cash Everyday when do you get your reward dollars( cashback ) ? Is it after each bill statement or every 1 year after signup. Also if you have $71 in rewards dollars, can you redeem all $71 for statement credit or is it only in $25 Increments ( $50 statement credit + $21 left over )? I know that they might have changed it recently, if someone with recent knowledge could respond.

Every billing cycle.

Increments of $25.

I know it has 75$ fees. What I am saying is that I applied for the preferred card day before yesterday and got approved for it and got only 150 $ as the sign on bonus... but now this new offer is for 250 sign on bonus... Is there any way I can get them to give me the 250$ sign on...?

kkch3n 02-12-2013 06:38 PM

has anyone gotten $250 on the BCE? How long ago was that? I want to pull the trigger since it seems like $150 is the best deal for the past two years.

take a screenshot now and say you applied for this offer but you're seeing something different after you receive your card... I'm planning on doing that..

This doesn't account for the sign-up bonus since it's a one time event, and it doesn't include the cost of a Costco membership in the Costco card calculations, since a Costco membership is your choice to begin with.

Akatsushi 02-12-2013 07:03 PM

Thanks, just got approved for the $150 offer :)

DeathCab 02-12-2013 07:13 PM

Got the $250 preferred offer -- Can you downgrade from the preferred to regular within a year and not pay the annual fee?

Also, does AMEX have a limit on total amount of credit they will extend to a customer?

I have had this card for a year (preffered). I cash in every month for either $50 or 75. My mom also has the card and she holds her cash as a christmas savings. We are a family of three that coupons. Last year we spent $5000 at "grocery stores". The amount was only that high because I also buy gas cards at the grocery store (grocery promotion). In total I cashed out for $675 in the first year (not including the bonus I got for $150 and $75 for referring my mom). If you deduct the $75 annual fee, I still made $600 not including bonuses. This year I plan on doing better since I will max out the $6000 limit by being smarter with the gift cards. Also, websites like vitacost.com qualify for the 6%. I love the card and its my primary card because I HATE rotating categories (I have enough stuff to remember). HTH

BMFPitt 02-12-2013 07:25 PM

Supermarkets tend to have gift card sections. 6% back from Amazon and whatever else you can plan ahead on buying is very slick.

I got 250 offer on BCE 2 days back, the letter says the RSVP code will expiry by 21st March.
I am going to wait till last day before pulling the trigger. Last time with Chase freedom I pulled the trigger quickly after receiving $200 offer and later I got $300 offer on the same.

I have received 250 offer on BCE, it looks like best offer on BCE so far. Any one has received better than this?

slicklurkn 02-12-2013 07:48 PM

Signed up for BCE last month for only $100 bonus and that required a higher spending requirement :sadwalk:

would it be worth messaging or calling them or would it be a waste of time?

This average deal. In Dec of last year there was 250/1500 for Discover and the NFL 400/first purchase. If you fly there was 50k/first purchase for Southwest. No doubt there will be better deals and it depends on whether you are choosy or not. For this particular card I would not count on a better offer, but who knows?

theplayer 02-12-2013 07:52 PM

if you spend more than $2,500 on groceries, the preferred card is the way to go...not sure why everyone is going for the BCE.

Personally, I'm just in it for the statement credit/signup bonus, and it's easier for me to spend $500 than $1000.

Also, to your broader point, the grocery % back excludes Costco and Sam's, to say nothing of Target et al. It's not just $2500 on groceries, it's $2500 at grocery stores.

kowyzg0moo 02-12-2013 08:38 PM

so um, how do you know what your limit is??

Legolas1717 02-12-2013 08:38 PM

Thanks, didn't know AmEx threw no annual fee cards with a signup bonus out there! In partially so I can have an AmEx lying around indefinitely for AmEx only offers.

rr423 02-12-2013 08:42 PM

basically equals 6% off gas forever, go to the supermarket, purchase gift cards, also with gift cards you often get the cash gas price.

Just was approved, I dont see my credit limit??

Spend your $500 to get your $150 bonus, and then if you make one charge every (6) months from then on they'll most likely keep your account active.

Use the reference number included in your confirmation e-mail to register your card for online access, then you should be able to see the details.

Mintoo 02-12-2013 09:24 PM

Just talked to customer care and they confirmed that I can apply for both cards but I won't receive sign up bonus. If I apply after 90 days then I am eligible for sign up bonus and can keep both cards.

What if I apply both cards online right now and see that if I get signup bonus or not?

Any opinion?

Link in the email says to do it at americanexpress.com/onlineregistration [americanexpress.com] - this won't work if you're already a cardmember (it will tell you no other applications are associated with your login) so you'll have to wait for the real card number if that's the case.

That number is amex new account # -can google or check americanexpress.com/applicationstatus (enter social+zip, # is on 2nd page) to confirm its legit.

Great. Get another card for the Shop Small Business credit and Facebook offers this year.

agaurav 02-13-2013 06:16 AM

I signed up for a Preferred card in Oct 2012 online and was told that I was approved and will get $150 as reward dollars after spending $1500 in first three months. I paid $75 fee in the first statement and spent more than $1500 in the first month itself.

It has been more than 3 months now and I haven't yet received the reward dollars. I have called them 5+ times and the story every time is that I already had the free cash card (from the last 10+ years) so I not eligible for the $150 promotion. My issue is that they knew I had their card when I gave them my SSN and Date of Birth/Name. Yet their page said that I was approved and that I will receive the money. Does anyone know for a fact that there is fine print that if one has the free cash card then no signup bonus for preferred card?

I now plan to cancel my card and perhaps signup after 2-3 months. Any idea if that would work? I want to cancel just to show my dissatisfaction but would like to get the card to get the 6% on groceries and 3% on gas.

The terms on the sign up page state if you've held the card in the last year you're not eligible for the bonus money.

Per terms in bold on side of sign up page:
Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer Blue Cash® Card account within the last 90 days.

What is the APR on this card? 12.99% sounds too good to be true

Anyone else having problems once directed to Amex? I keep getting "Our systems are not responding"

Yeah, I'm seeing the same thing. In Chrome, I immediately get that when I click through to Amex. In IE, I can get to the Amex application and can go all the way through it, and then when I submit it I get the "not responding" error. I've been trying for the past 1.5 hours or so.

Hi-- Dont worry, I feel if it says pre-approved in list then i guess this show go smoothly..

For my wife this card did not pop up in pre-approved list itself...and just fyi-my credit score is in good category (check in Credit karma) as of now..May decrease a bit after this hard credit inquiry.

I was still getting the same error, so I tried clearing browsing history (including cookies) in Chrome. Then I started over, and it went through. Approved. Thanks OP -- great intro bonus on a great card.

AMex has different (or the same) offers on Twitter, FB, xbox, and their own website from time to time. You need to add the offer to your linked card number. Last year they have $20 credit on $200 BB purchase, $20 credit on $100 Costco.com purchase (including GC), $10 credit on $10 HSN purchase, etc.

hanabie 02-13-2013 09:09 AM

Glad I signed mine up. $250 after $1000 in 3 months. No annual fee. I got it long before this thread.

Anyway, my activation was a pain. I had to go to bank to get signature guarantee to prove that I was the card owner.

blahbooboo2 02-13-2013 09:30 AM

Is this deal dead? I don't get any Amex card offer at https://www.creditcards.com/cardmatch, just a bunch of capitalone cards

pacp_ec 02-13-2013 09:32 AM

Are you sure it was no annual fee? How did you search or got this offer?. The one offer we see now with this creditmatch website, is $250 bonus with an annual fee of $75

argothiusz 02-13-2013 09:47 AM

Quick question - I know we can buy giftcard at groceries stores to utilize the 6% cashback for other non-groceries purchases. However, those gift card cost like $3/each; is it still worth it? If you buy a $100 gc then you already lost 3%. Can you reload your gift card and still get the 6%? Thanks!

wastedige 02-13-2013 09:55 AM

I think it's gone. Once I click on AmEx card it says the deal is no longer available.

bon4liu 02-13-2013 10:02 AM

was able to go through with IE

I was able to go all the way through with IE. Took a couple of tries. Wasn't able to with Chrome though.

Anyone has the phone number for reconsideration? I recently applied a lot of credit cards for various signup bonus and have quite some hard inquiries. AMEX declined my application because of that.

But i want the BCP as well... will i be eligible for the bonus?

D3willchild 02-13-2013 10:46 AM

Got approved instantly on IE for the BCP. Thanks OP!

MadRhetoric 02-13-2013 10:50 AM

Even if I don't end up getting one, thanks for posting this OP. I've been checking creditcards.com regularly for a good deal and this is perfect since I wanted an AMEX too. Repped and TU!

DogAndPony 02-13-2013 10:59 AM

Got in on it just to have one more AMEX for smal business Saturday

MadRhetoric 02-13-2013 11:04 AM

I tried to apply and got this message: "Currently, our systems are not responding. Please try again later or call/contact us as follows: To apply by phone or for product information -- 1-800-223-2670. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to serving you."

EDIT: This was for BCE.

I also saw the offer. For sure it was no annual fee (Blue Cash Everyday). It was targeted using direct snail mail around Nov 2012. We tried to duplicate the deal by calling the same listed toll free number, but the csr said that the $250 is targeted only.

Maybe they do a soft pull of your credit score before listing the offers.

Success with Firefox! And my application was approved :)

Based on my experience and what I'm reading from others, it seems like this isn't really browser-specific. Something seems to get messed up w.r.t. cookies. Switching browsers may help because cookies are browser-specific. But you can also just clear cookies and try again in the same browser.

I must have tried a half dozen times in Chrome and IE both, and failed in both. Maybe I was just unlucky. But as soon as I cleared cookies in Chrome, it went through.

Psyman42 02-13-2013 01:30 PM

I would assume it has something to do with your credit. Even without a SSN, it's doing a soft credit pull. Amex requires excellent credit I believe.

just $50 more and this is hot deal?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but which card is better? I'd assume the $75 fee is the only real deal breaker as I qualified for both BCP and BCE.

Costco gas does NOT qualify for the 2% gas cash back

Costco gas does NOT qualify for the 2% gas cash back. Even though the charge shows up on the bill as "Costco GAS" it still does not qualify. I called customer service after noticing this and they tried to blame it on Costco. They advised Costco has not "registered" their gas stations as a gas station. Nevertheless you still get 1% cash back since you get 1% back on ANY purchase.

Thanks!
