Not to go off topic, but...

Does it make sense to purchase a ST warranty on a refurbished camera lens? The lens is the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR II. It comes with a 90 day warranty.

I'm new to the DSLR world and not sure about what issues may arise with lenses.

TIA

There is virtually no reason to purchase ANY squaretrade warranty. The odds are against you coming out ahead. As a rule, you should not buy a warranty or insurance coverage unless you are buying something that you NEED to have and you will not have the money to replace it if something should happen to it. Do you need to have this lens as a part of your job or some other reason? Could you replace it with your own money if you had to? If you answered no to the first question and/ or yes to the second, there is no reason to purchase the coverage.

I am generally in agreement with you on extended warranties that involve repairing vs replacement. In my case though, I think purchasing one for a 60" LCD TV, which reliability on these things can be sketchy, is worth the $150 for what will still be a nice tv in 4 years.

If it is something I cam comfortable taking apart and fixing myself, it is a no brainer, but these thin LCD tv's, I do not trust them like I trust the old tube monsters....

There is no "need" involved. the lens is purely a luxury item. But it's a $600+ luxury item... That's a lot of money if the lens crashes at day #91 (when the warranty expires).

What I would like to know is the chance of something going wrong with the lens since I'm new in the DSLR field.

If something happens to the lens out of warranty I would not spend the money to buy another one.

I'm with you on this one. I typically snap no when asked about product protection at checkout, but having just had an issue with a Samsung LCD at 2.4 years of ownership (just out of Samsung + Discover warranty period), I am increasingly leaning towards purchasing a SqT warranty for its replacement.

The Samsung was one of the models covered by the class action, so I took all the steps allowed under that to try and get my TV fixed. Alas, to no avail. Every other option was out of pocket, and $300 later, it still wasn't working. Anyone want parts for a LN46A540? :P

I know I'm not the only one that expects a $1200 (back then) TV to work for more than 2.5 years. And having to replace the new one between that 2 year and 4 year period would cost me a heck of a lot more than $97.50. $100 for piece of mind and keeping the wife off my back if it does break down? Sold.

I'll chime in and say that I've purchased and made use of ST warranties on three of our four laptops. After having to replace a ~$250 motherboard on a non-ST one that had just gone out of factory warranty, I decided to take advantage of coupons like these, and I'm glad I have had coverage.

There are unique heat- and movement-related variables that keep me buying these for certain items. Not to mention spills and drop coverage if you have young children. They will pick your devices up, and they will drop or throw them depending on age and temperament.

It should be noted that (last I read) the terms state that each repair will count towards the replacement price of your product. If you have a $600 laptop and it needs a $200 screen, you'll have $400 of coverage left.

YMMV, but they didn't even bother repairing a ~400 laptop a few years ago. ST just sent a check for the purchase price and we sent the device in with the box they provided. We were out the cost of the warranty (~$30?), but that was it. That's what made me a repeat customer.

If you change your mind after you buy they'll refund a prorated amount, and I think they'll refund the full amount within the first 30 or 90 days.

Last thing- This coupon says no ebay items, but it let me use it for coverage of the ebay/Adorama Asus Vivobook that was a slickdeal a couple of weeks ago.

If something happens to the lens out of warranty I would not spend the money to buy another one.

That is a lot of money to have spent on something if it breaks after 90 days. However, odds are that it will not break (far less than 50%), otherwise Squaretrade could not afford to offer extended warranties. If you create a habit of purchasing extended warranty coverage on items in this price range, you will find through the law of large numbers that after 10 years of doing so you will have spent far more in warranties for various purchases than you have received back in claim money. That doesn't even mention the fact that anything that did break may have been repairable for a reasonable cost and the time value of the money you paid up-front for the coverage.

davdams45 02-13-2013 10:46 AM

I don't discount your gut reaction at all. Perhaps you can take advantage of a Squaretrade pricing anomaly that hinges on most people forgetting about their coverage or being too lazy to make a claim on it (like rebates). And for us Americans these days, a television is more of a need in many households than a want (I am willing to defend that statement with avid tv-watching spouse and kids who would kill me if we didn't have one). However, 60 inches worth of LED may not be a need. What if you had to go out and get a 36 inch 720p LCD model to "make do"? (can't believe I just said that as others die of starvation and lack of health care) It likely would not cost you much more than the $150 you paid for the warranty coverage by the time the TV breaks with the ever-falling price of electronics. Itrain's Samsung certainly won't cost $1,200 to replace with a similar model. In effect, he hasn't lost $1,200. He has lost maybe the $425 the TV is worth at fair market value at it's current age. And even if Itrain had won the battle by purchasing a warranty on the Samsung, he would have lost the war unless the desktop computer, refrigerator, blu-ray player, home theater system, washer and dryer, etc. that he also purchased warranties on decided to fail as well (statistically improbable). And yes, those items are probably less likely to fail, but their warranties cost enticingly less than the TV warranty and the products fall in value less rapidly than a TV. If you resist the urge to purchase extended warranties, you will end up ahead over the long run, unless you have a trained nose to pick up on some pricing anomaly that makes you an "adverse selection" for squaretrade.

This is why your argument is a failure. By the very nature of making this post on Slickdeals, you are failing to understand that the vast majority of people here are the "adverse selection" or the "unwanted customers" by these types of companies.

People here in most cases are not blindly throwing money at warranties or anything else without a reasonable expectation of a payoff.

The TV I purchased from sears was originally $3100, slickdeal posted for $999. In 4 years a mid grade 60" LCD will still be $1000. It might be a 4k resolution no glasses 3d model, but it will still be a grand at least.

The end point is, as you say, these are not "needs", so if you can afford a $1000 tv, then spending another $150 on warranty which might seem unnecessary is something else you can afford as well. Maybe 3 years down the road I am broke and sitting at home collecting an Obamacheck and my tv breaks... Then what? Unless they have new government run tv repair facilities, I might not have even that $150 for a repair. At least with my warranty I can use my Obamaphone to call Squaretrade.

rking0122 02-13-2013 11:49 AM

I bought a ST warranty on a new Apple Macbook Pro. I got the warranty when they were offering 30% off with no cap. So instead of $299, I paid $209.

Do any of you have any real world experience with Apple that can comment on whether I need this? This is my first Apple notebook.

The drawback to Applecare for the Macbook is I paid significantly under retail because it was an open-box. ST will limit me to the price paid if I have a claim. The drawback to Applecare is they don't cover accidents. The drawback to both is I'm either out $209 or $244 for something I may not need.

Also, first one to PM me can have my code! (NOW CLAIMED)

My argument made an exception for adverse selection, therefore it is not a failure :)
In 4 years, you will still be able to purchase a basic non-4K model, even a used one on eBay or CL that matches the value of your failed unit in its pre-failure state. And it certainly won't cost $1,000.

Also, you are hilarious and I commend that. And if you are broke on Obamalife 2.0 in 3 years, you aren't going to be worrying about getting a 60" 4K LED. Instead, you will be kicking yourself in the rear repeatedly for not having saved the $150 for a warranty on your still-working TV that you are trying to sell in order to buy bread and toilet paper. You and your neighbors will then end up burning your TVs in an outdoor bonfire in order to stay warm, releasing toxic gases into the atmosphere in an unintended negative consequence of the Obamalife plan.

Don't think of it as a warranty, think of it as insurance. I'm sure I've 'wasted' thousands of dollars over the years in insurance premiums with negligible return because I rarely ever get sick or injured.

HOWEVER, without insurance, I like many of us here on slickdeals could be one horrific traffic accident away from bankruptcy.

That said, I agree that most of the things that we're insuring with SquareTrade are wants rather than needs, I doubt any of us has any interest in replacing our good at full price or waiting again for the 'awesome deal' we're hoping to insure. They may not be necessities, but that doesn't mean we're just willing to throw them away because a child forgot to put on the wrist strap while playing on the Wii.

The drawback to Applecare is they don't cover accidents. The drawback to both is I'm either out $209 or $244 for something I may not need.

Also, first one to PM me can have my code! (NOW CLAIMED)

well not really no.. you might be able to claim your $$ back on ST they say 100% refund. so maybe after a year youll say screw this i want to cancel the warranty, and they will give you your money back. Now will this work 100% of the time or will it work at all idk but you cant advertise money back guarantee on the website and not follow through.

No, you're not willing to take the low risk of having to throw them away. You would rather pay someone who, in that rare case, will throw it away for you and write you a check. It is not a smart financial decision. It is an emotional purchase made in fear.

Last thing- This coupon says no ebay items, but it let me use it for coverage of the ebay/Adorama Asus Vivobook that was a slickdeal a couple of weeks ago.
.

Sounds like ST will be making back the money they lost on your laptop quite easily. You should stop while you are (luckily) ahead.

To clarify, I'd rather feel like I threw away $150 on a warranty that I never put to use than throw away the cost of a new 60" television so I can have what I initially paid for when I bought the first 60" television if it goes out after the initial warranty.

Questions for you Square Trade Experts:

I just bought a camera at Office Max using Maxperks rewards for the entire purchase. If I buy a ST warranty and my camera breaks, will ST pay me in cash equal to the amount I paid originally even though I used Maxperks rewards and not actual cash to buy the camera?

Also, if my camera breaks, how do I know if they will offer a refund in cash or opt to repair the camera instead? Is it their choice or mine regarding refund vs repair?

Thanks in advance for the help.

They did, just last week 30% off with no max. That seems to be the only time IIRC
