These things literally last like 2 min....so frustrating.

johnnyblades 02-13-2013 01:57 PM

any thoughts on how this older model is better than the new model?

http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-m...04164.html

granted, this new model is probably more of a media streamer than a media player. Just curious if the older model does anything better than the new model with the supposedly better UI

They are routinely on ebay for $65

iamandrewz 02-13-2013 04:31 PM

Some day I'll catch one of these...

ugh.

Kurtois 02-13-2013 04:47 PM

I have the old WDTV Live Plus (Netflix version).

Is this way better? I upgraded it to WDLXTV (sp?), however, it still was klunky for average user. This has better UI, yes?

I've had the original, the wdtv live plus and this new version. The new one by far is the worst of all of them as it's thrown in a lot of junk in which I have no use for.

Biggest issue is it's network setup has some issues, if using wireless I would drop connectivity from my media server every 20-30 mins which is incredibly annoying. No issues at all with the wd tv live plus and the first gen one I never setup the wireless hack to it.

If you don't need another one I'd bypass this as an upgrade.

mikenlob 02-13-2013 05:08 PM

How do these compare to the Android sticks that I have seen around? You can get those for around 50 bucks i think.

timbertop 02-13-2013 05:14 PM

If you purchase a refurb let us know if the $15 Vudu movie credit shows up on a special offers tab on the home screen. Write down the code if it does because it may disappear after the unit does its auto-firmware upgrade.

I've watched quite a few movies on mine with no stuttering or freezing on wifi. Picture quality is excellent. 800Mhz processor is slow as you might expect for a $70 computer. Navigation between menus takes a few seconds. Set-up and log on to the router was fast and easy enough for an eight year old. PP reporting issues may have been with the old firmware.

Advantage to buying the $67 one from AMZ (FBA) is no hassle return and AMZ pays return sh.

kevhath 02-13-2013 05:15 PM

Has anyone used one of these with mlb.tv? I have the old and old+ versions which have worked great for 3 years for what they do but am intrigued by this model as it allegedly can stream from mlb.tv. I am not interested in going to the Roku or other brands at this point given the success of my three other WD's. Thoughts?

cgallagher 02-13-2013 05:28 PM

FYI there's a new WD TV Play just announced. Newer GUI, similar features based on the first couple previews that have trickled out. It doesn't do MPEG2 and DTS though.

I have the Live plus and this one. The new one is a little less responsive in the menus, but does look much better, and is more customizable. The wireless streaming is far more capable in the new one than the old one with a wireless N usb stick.

I was able to play a 16gb 1080p mkv from a blu ray with no drops or stutters at all. Quite impressive, and eliminated my need to think about running ethernet. I had all sorts of skips and stutters with the old box even with 720p content.

The one issue I had with the new box was the initial setup with my windows Vista shares. It took me a couple hours to sort it out.

Thanks ! Repped for the info..

I actually think the new one is better then the old one in every aspect. I think it is more responsive in the menus and the boot time is so much faster.

A totally opposite view....:D

I have three of the WD TV Live Plus boxes and the biggest thing I am missing is the ability to stream Amazon Instant Video, which doesn't look like it is coming to *any* of the WD boxes. At least for me, there is no advantage at this point go with the newer WD TV Live Streaming Media Player boxes.........

Initial impressions from Desktop Review on the newly released WD TV Play. Mentioned is the fact that discussions are underway to bring Amazon Instant Video to WD TV devices. It is also suggested that the new PLAY UI will become available to the Live as a firmware upgrade. I see only one usb on the Play compared to 2 x usb on Live. Could be an issue for those wishing to use a wireless keyboard.

WD Play does not have SMB either so stick to the WD TV Live. I still have the previous version and love it, the new one runs hot unless you unplug the power cord...something about the device staying on standby or something but after I got it for my in-law is not bad either.

I got two of these a while back for about $44 apiece after a coupon.. They are pretty much new in brown box, as others have said, and work great so far..

I bought a cheapo $20 external enclosure and threw in an extra 640GB HDD I had laying around. Turned on the SMB Windows server and my laptop/desktop found it immediately (I don't really have a media server/NAS so I find that the WDTV Live being my 'media server' works best, since it uses such little power and has no need to be mobile).. it's been AWESOME not having to worry about discs for my legally owned DVDs or TV series anymore.

I used the Hulu app a bit, and it's alright.. You can't go wrong for $44 IMHO, aside from maybe getting a Wifi compatible Bluray player with Amazon/Netflix/Hulu/others built in. I have no Blurays though, and I loathe optical media in general, so would much rather stream/store stuff on a local disk.

The menus are a bit sluggish, though I have a feeling they would be slightly faster on ethernet/wired. I've only used 802.11n so far, and I've only streamed/copied DVD and/or 720p encoded rips so far, but they've all worked great over Wifi, even in our extremely congested area (tons of APs here). They also fix bugs and update the firmware pretty regularly (already got one update in the last month or so), so support for it seems pretty good still.

Only downside is I kinda wish that they were WDLXTV (sp?) compatible, since I am a tinkerer at heart and would love to flash an aftermarket ROM to it to garner more functionality out of it. If you are looking for something specific that the stock firmware doesn't provide, stick with a WDTV Live Plus or Live with WDLXTV compatibility..

I agree that they go out of stock too fast.. WD should just stock up on them for months and months, then have a bigger sale..

nguyenvanhiep 02-13-2013 10:03 PM

I got 2 last time. I dont understand why roku would be more popular than this one. It can play mkv files from window shared folders, and works with usb keyboards, even wireless keyboard!

Mine arrived Monday, but UPS guy just left it on the porch and didn't ring the bell, so I didn't discover it until I went out to warm up the car Tuesday morning. I played with it last night and was surprised at how much it does. Almost seems a shame that all I was going to use it for is to put in my wife's car so she can watch x.264 and mkv videos on her lunch break.

I let it auto update to the newest firmware and it does seem to handle every video file I've thrown at it. It takes awhile to load up the list of videos on my flash drive, but maybe that's because I have it formatted NTFS. No big deal there. I did find it odd that when I hooked it up to my PC monitor via HDMI, it defaults to 720p anytime power is cut. I always have to re-select 1080p. Is that normal? Also, in 1080p, on my monitor it seems to underscale. There is a black border, even with the scaling set to max of 100%.
