PogoPlug Mobile - POGO-V4-A1-01 - $18 from Rakuten.com (formerly Buy.com) + FS

2 Attachment(s)
Rakuten.com (formerly buy.com) has the PogoPlug Mobile device (POGO V4-A1-01) on sale for $18 + FS

http://www.rakuten.com/prod/pogop...35914.html

The older models have been on sale from Adorama for $15 this week, so this looks like a pretty good deal for those looking for a newer model for a few dollars more.

This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

This is the Mobile model not the V4 so it only has 1 X USB 2.0 port and no SATA.

Also NO ArchLinux support on this model.

This is a great deal for $18. Got 1.

Conflicting info here - looks like this unit doesn't have USB 3.0 ports ... Google the model # and you'll see what I mean. :\

Tech specs only list a 2.0 port on the website. Don't see where you got 3.0 from.

Product images in the OP show USB 3.0. :\

What are the advantages of this model vs the older model? Any disadvantages for this model?

Slower CPU I believe.
Got one to play with.
For $18, not a big deal.

Hmm, in that case may be better to go with older model. Also read a review (with 3 comments) all reported that they lost data from the HDD they connected to this device.

EDIT: did you mean the older model has the slower CPU?

vdotnet 02-14-2013 06:52 AM

Got 1 too. Thanks.

I had the pink one for 1+ yrs and its power connector is loosening. This is lower on RAM as compared to pink, but makes up for it in SATA port as I always wanted to directly connect SATA 2.5 HDD without any external docs. Will be putting ArchLinuxARM and using for samba, transmission and more...

No, I mean this model has a slower CPU.

Don't think data loss has anything to do with the device, if it is running ArchLinux.

He meant that you have to use the usb2 port to boot your arch OS from... the other USB 3.0 ports can be used for external drives.

Removed the pics of that. Sorry - just used what was directed towards me to include when I made the thread while half awake this morning.

wilflare 02-14-2013 07:14 AM

how does this compare to the pink/black model?

Thanks for the info. It seems the only advantage of this model is the eSATA. Also it looks like this model only has one USB port. The older model seems to be the better option unless you need eSATA.

Where do you see FS? I see free store pickup, but shipping is coming out to over $6.

USB 2 port is under removable cover. The two you see are USB 3 ports. ArchLinux can only be installed and run from USB 2 port.

doufu 02-14-2013 07:49 AM

So this one is actually not better than the older one other than the SD slot?

The video on Rakuten website only shows one.

I see. So you have to drill a hole into the casing or remove the casing and leave it off to access the USB 2.0? or is the expectation to use one of those ultra mini USB flash drives that stays in the casing?

Also, I thought that ArchLinux was installed internally or is that only on the older model?

Thanks for the info.

I only seeing one, unless this is a newer model:confused:

cowguy 02-14-2013 08:15 AM

This version does not have have esata or usb3 [pogoplug.com]. The ones with the purple logo have those. The other E02 model is better supported by the hacker community.

donholio 02-14-2013 08:22 AM

There is a lot of confusion here. This model is the Pogoplug Mobile (http://www.amazon.com/PogoPlug-PO...B007WM70N4). It only has a single USB 2.0 connection on the back.

There is also a Pogoplug Series 4 (http://www.amazon.com/Pogoplug-Se...d_sbs_op_1) that has 2 USB 3.0 ports on the back, a USB 2.0 port and a SATA connection under the top cover.

The Series 4 has a pink logo on the front, the mobile has a blue logo on the front.

Hope this helps.

Kaede 02-14-2013 08:24 AM

There is only 1 USB 2 port and I don't think the cover is "removable" (unless you use a screwdriver). Review here [smallnetbuilder.com].

LiquidRetro 02-14-2013 08:28 AM

What is everyone using these for? And by that I mean besides what they were intended to do.

vdotnet 02-14-2013 08:36 AM

Guess I will cancel my order as this does seem to have only 1 usb and no SATA. Also, no ArchLinux for this model.

cowguy 02-14-2013 08:40 AM

[QUOTE=LiquidRetro;57574932]What is everyone using these for? And by that I mean besides what they were intended to

NAS (smb, apple shares), music server ( Dlna, squeezebox etc) , downloader (torrent, sabnzbd)

Or as a client to play net radio ( with a USB sound card)

This version is a lot better and cheaper

slickdicker 02-14-2013 09:19 AM

$19.99 at Amazon [amazon.com]if prime shipping is important to you.

if that's the case, it is not worth $0.02. Only $0.01.

Basically these are only good if you run them on Archlinux and do not use the proprietary Pogo software. Pogo gives you a decent little device (well the older model with the 1.2ghz cpu) but holds you hostage with their software (like almost all companies nowadays).

So, people use alternate means and make this a good device, from the POS that it is with the pogo software. =)
