can someone chime in a little on this? Thinking of purchasing it for home use. No gaming at all. Missed out on that staples Lenovo deal, is this one better?

If you are talking about this one:
http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/8...-windows-8

The deal in this current thread is, of course, $100 more. The processor is the next newer generation, though, should be slightly better in a "more efficent" sort of way. (Not noticeable for light non-gaming use.) This deal in this current thread has 2GB more RAM, which is always nice. Otherwise they are very similar. As for Lenovo vs Dell, that's up to the fan boyz, but you'll find folks on both sides of the aisle.

The are both good deals. The $270 deal was probably slightly better just becuase it was $270, but it is dead now... so you can't get it anyway. That's my quick thoughts.

dondeal80 02-15-2013 08:24 AM

The previous (same deal ) slickdeal mentioned the discount code and little else. At least this is more informative. The price starts out as $579 and then two (different expiration date codes) one for $80 & one for $120 kick-in. A reliable machine, the only major concern being the video card which (from my understanding) is not a gaming card. If you are doing any major gaming then the card is below expectations - (went on google to review it). If you are not, then the deal is fine. Someone Correct me, but this machine was selling for about $385, in Dell outlet; but, with coupon and was down to about $300..

As I stated, simply stating a desktop Dell 660 and giving a coupon code and saying $200 off, is in my opinion is not a posting - yours was a little more informative.

Since it is a desktop, a simple video card swap should suffice, correct?

Well, two things on this:
1) often times machines from the major brands have a power supply that is just enough for what they stick in. Adding a better graphics card means more power, which sometimes the power supply can't handle. It can be hard to mod a Dell/Lenovo/HP/whatever because of this.
2) This machine is in a smaller case, which means you would LIKELY (im not sure) need a "low profile" card to fit in it. That means your selection is limited for upgrading.

Hope that helps!

jbizall 02-15-2013 09:00 AM

Thank you for your post. I would be all over this if it wasn't for that pesky Windows 8! Grrrrr

colinhjx 02-15-2013 09:15 AM

Apparently, this deal is much better than staples. It provides keyboard, mouse, 802.11n wireless, larger memory and better CPU for just $100.

dondeal80 02-15-2013 09:21 AM

Just to add to your confusion. This morning's Fry's ad (B&M, online?) offers the Dell 660, with the Dell monitor (24-2440L-avail/Dell for $199) with a slightly better card, slightly better setup for $799 package deal.
Meaning, in their deal you are paying about $200 more for the slightly better setup - Just to get an
idea you may want to review the Frys, deal spec (but I would not buy it).

If you want to find a deal, (my own game) wait for the next Dell outlet - 20% off - xps 8500 - and find
an i3,i5 deal with a decent video card (at least one step up). There are a couple of those in the $600 price range and may even be in the $500 price range. Dell has been selling a lot of discounted 8500's, in the $700 price range and return's are starting to show up in the inventory. You will have to be fast though and be lucky and it will be a more expensive deal then this $379.

Thanks, repped.

It has been a while since I owned a desktop (2002). It has been all laptops since then, but I am thinking of changing back.

dong 02-15-2013 09:52 AM

So to make this a decent gaming rig, all you would have to upgrade is the video card and power supply?

jshackles 02-15-2013 10:07 AM

I bought 12 of these for a work project last month, here are my thoughts on the 660s:

1) I thought it would be smaller. All of the pictures referenced the 10 inch form factor. It's actually about 10 inches tall x 5 inches wide x 25(!) inches deep.

2) For non-gaming use, they're pretty sweet little machines. Because of the size, you would need a low profile PCI-e card to upgrade the graphics capabilities.

3) If you're planning on upgrading the video card, you would almost certainly need a non-separately-powered card. I would also recommend a card without a fan, as there is nowhere in the case for the fan to blow air.

4) The power supply is proprietary, and cannot be replaced with a higher wattage supply.

5) It was a little tricky to upgrade the system memory myself, but not impossible.

Great machine for the price, but a gaming machine it is not.

Whoa, are you sure? The Dell product page says it's about 15 inches deep:

Yeah, it would have to be some big-ass Extended-ATX case with that kind of dimensions. Still, the PC is noticeably deeper than its height and width would suggest.

While not crazy hot, this is really a good price on this particular PC model. You can find refurbished ones on the Outlet for less (especially when there is a coupon), but they usually come with a Pentium processor and smaller hard drives. So, if you are in the market for a basic PC and you actually need the small form factor, I would jump on it.

Better graphics, lower power consumption in the 3220. Faster, but likely unnoticeably so in basic real-world tasks. Here is a comparison between the i3-2100 and the i3-3220:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Pr...289?vs=677

Because i3-2100 is slightly slower than i3-2120, cut the difference in half to get a good idea of i3-2120 vs. i3-3220 performance.

Yes. It would be great. Depending on your tastes/needs, you may want to upgrade to a discrete graphics card down the line. It will have to be a low-profile lower-end card, but it is not a necessety in any way.

This one has USB 3.0 ports (2), the Lenovo had none.

Dell quotes this one as 220W power supply. Seems very anemic. I don't know what the Lenovo was, though.

Lots of people's workplaces seem to have free/cheap software available through IT these days. I know I can get Windows 7 for $10 from mine. My girlfriend found out yesterday she can get Windows 7 for free from hers. *shrug* Limitations are usually that you have to do some "work" on it (checking your work email once a month counts), and that you have to uninstall the software if you leave that job (which I'm sure somebody actually goes around and checks on).

Have you checked yours (if you work someplace with an IT department)?

TheBlueGoose 02-16-2013 08:48 AM

Anyone know if this rig has space to add a SSD? I can't seem to find much info about that. Being that there doesn't seem to be much extra space, I doubt this is a possibility. Thanks.

honestly even if there wasnt space, you could literally use double sided sticky tape and mount it anywhere the cables reach. ssd dont have moving parts so no vibration issues

blueribb 02-16-2013 09:26 AM

Slim form factor limitations

Price is decent but I would much rather have a desktop that wasn't slim or small form factor. This limits video and power supply upgrades. Try finding a slim power supply with higher wattage at a good price.

Good point, but this would be going in the living room, so I'm trying to keep it looking compact/minimalist. If a SSD would fit in the case, I might pull the trigger.

kmcherry 02-16-2013 09:56 AM

Do you want to add an SSD or replace the hard drive? The best usage of SSD is as the drive for the OS, so you'd probably want to replace it. You'd need an adapter, I suspect, but it will fit in.

There is not another hard drive bay from what I can tell from different reviews. You could always replace the optical drive with another hard drive. You could also use an external (3.0 USB) drive.

EDIT:

really? but you can't go through any rebates site if they're putting in the order for you I believe.

still on the fence with this deal. I haven't used a desktop in YEARS, i'm running on my Asus i3 laptop.

With tax this might hit close to $400? Is there any way to put this cheaper.

loxpp 02-17-2013 03:01 AM

replacing the dell PSU with generic Psu is easy. and even the dell 305w psu i had before could handle ~400w without problem... that's why i like dell. i used that setup for 2.5 years.

Assuming you just want it to have two monitor functionality and not for playing games or anything, something like this would do.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6814131338

For the second monitor on that you'd have to use the HDMI or PC ports.

The key is to get low profile, which basically means "doesn't take up a lot of room". You also want to get something that is low power since the PSU in that Dell probably isn't up to handling too many extra components.

Keep in mind I didn't take long looking for that... with a more thorough search of multiple websites you'll likely find a much much better deal. I only linked that to give you an example of what to look for... low profile, low power, multiple connections on back.

XFX One ON-XFX1-STD2 Radeon HD 5450 512MB DDR3 PCI Express Low Profile Video Card [newegg.com]
Live at 1pm Pacific, $9.99 after a $15 MIR, with free shipping. Unless you need something with more power, this will handle dual monitors just fine. They don't get any cheaper than that.

Keep in mind that you will have no way to mount the VGA port and that the card's heatsink extends a tad wider than the single slot.

A lot of the discount coupons (including outlet) were pulled yesterday - way before the expiration dates.
Believe that they got aggressive in their discounts and were overwhelmed by the orders;
note some delays in mine (8500) and others orders. Pretty sure the managers said hold and let us evaluate before going any further.

Was this configuration - sorry was $351 before tax.

One i3 left for $389 minus 20% = $311.20 before tax.
