Too bad the resolution blows chunks.
|
Everyone complaining about the resolution... what gives? If you want to sit down for some hard core gaming, couldn't you connect to a high res monitor to get your nice resolution?
It would be the same as complaining about the "small" screen. "Man, I can't game on on a 14" screen!!" |
that resolution on a 14" isn't horrible, but the issue isn't about games. It's about browser and document real-estate. 1366x768 is just meh for any kind of browser work.
Also, I have no idea why they'd put a 610m on a device with a HD 4000, since they're just about equivalent performance. |

Graphics GPU/VPU NVIDIA GeForce GT 610M Video Memory Dedicated 1GB Graphic Type Dedicated Card It is because of the dedicated memory instead of using the HD4000 on the CPU and sharing the RAM from the rest of the computer. It is nice to have 8 or 16GB of RAM and another 1GB of dedicated video memory instead of slowing down other processes or operations. Also, just a heads up. "Communications - LAN 10/100Mbps" (No Gigabit LAN) Wish it had 10/100/1000Mbps... |

I am in the market for a decently priced laptop, but all these laptops are showing up with this crappy 1366x768 resolution. My current i5 L410 Thinkpad has the same screen resolution and its not adequate for productivity, in particular if you happen to be a programmer/developer!
|
would this be good for a resell if you sell the laptop and the free harddrive ?

If you don't care for the NAS (which looks pretty lousy), Amazon is selling a newer model for $550.
http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-U410...009AEPVFG/ Difference is the Amazon model has a bigger HDD (750GB), smaller SDD (24GB) and Windows 8 instead of 7. |
want to pull the trigger but then i saw wireless connection issue....anyone have experience with this? is there a remedy for it?

Obviously when you order online you can't really tell when it was manufactured. Supposedly they'll repair the ones that have this problem. |

Cause I like being able to open a webpage and immediately see more than their damn banner. |
1366x768 is a horrible resolution. The pixels are so large you can see them all. Text is blocky. Have you tried writing code at that resolution? You can see like 10 lines of text. You can't shrink the font down to smaller size because the pixels are so big the text becomes unreadable at smaller sizes.
Someone needs to slap the PC industry upside the head and make them start providing at least 900+ lines of vertical resolution. And lets please get back to 16:10 instead of 16:9 screens. It's not like the only thing I do on a laptop is watch movies in 16:9, and if I do I don't mind some black bars at the top and bottom. I still use an old Dell D830 laptop (Core2Duo 1.8ghz) because it has a 1928x1200 resolution screen, which I can't find anywhere for under $1k. |
14" screens a lot smaller than 14" screens back then. They are wider and squat. I also lament the laptop industry move in this direction, but.. This resolution suits the size just fine for out and about. It goes as small as my eyes can comfortably read. At home, you should be on external mouse/keyboard/monitor anyway.
http://i.imgur.com/DSuKVDK.jpg taken from 14" e430 with same resolution. this seems like a pretty good build for an ultrabook. You take the performance hit with the cpu downclocked to 1.7ghz tho. |
lenova's Ultrabook isn't exactly "Ultra".

Its red, and its a refurb (still get a 1-year warranty though)...and it says it has HD3000 (which I question since its Ivy Bridge)...but its only $462. |

This computer is a NIGHTMARE. Honestly. I am returning it. Wireless is awful - even after the claimed fix. So, so slow! And customer service was hilariously bad. NO ONE could understand me and I got the run around for hours and hours trying to get this stuff figured out.
SSD doesn't seem to speed anything up. The only good thing is the form factor. Oh - but I didn't mind the resolution myself. And when I upgraded to Windows 8 - I had a TON of driver problems that I couldn't seem to get fixed. All that being said, my brother has a U310 and loves it. One of the reasons I got the U410. My personal experience with this machine and Lenovo was just awful. |

Just by looking at these two laptops. I don't know why anyone wouldn't get the Amazon one over the Newegg one. Why was this not posted? lol |

The difference is not as bad when you are right next to the router, but still there is a difference. He said he hasn't noticed it being super slow, but he only has the U310 (so nothing to compare) and lives in a studio apartment. I noticed this issue the first night I had the computer. Windows updates and what not were noticeably, excruciatingly slow to download. And I saw 9 hours for battery life on the Amazon deal...wow - that is wayyyyy off. From a full charge and using intermittently at work on the most battery saving settings, I got about 5 hours. |

Based on my research, and I have done quite a bit because I tried to convince myself to keep this laptop, it seems like there is a design flaw with the placement of the wifi card. Even after the units were repaired and the MAJOR wifi issue was fixed (signal dropping, only able to use internet within 10 feet or a router, < 1 mg dl speeds) their "fix" just makes it slightly better. I am pretty sure that my unit IS "fixed," as the internet is certainly usable and signal doesn't drop, but the speeds are inexplicably much, much slower, even when the wifi connection is showing full strength. So weird. Amazon wouldn't be a bad idea since their return policy is so good...but for me, this laptop has been nothing but a headache. Was looking at the Amazon reviews and saw this from a really long, positive review "But since the computer boots in about twelve seconds and is pretty fast in all respects, I don't see why you'd bother." No clue what this dude is talking about. My Lenovo takes ~2 minutes to boot. When I had Windows 8 installed it took ~3. It was another reason I am returning. I figured the SSD would help to speed things up but time to boot is ridiculous. Downloaded Soluto to see what was up and nothing really came of that. And that same reviewer says it is capable of playing some high end games...again...this is verrrrrry far from a gaming laptop. The 610M is a pretty weak card. It is a bit better than the integrated, but not by much. |
And FYI - I am using the U410 right now (my Dell comes Tuesday) and my wireless connection has dropped twice while trying to comment on this thread.
|
I think I will go with the 510 from Staples for $100 cheaper.
